Topic: Voyages of Rocinante - Serenity/Firefly RPG
Subject: This is... familiar... Ahhh, nostaligia!

Edgar’s Place, 1:00 pm, Day Three

Dash stepped through the door to Edgar’s Place with the idea that he’d have a drink to ease his nerves back before he headed back to Rocinante… Everything the pilot had seen today had done very little to improve his already sour opinion of Beylix… and the day’s events had gone a good long way to sending his thoughts into a tailspin buffeted up by the turbulence in his brainpan…

Ain’t no sense in goin’ back all bunched up an’ runnin’ th’ risk o’ sayin’ or doin’ somethin’ stupid… Ya do that sometimes… Sam…

He paused for a second, just inside the door, and swept the room with a wary eye… The clientele wasn’t of the highest caliber in the ‘Verse (mostly smelters and ranchers) and the girls wasn’t much to look at, neither, let alone grapple with (good thing too, cuz ya’d like ta catch more’n a smile if ya was drunk enough ta be so inclined). All in all, Edgar’s seemed to be your average, hole in the wall kind of place where them folks as was the hard-working, low-earning types tended to go after work in order to ease an ache with some alcohol or scratch (or maybe catch?) an itch and throw away their fun money with one of the haggard looking barwhores.

Kinda reminds me o’ Blansky’s, Dash mused as his feet clipped him towards the bar. That thought started, at least, to start putting some smoothness back into the rampant path his thoughts had been flying and, in remembering that tiny little saloon back on Jiangyin where a proprietor named Bob Blansky gave a new-born Sam Dash the first steps in a new life, the pilot’s scowling throttled back some…

“What ya’ll havin’?”

Sam’s eyes swung away from the room behind him for a moment, scanned the shelves behind the bar, and then fixed on the bartender; “Whiskey, I reckon.”

The tender plunked a shot glass on the counter, poured it half full, and then paused, squinting expectantly at him. Sam squinted back, the corners of his mouth twitching upwards a fraction, and then reached into a pocket and slapped a coin he found there onto the bar beside the glass. The tender nodded as quickly as he smiled and finished filling the glass.

As his fingers closed around the shot, the sound of a chair scraping across the floor caught Sam’s attention and he glanced back over his shoulder to see what was likely to be the beginnings of a tussle…

“Gorram it! Git off, Mary! You’re messing with my luck.”

“Hey! You stoopid ijit! Don’t hurt her!”

“Go back to humping cattle ranch-boy!”
Yup, Sam smirked, lifting the shot glass and preparing to pour the whiskey down his gullet, Reminds me o’ Blansky’s a’right…

Suddenly, instead of the whiskey ending up warming his throat, his drink was splashed on his shirt and the glass was clattering on the floor at his feet. The verbal sparring between the smelter and the ranch-hand had gotten physical and the first guy to take a punch had reeled backwards and sent Sam’s whiskey toppling… Dash’s features twisted up in a mix of disappointment and irritation before he looked to the guy for an apology, but the rancher hadn’t stuck around long enough to give one… he was already charging back into the melee.

Sam watched the girls back away in order to clear the floor for the fight and then flicked a glance in the bartender’s direction to see the narrow man looking more than a little bored with the whole situation. He reached into his pocket for another coin, slapped it down on the bar and nodded at the tender; “I’ll be wantin’ another one, here, in jus’ a minnit.”

Then, the pilot reached up to snug his bandana up, pushed away from where he’d been leaning on the bar, sighed… “Yup… Jus’ like Blansky’s…” and waded into the fight, set to release a little frustration by quieting the place down before he had that drink…

“A’right,” he growled as he grabbed the first one and spun him around, “You boys is damagin’ my calm…”

((OOC: Let’s tussle!!! I figure, what with Sam’s thoughts on Blansky’s and all, he’s liable to “play bouncer” in this situation… yeah, he’ll pummel a fella or two or six, but he’ll toss ‘em out in the street when/if he gets a chance…))

Well, Murph thought, grinning with grim satisfaction as he watched the others react to his Army-inspired motivational speech, that worked better than I’d hoped it would…

“We could do both,” Jake pondered out loud, “but we'd have to split up, and that might not be a good idea. I don't know...”

“Nope,” Murph interjected, “Whatever we decide, we decide together and we stay that way. At least for now…”

“…I just want to thank you for not giving up on me,” Emily sniffed, a tear tracing it’s way down one pallid cheek, after stringing more words together in her last discourse than the mechanic could remember her having spoken in the last ten days, “And that I'll be beside all of you, no matter what happens.”

Murph nodded at this, wrapping an arm around the sickly girl’s shoulders and giving a reassuring squeeze. “We don’t give up on this team, Em,” he assured her, “Not on you or anyone else…”

The chatter continued for a little while longer; each member of the small group affirming their resolve and offering their input… the need for warmer clothes, the need to make the best use of the daylight that would be dwindling away all too soon, and, given the present circumstances, the ‘wisdom’ of continuing on foot and abandoning the idea of patching up the patrol car… and, when it was done, the decision was made that they would, in fact, be heading out on foot despite some obvious trepidation about having to skirt the huge pile up.

((…at this point, that Murph gives them the “formation demo” with the army men that I mentioned earlier and then we get moving…))

“…Are we the baddest MoFo’s in this valley of death,” Mac practically cheered before they formed up, stretching a bit more satisfaction out of Murph’s grin as he double-checked and topped off the loadout on the SLP.

“The baddest in the valley,” Murph nodded, clapping Mac on the shoulder as he moved to his position at the front of the line, “and don’t any of you forget it…” For the first time in quite a while, the mechanic’s eyes flicked towards Heaven instead of just the sky… Ya hear that, Lord? Baddest in the valley… back me up on that, would ya?

The sickly-sweet smell of death and decay hit him full on as they reached the pile up and Murph knew, before he even saw one, that there’d be bodies in that tangle of wreckage. “Breathe through your mouths not your noses, people,” he suggested to the rest as they drew closer and began to skirt the mess, “and keep moving… keep moving…”

They were nearly around the pile-up - having gotten there with more than one gag reflex, horrified look, or queasy commentary being kicked off as a result – and Murph’s head was on a swivel, scanning the north and south stretches of Halstead as the group continued eastward, when he caught sight of the creature stepping out of the shopfront a few doors up… He grumbled a curse as the creature shrieked and trained his shotgun on the thing as it bolted into a run… “Close it up,” he barked to the others, calling for them to collapse the formation into a defensive configuration…

“Oh, God…”

“Emily! Get behind me…”

“Alaster I’ll take the right on,e you take the left, we'll take the middle together.”

“Yeah... Alright got it.”

…Mac’s .357 barked… Alaster’s Browning boomed…

Again, Murph waited for the… Don’t say zombie… thing heading at them from the north to get just a little closer before he opened up on it with the SLP…

“Keep moving, folks! We’ve got places to be,” he hollered after that first shot, “Mac! Al! Check your fields of fire! Keep to your range! Shoot and move!

C’mon, people! Let’s go! Let’s go!”

((OOC: There we go… playing along… As stated above, Murph’s gunning for the zombie from the north; if that one goes down (even if it’s only for a moment) Murph will turn and crack off a shot at the ones coming from the south if there’s a clear field… continuing to holler out ‘orders’ in hopes of getting everybody on the eastern side of the pile up and not just standing in place while we get bumrushed… ))

...you interpreted my thoughts quite well, Tiamat... *nods*... Basically a triangle, formed by those of us with guns, on the outside surrounding a triangle of those with melee weapons only on the inside.

Work got away from me a bit yesterday and is looking as if it's going to be a killer today, as well, but am working on a post myself.

P.S. Again, good posts, gang! And, Malek... if Alaster's gonna freak out he'd better not do it now.

I'm also kind of thinking we need to try and keep moving towards our objective even as we brace up for the fight... Only 50% of our group has the potential to bring these things down at range, right now, so...

We "collapse" formation as mentioned previously and move (even if it's at a shuffle) with our new formation as we fire... Gunners - concentrate on taking down the zombies (don't matter if we kill 'em first shot, we're looking to slow them down and keep em at distance first and foremost so we can get to cover)... Jake - that group of three doesn't look at all like a bad option for that last molotov... everybody else, stay inside the "ring of fire" supplied by the gunners and, if any of those flesh eaters gets close, THEN start mashin' with all you've got, otherwise keep moving... If we can't make the pharm, let's at least get our 'back to a wall' and see what we can do about creating a choke point... we do NOT wanna get surrounded...

BTW, O dastardly GM... any chance there's the scent of leaking fuel co-mingling with the stench of death emanating from that pile up?

We're 'KROOed!!!

My initial thoughts = Collapse the formation - folks without firearms to the center, folks with firearms on the "outside" covering the fields of fire that are available...

Pondering some more, of course, and working up a post but there's some thoughts for us to start with, gang... Let's hear other options and ideas before we commit our group to being the lunch special at Golden Corral, eh?

...I'm honored and humbled that you attribute any of your 'growth' as an RPer to anything I've done... all i do here, dude, is let my multiple personality disorder run riot, you know? So, like Meri has already said, thanks for the compliment.

All that aside, we on the staff at RDI are kind of on staff here for that exact reason, you know... Take the 'newbies' under our wing, show them the ropes, help them improve, etc... and, as such, we're always glad to help out where we can (whether it's as simple as "how do I navigate the forums, where do I post this" to as complex as "I have no clue how to even start doing the PbP business, could you give me some pointers, help me develop a character, etc"). So, never be timid about asking if we can give you some direct input or assistance and, I guess, since it's working for you so far, don't hesitate to 'learn by osmosis' either...

You're doing great, Malek! keep it up, bud!

Honestly, as good as the thought of having transportation might sound, Murph's thinking leave the car for now and just get to that Save Rite...
