...for that last post:

Sam's not abandoning the negotiations in favor of the girl by any means... If Wyatt says, or even seems to look like, he doesn't want Sam to wander off, he'll certainly return to the table. He will, however, still order the brunette a drink and have it sent over to her as opposed to delivering it himself.

I'm imagining the brunette (Misty Knowles, per a PM from Roger) looks something like this:

Topic: Voyages of Rocinante - Serenity/Firefly RPG
Subject: Potter? Of the Londinum Potters?

Day 1, Whitefall - Necessity, "The Slaughterhouse", 8:40 PM PT

"Eight hun'red plus the drums already on the table an' an additional five hun'red should there be a need t' engage in any kind o' cowboyin'," came Wyatt's counteroffer, "plus the cost o' any munitions spent in yer service. Hazard pay, dohn ma?"

"If ya wanna kick it up to an even thousand, I figger I could see to it as we get there quiet-like." Sam interjected with a faint shrug, "It'd take an extra day but we'd keep off the scanners an' outta the sight o' any pryin' eyes, get me?"

Just about that moment, Potter looked like he'd been kicked in the nethers and, internally, Dash couldn't help but wince right along with him. It seemed the price might be way out of reach from what the sickly looking man might be able to pay and, if that was the case, between them, Wyatt and Sam might have just humped themselves out of a job,

Miss Will probly'd've had this old fart eatin' outta her hand, the pilot thought, imagining that Potter was likely to take his business elsewhere, an' likely woulda come in at a price closer ta what he was hopin', I reckon.

He tipped the glass to his lips, again, in an attempt to mask the vaguely disappointed smirk that had begun to form there, and his eyes ticked back toward the brunette he'd noticed a minute ago. Behind the rim of the glass, Sam's dejected expression got a bit of a nudge in the direction of something more hopeful when, for a second or so, the woman's eyes locked to his for a second and then, somewhat coyly, tore away.

Ni how, bao bei, he mentally purred at the woman, a mildly salacious expression playing at the corners of his mouth as the glass came away. He was about to excuse himself from what he thought would turn out to be failed negotiations and plot his course for negotiations of another sort. Just as he turned his gaze back to Wyatt to get his okay, though, Potter seemed to recover from the shock of their counter-offer and laughs, a ruefully self- depreciating kind of laugh,

"Shall we sit down, gentlemen," he suggested politely, motioning to an emptying table.

Dash wasn't sure whether to be disappointed that the man seemed interested in continuing the negotiations or not. Work was work, of course, but, at the same time, it'd been a spell since he'd had a good grapple, Yeah, he sighed to himself, flicking a doleful glance of his own back at the brunette as he follows Wyatt and Potter to the table, an' it'll be a ruttin' sight longer if'n ya don' get some money in yer pocket, too, Sammy. The fact that he caught her eyes on him again, just then (even if they did quickly flit away), gave him a bit of hope, though, and, as he reached the table and claimed a seat for himself, Sam's smile was a bit more than amicable.

"First off," Saul confessed as the three men settled in their seats, "I am not one of those Potters. Well technically I am but they cut me off and disowned me back when I joined the independence side over the alliance. If I was still in their good graces, I would gladly pay you what you asked,"

Dash's brows raise in momentary confusion at this but, after a moment of picking his brain, realization dawns on him, Big name in the Core, Potter, Major share-holders in Blue Sun, That was about all the pilot could coax from his memories. If he'd heard anything else about the Potters or Saul in particular, it hadn't been important enough (or recent enough) for him to have recalled.

",I never fault a man for wanting to make enough money to feed their family and keep them safe. In many ways it is what I've being doing ever since the war ended. I've the mind you been doing the same despite what the news vids say about your recent professional protection," Potter was saying, snatching Dash away from combing his mind for recollections. "As a good friend of mine says, ‘alliance lies to suit their needs' so I am going a bit on faith with you. Hell, I survived on less before,."

"Seems t' be a recurrin' ruttin' theme, puhn yoh," Sam muttered, offering a nod. His gaze fell away from the man, regarded the diminishing contents of his glass, and then, once more, fleetingly met the eyes of the brunette across the bar.

",But I digress," Potter continued as Sam grinned in response to the girl's quickly averted gaze and let his own attentions return to their potential client, "Let's be truthful here so we can come to an agreement. I don't have more than 500 to give you at the start and I can only spare 5 drums. Unless your man who just left can actually beat Bart in the ring, I have no way to gather more funds between now and tomorrow when we leave. But, there are funds where we are going, if you can wait a tic. I can easily offer you another 1000 on Pegasus, bullets flying or not, but I am looking for quiet like and off the scanners in two days." He says holding two fingers up for emphasis. "Now I believe you are up to that challenge if half of what I hear about you is true. Also, Pegasus is in its apogee so that will cut down the flight time. Now we get there, there is an opportunity to make double what I am offering but I can't speak of that until we get there and it won't make your alliance friends happy. So if this ain't your cup of tea, well I am happy to pay for your drinks and call it a day. What do you say?"

Sam sucked a sharp breath between his teeth and his face contorted into an expression that might be mistaken for uncertainty. As if to emphasize (or, more precisely, punctuate) that, the pilot picked his glass up from the table and shot the rest of it's contents down his throat. "I dunno where yer schoolin' in navigation er pilotin' might fall, Potter Shian Shen," he winced in the wake of that swallow of whiskey, "but at an even burn from here ta Bellerophon on standard routes'll take most boats two an' a half, mebbe th' better part o' three days. Ghostin' it, typical's gonna add an extra day er two fer yer av'rage pilot what's worth a hump,"

He sighed, eyes sliding away from Potter to regard the bottom of his now empty glass. "‘Course, I ain't yer av'rage pilot," he added with a grin, his gaze lifting, now, to regard Wyatt, "an' Roc ain't yer av'rage boat. Plus, fifteen hun'erd ain't nothin' ta scratch yer nethers over, I'll need ta do some figgerin', Cap, an' we'll be burnin' hard an' shifty, but I reckon I c'n get us there in two, on th' down-low. May cost us some extra boodle in maintenance in th' end an' it won't be no ruttin' pleasure cruise but I c'n make it happen."

Sam shrugged and, lifting his empty glass, got to his feet. "I'm empty, ag'in," he announced needlessly, clapping Wyatt on the shoulder, "Yer boat, Wyungsung, yer haggle from here. I'ma go get topped off," he waved the empty glass in the direction of the bar, first, then, with a not-so-discrete nod toward the brunette he'd been eyeing, added, "an' then mebbe get m'self topped off, get me?"

((OOC: So, as usual, room for interruptions/interjections throughout. If Wyatt doesn't object to Sam excusing himself, at this point, Dash will make for the bar where he'll order another drink for himself and one for the brunette. Assuming no interruptions or questions from Wyatt and Potter to that point, he'll take the drinks he's ordered and swagger over to introduce himself to the lovely!))

Okay, so I think I've had some outstanding success, here. I reached out to Lady Dark and she expressed not only interest but, also, a bit of excitement at the prospect of picking up Maggie Hellfire for us!

I've played/written with her before and can certainly vouch for her abilities. I have no doubt she'll be a good addition/re-cast and will bring some fun flavor to our first mate.

...the geology, climate, and small number of the continents makes it kind of tough, for sure. Factor in the "high-magic" aspect of your setting and, I've gotta admit, I'm stumped.

I'm not a big fan of high-magic realms, myself (PCs planes-walking and the like), as I find it really complicates the living crap out of things for me. In most all of my campaign settings, the magic level is really low OR magic is costly to wield (spells can take hours or days, the "mage" suffers hp and/or stat loss from the casting, things like that)... "Magic is the domain of gods and dragons. Trifling with such powers as a mortal can lead to nothing but madness."

Anyhoo, my own predilections where magic is concerned aside, I think that's where your solution lies. Based on what you've described, I think the only way things could be resolved, or even continue on, for that matter (especially with folks living in a world where hundreds of terrasques are running around), would have to be the result of some pretty hefty magical or divine intervention.

I'll have to give all of this a LOT more thought if I'm going to be of anymore assistance than that, I'm afraid.

I never let any of my adventurers leave the castle WITH the princess, or the total contents of the treasury, and, for sure, no ballistas, catapults, or other siege weapons.

On the other hand, I can almost guarantee that every character I've ever played had been outfitted with a knife, a waterskin, and some rope or twine of some kind... and if they left the castle without them, they regretted it in short order.

Okay, first off, multiple tarrasques is INSANE! Those things are, what? Fifty feet tall and probably close to that wide? I feel a great swell of pity for your poor world! I would imagine that the damage would be extensive and, dare I say, apocalyptic, not much of anything left, at all.

Now, that said, a few thoughts that came to mind as I was reading this were:

1) About how many tarrasques are we actually talking about, here? 10? 100? More? The more there are, of course, the more devastating the outcome for the world and it's wildlife. If there was an ungodly amount of them summoned at the beginning, it could be entirely possible that they ended up consuming ALL of the wildlife and, perhaps, begun to turn on one another leaving only one or two left,

2) Exactly how big is your world? Did the Ravaging take place all across the planet or, rather, was it confined to just a certain part (i.e. The continent on which the grieving wizard lived and perhaps some of it's outlying islands or whatever)? If it was a planet-wide catastrophe, you might pigeon-hole yourself into a never-ending post-apocalyptic scenario. On the other hand, if the Ravaging was more localized (say, to the "known world" as far as the PCs understand it), there's hope that, beyond the utter desolation of everything they know, there are new lands teaming with life and promise,

*shrugs* Lots of things to consider and factor in, I suppose, and I have a tendency to waaaaaaaay overthink things, at times, but, there you have my initial thoughts for what they're worth.

I see you've added a second post... allow me to peruse.

Sam is perfectly happy to let Wyatt do the bulk of the negotiating, of course, but I figured that he'd also recognize Potter's paranoia and make the offer of taking the "roundabout" way... with the bump up in cost to offset fuel and stores consumption and, maybe, the implication of discretion, as well...

Topic: Voyages of Rocinante - Serenity/Firefly RPG
Subject: Don't mind me. Jus' standin' here doin that professional protection thing.

When Wyatt finally turned to engage Potter, Sam stepped out of the space between them, sipping at his whiskey and letting his eyes pan The Slaughterhouse again. Pegasus, he mused as the haggling commenced between Potter and the Captain, One o' Bellerophon's moons. That's about two days out, three if'n ya wanna keep off the scanners,

That particular thought forced Dash to tear his gaze away from a fine looking (at least from this distance) brunette across the bar and he glanced back over his shoulder at their potential passenger. The man was doing a good job of maintaining an air of relaxation, but there was something about the way his eyes skittered about. Sam had seen eyes like that before, Every time I look in a ruttin' mirror, and had felt them rolling around in his own head for nigh on seven years or better. They were the eyes of a man who wasn't just expecting trouble to be lurking in the shadows, he was plumb convinced it was there and aiming directly at him.

,Yeah, the pilot decided, tipping his glass to his lips, he's on th' dodge from somethin'. Takin' an extra day an' ghostin' it'll be somethin' ta keep in mind, I reckon.

He swallowed the whiskey as his thoughts turned back to what else he could recall about Pegasus. It wasn't much. As far as he could recollect, he hadn't even seen the place aside from, maybe, a distant fly by or two. He kind of remembered hearing something, toward the end of the war, about the Alliance building some kind of base there. What kind of base, though, and whether the thing got finished or even started, for that matter, were details that Sam's memory couldn't call up. That fact, coupled with Potter's twitchy eyes, stoked an ember in the coals of Dash's own paranoia.

What're ya runnin' from, lao sheong, he wondered, managing to keep from asking the question aloud by pouring another taste of whiskey past his lips, an' what peck o' trouble're we gonna get into if'n we're caught with ya?

",So, this is what I'm conjurin' up," Wyatt was saying, then, "Eight hun'red plus the drums already on the table an' an additional five hun'red should there be a need t' engage in any kind o' cowboyin' plus the cost o' any munitions spent in yer service. Hazard pay, dohn ma?"

"If ya wanna kick it up to an even thousand," Sam interjected, turning to face the men, "I figger I could see to it as we get there quiet-like." He shrugged a little. "It'd take an extra day but we'd keep off the scanners an' outta the sight o' any pryin' eyes, get me?"

Subject: Well, isn't that just dandy?

June 3rd 1670, Tortuga Bay Settlement, roughly 12:05 p.m.; The Rub of DelMonte common room

"Jus' tryin' ta find a job," Fin grumbles, mostly under his breath, as he stomps down the steps, "but tha' can' be done wi'out someone tryin' ta kill me, No, tha'd be too bloody simple, wouldn' it?" A wide-hipped blonde woman with a dingy white blouse and a low neckline struggles to move out of his way. Reaching the bottom of the stairway, Crowe strides for the door leading to the street, his hard eyes sweeping the room before him, daring any to meet his gaze.

"Where c'n a bloke find a decent bottle o' rum in this shyte-hole town," he asks no one in particular, and certainly not under his breath.

"I dare say you've found the place, sir," echoes the reply in a fine alto.

Gazing in the direction of the instruction, Fin watches as a man descends the last few steps. Taller than Fin, this individual's brown hair is pulled back in a ponytail and tied off with a black bow. Collar high with a blue tie, he wears a powder blue top coat despite the heat and a ruffled blouse beneath it. Ruffles even spread from his sleeves draping over his hands, one of which holds a black cane with a silver knob on the end in the shape of an owl's head. His britches are knee-length and of a similar blue to his coat, and his stockings are a light gray. Black, highly-polished shoes with brass buckles scrape the last of the stairs and settle upon the squeaky wooden floor. His thin brown eyebrows are raised politely and his aristocratic features set in a bored play.

"Perhaps you would deign to allow me the honor of purchasing you said beverage?"

Honor, again, is it?

Fin's brows raise, too, as he turns and slowly assesses the dandy of a man. Where the fop's expression was one of polite boredom, though, Crowe's spoke more to skepticism laced, perhaps, with a bit of curiosity. This wasn't the sort of man with whom Fin would typically be found drinking, robbing, perhaps, or stalking in search of a prize. Even more curious in the pirate's mind was that the coxcomb fellow had invited him,

The quartermaster hooked his thumbs over the top of his belt as his scrutinizing gaze made its way back from the other man's highly polished shoes, past the powder blue poofery of his frilly garb, and settled, once more, on the aristocratic set of the man's visage. For the flicker of an instant, Fin considered telling the man to go f*&% himself. Instead, though, one corner of his mouth pulled up into the beginnings of something more affable than the grim sneer he'd been wearing and he offered the other man a curt nod. "Aye," he rumbled, a faint shrug of his shoulders accompanying the word, "Why th' hell not? Ye look 's if ye c'n afford it,."

He took a couple of steps in the fop's direction, adding; "If it's anythin' more'n th' drinks ye've got in mind, though, I'll pass. I've had more'n my fill o' folk f*&^in' wit' me, t'day."

((OOC: All right, if the frilly robin's egg doesn't run off, let's have a drink with the man and see where it goes, Fin will let the man lead the way to a table or the bar at his discretion.))

Additionally, I was going to give Maggie a bit of hell about being the first person to kill someone on this gods-forsaken island until I realized the timestamps gave that dubious honor to Fin... Not even two hours after the Sun Dog put into port. So very glad the dice were on my side with that one.

Tuesday, June 3rd, 1670 a.d., Tortuga Bay Settlement (Ile de la Tortue), roughly 12:03 P.M..; The Rub of Del Monte

"Anyone else wanna kill me, today?!" Crowe's eyes lift from where Kidane's corpse lay, entrails seeping slowly from its opened belly.

None of the five who'd accompanied the big slaver onto the Rub of DelMonte's balcony offer a reply, or so much as dare to meet the quartermasters gaze, for that matter, instead, they simply stare in shock and horror at the sight of Kidane lying in a pool of his own blood and guts,

"Aye," Fin grumbles, flicking the blood from his blades before returning them to their places, "I thought ‘s much."

,The crowd filling the balcony's doorway, too, had fallen silent, and many a face shared the same horrified expressions as Kidane's men. From just beyond that stunned silent crowd, though, Fin heard a trio of familiar voices.

"Fin! Ya there?"

"Quartermaster!"

"Move aside, I say!"

Glancing past the frozen men, Crowe spots a jostling of the people and Emanuel breaks through looking somehow both frustrated and concerned. Behind him, Aleksi and Zec stumble onto the balcony.

"Sir?" Emanuel queries with raised eyebrows while immediately assessing that his quartermaster is in a predicament. All three of the Dog's crew have hands on sword hilts and both Emanuel and Aleksi Rautio have their other hand on pistols at their waists.

"So ya did hear me, eh," Fin smirks in response to the brawny little Mexican. "Yer a bit late ta th' party, lads," he adds, mopping sweat from his brow with the back of his arm, as his gaze flits to Alexi and Zec, "but I'd appreciate ye seein' tha' these lubbers clean up their rubbish ‘fore they shove off," He gives Kidane's cooling corpse a kick to emphasize the word ‘rubbish' before he steps over it and strides for the door, "I'm in need o' an honest drink," he mumbles, clapping Emanuel on the shoulder as he passes by.

Adrenaline still coursing through him, the Sun Dog's quartermaster shoulders through the crowd still gathered in the doorway with scarcely a "get th' f*&# outta m'way" needing to be uttered and snatches a half full cup from one of the onlooker's hands as he goes. He drains the thing in a single tip and, as he reaches the top of the stairs, unceremoniously tosses the cup away. "Jus' tryin' ta find a job," Fin grumbles, mostly under his breath, as he stomps down the steps, "but tha' can' be done wi'out someone tryin' ta kill me, No, tha'd be too bloody simple, wouldn' it?" Reaching the bottom of the stairway, Crowe strides for the door leading to the street, his hard eyes sweeping the room before him, daring any to meet his gaze.

"Where c'n a bloke find a decent bottle o' rum in this shyte-hole town," he asks no one in particular, and certainly not under his breath,

((OOC: Okay, Fin's off in search of a "decent drink" and to do the job Anna sent him ashore to do, to begin with. He's not necessarily expecting an answer to that last question, of course, but if any suggestions are offered up, he's apt to point himself in the direction proposed.))

Been playing through this combat on Roll20 and, I've gotta say, it's soooooo much fun!

One problem, though... I'm not finding the map for this encounter. When I log in, I see a map of the ship and tokens for the PC crew... no Kidane or his cronies... am I missing something?

...so, at this point, I need to give you a bit of text/clarification for my attack and then roll for to hit only? Is it d20 to hit?

Also... do I start with the attack as posted in the game thread?
