No... I don't think I do... no sense in creating a character just to have him lose a limb (or, worse, a beard) in the first fight, eh?

Ummm... making a few tweaks to my character, too, by the way. based on the helpful nudge you gave me the other day, Almerin, I'm re-rolling for a ranger/rogue as opposed to full rogue. Should have that done and ready to send to you tonight.

...anyone remember him in "The Dead Zone"? Like most movies based on Stephen King's stories, the movie didn't quite hold up to the book but (like Pet Semetary) it came pretty close... another not necessarily scary movie, too, but definitely kind of mindbending.

Actually, I think that's the first movie I remember seeing Walken in, now that I think about it...

Him and Chris Walken... *shudders*... Love those guys!

Not sure I'd agree with all of AOL's picks on this list, by the way... I mean "The Ring"?... Disturbing... yeah... Weird... yeah... Scary or horrifying? Not... had to watch that thing three times before I managed to stay awake through the whole flick.

Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street? The first movies of each series were what I'd call scary (maybe even Friday the 13th part 2) but, after that, just so much 'cheese' and 'gore'... no real horror or anything... great splatter films, sure, but not scary.

Actually, I'm sitting here, now, trying to figure out exactly when blood and guts trumped suspense and creepiness for "must haves" in horror movies... hmmmm... oughta look into that... mebbe write a thesis or something...

One of my personal 'favorites' in the realm of Scary flicks:

"Near Dark" - Again, not really a jump and flinch fest as far as horror movies go, but a really cool vampire flick nonetheless. Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton kind of 'steal the show' from the main characters in this one, too, but it's worth a rental. Produced and released in the late 80s or early 90s I think...
Worth a watching at least once.

Topic: A Cold Day in Hell
Subject: Hooah? HOOAH!!!

Kane had been sitting, the SAW resting but at the ready just as he was. His fireteam had taken a serious hit from whatever the hell that thing in the cave was… Lee, Person, and Johannsen had been lucky to come out of it at all, he figured, and he himself was surprised that he’d managed to escape that cave with an embarrassing puke fit having been the worst of it… he was glad for the moment’s rest, it provided him with enough time to still the shaking of his nerves and reflect on what the hell was happening in this frostbitten corner of hell.

“Sergeant?” Kane’s eyes swept toward Lee, “I’m sorry I let that ‘thing’ get the best of me, I let the team down and endangered the mission and our lives. It …. took me by surprise.. it .. wont happen again.”

“No apologies, Lee,” Kane grunted, nodding shortly to the man, “It’s done and over and we lived through it. Besides, how in the hell’d we know to be expecting… whatever the frig that was?”
He tries not to wince from the pain as he speaks, but the effort of speaking is evident to anyone watching. He hefts his carbine, racking the bolt to strip off a round out of the fresh magazine he installed.

“I’m ready for some payback, Sarge!” Lee replied with a weak smile after racking the bolt on his carbine. The man’s face was as pale as Kane’s butt and, physically, he was more than a little wobbly but, like the hard-charger he was, Lee seemed eager to do battle with something.

"Sarge,” Pearson chimed in next, “If he goes, I'll back him up, I sure will! I wanna put a grenade into that thing, whether I put it in it's mouth or up it's ... ... well, anyway, I wanna put a grenade in it! I know we need rest, but I want another crack at that thing before it goes away. We gotta show it that we don't back down just because we hurt! I wanna get a chance to see what that thing does when it gets hurt. Maybe we can tame it after all. I always wanted a weird pet ..."

Kane couldn’t help but smile a bit at the balls these Rangers were showing. Neither one could scarcely muster the strength to stand up, right now, let alone open up another can of firefight on whatever else might be waiting for them out there, but they were damn sure willing to try. Shaking his head, the SSgt abandoned his rest and got on his own feet, his proud but questioning gaze ticking between Lee and Pearson. “HooAh,” he barked, acknowledging the Rangers’ ‘refuse to lie down’ attitude, “You troops’re…”

“Oh fine,” Johannsen interjected before Kane could follow up with his question as to whether the cold had maybe frostbitten their brains, “you two just go ahead and give that a try. You might make it back there if you leaned against each other or maybe crawled there. Then I can have the joy of practicing on you yet again. All I need is you to undo all the work I put in on you and start internal bleeding all over again. Sgt. Lee how many fingers am I holding up?”

Inga wasn’t holding up any fingers, of course, and Kane just smirked as his gaze travelled between the three. “You girls done pullin’ each others pigtails, now,” he asked, shouldering the SAW and clapping a hand on Lee’s shoulder. “I can appreciate the need for payback, Lee,” he said, his eyes moving from the Sgt to Pearson, “and I can appreciate Pearson, there, havin’ enough cajones to follow ya into the fire, but, in case ya missed it, troop, we got our asses handed to us and, if we went chargin’ back in there now and there turned out to be another one of those s#!^-smellin’ things waitin’ on us how much of a chance do ya think we’d have?

That’s right,” he rumbled, not waiting for an answer, “slim to friggin none! We got us an objective, Rangers, and, much as I hate ta say it, revenge and smelly-assed monsters fall under the heading targets of opportunity…”

“All right,” Kane fell silent when the Lieutenant’s attentions shifted from watching Blake and fell on them, “Chief Blake found reference to a computer that could contain the answers to our little dilemma, so that’s our next objective. I know some of you are injured—I know you want to get your sword back, Lee—but there’s a lot at stake here and I’m not about to risk it for a single weapon, no matter the sentimental value. If all works out, we’ll return for it… I’m not leaving anyone behind again seeing how well that turned out the last time we did, so pack it all up. We’re moving out in five.”

The Staff Sergeant nodded as Kernan reiterated the same points he had been getting to and, hooked a thumb in the el-tee’s direction as if to say ‘yeah, what he said.’

“ Kane…”

“Sir,” Kane nodded and made his way to the Lt’s side, “What’s the play el-tee?”

“We’re going back through that area where you found what you described as an alien. The last location we’ve got on this ‘agiles’ computer is in the administrator’s office on the sublevel. You’re going to take point so I want you to be on your game. You up to this, Ranger?”

“Born and bred, sir,” Kane acknowledged bringing the SAW into an at ready position

“Good. Then let’s get this team together and move out.”

“Roger that, sir,” Kane nodded, turning on his heel and regarding the others. “You heard the man, boys and girls. A$$holes and elbows! Shake it off, saddle up, and move ‘em out. I’m on point!”

((OOC: Rock and roll! Getting the feel for Kane and promise better posts as we go… Kane will spend the next few minutes double and triple checking his own gear, making sure everything is prepped and ready then, at the el-tee’s orders, will begin the sweep towards the admin office…))

Subject: Azazelites.

First, let me say that the Azazelites (or Cult of Azazel, if you prefer) are just a group that I came up with on the fly when scrawlign out Alex's original concept and backstory... Picked a random demon (well, not so random... I thought Azazel was a cool sounding name) and built the startings of a cult or dark coven around the info I was able to dig up on him/her/it...

That said, as the backstory and such has developed, I imagined that Azazelites (particularly those of the particular cult that Alex seems to be focused on) often have a penchant for extravagent jewelry and such (according to what I've read, the making of weapons and jewelry are supposedly crafts that the demon Azazel taught to humans, so I figured those things would tie in somehow). I had also figured that there may be a subtle tattoo or similar marking that members of the cult may take on at some stage in their 'devotion' aaand, lastly (where my original thoughts were concerned, anyway), I imagined that while most Azazelites are charming and physically attractive to no small degree that their essence is tainted by Azazel's influence and, as a result, the gifted may be able to 'see' that taint (via insight or something similar).

Anyway, as I said, the Azazelites are a quickly clumped together cult that I needed for Alex's backhistory and I have by no means solidified anything on them other than Alex holds them responsible for Emily's death... Feel free to take what I've got and manipulate as you will, Vesper. You're the chronicler, after all, and it's your game... I'd be happy, of course, to help out in any way that I can.

P.S. Alex might follow an Azazelite into a nightclub for the gifted but he'd certainly not confront him/her in such a public place... He'd wait for the Azazelite to leave, follow him/her out, tail them to an appropriate spot, and then try to kill them... very painfully....

I know that I've sometimes seen a nifty little hiccup in my PM folders, too... Say, for example, you've got 2 pages of PMs but only one actual message on pg 2... if you delete that message on pg 2 the screen will sometimes refresh to pg 2 again but with no messages to display. Most times, though, I get bounced back to pg 1 of the default inbox.

I'll keep monkeying around and see if I can reporduce your results, though.

Topic: The Sharpeness of Smoke
Subject: Business Hours - The Phone Call

Thank you… Show off… Jumpy, aren’t you?

The longer he looked at the cat, the more conflicted he was as to whether or not the voice that he’d begun hearing at the cemetery might have actually belonged to the smoke-grey feline or, as he was more inclined to believe at the moment, it was all a hallucination driven by sleeplessness, emotion, and too much hooch. Why he was so ready to dismiss one possibility over the other, though, was easy enough to fathom – it had been a long day and, especially where work was concerned, a damned unproductive one… he just didn’t have the time, at the moment, to believe that a stray cat he’d picked up in a graveyard could’ve been anymore than just that. Besides, he mused, pressing the heels of his hands into his eye-sockets, what self-respecting bast would associate with a Wicce who’d always gone out of his way to avoid the Craft until his life went to absolute crap, anyway? An exasperated sigh escaped him then. “Wish you were here, Em,” he murmured, “and could tell me what to think…”

RING!

The ringing of the telephone at that precise moment caused the private investigator to flinch a bit. His hands fell away from his eyes and he glanced curiously at the cat – still amusing herself with the chaotic spread of mail, case files, and miscellaneous papers atop the desk – before reaching for the receiver.

“Bonsoir, Alexander,” a velvet-smooth voice said even before Alex had the phone to fully his ear.

“Lucius,” Alex replied, pretending that he wasn’t surprised to hear the aristocratic patois issuing from the handset, “It’s been a while.”

“Has it?”

“Coupla years, anyway,” Alex confirmed as he pinned the phone between his shoulder and ear, freeing his hands to retrieve his pen from the cat’s grip and shoo her off the desk before she made a bigger mess of the already untidy desktop.

“Hmm,” Lucius droned as the cat, having had her fun interrupted, plopped off the desk and into Alex’s lap, “I suppose it has, then. Although, it seems to me that it was just yesterday. The blink of an eye, as it were.”

“I guess it would,” Alex smirked, wondering whether all Vampyres had such a foreshortened perception of time or if that was a trait that only those as old as Lucius had acquired, “What can I do for you?”

The cat turned a couple of circles, kneaded his thigh, and situated herself comfortably across Alex’s legs. He hadn’t realized that – after he’d secured the pen and pulled a nearly blank piece of paper closer to him in order to take notes on the call if necessary – his free hand had dropped to stroke the now dry fur of the animal until her purring grew slightly louder.

“Actually, mon ami,” the voice on the other end chuckled cryptically, “it is that which I might be able to do for you that has precipitated this communiqué.”

Alex spiked a brow and, intrigued, leaned forward a bit. His hand had stopped stroking the cat, too, but still rested on the soft fur of her back. “Yeah?”

“Quite,” Lucius affirmed, “I believe, Alexander, that I may have recently had the distinct displeasure of happening across one of those dreadful Azazelites whom you so fervently seek.”

Alex already had the pen point to the paper in anticipation… “Where? When?” … He didn’t realize that he was impatiently stippling one corner of the page as he awaited the answers, though, until Lucius’ throaty laughter spilled through the receiver.

“Mon dieu, Alexander,” the Vampyre sniggered, “If I didn’t think more of you, I might be inclined to accuse you of actually drooling.”

“Good thing you have such a high opinion, then,” Alex retorted, forcibly putting an end to the tap-tap-tapping by lifting the hand to his mouth and dragging it, somewhat apprehensively across his lips… no drool. “Now, if you don’t mind, spill it. Where’d you run into this one?”

“Oh, some pretentious little venue on the edge of Lincoln Park,” Lucius sighed, “Vain, I think it was called… or perhaps it was Conceit… Something similarly as hollow, nonetheless. You’ll find it on Clybourne, either way.”

“Good,” Alex nodded, quickly scribbling some notes on the paper, “got a description for me?”

“Mmm, I do. Very tall, very blonde, very pretty, and, as such, very, very confident. At first glance, which is how I noticed him, a very attractive and alluring. I had originally thought to feed on him a bit, of course, but, the closer I got to him, the more obviously tainted his essence was and, you know, Alexander, how tainted essence so turns my stomach…”

“Mmhm,” Alex said, “mine too. Tall, blonde, and pretty doesn’t really give me much, Lucius. That typically describes half the clientele of places like that. Got anything else?”

“Must you ask for the obvious? As I mentioned, monsieur, this one is distinctly identifiable as an Azazelite to those who know what to look for… a penchant for ornate jewelry, the promising smile, the haughty attitude… you’ll know him when you see him, I’m sure. You may even recognize him yourself. He was after all, one of the ones that lingered longer than the rest that night.”

In the midst of scribbling out notes on Lucius’ description of the man the pen snapped in two in Alex’s hand. That last comment by the Vampyre on the other end of the line had sent a surge of both anger and excitement through the private eye and, before he could stop it, it manifested itself in enough physical pressure to have broken the pen. Of all the Azazelites upon whom Alex had exacted some retribution in these last years, only one of them bore a face that he actually recalled. There had been four of them left when he had arrived at the scene of the massacre and he’d managed to shoot one of them before they overpowered him and began their torture and taunting… none of those four had been there when he awoke, Lucius standing over him… he’d found one of them six months later and paid him back three-fold… “You’re sure?”

“Would I have rang you otherwise?”

“No,” Alex muttered apologetically as he tossed the pen into the wastebasket and wiped a small spattering of ink from his fingers onto his jeans, “I don’t guess you would. And he’s a regular at this place, you think?”

“Quite the regular,” Lucius answered, “in fact, he’s taken to reserving the VIP lounge on Friday nights for his little soirees of late. His guests usually arrive before he does, of course. He’s fond of a grand entrance and like to keep up the fashionably late bit… a rather tired routine, if you ask me, but then I’ve had centuries of seeing it. I suppose it can still be considered charming by you mortals. Anyway, mon ami, you’ll certainly find him there after nine in the evening.”

“Thanks, Lucius,” Alex nodded, leaning back in the chair and scooping the cat from his lap, “I owe you one.”

“No, Alexander,” the Vampyre laughed, “I believe this one makes us even. Do take care, my friend; he’s a much bigger fish than he was three years ago. Not as Gifted as yourself or your dear Emily, I’m sure, but enough so that he could give you a bit of a challenge if you’re not prepared.”

“Appreciate the concern,” Alex said, cradling the cat under one arm as he rose from the chair, “good night, Lucius.”

“Bonne nuit, Alex.”

The line went silent and Alex hung up the phone. “Happy anniversary, baby,” Alex murmured under his breath, still cradling the cat in his arms as he headed for the stairs, “found another one.”

He set the cat down as he reached the staircase that climbed to the second floor of the place and offered her a smile. “Not exactly what I’d had planned for the night, kitty cat,” he smiled faintly, a hint of both excitement and possibly maliciousness coloring the expression, “but, with these sons-of-bitches, I’ve learned it’s best to take ‘em as they come.

You go ahead and hang out here, if you want,” he continued, stooping a bit to pat the cat’s head, “I’ve gotta go out for a while.”

With that, Alex bounded up the steps to change into some dry clothes and, since he had a few hours before Lucius’ Azazelite was due at the club, to perform a ritual that would allow him to summon and store a bit of additional Essence.
