...I'm not horribly concerned about game "speed" so to speak and, heck, we've barely gotten started so, no big delay with the two of you being out for a while.

I am planning on posting the rest of the "prelude" piece at some point today and would love to have a tiny post (or even PM) re: the current locations and activities of Billy and Tawny if Ayrn and Bri can manage but it's not 100% necessary... I can always extraploate. Billy's flying escort for a colonist caravan heading for one of the Saturnine moons, perhaps, and Tawny's currently a navigator aboard a UEG ship?

Topic: Straight On Til Morning Q&A
Subject: Info and such about the worlds around you

((Here we are, folks, a little info I've culled together and posted here for quick and easy reference.))

Places of Interest:

Sol – Close Solar Approach project is in progress

Mercury – Quicksilver mines have been established on the “day side” of Mercury. The UEG has set up a permanent base in the shadow of the Caloris Basin following the discovery of an underground alien complex in the basin itself. The UEG will stake a claim to the ruins and continue explorations long term. Additionally, they will conduct experiments on new DNA re-writes made easier by the helix-warping radiation of the Sun (rumors also swirl that the UEG is attempting to splice alien DNA – extracted from ancient mummies found in the ruins – to the human genome). [Gravity: Low Atmo: None]

Venus – Dante Station is built (and now operational) in low orbit around Venus. Dante Station was primarily a scientific research facility built to continue study of the planet and the ruins of the ancient alien prison (commonly known as Nieth) located there and has also served as a repair and refueling station for ships en route to mercury. Since the end of the Jovian Wars and given the increased efforts applied to the mining of Quicksilver in the years that have followed, Dante Station has continued to expand yearly and is now a major hub in the system. [Gravity: Normal Atmo: Corrosive, Thick, Toxic]

Earth – Project Aegis (the development, utilization, and marketing of Quicksilver drives) is well underway and, as the Jovian Wars slip further into history, the Frontier expands beyond Jupiter by leaps and bounds; first focusing on the Saturnine moons and then working towards Uranus and beyond. The UEG begins to seriously focus on planned missions to nearby stars outside of the Sol system. The UEG and the extraterrestrial colonies have also begun to set aside their past differences. Negotiators have begun formal talks to bring representatives of the Coalition and the Jovians into the United Earth Assembly. [Gravity: Normal Atmo: Normal]

  • Luna – Coalition scientists have begun a secret project to graft alien DNA to the human genome. Fearing that UEG scientists at Caloris Basin are conducting similar experiments, the Mueller Institute begins trials on the next stage in human evolution. [Gravity: Low Atmo: None]

Mars – Mars is officially off limits; a closed world due to rising occurrences of the Martian Plague (or “Red Death” as it is colloquially called). Only members of the scientific and military teams (commanded by Admiral Niles Antilles of the UEG) are permitted to land or lift off from the red planet. [Gravity: Normal Atmo: Thin]

Jupiter (Jove) – While the technology to skim the quicksilver “mother lode” deep within Jupiter’s violent atmosphere is decades away, a maverick scientist believes he has built a craft capable of penetrating Jove’s Eye and extracting the rich deposits of Quicksilver it contains. This scientist is currently trying to recruit pilots and scientists to help him test the craft. [Gravity: Low Atmo: Gas Giant]

  • Ganymede – Following the Jovian Wars Ganymede’s population has exploded to over 100 million. The major settlements on Ganymede are (in order of population): Gilgamesh, Isis, Memphis, and Nadaba. Numerous smaller domes are scattered around the planet usually built to house a mining camp or archaeological expedition of the moon’s extensive ruins. [Gravity: Low Atmo: Thin (but not breathable)]

  • Europa – Home of the Europans…. [Gravity:Normal Atmo: Normal]

  • Callisto – The notorious UEG/Corporate military interment/reeducation camp formerly located here has been dismantled since the end of the Jovian War but the military spaceport over Valhalla remains and Callisto has the second highest population of the Jovian moons. The biggest settlements are the domed cities built in the moon’s two enormous craters, Valhalla and Asgard. Callisto is an important ice mining and water refining center in the Jovian system. [Gravity: low Atmo: none]

  • Io – Io is the most volcanically active body in the Sol system and is a hellish, tortured world that changes from month to month, with earthquakes, volcanoes appearing virtually overnight, and lakes of molten lava bubbling up from the surface. These lakes, called “witch’s brew” by the colonists are an important and lucrative source of rare metals. Pilots flying “skimmers” are used to skim these lakes in ships designed to extract the valuable materials and eject the rest into space. Today, most of this work is done by free androids (many of whom were originally designed for these specific tasks but, after the liberation of the Jovian colonies, now enjoy lucrative pay for their work). Io has very few settlements and all of them are designed to be stripped and moved quickly as conditions on the planet change from day to day. [Gravity: Low Atmo: Toxic]

Saturn – Exploration of Saturn’s moons is tricky business because of the requests made by The Prime of Europa. Some of the moons are colonies of The Prime and the protection of Saturn’s indigenous life – the primitive Titanians - from human interference and exploitation is a key goal of the Prime.

The discovery of a secret Coalition base on Iapetus, which was studying the planet Titan with an eye toward beginning exploration of the moon, ushered The Prime into the Jovian War on the side of the rebellious colonists. Umber Grey has decided to leave Saturn alone entirely for now, although the Coalition has stated it has no plans to remove their base on Iapetus. They claim the base is “only there to study Titan, a world unlike any other in the Sol system.” [Gravity: Low Atmo: Gas Giant]

  • Titan – Subsequent to the start of the Jovian War, the Coalition was studying the planet from the moon Iapetus. These studies and the limited information that The Prime have been willing to provide have given a picture of the moon that has startled and intrigued UEG and Corporate scientists. A world where ethane has replaced water yet life somehow (by methods not completely understood by modern science) has not only developed but also thrived and reached sentience.

This world contains a single continent, Xanadu, surrounded by a massive ocean of liquid ethane. The intelligent inhabitants of Xanadu are a tribal, Stone Age culture, hunting massive beasts on a world locked in an ice age. Although The Prime monitor this world telepathically (just as they monitored the Earth) they are unwilling to share any more information and have proven willing to commit their considerable military might to Titan’s protection. It would seem, for the time being, that Titan and its mysterious life forms will remain a mystery. [Gravity: Normal Atmo: Toxic]

Uranus – Uranus has over 25 moons, all but 5 of which are much too small to make viable sites for colonization. These five moons remain largely unexplored even after the Jovian War and little is known of them. Unlike the other moons in the Sol system, the moons of Uranus are named after characters and Pope rather than characters from mythology. The five largest moons are: Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon.

Even now, Uranus remains an out of the way locale. Exploration in other solar systems, opening up by advancements in Quicksilver FTL drives, even has more allure than spending time here. However, as the population of the Sol system continues to expand, small groups who like their privacy will doubtless migrate here, seeking their own world where they can conduct their affairs without government or Corporate interference, only needing contact with the occasional supply ship. [Gravity: Low Atmo: Gas Giant]

Neptune – Neptune, despite being further out than Uranus will probably be explored more thoroughly. The occasional vortex storm, similar to Jove’s Eye reveals the existence of Quicksilver in the gas giant’s atmosphere. However there are insufficient quantities of the material to fuel a permanent reaction and these storms collapse in on themselves until sufficient material builds up in the planet’s atmosphere to spark another storm.
Neptune also draws more interest from explorers because of its one large moon, Triton. This moon, almost four times the size of Uranus’ largest moon, has a crust of about 25% ice and a thin atmosphere, making it a very good candidate for colonization. Triton is also volcanically active but the moon is so cold (as cold as Pluto) that the volcanoes actually spew frozen material leading them to be dubbed “ice volcanoes”. [Gravity: Low Atmo: Gas Giant]

  • Triton -- As interest in further exploration of the Sol system takes a backseat in UEG and Corporate resources to beginning to explore the cosmos, a small religious group travels to Triton proclaiming this world to be their order’s “promised land.” This group is an offshoot of the infamous Last Generation terrorist organization that has renounced violence in favor of an apocalyptic religion blending elements of Christianity, Islam, and the Prime Order of the Europans. The UEG does not recognize this group’s sovereignty over Triton but, since there are no immediate plans for the world, evicting them seems a waste of resources.

Pluto - Pluto is (usually) the most distant planet from Sol and by far the smallest. In fact there are seven moons in the Sol system larger than Pluto (Luna, Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, Titan and Triton). Pluto’s orbit sometimes crosses that of Neptune, meaning that the two planets trade the honor of being the most distant on occasion.

Pluto actually has an atmosphere and a companion body (named Charon). Charon is not a true moon, since the two bodies both rotate around a mutual center of gravity (as opposed to Charon orbiting Pluto). Despite its distance and extreme temperatures (the planet’s average temperature is between 38 and 63 degrees Kelvin or between 390 and 346 degrees below zero Fahrenheit) Pluto has been inhabited since late in the Age of Discovery by a small scientific team. The planet hosts the Deep Space Observatory, the most powerful and sophisticated telescope array in the human history, staffed entirely by Astronomers (a rewrite commissioned by the UEG specifically to staff the DSO).

This observatory has made many amazing discoveries about the universe. Unfortunately, many of these discoveries have been suppressed by the UEG, making scientists who wish to discuss their findings publicly subject to intimidation and worse. The most troubling rumors about what these suppressed findings might be swirl around the Galaxy M-87, which has one of the most prominent jet features ever discovered (a jet is matter ejected at speeds near the speed of light due to contact with an extremely large gravity well- in this case a black hole). It is commonly conjectured that the DSO has detected signs that this jet is used as a transport medium (much like an ancient river would be used for trade only on an interstellar scale) by an alien civilization. Some take their conjecture a step further and suggest that not only have they seen evidence the jet is used for propulsion but that they have discovered it was artificially created.

Loving the posts you have tossed up in the game thread, gang! Realizing it or not, each of you that have posted already have given me additional fodder (and perchance "side-arcs") for what I've got in store for your little group... And here I was thinking that this might be a bit tricky to manage...

The next post (and maybe the first surprise) is just around the bend.

Take care, my friend... Fair winds and following seas and all that, eh?

Not much happening yet but should be enough to get everyone started thinking, scheming, etc. I'll have another piece of the "Prelude" to put up before we start brining the players together but, as noted, feel free to post as to your characters whereabouts, etc, as you see fit.... Nothing I love more than character development, you know.

Prelude
September 10, 2388
Gilgamesh City, Ganymede, Jove’s Court

Quentin Bazran clipped purposefully along the cold, dimly lit corridor that led to his private offices. On most occasions when he strode this hallway Quentin bemoaned the gloominess of the passage. It had always seemed ridiculous to him that, on the top floors in one of the tallest buildings of Ganymede’s largest city, the lighting was woefully inadequate (especially given the fact that all of Ganymede’s inhabited cities were built of the day-side of the tidally locked moon). Today, though, given the news he had just received, the dreariness seemed appropriate.

“Is everything all right, Mr. Bazran,” queried the lovely young woman who occupied the desk in the reception area of his suite.

“No, Bambi,” Quentin murmured after a sullen moment of contemplation, “I’m afraid everything is far from all right.

I… uh…” his purposeful stride faltered and he forced himself to swallow the knot that had risen from his stomach and into his throat before he dared to meet the girls limpid, blue eyes, “I’ve just received word that Lucius Blicker has passed away.”

Bambi 592311’s eyes welled with tears even faster than she could clasp a perfectly manicured hand over her cupids-bow lips to stifle the shocked and saddened gasp that Mr. Bazran’s statement had evoked. “Oh,” she choked from behind her slender fingers as she wilted back into her seat, “Oh, Mr. Bazran, I am… so sorry... I… you must be…I…”

Lucius Blicker had been Mr. Bazran’s best friend and closest confidante for as long as she had worked at Bazran, Grey & Associates, and longer still judging from the holos and vid-frames of the pair that dotted Bazran’s office. It was said that Mr Blicker had started his career as a hauler, making the standard supply runs between Earth, Luna, and Jove’s court offset, on occasion, with circuit to the Martian or Venusian outposts. Bambi had heard the tales of those early days recounted numerous times over the years by both Mr Bazran and Lucius, himself. The tales that she (or anyone else she had ever asked about it, for that matter) had never heard, though, were those that concerned the man’s transition from a simple albeit well-known and reputable hauler into the enigmatic researcher, engineer, and philanthropist with whom the name Lucius Blicker had become associated during the Jovian War. Those stories, as far as Bambi 592311 could ever fathom, were the private domain of the conversations that Quentin and Lucius had whenever the doors to Mr Bazran’s offices were sealed shut during one of Blicker’s visits.

“…Is there anything I can do for you, sir?”

“Clear my agenda for the day, Bambi,” Bazran replied with a blink before continuing towards his office, “and send Lucius’ file to my console, please.” The lawyer cleared his throat, smoothed the lapels of his jacket, and before closing the doors behind him added; “I’ll have some transmissions for you to send in the next hour, Bambi, and, after that, you can have the rest of the day...”

((More to come, folks... Just figured I'd get this part up and give the lot of you some time to think and, if you feel like it, post as to your character's current whereabouts/situation/frame of mind/whatever...))

... I vaguely remember some ranks in Tumble for Ken that aren't showing up on this sheet, and perhaps some knowledge skills?

Did I copy the wrong sheet, I wonder?

...good catch, Ayrn.

Not sure how I missed that in reviewing the sheet, myself.

Loki - wing me with a PM or somesuch re: your additional skill allocations and I'll be sure to update Odd Ball's sheet above.

Added 3 ranks of Knowledge (Tactics) and 7 Ranks of Tumble to Odd Ball... I know Loki said Ken was fine the way he was but, hey, both of these skills may prove beneficial and you had the unused points...

*******I'm assuming she'll be bringing along her personal items - clothing, research equipment, books ect. Didn't really see anything about that kind of stuff so I just detailed the equipment she carries.

    Background
For thousands of years the Mayan civilization grew in Mesoamerica. Even as a pre-telescopic people their galactic knowledge was long unmatched. Although they were ultimately subdued by the spanish conquistadores they did remain and held onto what they could of their culture and language. It was in the Age of Discovery as the UEG sought to man the Deep Space Observatory that they took special notice of the Maya. Seeing the innate knowledge they had of the cosmos the UEG began genetic experimentation. So were the Astronomers born.

Far off on Pluto the esoteric Astronomers delve into the mysteries of the universe, and among them are the Mayans. Maru Nenna is one such Mayan Astronomer. From the beginning her life was a blend of pure science and ancient Toltec wisdom. Even in the Deep Space Observatory the Maya held onto their culture. Maru grew up as a Maya. She learned to see galactic meaning beyond what physical science saw. Her inquiries led her to develop a study of feminist Astro Metaphysics. Blending scientific learning with ancient wisdom she saw the galactic female mark.

Maru had always been able to see what others could not and seemed to know things before they happened. At times she knew the thoughts of those around her. Even so, it was not until early adulthood that Maru realized her own psychic potential. Seeing the potential to greatly further her academic knowledge in these newfound abilities she began to delve into psychic studies. It was not long after that the UEG sent a military presence to occupy the DSO. The Astronomers were told to be compliant with the military and report any and all finding before publishing them. Controversial ideas were not tolerated and many of the Astronomers were jailed, particularly the Mayan descended.

So the years passed and Maru's distaste for the UEG and the MegaCorps grew into smoldering hatred. They cared little for knowledge and truth, only the acquisition of power. Both she and her parents had been taken to the the Valhalla prison camp. However, unknown to the UEG, before her imprisonment Maru had collected all her findings on a small computer card. During her captivity she compiled her findings into an article - Rape of the Galaxy: The M-87 Phallus. The moment Maru completed the article she uploaded it onto the satellite data system. Just a few days passed and Maru found herself in a maximum security prison cell along with all the other Mayan Astronomers who had found a way to publish their findings. A death sentence would like have passed had events in the Jovian Wars not freed all in the Valhalla camp.

Free of the UEG imprisonment Maru returned to the DSO to continue her research. She published several more writings, including her most influencial - The Glactic Yoni. Maru has remained at the DSO and among the peepers and intellectuals she is known as a bit of an eccentric.

    A TRIP TO PLUTO
Joe 5664 walked through the small passage ways of the DSO. He hated coming to this place. The damn bug eyed midgets that lived here were strange to say the least. Most of the time they couldn't be bothered to look up from their work and they generally bustled around in the darkness muttering some scatter brained nonsense to themselves. Even now a few of the peepers walked by him oblivious to his presence. Joe shifted the cargo box he carried and quickened his pace. This would be the last time he came here, he'd make sure of that.

The small passageway turned a few times before Joe adjusted his night vision goggles and double checked the room number he needed to deliver the box to. A few more doors down and Joe found it; room 1313. Resting the package against his left hip Joe reached out to open the door. Just before his hand reached the door it opened revealing a small woman staring up at him.

She was a tiny little thing, at least a foot shorter than he. While most of the peepers were pallid she was dark. He'd heard of the dark skinned astronomers but never actually met one. Supposedly they were rewritten from some primitive people, but it didn't matter to him. This one was just as weird as every other bug eyed midget in this place. The diminutive woman had her hair pulled back with a few stray strands hanging out of place. A black smudge of ink stained her forehead and she spread it further across her face as she brushed a few stray hairs aside. Dark eyes stared out at him from a copper skinned face, large and almond shaped they glittered with a knowing intelligence. She was almost pretty, and might actually have been were she not so disheveled. Yet she was striking nonetheless - peepers were all striking.

The little woman's eyes lit up as if remembering something and she turned around to scurry over to a telescope. Joe watched her work for a moment. She muttered to herself as she stared through the telescope writing frenetically. He suddenly felt something akin to a flick inside his mind. Don't just stand there. Put the box on the table on the right. I'll open it later. The impish feminine voice echoed in his head and he groaned. Of all the damn peepers he had to walk in on it had to be a frickin' psychic. Joe dropped the box on the table and hurried out of the room. This was definitely his last trip out here - his last...

-PL 6 - basically a level up on cosmetic surgery. The exotic look attained from them causes people to be shifted in their disposition towards the recipient (friendly to helpful, unfriendly to hostile). As a side-effect, I've removed Cherri's chameleon racial ability, since it makes her recognizable and stand out.
    Avatar Backup
-PL 7 - I'm uncertain exactly why this is an implant, besides making it easy to carry around. Essentially, this is just a memory key that increases the memory of Cherri's avatar.

    Appearance:
Cherri is a relatively good-looking Asian woman, usually dressed in designer clothing and carrying a fashionable shoulder bag as well as a suitcase. Inside her suitcase is a very up-to-date notebook computer, upon which she does the majority of her computer work. Lately, she frequently carries an elaborate umbrella with a Chinese cherry blossom design upon it. She seldom carries other things apart from this, although she does occasionally carry a backpack instead of a briefcase, which would hold both her laptop and her LaserNet Rig. However, her most noticeable characteristic is that she has a distinctly feline appearance, with cat ears, eyes and even whiskers.

    C (Cherri's Avatar): CR 6; HD 6d8+9; hp 57; Mas 21; Init +5; Speed 40ft.; Defence 32, touch 22, flat-footed 27 (+4 class, +5 Int, +8 armour, +2 shield, +3 deflection); BAB +9; Atk +14 ranged [2d8]; FS 5 ft. by 5 ft.; Reach 5 ft.; SQ software; AL creator; SV Fort +7, Ref +8, Will +8.

    Memory Blocks Used: 15/15

    Appearance:
Cherri's avatar, named 'C' as per her pseudonym, appears as a woman on the slightly smaller side, however, she is neither thin nor fat. However, rather than float aimlessly in the cyberspace, she appears to hover, flying just above a virtual floor by means of her translucent butterfly wings. She is usually dressed in an elegant blue gown, with an open back where her wings come forth. Flowing silvery hair drapes down along her shoulders, and her healthy, tanned skin tone appears very real. Looking into her piercing golden eyes seems almost identical to looking at Cherri's own cat eyes. Her movements even appear real, with joint and muscle simulation nearly replicating that of reality, and even the motions of the impossible wings, by strong looking back muscles, seem viable, as though she really could exist in reality. She even appears to breathe and blink, all those little motions that make up what life appears to be.

C's software armour has three visual layers. The basic armour only appears if she enters combat, and takes the form of an almost archaic looking set of armour, but modernized with an exotic weave pattern of metal with a violet sheen. Visually, the armour looks strong, yet flexible and light. The second layer is her shield, which takes the visual form of a floating disc of energy, easily directed by the motion of her hand. The final layer is her deflective shield, which builds on the second layer aesthetically; when subjected to an attack, what appears to be a magic rune will pulsate at the centre of C's shield to aid in the diversion of the attack.

C's ranged weapon takes the visual effect of a slightly complicated spell. C weaves a rune in the air, before it morphs into the shape of an eye. After that happens, translucent geometric shapes of light blue and green flow up her arm, forming what appears to be a sort of cannon, which extends past the eye. An orb is then charged and shot quickly from this cannon, and upon impact it engulfs the target within it as it expands. It dissipates within a short time, however, due to variables uncontrollable by the coding, how long the orb remains, and thus how much damage it does, varies considerably.

Topic: Straight On Til Morning Q&A
Subject: Straight On Til Morning Q&A

This is the OOC and Q&A thread for “Straight on ‘til Morning…”; a Blood and Space adventure set in the Prometheus Rising campaign setting.

The year is 2388 and the end of the Jovian Wars is nearly a decade in the past. With the independence of the Jovian System the area’s population explodes even higher than it did during the rebellion. People flock to an area where they can be free of the control of governments and MegaCorps. As the Jovians ready to draft their first Articles of Confederation, the UEG and MegaCorps still maintain somewhat of a presence in the system and, on the face of things, have turned their attentions toward expanding the Frontier hand-in-hand with technological advances and fostering peaceful diplomatic relations with the newly liberated colonies. Under the surface, though, there are still resentments harbored on both sides, along with secrets and mysteries that evolved during the near century-long conflict which, some hope, may yet further the causes of their individual allegiances… or, still others believe, may render all of those individual causes obsolete and finally unite the denizens of the Sol System under a common banner.

One of those others is Lucius Blicker. A highly renowned scientist, explorer, and advocate of a truly Unified Sol. During the Jovian War, Blicker abstained from firmly aligning himself with any one faction and, throughout the course of the conflict, could almost randomly be found on either side of the ‘battle lines,’ coordinating and/or trading research, design specs, and information with scientists, technicians, and administrative personnel on various projects (though very few of them seemed to be overtly militaristic in nature). Whether Blicker’s ambiguous allegiances were due to socio-political idealism or, perhaps, driven by grander and more esoteric ideals has never been determined; he was loved and hated equally by all factions involved in the War – lauded for his genius and compassion but derided for his indistinct loyalties and labeled spy, traitor, or worse by the hardliners on either side. Both Blicker’s fame and infamy grew in the years following the War’s end but, even then, his true motivations and the enigmatic projects that resulted from them have eluded definition by even the most motivated and informed researchers, investigators, and infiltrators among governments, corporations, and shadow organizations alike. The little that has been discovered is that all of Blicker’s efforts have culminated into one, singular project that promises to change the way that citizens of the Sol system view the universe and their places in it…

…Unfortunately, Lucius Blicker is now dead – the circumstances behind his untimely demise are as much a mystery as the paths that his projects once were and, with his passing, could it be that his legacy of a changed and enlightened future for the people of the galaxy is gone with him? Perhaps the reading of his last will and testament will shed some light on the matter, or at least provide some clues to those six disparate individuals whom “Uncle Lucius” has named as heirs to his legacy…

Our cast and the heirs to Lucius Blicker's legacy:

    • William "Billy" Bishop (Hopper; Fast 4/ Dedicated 1/ Dogfighter 1) played by Ayrn
    • Cherri Zheng (Menome; Smart 3/Cybernaut 3) played by Reralae
