...fishing line works in a pinch as far as sutures go... (used fishing line and an upholstery needle to stitch up a boo-boo I once had and it held pretty well, anyway. The scar's not exactly pretty but it did work)...
Anyhoo... even a rinky-dink neighborhood hardware store should have a roll or three of fishing line wouldn't ya think?

Another added benefit of whole grains - according to the commercials I've seen lately, anyway - is that they make your backside look really good in last year's jeans.

Topic: Zombies in Chicago Q&A Subject: LOL @ dradels...
I think you mean dowels, mal.
Also, I think we're set with a wheelbarrow or garden cart type thing in order to move our unconscious friend... only need one person to move a body in a wheelbarrow... need two to carry a stretcher.
Aaaand, I've been informed that Emily recommends treating Mac's injury before he gets moved, at all, so, given the medical expertise, it looks as if the plan is:
1) Emily treats Mac while the rest of us stand guard and/or pilfer the hardware store for any other items we might want/need there.
2) When Mac is stitched up and everyone else's boo-boos are addressed, we load Mac up and move across the street to get some grub
3) If we don't get munched before, during, or immediately after items 1 and 2, we form up and make for the harbor.
Plan?

Rolls a balance check in order to avoid tripping and falling on his face... You guys really should close the curtains!

Topic: Zombies in Chicago Q&A Subject: Not taken that way...
...at all.
The arguments make sense... Murph would agree and is likely glad to have Teddy there to "double check him" on things like that... He's a mechanic, for the luv o Pete, not a platoon leader.
... staying together per Grugg's input makes better sense... safety in numbers and all that...
Food is good... food is close... let's get food and then go yachting.
Also... good question Meri... my initial thoughts on the party split were to "save time" and "keep from moving the wounded right away"... if we wait for Mac to get stitched up the save time bit is out the window...

I hate (love) it when he does that!
Re: Father Ted... that's kind of where I was going with Murph's last bit, I guess... the dude looked really familiar but, right off the bat, Murph couldn't quite place the face. Had imagined that, at some point after introductions were made, the mechanic would get this look of realization and go... "You're that TV preacher, aren't you?"... or something along those lines, anyway.

Topic: Zombies in Chicago Q&A Subject: Well, let's see...
Emily and Mac can't go but Mac's .357 is available and has 3 rounds left in it, I think?
Alaster and Murph both have shotguns.
Amber's got a hatchet and a satchel full of comfortably numb.
Father Teddy's got Jesus and an elephant gun.
Kramer ditched us cuz we almost got eaten.
Jake's likely out eating someone else.
So, what... Murph and Alaster go grocery shopping, Reverend Artillery and Amber (armed with Mac's .357) stand guard while Emily tends to Mac... or, do we just send one person all the way to the Treasure Island and have another shotgun on hand at the hardware store?

*rumblerumble*
I hate to do the "split the party" thing but what's the general consensus on sending a couple of people over to the grocery for food whilst Emily doctors Mac (and herself)... we'll need someone standing guard over them, of course...
Shopping gets done... Medical business gets taken care of... a little "rest" of sorts... by the time the food patrol returns, Mac might be ready to be loaded up and we can scoot.

Topic: Zombies in Chicago Q&A Subject: Nearest boat...
...will likely be found in Belmont Harbor, I believe. About a block or two east of our present position.
Not sure if the zombies can swim but Murph's figuring they can't run across the waters of Lake Michigan, so a boat is the most logical "safe place" he can think of right now. No one has strongly objected so I think we're pretty solid on the idea.

Topic: Zombies in Chicago Q&A Subject: Um...
..."the wounded" is a general term meaning "everyone with injuries" so, yeah, that would include Emily.
Now, that said, aside from pain killers and such, there's not a whole lot that can be done about cracked and broken ribs other than to let them heal... wrapping them (especially tightly) is not a good idea (trust me... been there...)... and especially when the patient also has pneumonia... don't wanna compress those lungs, you know?
Em's gonna be hurtin' for certain, I'm sure... but, if we managed to get enough stuff at the pharm, she should be able to make it more tolerable.

"Report… How we doin'?"
"Two ribs here, Murph," Emily winced as she got to her feet and tested the area, "feels like they're broken."
“I got… Mac bandaged up… its only temporary though, he’ll need further care,” Amber’s eyes went nervously from Emily back to Murph, “he’s unconscious.”
He didn’t need to voice the expletive that came to mind when he heard that news, it showed on his face.
“Sexy move there, Tom…” Amber’s voice was a small measure steadier, a bit softer, and she managed a weak smile as she passed him a water bottle. The tips of her fingers brushed briefly against his and he accepted the bottle and the fleeting touch with equal gratitude.
“I have my moments,” he murmured in reply before swigging down a mouthful of the lukewarm water. He offered a faint and somewhat fatigued grin; “You’d really go crazy if you saw me with the stomach flu.”
~*~*~*~*~
Murph listened, nodding and pondering as the others updated him on their situations… Emily, now, with cracked or broken ribs on top of her pneumonia… Mac chopped and likely to bleed out despite Amber’s trained efforts if more advanced procedures weren’t applied… Alaster, again, with the strange need to apologize for everything that happened like it was somehow all his fault that the world up and ended… He’d heard Kramer mutter something about running a second ago, too, but now, as he consciously sought out the man for any input he might have, Murph discovered that the guy was gone…
Guess that was to be expected, he thought as his eyes swept the aisles in search of where the man could have gone, we didn’t have much choice in the matter but we didn’t run… probably figured we’re more trouble than we’re worth… Too bad… coulda used him…
~*~*~*~*~
“My children,” Reverend Artillery’s voice called Murph’s attentions back from his scouring of the hardware store’s shadows and his contemplating on what to do next, “God truly lays a magnificent gift before me in this time of need. He has told me of your struggle, and I am here to ease your burden. If you would have me enter, I would very much like to make your acquaintances.”
That voice sounds kinda familiar, he thought, turning his gaze to the front of the store and framing the stocky frame of the man who approached. He squinted, trying to make out the man’s features and try and place where he’d seen the man before but couldn’t come up with it… TV maybe? Sounds right… but where from… news?
“Eloquent speaker at least,” he heard Amber murmur, then, and, like she had with Steve Kramer, the woman played the role the group’s PR consultant and called out to the approaching preacher; “So long as you promise you won’t eat us you’re welcome to enter. Otherwise we’ll have to smash you into a bloody pulp before you get your dinner.”
Murph couldn’t help but snicker at that a bit and it seemed, too, that the quip had caught Reverend Artillery off guard for a moment. When Murph’s eyes flicked back to the man, had paused and seemed to puzzle over Amber’s response for a second before regaining his stride and calling back with another bible verse.
"The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy,” Reverend Artillery smiled as he strode towards them, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
I know I’ve heard that voice, Murph thought as the older man stomped across the sidewalk, seen that face… channel surfin’ late at night, maybe?
“Well, in that case, come on in, Reverend,” the mechanic finally addressed the man with the elephant gun, “cuz all we’ve had an abundance of lately is hell and heartache…”
He shouldered his shotgun and extended a hand when the Reverend was close enough to accept it. “Tom Murphy,” he said by way of introduction…
((OOC: Just to keep it short, I’ll stop there… and we can assume that proper introductions are made, Reverend Artillery is “brought up to speed” on the group’s circumstances up to this point, aaaaand if there are no other objections we proceed to rolling out from the hardware store per discussion in the QA))

Topic: Zombies in Chicago Q&A Subject: Agreed...
...I think prioritizing medical treatment is how Murph would be inclined, as well. Even jostling around unconscious in a wheelbarrow is likely to make Mac's wound worse and up the chances of him bleeding out. Also, sitting still (i.e. not walking or running) might be a good thing for Emily... she'll be moving more than she likes soon enough, I'm sure.
Sooo... my thoughts are, find a secure spot here in the store to tend the wounded... one or more of us can gather a wheelbarrow and/or any secondary supplies we might think of while the stitching is going on. Once Mac's stitched and loaded and everybody's ready I'm thinking we roll out for the harbor per my earlier QA post... "hopefully" a safe haven out on the water, fairly easily defensible, wounded can recoup without too much worry, others can run "side missions" in the meantime.. *shrug*
My 2 cents, anyway.
