I certainly don't take any offense to a "smoke free" game (and, unfortunately, I smoke, myself - baaaaaad habit, kiddies... mondo hard to quit). Smoking on a space ship is a bad idea (extra work for the atmo scrubbers, y'know)...

Jayne did stroll around with a cigar in 'is chompers from time to time, though... Never did see it lit, I don't reckon...

Woot! Now we know what the crew looks like for the most part... One question I've got, though (and the answers will kind of play into how Dash addresses and/or reacts to some - if not all - of your characters); what is everyone looking at age-wise? I figure Sam's in his early 30s, for example, and our "Young Gun" Blammm is early/mid 20s... What about the rest of ya?

For example, after Sam went on a spending spree and bought some boomers, clothes, and GRENADES (along with some other nifties), he ended up with around 1000 credits or so just burning a hole in his pocket... He kept an ammo allowance, of course, but what was left he funnelled back into the ship... Should do nicely towards the purchase of some canned food, an extra mule, med supplies, whatever we might need.

I sent the char sheet with gear, credits, and all that hooby-jooby your way just a bit ago, Roger. Just so everyone else is aware, I went ahead flipped some of Sam's points to allow for some planetary vehicles skills so, if no one else takes any, I reckon Dash'll be the designated driver on this crew, yeah?

Well, well, well... It sure looks like we've got us a right capable crew shapin' up here. How long ya reckon it'll be 'fore we're the socurge of the 'Verse?

Just out of curiosity, has anyone put any points into planetary vehicle skills - I reckon we're gonna have a hankerin' for a dirt-bound driver at one point or another and, if'n none of ya's spent points in it (or plans to for that matter) I s'pose I can finagle a few things and give Dash a dose o' drivin' lessons... if necessary.

Almost done gearing up, by the way... I should have a tidy little sum to ante up for Rocinante's needs once't it's all over, Cap.

Cannons, I say! We need a cannon or two or three or seventeen, don't we? I mean, c'mon, I know they ain't much use against them big Alliance cruisers an' sech, but we need somethin'!

Or am I just bein' twitchy?

All considered, Dash'd definitely lobby for some "defensive" stuff. Might even whittle down his percentage of the take in order to get some iron strapped to the Rocinante.

The waymeet was luxurious by Jal’s standards – or, at least, what his standards had been up until his return to Freegate anyway. Compared to the fetid, tumbledown hidey-holes of the back-alleys that he’d grown up in and especially to that cramped and moldy room in the Master’s tower, this place was a piece of the good life. He shuddered as the memory of that place came back to him. The Master seemed to be following him today, though… first, when the thri-kreen had laid him open and he had cursed himself for not being able to remember any of the spells the old codger had used to heal him while he carved away at his flesh, then, when those dark hands had reached for Wynter – she had screamed, then, much as she had the day the Master paid his visit to the mill – and now, recollections of that little, rat infested closet of a room… He was grateful for the chance, now, to splash some of the cool well-water on his face in an attempt to refresh his weary eyes and chase away those dark images. It had helped, for a time, to get the blood and road dirt washed off and to let the mind be still and rest a bit.

Look, my love, Wynter giggled a bit later, stirring him from his half sleep near the hearth, the dragon is back.

Jal smiled, more from relief at hearing Wynter’s voice than at the return of Sunset or the rather humorous exchange between the psuedodragon and Valentine’s familiar. “So I noticed, dear girl,” he replied. The little creature’s presence had rumbled his stomach with its odd sausage craving as it crept up under Dapple’s cloak. “You have been quiet, too,” he whispered, the taste for sausages inspiring him to dig through his pack in search of some herbs and spices that could help to season whatever game Char might bring back, “something troubles you?”

He hoped to goad her into telling him more about those hands or, at least, something that hinted at who they belonged to but… No, my spellbinder, she answered, nothing troubles me. I… I simply wished for you to rest… The spectral girl had fallen silent again and, at present, seemed to have slipped off to be on her own. He worried that his occasional prodding might irritate her and chase her off but he desperately wanted to know the meaning behind those hands.

“I’m sorry, my love,” he muttered as he felt her slip away, “I did not intend…” The urchin-mage sighed heavily, bundling the herbs and spices he had selected from his pack before closing it… Didn’t you? He chastised himself; You knew when you first mentioned it that she didn’t want to speak of it and yet you persisted… when she wishes you to know, she’ll tell you…

Shaking his head, Jal toes his pack aside and, clutching the bundle of seasonings, turns his eyes toward the fire and the shapes of the ranger and the rogue sitting just beyond. Neither of these two seemed the friendliest of sorts and both – particularly the woodsman who had gone to great and not unnoticed lengths to avoid him – seemed more than a little put off by Jal. The wizard didn’t quite understand why but he hoped he could perhaps help to rectify that by contributing more than simple magical skills to this venture… Tentatively he approached the hearth and regarded Char and Dapple with a look that was a mixture of curiosity and apology for intrusion… for, as he drew nearer, he realized that the two were in the midst of their own hushed conversation.

“Forgive the intrusion, gentlemen,” he offered a tired smile and his eyes ticked briefly to Sunset’s tail as it whipped out from under Dapple’s cloak then disappeared back into the folds of fabric, “I thought, perhaps, a bit of seasoning might serve to make those birds all the more tasty.” His stomach rumbled as he held out the bundle he had prepared, uncertain to which of them he should offer the thing; “I…if you like,” he suggested, “I…I could help to cook…”

((OOC: Not really expecting that Jal will be invited to sit and listen in on the convo, of course, and if he's "stared at blankly" or otherwise made to feel as if he's intruding, he'll simply leave the herbs and go tend to the business of the bug-mage's staff and amulet... The staff he'll decide to burn on he fire since it can't be used properly, but the amulet is another story... he'll share his discovery of it's properties with at least Talas and possibly Arien...))

What… You wanna talk to me? What for? It ain’t like yer gonna get some kinda soul-savin’ revelation out of it or nothin’… Besides, talkin’ ain’t my strong suit these days. I’ve seen enough… done enough… that there just ain’t the words to cover it no more, get me?

Wong ba Duhn! Are you still standin’ there?

A’right, look, if I give ya somethin’ will it get ya outta my face?

I used to fly and fight for the Alliance… they trained me well and used me even better. I was one of those “black bag” cats who got the jobs that no one else wanted. I’m talkin’ the really ugly mi tian gohn, mei mei! You honestly don’t wanna know what I’ve done and, I really ain’t keen on tellin’ ya, get me? (Soon as I did you’d probably be tryin’ ta figure me out or sell me out, one or the other, and that wouldn’t be good for neither one of us.) Since we’re gonna be crew and all, though, I reckon I’ll give ya this much…

My name’s Samuel Dash… you can call me Sam, or Dash, it don’t really matter, I’ll answer to either and, besides, as far as you know that ain’t my real name, no how. Go ahead, check the cortex if you want, you won’t find me in there… Even if ya did, it’d mean some bad juju for you and some really heavy movin’ plans for me. All ya gotta know is that, if it flies, I can fly it, if it shoots, I can shoot it – probably a lot quicker than you could ever hope to – and, if you want to disappear, well, I can help ya there, too… one way or another.

Whaddya mean, why’d I leave the Alliance? Didn’t I just get done tellin’ ya that ya don’t wanna know? Damn, but yer pushy! Listen, let’s just say that after doin’ all the dirty work I done fer those bastards, I come to a point where I got tired of pullin’ their jobs and I had to get out, okay? So, that’s what I did… I got out… It wasn’t easy, puhn yoh, and it sure as hell wasn’t none too amicable… and, even though I’m a ghost in the cortex, I ain’t entirely sure that I ain’t bein’ tracked… So, if yer smart… and right now, you look reasonably intelligent even if ya are breathin’ out yer mouth… you’ll leave it at that and not ask me about it again, get me?

((Still needs a little polish and the GM, of course will likely get the "full details," but that's pretty much Dash for ya.))

The dash to the escape pods hadn’t been anywhere near as difficult as the miraluka padawan had imagined it would have been, especially considering the fracas that had played out in the passenger berth just moments ago. In fact, despite Lana’s sporadic pauses to slice some security terminals in an effort to slow down any pursuers, Caise hadn’t so much as sensed even a wandering trooper between the passenger compartment and the shuttle… Of course, they could be anticipating these very actions and may be content to blast us to dust once the shuttle is clear of the ship

Caise didn’t dwell overlong on this, though. It appeared that the Force was indeed with the group and had it in its will that they should at least escape the Kul Kura. As he slipped through the hatch behind the others, the young jedi finally returned his lightsaber to its place beneath his outer robes and found what passed for a seat in the cramped space among these sentients whom, it appeared, would be with him for a bit longer. It wasn’t until an explosion tore apart the Kul Kura and violently rocked the escaping shuttle that Caise realized that they hadn’t been pursued because, at least in the minds of those who had captured the ship, they weren’t the primary objective and, thus, less than important to the mission’s outcome.

He gave a slow shake of his head as he sensed the lives aboard the Duro vessel wink out of their place in the Force but, otherwise, sat in silence as Mercury did his best to safely guide the shuttle-pod to Tanaab’s surface. That task, the jedi knew, must not have been an easy one considering the damage done to the tiny craft as the larger vessel exploded behind it and the effects of being caught precariously in the planet’s gravity well. Even without physical sight, the controlled “free-drop” to the surface of the planet was disconcerting and, for a moment, Caise was thankful that he couldn’t see the spinning and spiraling approach of Tanaab’s surface as the little ship hurtled through the atmosphere… just the sensation of it threatened to turn his stomach more than once…

“No way we’ll make it to a spaceport,” he heard the young pilot say, “Looks like a crash landing…”

Just as well, Caise mused, preparing himself for the bone-jarring bumps and skids that were yet to come, Landing at a spaceport likely wouldn’t be the wisest of choices considering that the ship we just left behind has just exploded in orbit. He turned his blind eyes towards Damanil. And, since we’ve already been inadvertently branded rebels, sympathizers, or worse I doubt that any reception we might have received would have been cordial

The impact as the shuttle pod carved a gouge in Tanaab’s crust was violent enough to toss bodies around the tiny cabin but not so bad that anyone had sustained serious injury from what he could tell. After shaking of the effects of the crash, the first thing that Caise heard was the almost impossibly cheerful voice of the young pilot.

“Surprise! We’re alive!”

Following that was the still irritated and impatient voice of the Kul Kura’s engineer. “Now what?” Lana demanded.

“Now, miss,” Caise said matter-of-factly as he freed himself from the tiny seat and made for the hatch, “we determine where we are and where we must go to get to where we need to be.”

((OOC: Okay, let’s get out of this crate and have a peek about before we go running off willy-nilly, shall we? If it’s possible to do so before heading towards the nearest city, Caise will make an attempt to contact Master Trask’s “associate” and let him know that he has arrived… maybe there’ll be a chance of some assistance there?))

Subject: Cleaning up and camping out...

Jal’s weary gaze also panned the surrounding landscape in search of the missing horses – the way he felt right now, the very thought of having to walk more than a few yards exhausted him. Despite that, though, the mage was eager to be away from this place and, if it came to it, he would force himself to walk the entire way to the keep to do so. The talk among the party now was of interrogating the thri-kreen mage, sending the boys on their way to Freegate, and, thankfully, moving the party to safer ground… Jal was in favor of at least two of the three.

If it had wanted to talk to us, Wynter suggested even as Spellbinder glanced in the direction of the bug still pinned under Valentine’s boot, I don’t suppose it would have attacked first, my love.

“No, Wynter,” he whispered as he approached the others gathering around the bug and called to mind a formula to make the thri-kreen’s speech understandable, “perhaps not…”

The interrogation had not gone well. The thri-kreen wizard seemed to gibber little more than nonsense – though Wynter reminded him that nonsense was often used to mask other, more important information and he would be wise to keep the bug’s words fresh in his memory – and, when all was said and done, Talas had dispatched the creature with a quick stroke of his blade. With that done, the others all made ready to escort the boys back to their homestead, tend to Charles’ burial, and send the brothers on their way to Freegate… Jal, however, found himself wondering about the thri-kreen’s staff and, before seeking out his own horse and joining his compatriots, stooped to retrieve the thing. As his fingers closed around the staff, the urchin-mage also noticed the strange, compass like amulet that had once hung around the bug’s neck. “Plenty of time to study both of these later,” he yawned, spying the mist-gray mare near the forest’s edge. Slipping the amulet into his pouch and clutching a staff in each hand, Jal retrieved the horse and joined up with the rest as they set out for the boys’ homestead. Soon after, with Charles’ body committed to the earth, his sons provisioned, endowed with a letter from Kilgim (and a sum of coin contributed by the entire party), and sent on their way to Freegate, Char lead their own party onward in the other direction.

The sun was beginning to set when they reached the waymeet and, though he had nodded off in the saddle once or twice between the farmstead and here, Jal was still tired and very grateful for what appeared to be a safe place to spend the night. After the horses were stabled and tended to, each member of the party set about tending to the duties of the camp. Char, who seemed to make certain to avoid Jal as much as possible, had slipped off into the woods to hunt for dinner. Dapple had disappeared at some point and returned just as silently bearing an armload of firewood. Everyone, it seemed, knew what their part was in the pitching of camp except for Jal. He offered to assist where he could, of course – he could at least get the fire going on the hearth, if nothing else – but otherwise, stayed out of the way of those who seemed more keen on how these things should be done.

You still need rest, my spellbinder...

((OOC: Jal will help with the camp where he can, of course, but I imagine that he’ll seek out a quiet corner and much of his time will be spent resting, studying/examining the staff and amulet recovered from the thri-kreen mage – use of an identify spell, here, if necessary – and, possibly chattering quietly with Wynter if the others seem content to “leave the odd little mage be”… He will reply if spoken to, however, but he is very wrapped up in his thoughts about those "dark hands" that were reaching for Wynter and figuring out the bug-mage's gear... ))
