Topic: What Evil Hides in the Hearts of Men...
Subject: From stone to earth

The shambling gait of the abominations that the party faced had gone a good way in deceiving Jarenion where the gibbering ghoul was concerned and, as the fang-mawed creature closed ground with a speed the mage was unprepared for, he opted to target the creatures farther out rather than risk En’Aranthea and the other warriors being caught by his spell…

This is a foul omen for Crandel, I imagine, he thought as his hailstones fell with decent effect upon the shamblers, I do hope that these are not the citizens of that village... but this doesn’t bode well.

…His violet eyes flicked back to the warriors, then, and noticed, as Galardil was turning what remained of the first group of undead, that Ta’Arms was statue-still and Rae had positioned herself defensively near the barbarian…

No… this bodes not at all well.

… One of the mage’s slender hands dipped into his satchel, again, and, this time, came out with a small, clay-wrought hand as more shamblers emerged from the mist on either side of the road. His fingers now closed around the little clay hand, Jarenion began another incantation even as he moved a bit closer to where Ta’Arms was currently held fast, and, when the terrible tittering sounded from the forest to the party’s left, he made his decision as to where this particular spell should be directed. The arcane chant rumbled in his chest much as a tremor might rumble in the earth and, upon it’s completion, Jarenion pointed at a spot on the left-hand side of the road some distance between where the barbarian stood motionless and the track’s edge.

((Assuming, here, that the spell doesn’t fail outright and the earthen arm appears… ))

“Mind yourselves near that earthen arm, melloneamin,” he cautioned the others as his mind began selecting yet another spell, “should I be unable to pay it heed, it may not easily distinguish friend from foe!”

((OOC: Okay… just a bit of fluff and RP, here. As noted, J will position himself closer to Ta’arms and cast Max’s Earthen grasp in hopes it will provide some bit of defense for our frozen compatriot. Thereafter, tactics are much the same as described in the Q&A but somewhat reversed in this case, let’s try a volley or two of magic missilefirst (against the shamblers) and when/if our next giggler appears and makes itself a viable target we’ll ramp up spell-power and hit it with something with a bit more oomph.))

...no harm in asking, at all.

Defensive perimeter is also a good idea since it doesn't appear we'll be able to move (much) until we manage to unstiffen the stiff. I'm just wondering if we're not going to have to take on an entire village-worth of shamblers before we get to Crandel.

She'll just throw El Jumbo over her shoulder and carry him to Crandel... cuz she's AWESOME like that!

Jarenion's got a spell(Maximilian's Earthen Grasp) that, hopefully, will provide some defense for Ta'Arms in the immediate future... you know, just in case a fireman's carry isn't an option right away. I'm adjusting spells and tactics, now... should have a postable something in the next little while.

...but I was feeling like crap and didn't get on the 'puter much at all except to take care of work stuff.

All that aside, I'm re-reading, reviewing spells and tactics, and, with luck, posting before today ends.

Also - Yay for us kicking undead butt! I was just a tiny bit worried when Olan threw zombies at as right away... him and zombies... deadly combination... makes it really easy to lose 5 or 6 PCs before you make it seven blocks...

Also Jr. - the undead are emerging from both sides of the road, now... does that mean that the actual area of the road ahead and behind are "clear" of shamblers (at least at the moment)?

Nyx offered a fractional nod and the slight arching of one black brow in response to the white sage’s toast and, before much more came of that brief interaction, found his gaze drawn back to the floor space in front of the minstrels where a number of the patrons were dancing…

If one could call that dancing, I suppose.

…and, just as he found himself remembering Amcaria… and how very long ago it was that I laughably tried to ‘save’ her … the man across the table ceased his bewildered blinking and found his voice.

“I’ve been called worse,” the auburn haired man was saying, at last, in response to the earlier prodding, “Urûkmelaar warlanadhrîm comes to mind…”

This evoked a genuine chuckle from the Twilight Elf and prompted him to reach for his wine, once more.

“…Or something to that effect.”

“Indeed,” Nyx smirked as Finn sighed and tended to the packing of a pipe.

“I certainly don’t want you remembering my true name in the morning after this sodding introduction,” the man continued in the wake of the elf’s silence, “But why Should you care slope-ear? Don’t we monkey-faces just all look the same?"

The hiss and spark of the tindertwig coincided with the enigmatic smile and shrug that was the Mith’ganni’s initial reply…

“Besides friend, names have power.”

…and the flare of the flame as that twig was set to the bowl of Finn’s pipe illuminated what the elf said next.

“Indeed they do, warlanadhrîm,” Nyx nodded, smiling from his shadows as the flame’s light played in his yellow eyes, “Some more than others, I might think... Speak one, under the proper circumstances, and you gain simple control of he who bears the name… speak another and you call forth death for… whoever… yes?”

The Twilighter’s smile lingered throughout the course of events that filled the next moments… Finn’s inhalation of the herbal concoction, the man’s silent and slightly troubled trek through his thoughts, and the subtle but still telling touch he gave the mapcase… and, though hidden behind the rim of the goblet he had lifted to his lips, once more, that smile remained when Finn offered a wicked grin of his own and returned his gaze to Nyx.

“Ever hear of the Moonshore Caldera Master Pointy-ear?”

“Hmm,” Nyx purred, “Now, there is a name with some power,” He leaned forward, placing his goblet back on the table. “Though, simply speaking it does very little beyond whipping men into a frenzy, does it? Sets them scurrying about like a bunch of frightened rabbits in search of a secret security whilst their squeals of excitement nigh on guarantee that that security will come at a great cost to more than one, yes?”

Cay’s divinations had been correct, it seemed, in pointing this place out – though it had been a long time since the scryings the Wharf Witch shared with him had been anything other – and Nyx was anxious, now, to verify that the rest of what she had told him.

“Yes… I have heard of the Moonshore Caldera,” he grinned, “and I have heard, also, of the trouble it might have brought you of late… Finn Mac Cuel…”

Reclined in the shadows’ embrace, with the soothing warmth of the whiskey now radiating from his belly, Nyx took advantage of his table-mate’s hesitation and, once again, allowed his gaze to wander the room.

I wonder, he thought cynically to himself, his moon-colored eyes tracking to the barbarian, first, why I bother with places like this… Always the same… Too much drink in some… too much lust in others… too little of anything in, still, others… heh-heh-heh…

The large round-ear’s presence had apparently chased one of the young women from her table to the bar but, Nyx noted, before his scrutiny moved along, the barbarian had gained a handful each of the other two… Oddly well-mannered and well-spoken for his ilk, the mith’ganni couldn’t help but observe before setting his sights on the scowling, dark-haired maiden who had abandoned her friends to the brute’s charms, Was it that curious fact or simply a general aversion that chased you off, I wonder… You seem more… aware… than your friends, yes?

Nyx reached for his own goblet as the glowering girl… her friends called her Miranda… ordered her tankard refilled with Mahogany… and, unlike her friends, she wants more than can be found in a night at the tavern… He indulged in a contemplative sip as the girl engaged the resident barflies, Stadtler and Waldorf, in a bit of light-hearted conversation, and smiled faintly around the rim of his goblet as the two old men flung barbs at one another before one of them made quite the display of leading Miranda onto the floor for a dance… She bears watching, the mith’ganni told himself, watching the way she moved – light and graceful – before letting his eyes move on, once more, Potential, there, I think, yes? And, should her boredom become too much, perhaps, there are other things with which her time could be filled…

The white-shrouded sage was next… He’d not moved much since he had entered, and had spoken even less. In fact, other than the brow the old man had lifted when he’d first caught sight of Nyx, there had been very little out of the man, at all, save for what seemed to be a quiet nursing of the mead he’d ordered and, like Nyx, occasional perusal of the tavern’s other patrons.

Nothing to worry on from you, tonight, then, eh, magician, the assassin mentally noted, keeping the curious man still framed in his vision, or might it be druid? Something about you says ‘nature’ somehow, yes?..

…and speaking of nature…

The Mith’ganni’s attentions flitted over the remaining clientele and returned to the man across the table from him. “Since it appears you might be sitting there for a time,” Nyx said, extricating himself from the penumbra enough to return his goblet to the table, “why do you not tell me your name… unless, of course, you prefer to continue to be addressed as monkey-face… and, perhaps, why your friends were so eager to leave you here, hm?”

((OOC: Mostly just fluff and fodder cuz I was bored and felt like writing a little. ))

Subject: LOL

Tyr works...

Also... naming characters can be an exercise in brain-twisting, sometimes. Gods know I've been stuck more than once. Some things I've found helpful where that's concerned:

  • Random Name Generators (found all over the interwebz, in RPG characters generators like PCGen, etc... May not always give you a name you really like but they do come in handy for inspiration, etc)
  • BOOKS (of all sorts... sometimes you need to open them up and read them, other times you can pull a pretty cool name (or the impetus for one, anyway) right off the cover or spine.)
  • TV/Movies (again, may not always want to pull an entire name from a well known movie/show but, I find, that there's a plethora of interectingly named characters out there for inspiration)
  • People you know (always fun to name a character after that kid that bullied you in school and kill them off horribly in some dungeon crawl, isn't it?)

Anyhoo... Just food for thought. Use it or ignore it as you see fit.

Topic: The Bleeding Lute - Come on in and Play!
Subject: Of a spinning room and elvish gloom

“Oi! Watch where you’re stumbling you Big Clumsy,…”

“That makes me one ahead, you round-eared rabbit-pacher.”

As quickly as Finn’s head spun back around, Nyx couldn’t help but grin and think that, had the man’s head been twisted involuntarily in such a manner, surely his neck would have snapped. The expression of disbelief which painted itself on that monkey face, too, might have accompanied an unexpected neck-breaking – he’d severed more than one thread in just such a manner and had left that same wide-eyed and dumbstruck look on many a dead face – and, when the disheveled man wobbled a bit in his seat, the Mith’ganni wondered if, in fact, he had just done himself in…

Just lovely, Nyx mused, his head tilting curiously to one side as he relaxed into the shadows of his corner and watched the man, I’ll get the blame for this, certainly. The Innkeep would never believe that ‘twas his whiskey did this.

…Finn seemed to find a modicum of equilibrium, though, after sucking in a particularly deep breath and Nyx offered a mildly acerbic smile, expecting the breeder’s game to continue.

“Fine,” the man grumbled, then, fishing into a pouch and coming out with a coin which he tossed on the table, “You win.”

“So soon?” The Mith’ganni clucked his tongue in disappointment as the human tried to stand too quickly and found himself, just as quickly, pulled back into the chair he was trying to vacate. “Your old gran has not yet graced us with an appearance.”

“Ugh,” the auburn-haired man puffed.

Whatever bluster had been in Finn, before, seemed to have been fully expelled on that breath and, despite feeling the need to make some comment about how round-ears were so inclined to giving up even though the gods had cursed them with short enough lives, Nyx simply held his tongue and reached for his goblet. He indulged in a sip of the wine, then, watching as his table mate turned in his chair to cast a glance at the door and a disheartened sigh into the air.

“Well,” the human murmured as if to himself or no one, “I guess that’s that…”

“Abandoned by your so-called friends,” the mith’ganni chuckled darkly, “and left in the shadow with a stranger. That seems always to be the way of things, yes?”

Finn turned back, then, and blinked a couple of times.

“Most of your friends departed some time ago,” Nyx informed him flatly, “save for the… how do you round-ears say?... gnome?

The gnome, yes? He lingered for a bit in that one’s shadow,” the mith’ganni’s yellow eyes flicked in the direction of the barbarian who had previously jostled Finn and was, now, doing his best to woo one of the three girls at the table adjacent to the one so recently abandoned by the man’s friends, “and, were I to guess at the conversation, I’d wager that your friend filled that large fellow’s head with all sorts of unsavory bits where you might be concerned.”

Nyx’s gaze travelled that circuit around the room, again, taking particular notice of the position and posture of the barbarian, the white-robed sage, and the lanky red-headed half-breed whom he knew to be The Lute’s equivalent of a bouncer. “If you made the door, at all,” he continued, his eyes having completed their cursory patrol and come to rest on Finn, once more, “you’d not make it far past in your current state, yes?”

He returned his goblet to the table, then, and, at the same time, nudged what remained of the mushroom stew toward the Finn in an unspoken suggestion that he should eat something.

“And even if you did escape without somehow staggering into the giant, there, and thus provoking him into beating you to death, I’d wager twice as much coin to say that your smarmy little nogoth has more unpleasant surprises awaiting you beyond the walls of this place…” The ghost of a smile played on the elf’s lips, then, and, sinking back into the deeper shadows, again, he added; “…Not that I should care, of course.”

Drasnia, in this case, though, is a vast, port city as opposed to the country depicted in those books.

I imagine 'Cap'n Lou' probably named the city after reading them, though.

P.S. So far so good with the barbarian, Astrid... if you're going for "Conan" though, you might wanna go a little more "gruff and growly."... you've got a good start on it.

...I have a soft spot in my black little heart for the guy, myself.

I'm getting a "Gandalf the White" kind of visual/vibe where your character is concerned, btw... I'm guessing that's not too far off?

Also, as a little RP fodder for the rest of you where Nyx is concerned... There, of course, is more than one moniker attached to moon-eyed Mith'ganni and, dependent on how widely travelled your characters might be and/or what they "might have heard," (or dependent on what less than savory circles they might rotate through) you may recognize him as any of the following:
  • The Last of the Jolbanie or The Kinslayer (if you happen to have passed thru Shanurdir and/or had any dealings with Twilighters from that area).
  • The Devil of Labaram
  • The Edge of Prien's Axe
  • The Shyndyn
  • The Assassin Prince of Drasnia
  • Etellenya's Emissary or The Wharf Witch's Pet (if you visited seedier parts of Drasnia following the events of Fates, in which Nyx "usurps leadership" of the Hellkite Syndicate there and hands it over to his love Cayrimsa)
  • The Steppe Son (if you've ever met a certain elven seamstress in Drasnia that goes by "Dreamweaver")

Anyhoo... up to you how much you may know or have heard if you determine that your character has some knowledge of and/or recognizes the mith'ganni, somehow. If you want/need any other fodder to roll with that kind of thing, feel free to PM me.

Names of countries and such (my Mith'ganni hail from a region called Shanurdir, for instance)... have detailed notes on the remaining clans, etc, scrawled out and saved, blah, blah, blah.
