...the whole situation is kinda gloom and doom, dude!

Heavy on the doom!

Remember what I said about Murph getting less annoyed with and more concerned for Alaster? Well, I think concern has gone to out and out worry about the boy's sanity.

Read the last paragraph or two of Murph's last post for a bit more detail as to what his thoughts are, anyway... the rest is pretty much fluff but, I kinda gotta recommend reading even the fluffiest of fluff when you get time... might pick some tidbits that'll keep ya from gettin' munched... or shot...

Lot's of soft tosses and such to be found throughout, though, I think, and plenty of room to take things off in any number of directions...

Enjoy.

“Don't any of you think it...”

Murph paused at the sound of Alaster’s voice, raised in protest, behind him. Jesus, that boy’s gonna lose his mind before we make it another block… I wonder what the hell happened in his life that’s made him so… well… emo? The mechanic stifled a sigh as he turned to look back, making use of the hesitation to reload the SLP, let his eyes drift over the rest of them – Jake… Amber… Mac… Emily – before settling on the ranting Alaster.

I am not going to leave him behind to rot with the rest of them. Now get your head in gear. If he does start to show any signs or if he starts looking weary and tired then I'll carry him if that’s what it takes but I’m not going to take the life of a human and have it on my conscience. I already killed two today. Let's go.”

Murph frowned a little… thought about lighting one of the few smokes he had remaining… licked his lips instead and had opened his mouth to say something to the carpenter but…

“No one said anything about leaving him,” Amber said before Murph could sort his own words out…

One corner of his mouth flicked away half of Murph’s frown. Good girl, he thought, glad to see that Amber wasn’t letting herself fade away into her own dark thoughts, You keep that determination, sweetheart, and we’ll make that Chuck E Cheese date with the kids, yet…

“…We are going,” she continued, matter-of-factly, “To the drugstore. Get some penicillin for Emily and some bandages for Jake… some food and supplies for the rest of us.”

“Augmentin,” Emily corrected then, causing the other corner of Tommy Murphy’s mouth to tick upwards a fraction, “I think that I may have pneumonia. Penicillin will help if it's streptococcus based, but not if it's homophilus. Augmentin will kill them both.”

Ain’t that somethin’? Murph thought, blinking at the youngest and, at a glance, most vulnerable of the tiny group, The girls got their heads on straighter than the guys.

“I'm studying to be a doctor,” Emily shrugged after a moment, “These kinds of facts stick with you.”

When she was finished, Murph shook his head and chuckled a little, then let his gaze drift away from her and fix on Jake for a moment, offering the man a nod and a look that said he was on-board with the words Amber and Emily had just spoken… Don’t sweat it, Hammo, his hazel eyes flashed as Jake’s met them, We’ll make sure you’re taken care of...

He paused on Amber for a moment, then, offering the woman a confident wink and as much of a smile as he could muster.

Then he looked back towards Alaster and raised a brow; “That all right with you, Al?”

((OOC: Assuming a ‘yes’ of some sort… I’d imagine the expression on Murph’s face doesn’t leave much doubt that anything negative would be acceptable… ))

“Good,” Murph nodded, “glad we’re on the same page…

…You did good, by the way,” he added, before letting go of Alaster’s gaze and skimming the faces of the rest of the party, “All of you did… I know it wasn’t easy… and I can tell you, now, that it ain’t likely to get any easier… but if we’re gonna get through this, we have to do what we have to do and, when it’s done, we can’t let ourselves think about it too much.”

“We keep movin’, though… keep doin’ what needs done… and we’ll get out of this… find ourselves with plenty of time to think Until then, do what it takes to keep your mind off of it…” He cradled the shotgun then, coming up with something that he figured might just do that for the younger man… Murph studied Alaster for a long moment, then with a faint, sideways nod eastward towards their destination; “You wanna take point for a while? Give you a chance to think about somethin’ else?”

((OOC: Up to Alaster, there… if the guy wants to take point and give himself something else to think about for a minute, Murph will let him and play rear-guard himself… if not, Murph’ll keep the point position… Not that it matters much, anyway, because…))

*****

Other than nerves being strung on a razor’s edge, reacting (or maybe even over reacting) to every sound and shadow, and silently chewing on thoughts that would be poison if swallowed, the hike up the last stretch of Cornelia from Halsted had been uneventful. Things had actually looked a little bit better than Murph might have expected along that last block…

The calm before the storm, Sarge…

…Which is why he should have been expecting the gruesome vista of pandemonium that greeted his eyes when they, at last, reached Broadway. Burned buildings, wrecked vehicles, mangled and putrefying bodies strung from hell to breakfast…

Holy Mary, Mother of God…

…Even the sight of the pharmacy and the hardware store (with their shop fronts intact and their now somewhat disturbing semblance of normalcy in the midst of this madness) couldn’t scour the mask of awe and disbelief off of Tommy Murphy’s face as he gawked at the devastation they had walked into...

…What the hell is goin’ on?! What the hell happened out here?! There’s not gonna be an end to this, is there?

…His wide-eyed gaze swung passed the Treasure Island Foods that he had forgotten about when he first decided this route would be best given the group’s needs and circumstances. His stomach grumbled at the thought of real food, too, but even that couldn’t alleviate the numbness brought on by this amount of carnage. That only happened when Murph’s searching eyes found Amber standing not too far away… Still need to get her to Joshua… then Jake and Mac… need to get Jake’s wound cleaned up… hope Mac’s keeping a close eye on the kid… and Emily… Augmentin… and then Alaster …Coffee… maybe a nap… and some encouragement…

Murph swallowed the knot in his throat, squared his shoulders, and, trying to ignore the worst of the chaos surrounding them, flicked appraising glances at each of the three stores. The pharmacy was priority one considering Emily and, now, Jake’s respective conditions; the hardware store was next, as useful tools, makeshift weapons, and possibly some sturdier clothing items might be looted from there; and the grocery would have to be last, regardless of how desperately hungry they might have been – broken windows meant that anything could get in and out of the place at will, anyway, and, as good as a twinkie or even an uncooked can of condensed soup sounded, neither one of those things was worth dying for at the moment…

What do you do when you’re all rested and resupplied, then?

We make for Wrigley… or maybe the Harbor… or we go after Joshua… whichever is closest.

What about after that?

I don’t know… we get out…

To where? What if it’s like this everywhere?

Murph shook himself loose of the internal chatter, blowing a heavy breath across his lips, found himself looking at Amber again…

Then we go somewhere where it ain’t like this! Where there ain’t any people to be zombies…

You said the z-word!

…Shut the f*** up, would ya?

“All right,” Murph said, trying to muster up the confidence and determination he had leveled at them before Halsted, “We made it this far. I told you, people, you were the baddest in the valley…” He pointed at the Save Rite with the shotgun… “there’s our number one objective… medicine, first aid supplies, whatever we can use…” the FNs barrel panned right and stopped on the Ace Hardware… “number two; axes, machetes, boots, tools, same deal”… the shotgun nor Murph’s eyes indicated the grocery store but he did tip his head back a fraction to acknowledge it’s presence… “we worry about food after we get the rest out of the way.

We’ve got a couple of hours before sunset,” he said, already moving towards the pharmacy, a hand falling to rest at the small of Amber's back to usher her on as he moved by her, “let’s get a move on.”

((OOC: Assuming no objections or major shifts to the above, I say we get to the pharmacy, check to make sure that we’re clear, and then get ourselves inside… worry about what next once we’ve gotten that far… Edits and backposts as needed of course.))

...Never will I be welcome amongst the heartless
Monsters you surround yourself with

Feeding off the pain and misfortune of others
A maniacal breed of sub-human parasites
Thrown into a feeding frenzy with the smell
Of fresh blood

Open your eyes and see the creatures
For what they are

A swirling mass of hatred and envy
Don't be naive enough to think you're unaffected
The conversion has already begun...

Hate to say it, Mal, but you might wanna make another little edit or two... It doesn't appear that Jake actually heaved and fell down, so Alaster probably couldn't have helped him up as posted... and also, Jake doesn't have a gun so there's no point in Alaster's last bit about telling someone to take it.

Not to pick nits or nothin' you know?... Just sayin...

Murph didn't react to that because, honestly, you hadn't posted when I was finishing mine up and, when I saw Mac's post I was already done with Murph's.

Also, for the record, Murph poured the whiskey ON Jake's neck wound, not into his mouth. Disinfectant, you know?

Topic: Zombies in Chicago
Subject: Don't say zombie... Don't say zombie...

“Son of a…” Murph was a little surprised when the shrieking creature all but ignored the first blast from the combat shotgun – it staggered a little, sure, but nothing like it should have if it had been human – and despite the damage that the buckshot should have done, it kept on running straight for them with no notable slowdown to its step…

Can I say “zombie” now?

Don’t even! Zombies ain’t real… this is something… else… it’s gotta be.

The sounds from behind him and the fleeting glimpses of movement in his peripheral vision begged for Murph to turn and see what was happening with the others and help them as best he could but, since the… Zombie?thing coming at them from the north end of Halsted had refused to drop, the mechanic couldn’t afford to let it out of his sights just yet.

Directly behind him, Amber let out a little squeal, as he led the still-charging creature with the FN’s barrel… Keep it together, baby, he thought in her direction, afraid that if he spoke the words out loud it would skew his aim… The thing was scrambling over a car, now… launching itself at them…

“God! Tom, kill it!!!”

Baddest in the valley…

Cha-BOOM!!!

Murph’s breath exploded with that second blast and the last of it passed his lips as the body landed on the ground in front of him with a wet crunch… Thank God… He tried not to look at this one too closely… didn’t want to personalize it like he’d let happen with the first one…

The second one’s always easier, isn’t it? Like those whackos in the desert…

It’s never any easier.

You’re gonna want to get past that, Sarge… This is different…

His eyes tore away from the body as he turned to react to the scuffling that had broken out in the ranks behind him… One of them had gotten in… He hadn’t taken this one down fast enough to help with the other three and one of them had gotten in… Murph’s vision squared on the tightly packed group just in time to the end results of Amber’s swing with the crowbar…

…These ain’t people, Murphy…

“It bit him! Oh my god, is he... is he going to turn?”

…Even those so-called insurgents in the sandbox were people…

Murph tried to shake off what was coming next even before it happened. He blinked at Jake as the kid got to his feet and couldn’t help but notice the trickle of blood running from the bite mark on the soccer player’s throat…

…When those people came runnin’ at you, screamin’ and hollerin’, you knew they were crazy but you at least saw some kind of soul in their eyes, didn’t you?...

“What!?” He felt Amber tense… felt all of them tense… and wanted to say something to her because he knew what she was thinking but couldn’t say anything because he was thinking it, too… all of them were… and the very surreal idea that what they were thinking might actually be true had rendered him dumb…

…these things ain’t got no souls in their eyes, Sergeant…

He looked at Amber… then towards the thing she had clobbered with the crowbar… reached out a hand, without realizing he was doing it, to close over hers as it clenched tight around the weapon… and blinked at it once before an obviously shellshocked Alaster took to the thing with a bat…

…these things ain’t human…

“Stupid f****** thing,” he heard Alaster cry from somewhere far away and frighteningly close all at once, as he watched the man bludgeon the fallen creature into a pulp, “I'm tired and I don't want to be bothered by any of you things ever again.”

…Something told Murph he should stop the kid but something bigger told him to just let it go and wouldn’t let him move to do a damn thing to stop the brutality. “Don’t say it,” he muttered under his breath as he closed his eyes and tried to will himself not to think what he was thinking…

…These things are zombies…

Oh, God!

His eyelids opened again and he found himself looking into Amber’s dark, frightened, and questioning pools… and he could hear the question she was begging him to answer… What now?

You know what happens when someone gets bitten in a zombie movie, Murph… you’ve seen enough to know… You know what you gotta do…

“This ain’t a zombie movie,” Murph murmured, offering a scant shake of his head before he let go of Amber’s gaze and turned his own to Jake…

…You know what you gotta do…

…If this was a zombie movie, yes, Murph would’ve known that the best thing right now would be to put Jake down before anything in that bite went any further through the man’s blood and sucked his soul out… and he couldn’t believe that he was thinking that very thing now… it was all he could do to keep from lifting the shotgun as he let go of Amber’s hand and took a few steps towards Jake, eyes hardly ticking away from the bloody bite mark…

…Do it…

“You alright, Hammo?” Murph asked, his hazel eyes flitting from the bite, to the Molotov clutched in one of Jake’s hand, and then to the soccer player’s eyes. “That thing get you too bad?

Why don’t ya lemme… take a look at that…”

((Regardless of answer… oh… taking a few minor liberties with actions here for RP effect only… and am assuming of course that the Molotov is still in tact. If not I’ll edit…))

Murph closed the remaining distance between them and, in the same motion, reached to pluck the Molotov from Jake’s hand. “This might sting a little,” he grimaced, hoping Jake was still too dazed from the tackle to resist, “but you don’t want that infecting.” Almost as quick as he said it, the mechanic had Jake’s head craned back, the wick from the Molotov clenched between his teeth, and was pouring a healthy slosh of the Jack Daniel’s on the other man’s neck wound. He released his hold on Jake, then, and stepped back a few paces to take himself out of the man’s personal space as quickly as he had encroached on it.

He took a slug of the whiskey for himself, then, as he kept an almost apologetic eye on Jake Hammo’s face for another moment. “That’ll do for now,” Murph said after a moment, “but we’re gonna want to look at it closer when we get some place a little safer.”

I ain’t killin’ him… Not yet…

He held the bottle up, then, and his eyes skimmed the other faces in the group. “Anyone else?”

((If any one else wants a drink, Murph will pass the bottle… if not, he’ll put the wick back in and hand it back to Jake.))

“All right, people,” he muttered after a moment, “We’re burning daylight… let’s move…Jake… stay close to me, bud…”

If you do “turn,” I want you close, he thought grimly as he cast an almost doleful look at Amber before trudging on to the east…

Subject: Silly bard! This is a battle not a barn dance!

What madness is this? Flynn wondered as the summoned hobgoblins proved to be of little more use than a momentary distraction… the way the first two of his summoned reinforcements were drawn up into the air and the way the undead priests jerked around like marionettes when they moved, though, cut through the bard’s initial shock at the recent events and set his mind to working. There was something vaguely familiar about all of this…

…something from a tale I once heard, he mused as Kilgim called the party to him, Something about an Elven Princess, a ranger with a magical sword, and a spider demoness…

“I believe I know this tale, ranger,” Flynn said over his shoulder, returning his scimitar to its slings… his eyes went wide when he looked back to see the cleaver flying in his direction and, thankfully, his reflexes were as keen as his vision in that moment and the bard managed to get his fiddle between the blade and his face… He flinched a bit when the kitchen steel thunked against the instrument’s belly – as if the thought of putting an instrument in harms way was somehow equivocal to sin – but made no indication that the fiddle’s sturdiness surprised him... In fact, the instant the cleaver bounced away, Flynn settled the fiddle under his chin as if things like this were an everyday occurrence and finished what he had started to say to Char; “Mind my back for a moment longer, friend, and we’ll see if I can’t reveal what makes these puppets dance, hm?”

The bard’s fingers danced along the violin’s neck and the bow slid and skipped across the strings, evoking an effervescent melody that seemed to visibly spark from the strings and cling to the bow when Flynn whispered a soft, magical lyric over them. When the last word was sung, the song ended abruptly and Flynn thrust out the bow to point at a spot above the disjointed attackers….

((Glitterdust, if you please... hoping to perhaps reveal some strings here… If this works, Maximus is gonna get to play tailor… *snipsnip*… *crosses fingers*))

...if you're playing in Mom's house, I'm afraid I've gotta back Mom up on this one... Let the lil bro play... keep Mom happy and, in so doing, keep mom's house as a place to play in the future.

Heck, who knows, maybe little brother will play for a while, get terribly bored, and decide he's out before you do... On the other hand, maybe little brother will turn out to be a better player than you or your friends expect (wouldn't that be cool?) and, in retrospect, all of this concern will turn out to have been for nothing. And, you know, even if he doesn't turn out to be the best gamer in the world, it's still an opportunity to take the kid under your wing and help him to learn right?

Honestly, I'd be a little more concerned about your "friends" who are so quick to protest the very thought of your bro playing as I would be your brother. Friendships are often fleeting, you know... Family's forever.
