Subject: Sooo...

...something in the vein of Trans Siberian Orchestra type "Christmas rock", then, or is it more like an Aerosmith does Good King Wenceslas kind of rock?

The lyrics aren't bad by themselves but, without an idea of the music that might go along with them, it's kind of difficult to interpret the "flow," you know? Like I said, though, not at all a bad start... I'll be interested to see how it progresses.

Topic: The Fates of Fortune
Subject: Uncertainty or resolution?

A somewhat crooked grin curled across his lips as his fingers fell away and, his gaze still soaking her in, he stepped back a pace. When they met the place just above her knees where the coat gave way to still bare flesh, his yellow eyes flitted away for an instant, seeming to consider the far wall of the crypt and what the world beyond may have in store. The sudden sensation that there were eyes upon the two of them… eyes from far away but eyes that still saw everything as if there were a third person in the close confines of the mausoleum’s walls… flattened the grin on the mith’ganni’s lips and, even in the gloom of the chamber, caused his own eyes to narrow. It was the same, uncanny sense that had washed over him earlier in the night and stirred him briefly from his reverie to ensure that Cay was still curled against him and that they had, in fact, been alone. His gaze returned to her, then, and, rubbing thoughtfully at his chin, gave her makeshift garb a more critical consideration. “Appealing as that is on you, melamin,” Nyx murmured after a moment, the grin returning to his lips as he turned to slide the lid of the sarcophagus away, “it could use another touch or two… for practicality, yes?”

From the coffin’s interior, Nyx first produced a pair of soft, black trousers which he offered over to Cay with one hand while the other sought out other items from the assassin’s cache. “Those should go some way to keeping the chill from your legs,” he said as he felt the fabric leave his fingers, “it is not a long walk to Taellyn’s but it is autumn…” Next, he found a narrow, leather belt among the stowed gear and, after fitting the scabbard of his rubied dagger to it, turned and secured the thing about Cay’s waist. “If you are to kill with it,” he purred, his fingers brushing over the dagger’s hilt as softly as his lips brushed over hers, “you may as well keep it close and learn its weight, yes?”

Again, the witch responded with little more than a flickering of molten amber eyes and the faint twitching of one corner of her mouth… and again, Nyx found himself distracted from what he was doing by the trepidation that she attempted to veil behind the expression. For an instant, he simply gazed into the depths of her eyes and, there, tried to find some sort of clue as to what troubled her but, whatever it was, she had masked it quite well… only the sense of its presence was to be found and that was far from enough. His mouth opened, then, as if he were about to speak…

There is more than your worry about the tree, is there not, elen en cormamin? More, even, than your worry that we two should not be, perhaps? What is it that has happened in your dreams to still your tongue?

…but, just as quickly, the mith’ganni’s mouth closed again, the words he had intended to speak curtailed by the return of that thin smile, and he forced his eyes from hers with a faint shake of the head. “There is work to do,” he murmured under his breath, returning his attentions to the coffin’s interior, “and preparations to be made…”

A dark, mocking laughter echoed from somewhere in the back of his mind as he set about outfitting himself. More difficult to leave me behind than you might have imagined, is it not? You profess not to need me and yet you still call upon me with that mantra…

Nyx allowed himself a disconcerted scowl as he donned a purple-black tunic. A thing of habit, he growled in reply, nothing more. I am free of you.

The laughter again. You may defy me all you wish, you insipid point-ear… fly in the face of your obligation to me… deny that you are what you are because of what I have given you… but you’ll never be free of me, Nyx Shyndyn… not in the way you are likely thinking, at any rate…

“Dinalle,” Nyx growled under his breath. He tried to shake the voice from his head as started sweeping the myriad coin purses that littered one corner of the coffin into a larger sack. A cascade of his own freed hair fell into his grasp just then and the same motion intended to toss those smaller pouches into the larger also caused him to tug sharply on those locks… Prien’s way of defying the elf’s dismissal…

…You truly believe that you can just turn your back on me and think that will be the end of it, don’t you? You believe that your denial is all it takes and I will simply allow you to walk away unpunished?

The mith’ganni’s inner sneer may have crept to the surface and flashed briefly across his pale lips as he flung the locks of his hair angrily back over his shoulder. He tried explicitly to will The Executioner’s taunting voice from his mind as he twisted his hair into a hasty pony-tail and, once he thought he had done so, let out a slow breath and returned to the sorting of his gear – He’d need to take it all, wouldn’t he? When he left the Drasnian crypt this morning, it would be for the last time, after all…

You think, perhaps, that you already have, Shyndyn?

…he may have hesitated for the briefest of instants when Prien’s voice persisted....

You don’t even realize that I started unraveling your thread the very moment you started to wander, do you?

…but it was only for the flickering of an eye – scarcely enough to have been noticed – and, if the god’s voice wouldn’t be silenced, Nyx decided, he would simply ignore it…

And you certainly don’t see that this witch is part of your undoing…

…Ignore it…

She’ll be the end of you Nyx Shyndyn… she’s seen it herself… I’ve shown her…

…Ignore…

Ask her… Look at her, now… you can see it… if you look…

“Enough!” The word escaped into the air… louder than he had intended if, in fact, he had intended to speak it aloud at all… You will not bring her into this, Nyx insisted, gritting his teeth and clenching fists against the unexpected outburst. Just then Nyx was sure that he felt the roots of Cayrimsa’s tree twist deeper into his flesh and it’s branches spread further across his back… it was a sensation not unlike being burned, he thought; the tendrils of the roots knotted flaming tendrils about the base of his spine and the searing heat spread through the entirety of his being as it surged upwards and burned Prien’s taunting laughter from his mind…

He felt Cay’s eyes on him, now, and, without turning to look at her, could sense the anxious curiosity in her gaze.

“That will be enough,” Nyx reiterated – more softly, this time – his tone once again calm and level, as he hauled the hastily packed duffel out of the coffin and, turning to face Cay, set the sum of his worldly possessions on the floor at his feet… “Nothing that is left here is of any consequence… I shan’t be returning to this place, again…”

His moon-hued eyes took her in, pausing for an overlong moment on the embroidered depiction of Prien’s skeletal visage where it now stared back at him from the padded coat she now wore…

…the end of you… a memory whispered as he stood locked in that hollow-eyed gaze…look at her…

…The mith’ganni blinked and directed his attentions away from Prien’s eyes to Cayrimsa’s…

…The end of you, Nyx Shyndyn… the remembered voice began to disappear as the wind in the branches, …She’s seen it… ask her.

… he contemplated her face, then, absorbing every detail – from the way certain features and nuances of expression were hidden behind the spill of her hair and the way her hat cast shadows to muddle others to the flat and distant manner that somehow lent sharp contrast to the light that sparked in the deep amber pools of her eyes – and the smile that eventually carved a razor-thin line across his lips, he realized, may have borne a bit of the same uncertainty he sensed in her. “Cay,” he whispered into the space between them as he slithered a step closer, “are you…”

…planning to kill me?..

“…are you certain about this thing we are about to do?”

Even behind the veil of her hair and in the penumbra cast by the brim of that hat, he saw her brow climb and her mouth open as if to reply… He pinned the unspoken words to her lips with the tip of a finger and the scant shake of his head. “You must know, elen en cormamin, that what I plan to set in motion here, changes many things,” he continued, letting himself fall deeper and deeper into her shadowed gaze in search of that most inner spark of her soul, “and, for me, even now, there is no turning from it. For you, though, Cayrimsa Ettelenya, if you wish it, things can remain the same…”

The cold, razor-edged smile warmed a bit and he allowed himself to blink once before he continued.

“…All you need to in order to make it so is but go the other way when we leave, yes? You disappear back into the city and, eventually, back to Dmitrova and your station within the Syndicate and, when I return…”

If you return.

“…I will begrudge you nothing… I will still give you all that I have promised… For all you have given me, melamin, it is the least I can offer.”

Nyx let his finger fall from her lips, then, and lingered a moment longer in her gaze before his smile took on a wickedness that, to Cay, was much more characteristic of the elven assassin. “Olsta is just the beginning of what is to come, Cay,” he whispered, shrugging into his cloak, “and while I, of course, have my own motivations to consider in all of this, it is not for my own sake that I set this in motion. What I do, elen en cormamin, I do for you… because you, above all else, have given me the answers to questions that even the stars could not provide.

You can go, as I said,” he purred as he secured the sack that contained the material trappings of his life and secreted it away within the cloak’s folds, “and I will return to give you what I have promised you…”

He smiled a vicious, yet somehow seductive smile before he leaned in and stole a taste of her lips.

“Or,” he finished, pulling away only far enough to allow the words to pass from his lips to hers, “if you truly feel what I feel in all of this, you can come with me and take it for yourself, yes?”

((Far from my best, I know, but I think it has finally knocked the rust off, so to speak... Here's hoping this is the first in a succession of updates, eh?))

...the best place to start, if you're looking to get into a game, is in the Recruitment Forums. Any games that are looking for players (or players that are looking games, for that matter) usually will have a posting there.

If you're interested in a "brand-spanking-new, fresh-out-of-the-box" game that's looking for players, I know that cdnflirt (or Flirty, as we oldtimers tend to call her) is looking for some folks to fill out her Safari Zone game. The recruitment thread is here, and it loojs as if she's recently tacked on an intro post for the game itself here. Give it a look and see if it interests you. If so, sign right up... If not, keep looking... something will turn up sooner or later, I can practically guarantee it.

Welcome aboard, Drabbit (dagnabbit, I tunk I taw a wabbit!)... Soooo glad to have you in the fold, so to speak.

Don't worry about being new, either. I'm sure you'll find that all of us Innmates (staff and regulars alike) are, for the most part, helpful and accommodating... usually all you've got to do if something's got you confuzzled or befungled is shoot out a post or a PM, then kick back and watch all the rest of us come runnin'!

...I think it might have been "The Fall of Gil-Galad" but I'm not 100% sure... I seem to remember Sam reciting two poems around the time the Fellowship was near Weathertop - that bit from The Fall of Gil'Galad and another, more humorous one regarding a troll - just can't recall the sequence right off the top of my head. :/

Pit's gonna recommend I read the whole trilogy, again... just watch.

To whom is the following quote attributed?

"I was talking aloud to myself. A habit of the old: they choose the wisest person present to speak to; the long explanations needed by the young are wearying."

...t'weren't nuffin'. Like I said, that's kind of why we mods are here, isn't it? Maintain order (such as it is) on the boards and in chat is on our list of responsibilities, of course, but, since the Inn is such a great place we don't have to actually do much of that "policing for trouble" kind of thing... soooo, top priority for us, I guess, should be helping out the other Innmates where, when, and how we can, right?

Anyway, sorry to see this one didn't take off for you, pyro, but kudos for closing with grace and not "giving up" all together. Best of luck with the 2012 revival... remember, too, that patience pays great dividends, dude.

Definitely "thought provoking" either way...

...the first thing I did after I read this was read it again. It took that second reading to get the "flow" of the verses, I think... Once I got that down and made sense of what I was actually reading, I thought; "Man, this girl has got to find a better class of guy..." and, at the same time, I thought; "But if she found a better class of guy where ever would she come up with these nifty little poems?"

Oh what a conundrum!!!!

Good stuff, flirty... Kind of a "spoken word" vibe to this one... I'm diggin' it.

Topic: Pokemon dungeons-stopped
Subject: Angry?

Don't get angry, Pyro... in all honesty, getting angry doesn't do much more than stress a body out, you know?

That said, I know it can be frustrating to put up a recruitment thread and/or start a game only to have it languish with little interest shown in it beyond your own... It's happened to all of us from time to time, I'm sure and, yes, it's frustrating. Like I said, though, getting mad about it doesn't do anything to pique interest or draw in potential players. So, instead of letting the anger and frustration get to you, why not channel those energies into something a little more productive that could possibly go a little further to "selling your concept," so to speak?

After having reread your intro post, here, I've come up with a few thoughts, ideas, suggestions that might help you do just that...

  • Flesh out your concept a little bit. Give potential players some more info as to what the backstory is where your game is concerned and/or maybe a hint of an idea as to what some of the goals are... Throwing some details like that into your initial recruitment posts will often serve to inspire those who read it inasmuch as they can come up with better character concepts and/or motivations... Or, if you're looking for more of a roleplay light/battle-heavy pokemon arena kind of thing, specify that.

  • Speaking of Pokemon, I can honestly say that I hadn't seen very many (if any) calls for folks to sign up for any sort of Pokemon RP, hereabouts until recently... The fact that this particular recruitment isn't drawing much interest may just be the result of there not being a very big "market" for pokemon based games at the Inn.

Given that, there are a couple of options to entertain, there, I think... You can A) get some of your RL friends (or friends from other sites you frequent) who play pokemon to join the Inn and "boost the marketbase," B) write up some other posts to drum up interest in pokemon amongst the rest of the Innmate population (Got any ideas for "new" pokemon of your own? Write them up and post them in the Personal Creations forum), or, C) maybe abandon the Pokemon idea for the time being and try another concept... You know, maybe try a reboot of your 2012 idea? Give the recruitment a re-write, flesh it out a bit, etc, and see if you don't get some new nibbles.

  • (And before I even type this one out, let me assure you that, in no way is it intended as a "slam"...) Work on your writing skills a tad... I can tell you've got plenty of thoughts and ideas going on in that head of yours and your enthusiasm to get things going is definitely evident; however, I have to admit that your intro post, here, seemed a bit "jumpy" and, as a result, lost a bit of its coherence as a result... The post looks a bit more like a "freewriting/brainstorming" session than an actual "call for players"... the ideas are all there but they seem to be kind of willy-nilly where presentation is concerned... Take those "brainstorming" ideas, give them a little "sort and polish," and then re-post and see if you at least get more folks stopping by and commenting (if not joining).

I'm sure that your Dad can help you out where the writing is concerned... he's a fairly decent writer himself, you know, and it couldn't hurt to ask for his help here and there, could it? Heck! Ask any of us here, for that matter! We may not all be as readily accessible as your dad might be but I can practically guarantee that there are more than a couple of us who would be glad to offer some guidance and assistance if you'd ask and/or accept.

Anyway, Pyro... like I said, none of this is intended to belittle you, make you feel bad, or anything along those lines... just trying to help out, if I can.

Subject: Yeah...

...I'm fairly sure that most versions of D&D, at least, take size and stat modifiers into account to some degree, Vil.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that halflings are limited in weapon choices due to the fact that they're simply too small to wield them effectively... not sure if that would prevent a halfling from taking up a longsword and calling it a "two-handed claymore", though, but I think the mechanics are at least hinted at in a majority of the better thought out systems, anyway.

I think part of the problem, though, (and, perhaps, more of where Alacrity was trying to go with this thread) is that all of the various modifiers that can be applied can get kind of convoluted and end up as "cast offs"...

I liked the idea of some kind of table/chart that could be a "quick reference" kind of thing, to be honest... As mentioned earlier, though, I'm not much on the DM side of things and, as a player, I prefer that the rules just kind of disappear into the background where I don't have to give them much thought...

Topic: Does Size Matter?
Subject: Hmmm....

...I'm not much of a DM, myself, but it only makes sense that there would be both "to hit" and "damage" modifiers to be considered where different sized opponents are concerned.

Using the example of Halfling vs Giant: The Halfling would certainly have an easier time hitting the giant (especially from range, I think) unless s/he's just a gods-awful shot. That being said, I'm fairly sure that the damage from a "halfling sized" weapon would be more or less negligible (depending on the specific type of giant, of course... that halfling weapon would do more damage to a hill giant as opposed to a storm giant, for instance).

Now, you flip that scenario around and put the giant on the offensive and you've got the complete opposite... Halflings being as small as they are, it's going to be a bit trickier for a giant to see/target them, right? So, the giant might not be as "accurate" when it comes to his attacks but, when they hit, look out! Where once stood a halfling, there is now but a quivering puddle of pudding in the footprint of a giant!

When it comes right down to it, I suppose, if you look at the halfling vs giant scenario, the giant's going to have the upper hand regardless of the modifiers (especially in a one on one situation)... In order to deal any significant damage to the giant, the halfling is going to have to expend quite a bit of energy and/or ammo... The giant, on the other hand, may pull the old "swiiing-and-a-miss" a few (dozen, hundred, thousand?) times depending on how small, agile, and/or crafty the halfling is but, when it comes right down to it, all the giant should need is one glancing blow and it's halfling hash, isn't it?

Now... take that same giant and have him lumber into a village full of li'l hairfoots and you can switch things up again... 100 halflings vs 1 Giant? Halflings stand a chance... but get ready for major casualties...

Most times, I've simply used Photoshop or some other graphics suite/program to create or edit maps, myself. If you're leaning in that direction and want something "worth while" on the cheap (that is to say "free"), I'd recommend the GIMP... free, open-source, image editing... with a few plug ins and a bit of practice, you can make this thing do everything that Photoshop can, I think.

Now, as for actual map making software, there is a program out there called Campaign Cartographer... not free but definitely a very cool product... if I had need of such things more often, I'd definitely invest, myself.

And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see, the facelicks would all be free
and the Eol attached would say,
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend

Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend

If it's a car you lack
I'd surely buy you a cadillac
Whatever you need, anytime of the day or night

I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow

And when we both get older
With walking canes and hair of gray
Have no fear, even though it's hard to hear
I will stand real close and say,
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend

(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend
(I want to thank you)
Let me tell you bout Pit F(r)iend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend

And when we die and float away
Into the night, the Milky Way
You'll hear me call, as we ascend
I'll see you there, then once again
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend

Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend
Whoa, tell you about Pit F(r)iend
(Thank you right now, for being Pit F(r)iend)
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend
(I wanna tell you right now, and tell you again)
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend
(I wanna thank you, thank you, for being Pit F(r)iend)
Thank you for being Pit F(r)iend

*pats Pyro on his widdle head* Aw, c'mon, kiddo! You're not quite the king of smites just yet... I think Ryst still holds that title... Prince or Duke, perhaps...

And, hey, you've come a long way in the short time you've been here... lookit that applaud count climbing, huh?

Anyhoo, glad you feel so welcome, Wrath... we strive to make people comfy-cozy-mooshky-mooshk around here, you know? We absolutely love it when new folks join up and stick around to become active participants in our little community of loons.

While I like and support this name, boss, I have to admit that the first thought that ran through my head when you floated it out there was "Really???"... Mostly that reaction was due to the fact that the rest of your kids seem to have "biblical" names (for lack of more 'at the ready' terminology, atm), so the thought of a 'Tanis' in that string of names was almost like a mental speedbump for a second.

Oh, and speaking of your kids... 'd the Christmas card... those Suddeth kids just get better looking year after year!

Sooo good to see a new LD strip!

Loved it, of course! Steve's wickedly smug/ominous expressions at the "stop giving him ideas" comments were classic and, IMO, Annick's artwork is really starting to shine in this one... her best work on this strip, yet! Kudos!

Another one?!?!

You guys are just crazy with this baby-making business! Are ya shooting for your own baseball team, maybe? Or a TV show - The Suddeth Bunch - perhaps?

In all seriousness, though... Congratulations and, of course, best wishes.

And my vote, as far as Tanis goes, is a definite yes. I'm all for unique/unusual names, myself.
