Topic: Star Trek: Cerberus Recruitment
Subject: Charatcer sheets?

All right, since this is a Discovery spinoff, I'd like to have character creation follow along the lines that were established for those games. Here's an example using Commander Mac (still updating this a bit to fill in some history but...)

Commander Jonathan R (Jack) MacTavish
Player: Eol Fefalas
Current Assignment: Commanding Officer; USS Cerberus
Gender: Male
Date of Birth: 2334-05-20
Birthplace: New Edinburgh, Caldos IV
Height: 6' 0"
Weight: 168 lbs
Eyes: Gray
Hair: Dark Brown (graying)

Physical Description: While there is something imposing (and vaguely threatening) about Jack MacTavish it is difficult to pin-point exactly what it might be. Standing just at six feet tall – give or take an eighth of an inch – and weighing in at a lean 168 pounds, the USS Discovery’s Tactical Officer is far from the largest crew member on board and, if he went toe-to-toe with a Klingon of roughly the same age and experience, some might mistakenly be lead to believe that the wiry human would be hard pressed to hold his own against the “son of Kah’less.” Those who would appraise more than physical stature and appearance, though, would invariably find themselves wondering what it was about the Caldos IV native that made them worry more about how the Klingon might fare… Perhaps the way the Tac Officer carries himself with air of confidence (as if he were twice his actual size) and an authoritative bearing (as if he were Admiral of the Fleet as opposed to a recently pipped Lieutenant) has something to do with it. Or, maybe, it’s the impassive, hawk-like glint in his eyes and the close-cropped severity of his dark hair (already showing a peppering of gray at the temples) that likens him – at least in the minds of many Starfleet personnel – to “that one, relentless, taskmaster, son-of-a-bitch” drill instructor that no rank-and-filer will ever forget even if they live to be 300!

Family and Background: Eldest son of Robert and Bronwyn MacTavish (both employed with the Planetary Engineering Department at the University of New Edinburgh (?) – Robert as a professor/researcher in the Nanotechnology branch and Bronwyn serving as a professor of Ecology). Younger brother, Ian (disappeared from Caldos IV on 2356.07.08 )suspected of being affiliated with the terrorist organization known as the Maquis; current location unknown. ((updating))

Education:
University of Edinburgh, Caldos IV (2351-2354): majored in History (excelled at Military History)

Starfleet Academy(2354-2358 ): History/Tactics major; minored in Security Forces Logistics and Starship Gunnery. Excelled academically but records indicate several incidents where Cadet MacTavish was reprimanded for “insubordination,” “failure to carry out orders as directed by his superior officer,” “Striking a fellow Cadet,” and other, similar infractions.

Service Record:
2354: Accepted to Starfleet Academy
2358.05.15: Graduated Starfleet Academy, commissioned Ensign.
2358.05.29: Assigned to USS Vigilance, Security Forces
2359.04.19: Promoted to Lieutenant (jg)
2361.03.05: Transferred to Starbase 375, Security Forces
2362.01.21: Demoted to Ensign (Disobeying a direct order, assaulting a superior officer, improper treatment of detainee).
2362.03.21: Assigned to Tactical Station, Starbase 375
2363.01.12: Promoted to Lieutenant (jg)
2363.09.13: Instrumental in repelling Cardassian assault on Starbase 375
2364.01.15: Assigned to USS Warden, Security Forces/Junior Tactical Officer
2364.11.04: Assumes Chief Tac Officer duties aboard USS Warden after Lt. Oliver Tahn is killed in the line of duty.
2365.02.04: Promoted to Lieutenant
2366.03.12: Assigned to USS Discovery, Tactical Officer
2366.03.26: Establishes “First Contact” with a sentient species (Lt MacTavish refers to them as ‘Racooleemurs’) on Gavin III.
2366.10.21: Designated Second Officer of USS Discovery
2366.11.18: Kills BTF cell leader, Ian MacTavish during an attempt to thwart a terrorist plot involving a shipment of vaccine to Aldor V.
2367.06.26: Marries Chantelle Hemlos
2368.07.01: Promoted to Lt Commander
2371.01.21: Transferred to Akira Class Heavy Cruiser USS Warden as Chief Tactical/Security Officer and 2O
2373.09.13: Designated XO of the Warden
2374.05.17: Promoted to Commander2374.08.31: Assumes command of Steamrunner-class Light Cruiser USS Cerberus

Medical History:
2354 – Starfleet Academy Entrance Physical: Scans show Cadet has been treated for several fractures, a number of lacerations, and numerous other bodily injuries throughout the course of childhood and adolescence. Compression fractures to hands and microfractures to facial portions of the skull would suggest injuries were largely the result of physical confrontation (fighting).
2363.09.14: Treated for injuries from energy weapon discharge, multiple abrasions and contusions, removed shrapnel resultant of computer panel explosion from right cheek. (Updating)

Commendations and Reprimands:
2355.11.10: Reprimand: Starfleet Academy - “Striking a fellow Cadet,” “Conduct unbecoming a Starfleet Cadet”. Confined to quarters (7 days), Transporter privileges suspended (30 days)
2357.10.13: Reprimand: Starfleet Academy – “Insubordination,” “Failure to carry out orders as directed by superior.” Confined to quarters (14 days), (Record indicates that Cadet MacTavish was originally supposed to repeat the Tactics program; however, in “disregarding the orders as issued” Cadet MacTavish provided a more efficient and effective resolution to the simulation scenario. Requirement to repeat the program was suspended.)
2360.06.20: Commendation: Meritorious Service Award
2362.01.21: Reprimand: “Improper treatment of a detainee, Disobeying a direct order, Striking a Superior Officer” – Demotion to Ensign, 60 days confinement, Reassignment from SF to Ops.
2363.09.15: Commendation: Medal of Valor – for conspicuous gallantry and actions beyond the call of duty during the Cardassian assault on SB375

Personal Bio:
Despite the scientific and academic leanings of their parents, Jack MacTavish and his brother Ian were ‘typical Scottish lads’ in the early years of their childhoods on Caldos IV – boisterous, mischievous, rough-and-tumble boys, all but inseparable, who were always up for fun and/or trouble where ever and when ever it could be found but overall ‘good lads who loved and respected their Ma and Da” and were fiercely proud of and loyal to their family. Both of the MacTavish boys showed an early and rather interesting penchant for strategy and tactics and often easily bested other children they played with in games such as Capture the Flag, King of the Mountain, etc. As they grew into adolescence, they also became somewhat notorious for being two off the toughest scrappers in New Edinburgh – never turning from (and, more often than not, winning)a fight even if it appeared the odds weren’t in their favor. This strategic and tactical awareness, though, wasn’t only limited to the physicality of game-playing and fisticuffs – especially in Jack’s case. While Ian was perfectly happy to be in the thick of things, enjoying the rushes of adrenaline and the frantic energy of combat and competition, Jack also found himself intrigued by the more cerebral aspects of conflict and confrontation. On days when Caldos IV’s weather put a damper on any goings on outdoors, Jack would entertain himself by reviewing historical data archives, reading accounts and reviews of battles of all ages, and recreating them in computer simulations (often taking on the role of the historical loser of the conflict in question and “rewriting history” by figuring out how the tables could have been turned on the documented victor). The pursuits and interests of his childhood led Jack to enroll in the University of New Edinburgh where his major course of study was History (with a focus on military history, strategies, and tactical operations). He also studied boxing, fencing, and other forms of personal combat while attending the University and held the title of Caldos IV Intercollegiate Stratagem Champion for the last two years of attendance at UNE. It was during Jack’s years at the University that he and Ian began drifting apart. While Jack found his interests and abilities focused and directed by his education, his younger brother had seemed to allow his to be directed by the ideals and precepts of political extremists whom he had befriended in Jack’s absence. This philosophical parting of ways continued and intensified when Jack applied for admission to Starfleet Academy.During the first two years at the Academy Jack flourished (aside from a few minor incidents where his temperament and respect for authority were called into question) but, in his absence, Ian further aligned himself with “political extremist and special interest groups of questionable intent.” Cadet MacTavish, of course, was questioned extensively by Federation and Starfleet officials in regards to his brother’s affiliations and investigated at length to determine if he, too, demonstrated any such similar leanings. When the investigations concluded – and it was determined that Jack did not, in fact, have any leanings toward or associations with any of these organizations aside from his brother – Jack contacted Ian and “read him the riot act” over the trouble Ian was causing (and likely getting into), promising to “discuss it further” with him when Jack returned home on furlough. Ian, of course, was indignant about the whole thing and railed against the Federation and Starfleet in return, and swore to be more than prepared for that ‘discussion.’ However; on 2356.07.08, when Jack MacTavish returned to Caldos IV on that furlough, his brother Ian also seemingly disappeared from the planet, severing all ties with family and friends. (It is presumed that he left in the company of several other persons of interest monitored by Starfleet Intelligence and, after departing Caldos IV, wound up working as an agent for any number of radical organizations. Ian MacTavish has been spotted several times since, but intelligence cannot confirm that he has settled in any particular location, neither can it determine for certain if he still maintains affiliation with any particular group(s) from his youth. The most recent sighting of Ian MacTavish, however, places him in the company of two known Maquis operatives.) Jack and Ian still haven’t had that “discussion;” a fact that seems to weigh heavily on the elder MacTavish’s mind at times. This familial rift may account for Cadet MacTavish’s handling of his final Tactics examination in which, during a simulation of an historical starship battle, Jack blatantly disregarded the orders of his “Captain,” arguing tactical wisdom with the other Cadet while simultaneously employing his own (repeatedly recommended) tactics to resolve the re-created conflict. While MacTavish’s tactical decisions proved more effective and efficient than did the ‘Captain’s’ – in fact, setting a record time for resolution of this particular scenario – Jack was still reprimanded for his insubordination and appropriately punished (the mandatory failure of the Tactics course, however, was waived due to the Cadet’s outstanding performance, otherwise). In 2358, Jack MacTavish graduated from the Academy and was assigned to the Security Forces detail aboard the USS Vigilance – a military vessel alternately assigned to patrol the border of the Neutral Zone between Romulan and Federation space and the contentious region of space along the Federation/Cardassian border. His outstanding performance aboard the Vigilance – helping to organize and deploy the Security teams more effectively – earned him a fairly quick promotion to Lieutenant (junior grade) and gained him some notice among the Starfleet Security/Tactical Operations Community. Shortly thereafter Jack was re-assigned to the security forces contingent aboard Starbase 375 (at the installation commander’s request) as aSEC.His career aboard SB375, at first, seemed as promising as his career aboard the Vigilance had been. Upon arrival, Jack immediately set about re-organizing and restructuring the Security details, quickly bringing them up to the performance and efficiency levels of his squads aboard the Vigilance, and even though his ‘gruff, hard-nosed, should-have-been-a-marine’ reputation preceded him, he gained the respect of his superiors and subordinates alike – though, among the subordinates, that respect was paid somewhat begrudgingly. There were some, too, among the Senior Officers aboard SB375 who cringed or curdled at MacTavish’s attitude – he was known to speak his mind in a brutally blunt manner at times and never let rank or protocol prevent him from doing so if he felt it was called for; “Beggin’ yer pardon, Sir, but that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard,” was not an uncommon thing to be heard from Lt (jg) MacTavish in staff meetings (or in the corridors for that matter) – but, for all intents and purposes, they considered him to be an outstanding officer. In 2362, a team of Cardassian saboteurs were discovered and captured aboard SB 375. The Cardassians – who were far from cooperative – were taken to detention for questioning. MacTavish was ordered to postpone questioning until the CSO and the installation Commander could arrive as it was suspected that one of the infiltrators was the son of a Cardassian Gul of some repute – protocol dictates that one of such standing may not be questioned by one of lesser standing. Despite those orders, MacTavish began a cursory debriefing of the suspects during which time, several verbal and mild physical exchanges took place between MacTavish and the Cardassians. In the end, the Cardassians’ lit the fuse to Jack’s temper and he was goaded into throwing the son of the Cardassian Gul a good, sound beating. When the Commander and the CSO arrived, Jack was in the midst of pummeling the Cardassian – who had suddenly stopped fighting back – and, when the Commander tried to intervene, he found himself in the path of Jack’s right cross and a flurry of expletives. The incident, much to the delight of the Cardassians, saw MacTavish arrested, sent to the brig, and demoted to Ensign. MacTavish was also required to submit to s psychological evaluation and counseling sessions for anger management. The result of this was to find Jack reassigned, upon his release, from security forces to Ops (thankfully, they at least assigned him to the Tac station) the idea being that he might be less volatile if kept distanced from the hustle and bustle of Security. Again, MacTavish excelled in his position at Tactical Ops and very little that occurred on or around SB 375 escaped his attention. Had it not been for his attention to detail and quick, adaptive thinking at the Tac Station, SB375 might very well have fallen to the Cardassians when they staged an assault on the installation in late 2363. While SB 375 did sustain damage and suffer a handful of casualties in the assault, MacTavish was able to quickly and efficiently direct the defenses and counter assault, despite being wounded himself. He was awarded the Medal of Valor for his actions that day.A few months later, MacTavish was transferred to another military vessel, the USS Warden, at the request of the Warden’s Chief Tactical Officer (who turned out to be none other than Jack’s dorm-mate at the Academy, Oliver Than). The details of the USS Warden’s mission are still classified and under review; thus they are only available to persons with proper clearance and need to know. It is known that Lt Oliver Tahn was killed in the line of duty aboard the Warden and, upon his demise, MacTavish assumed the post of CTO and was promoted to Lieutenant shortly thereafter. Upon completion of the USS Warden’s tour, the crew was disbanded and reassigned while the vessel entered drydock for repair and refitting. Jack was somewhat disappointed to find himself transferred to a Science and Exploration vessel christened the USS Discovery, but manning the TAC station aboard a Galaxy Class Starship does hold a certain appeal.((Updating to reflect elapsed time from post on Discovery))

Gavison captaining the Charon... that would be interesting!

I figure crewing up will take a few weeks, at least, and the game may get underway for sure towards teh end of December or so (possibly sooner but it could be worked out that the Cahron doesn't come into play until then... Cerberus was planned to creew up (for the most part) at SB 10 and then ship out for DS9 where she'll meet up with Charon before heading for the Gamma Quandrant.

Glad to see such an interest

To answer a few questions:

DemonDavyJones - Yes, this is freeform... sort of... I will assume the role of the captain, and will lay the most basic foundations for the plot. However, as in the episodes of that series, it will largely be the rest of the crew that determine the outcome of various missions. You will be given almost free reign to form the story, within reason. However, "god moding", plot hijacking, and controlling of other people's characters are all strictly prohibited, and will be cause for dismissal from the game.

If you are interested in joining, you will first need a concept for your primary character. I say primary due to the fact that a starship of this size holds approximately one thousand crew, counting all of the officers, enlisted crew, and civilians on board. Naturally, our gaming group will be MUCH smaller than this! In order to tell the story, it often becomes necessary to introduce minor characters or NPCs - you will have the freedom to create these, as long as it makes sense for you to do so.

For instance, let's say that you are playing the role of our chief engineer. You will be responsible for setting duty watches, maintaining the various systems, etc. Naturally, you'll need many engineers and technicians, so you will be encouraged and expected to give some of these names and (at the very least) cursory descriptions.

This is not to say that, as chief engineer, you would never have cause to speak with an NPC science officer. If need be, create one! But you should probably check with the head of that department before doing so.... Prett much freeform, you see, just with some stipulations.

DragonMistress - I hadn't envisioned RGF (or Romulan Marines) being posted to the Cerberus... I had planned a small group of Romulans being aboard for other purposes, though (primarily to oversee the cloaking devices that are on loan to Starfleet for the Cerberus/Charon mission that may or may not work) Whip me up a concept for your Romulan, though, and we;ll see what we can come up with.

Coming soon... a list of Depts and positions that may help with concepts and, as soon as I doctor it up a bit, an 'example' of what I'm looking for in character write ups.

Stardate: 51699.5 (Saturday, August 31, 2374, 0635)
Starbase 10 – Visiting Officers Quarters

Betazed had fallen.

The Jem’Hadar had secretly assembled a large invasion force in the Kalandra sector, which Starfleet had believed was too far from Dominion territory to represent a major threat. At the same time, the Tenth Fleet was caught out of position at the start of the invasion because some protocol wrapped idiot had decided that sending them out on a training exercise rather than reinforcing strategic positions was a wiser use of time. That tactical disadvantage was further compounded by the relative weakness of Betazed’s antiquated defenses.

In the end, it had taken the Dominion only ten hours to conquer the planet and its outlying colonies. It was a humiliating defeat for the Federation and, for perhaps the first time in the nearly twenty years he had served, Jack MacTavish was almost ashamed to admit that he was a Tactical Officer with Starfleet. There were now thousands of Dominion troops crawling around on Betazed’s surface, likely thousands of Betazoid’s dead or missing…

An’ tha missin’ll be wishin’ they were dead e’re it’s all done, Jack fumed as he crushed out the nub of a cigar in an Archonian marble ashtray, It’s only been a week but I c’n bloody-well guarantee tha’ them fargin’ Cardassians’ve a’ready pockmarked tha place wi’ interment an’ labor camps an’ shyte!

…In fact, it hadn’t been long after the Dominion forces had claimed Betazed as their own that Intel had begun to intercept bits and pieces of information regarding construction of Sentok Nor – a massive, starbase labor camp in orbit of the planet – just as they had done with Bajor. The opening battle of the Federation-Dominion War, in fact, had seen the recapture of that very station, Terok Nor – or, as MacTavish preferred the Federation designation it was given, Deep Space Nine – by a Dominion assault force led by the notorious Cardassian Gul, Dukat.

Another fargin’ blunder tha’ ye c’n pin on Fleet Brass, MacTavish continued to grumble inwardly, If they’d’ve reinforced tha’ position when tha first o’ tha Dominion fleet started flushin’ through tha’ wairmhole, Sisko’d’ve had a better chance’t holdin’ it. He hauled himself out of his seat, took a quick slug of the coffee he had requested from the replicator, and then shrugged into his uniform jacket. Leavin’ tha poor bastard oot there wi’ naught but tha Defiant an’ a single Klingon Baird O’ Prey… Jayzus!

Of course, Captain Sisko had rectified all of that some five months later when he led Operation Return, soundly defeating the Cardassian/Dominion forces and returning DS9 to Federation control. Despite that victory – and several other lesser battles won – Jack knew that this war was still early in its life and things were going to get a lot worse before they even showed the first signs of getting better; the Battle of Betazed was proof of that.

Jack heaved an exasperated sigh, chased it back into his gullet with another slug of coffee, and then checked his reflection in the mirror above the sink. He studied his image for a long moment, then the Commander’s pips he held in his hand received similar scrutiny before he finally convinced himself to affix them to the collar of his TAC golds.

“Computer,” Jack demanded, straightening the pips just so, “Time.”

=/\=The current time is zero-six-forty-three hours.=/\= the synthesized voice of the Starbase computer informed him, =/\=You have an appointment scheduled with a Starfleet Command delegation in Conference Room Three at zero-seven-hundred, Commander MacTavish…=/\=

“Aye,” Jack growled, striding for the door, “I’m aware o’ tha’, thank ye.”

Fargin’ bloody meetin’s an’ runnin’ willy-nilly back’n farth, he continued his internal tirade even as he stalked out of his billet and made for the turbolift, Bastards pull me offa my ship ta drag me across the quadrant for a come ta Jayzus meetin’ er sommat when they know damn good’n well tha’ there’s still incursions slippin’ in past tha NZ… This’d better no’ be some bloody rail inta an admin slot er so help me I’ll eat an admiral!

Starbase 10; Conference Room 3 – 0655

Jack hesitated just outside the broad, double-sized hatch that led to the conference room and turned his eyes towards the gently curving viewport across the corridor. The spacedocks that floated in the void beyond that viewport were nearly at capacity – one of them nestling a Galaxy, as well as an Intrepid class vessel, and the other supporting an Akira and a pair of what looked to be light cruisers, though, between the ribs of the spacedock obscuring his view and the distance from the station to the maintenance facility, it was difficult to define the classes of the smaller ships.

For a long moment, he stood there watching the swarms of workpods and shuttles tending to the repair and resupply of the Starfleet vessels, grumbling to himself all the while about being summoned from his post aboard the Warden to dance the bureaucratic mambo with a bunch of idealism-blinded boobs from Starfleet Brass. It’s bad enough ta leave tha girl shorthanded, he inwardly griped, but ta waltz me oot here wi’oot s’much as an explanation as ta why… It’s no’ a wonder tha’ Betazed got o’errun wi’ foolery such’s this.

The conference room doors unexpectedly hissed open behind him, then, snapping Jack out of his cynical reverie. He whirled around and found himself face to face with Rear Admiral Saurik, SQNTAC of the 419th TAC/SC Squadron. “Sair,” MacTavish barked, instantly coming to attention, “G’mornin’, sair.”

One of the Vulcan’s sharply angled brows lifted a centimeter higher than the other and, after a quick study of the Scotsman standing before him, Saurik offered a marginal nod. “It is indeed, morning, Commander MacTavish,” the SQNTAC affirmed, “however, whether or not it can be defined as good, I think, would depend on one’s usage and definition of the word.”

C’n ye no’ jus’ say ‘g’mornin’ back an’ be done wi’ tha thing? The straight-line logic and sometimes overly-analytical thinking of the Vulcan mind often frustrated him. “Aye, sair,” Jack acquiesced, “ye’ve got a point...” Aside from the one on yer head an’ those on yer ears. “Were ye lookin’ fer me, sair?”

“I was,” Admiral Saurik nodded, “we had been informed that you were consistently five minutes early for all of your appointments. It is now 0657 and we were beginning to wonder if, perhaps, you had been misdirected.”

It was Jack’s turn to spike a brow. An’ since I’m only three minutes early an admiral took it upon ‘imself ta prowl tha corridors lookin’ for me? I dinnae think so… “No sair,” MacTavish replied with a barely masked grin, “jus’ got a wee bit distracted by all o’ tha boats hangin’ oot inna open like tha’.” He inclined his head toward the spacedocks beyond the viewport; “Jus’ kinda wonderin’ if tha’ was tha wisest o’ choices given our proximity ta tha Typhon Expanse...”

The SQNTAC’s expression was unreadable but Jack did notice that the Vulcan’s dark eyes shifted for an instant to regard the knot of ships harbored in the docks and that one sharp brow lifted noticeably higher. “I fail to see the logic in your concern, Commander,” Saurik offered, turning to re-enter the conference room, “The Romulans have taken up strategic positions along the Expanse where it borders their space and the Sixth Fleet along with several augments from the Imperial Klingon Forces are buffering the front from Tarod to Argon.”

“Be tha’ as it may, sair,” MacTavish returned following the Admiral’s steps, “I dinnae trust tha Romulan’s – they did originally sign tha’ non-aggression pact wi’ tha Dominion, after all, an’ if t’weren’t fer tha assassination plot, they’d still be lettin’ Jem’Hadar ships gallivant through their backyard. They’ve already annexed Federation space along our side o’ tha NZ from Benzar ta Tarod. Honestly, sair, how long do ye reckon it’ll be ‘afore tha Roms stop stemmin’ Dominion incursions and jus’ rout ‘em o’er ta tha Alpha Quadrant side o’ tha front an…”

“Always the optimist, aren’t you, Mister MacTavish?” It wasn’t the subtle sarcasm in the question that stopped Jack in his tracks as much as it was the warm familiarity of the voice that had asked it.

Noah? Jack blinked, his eyes skimming the faces of the group gathered at the conference table. There were representatives there from Command, Tactical, and Intelligence – all the high brass that indicated something major in the works – as well as a small contingent of lesser officers but the most notable among them, at least as far as Jack was concerned, was Captain Noah Braden Blair; Commanding Officer of the USS Discovery. How in tha hell did I miss the registry onnat Galaxy? I should’ve known tha Discovery on sight!

“Cap’n Blair, sair,” Jack couldn’t help but smile as he regarded the man, “Tis grand ta be layin’ eyes on ye agin. Did ye get tha same ‘beatin-round-tha-bush’ invite ta this party as I did er, perhaps, do ye know wha’ all o’ this might be aboot?”

Blair grinned, rising from his seat as MacTavish approached; “Good to see you, too, Jack. I think I might have been enlightened a bit more than you have, my friend. This council, though, should clear that up.”

“Brilliant,” Mac grinned, “et’s no’ a court martial, then.”

“Hardly,” Captain Blair chuckled as he shook the Scot’s offered hand, “How is Chantelle?”

“Ah, she’s jus’ fine, sair,” Jack replied, “Wairkin’ a’ tha univairsity en New Edinburgh. I woulda ne’er expected tha lass ta take ta Caldos as she did, sair, but, bless ‘er, she luvs et...”

“If you would, Commander,” an Intel-gray clad commodore whom Jack recognized as D’vram Tao interjected, motioning to an empty seat at the end of the table, “I’m sure that Captain Blair and you will have the opportunity to get reacquainted after we have concluded our business here.”

MacTavish smirked. Seven years ago, despite the brass on Tao’s collar, the Tactical Officer might very well have offered up a venomous retort to the man’s condescending remark but, due in large part to having served under Blair, Jack had developed a bit more tact in situations that involved superior officers. “Aye, sair,” the Scotsman affirmed, “tha’ we will.” With a nod to his former CO, Commander MacTavish turned and approached the indicated seat.

“A’right, gentlemen,” he smiled and sat, absently scratching at the closely-cropped goatee that he had seen fit to cultivate after receiving his third pip some months ago, “I’d hate ta take up any more o’ yer time than’s absolutely necessary. What’s ol’ Jack done ta warrant the attentions o’ such a delegation?” He wasn’t sure if the smile that blossomed on Blair’s features just then was intended to express approval at the masked sarcasm of the comment or if it was indicative of some secret that the man was privy to.

“You are, of course, aware, Commander,” Rear Admiral Saurik droned, “that the Federation is currently at war with the Dominion…”

Ye dinnae say! Chroist but tha Wisdom o’ Spock ‘imself runs in yer veins, don’ it? “O’course, sair,” Jack nodded.

“…and that said war is proving to be, perhaps, one of the most costly and destructive wars in Federation history, even in what appear to be the infant stages…”

Jack couldn’t help but bristle at that. Betazed’s fallen, more systems an’ starbases than I’d care ta count’re now firmly behind enemy lines, an’ tha fargin’ Romulans’ve annexed a bonny lit’le chunk o’ Federation space under tha pretense o’ a bloody alliance tha’s likely ta fall apart once they ferret out a tactical advantage an’ ye still wanna call it tha infant stages?! “Beggin’ yer pardon, sairs,” he rumbled, “but if this is wha’ ye call tha infant stage o’ this war, I’d hate ta see wha’d have ta happen for ye ta categorize it inna rebellious teenager stage.

Meanin’ no disrespect, o’ course, but I’ve been oot there onna lines o’ this bloody thing since tha Dominion instigated tha rub wi’ us an’ tha Klingons! Tha’ was th’ damned infant stages, sairs! At tha very best, wha’ we’ve got now is a cranky, spoiled-rotten toddler wi’ a full diaper runnin’ aboot needin’ his lit’le arse paddled an’ taught a lesson in respect! It’s obvious ta me, given wha’s jus’ happened wi’ Betazed, tha’ th’ bastards’ve no’ a milligram o’ tha’!”

The command delegation had fallen silent in the wake of MacTavish’s chastisement and more than one stern glare was leveled in his direction. The Scot did notice, though, that Captain Blair was still smiling and that the heretofore silent Admiral from Starfleet Command, who sat at the table’s head, also bore the hint of a grin and was offering an approving nod to the USS Discovery’s CO. Nevertheless, Jack was somewhat surprised when he didn’t immediately get called down for insubordination.

“…Aside from the loss of various resources, in the form of starships, planetary installations, and the like,” Saurik continued as if he had never been interrupted, “one of the most telling indicators of the losses that Starfleet has suffered is the lack of competent Captains to command vessels as they become available.”

Tha’s been an issue as long as I’ve been in Starfleet, Jack fumed, keeping the comment to himself, wi’ a few exceptions ta tha’ rule, o’ course. His gaze shifted to Blair once more, trying to gage the situation by reading the man’s face. Something was going on here that Jack wasn’t expecting and he hoped to pick up on something from Blair that would maybe give him a small clue.

Saurik had begun a tediously detailed review of recent events, tying them in with the lack of command level officers currently available in the active corps of Starfleet. Jack resisted the urge to tell the Vulcan SQNTAC to cut to the bloody chase, opting instead to lean back in his chair a bit and steeple his fingers before his lips in a half-hearted attempt to mask an exasperated grimace.

Mercifully, the Fleet Admiral interrupted; “Thank you, Saurik. I’m certain that Commander MacTavish is more than aware of the casualties that we have suffered as a result of this conflict. I don’t think there’s any need to bore him with details that he’s surely been reviewing as long as we have.”

Saurik nodded curtly; “Admiral Blackmore,” and, without another word, returned to his seat and relinquished the floor to the senior man.

“Thank ye, sair,” Jack nodded.

“Of course, Commander,” Blackmore returned, “I’ve spoken at length with Captain Blair several times in the past few weeks in regards to you and he has informed me that you have little tolerance for the pleasantries and protocol in matters such as this…”

MacTavish nodded again, this time to Blair, as well.

“… he also informs me that, despite your disdain for the politics of it all, you’re an outstanding officer and something of a zealot when it comes to anything that may even hint at being a tactical concern…”

Jack, again, nodded faintly and may have even allowed a sheepish smile to play on his lips, but anything he may have thought of saying in reply to the Admiral was choked into silence by the man’s next statement.

“…To that end, Commander MacTavish, and given the rather verbose reasoning presented in Rear Admiral Saurik’s report, you have been selected to take command of the USS Cerberus effective as of 0800 hours today.”

MacTavish was stunned. So much so that, even though his jaw had dropped open and his eyes were on the verge of bugging out of their sockets, his nervous system couldn’t even register the fact that he looked like a gasping trout, let alone issue the commands to clear the expression from his features. “Command of a ship, sair,” he managed to splutter after an oddly drawn out moment, “Me?” He blinked in disbelief and look questioningly in Noah’s direction; “But… I’m only a… isn’t there…”

Blair was positively beaming, now, and slowly nodding his affirmation of the bomb that the Admiral had just dropped on the Scotsman’s brain.

“The Cerberus is a Steamrunner class ship, Commander,” Saurik informed him, “a light cruiser. She is currently berthed in Dock 2C where she is in the final stages of being configured and outfitted for your mission; the details of which…”

Jack’s head was spinning and he found it difficult to focus on the Vulcan. Me own command…How inna bloody hell…

“…The details of which will be loaded to the terminal in your Ready Room,” Admiral Blackmore cut off the Vulcan SQNTAC once more, “According to Ops, the Cerberus’ modifications should be completed in 36 hours. A good deal of your crew is already on station and will be advised to report to you no later than 0900 tomorrow.”

The senior brass in the room all rose to their feet, then, and Admiral Blackmore came around the table, thrusting a beefy hand in Jack’s direction. “Congratulations, Captain MacTavish,” the elder man grinned as a still blinking Jack accepted and shook his hand, “I look forward to seeing you requisition your command reds and… how did you put it… paddling the arse of that spoiled toddler out there.”

“Aye, sair,” Jack breathed, finally able to get to his feet, “I’ll do tha’ vera thing, sair.”

“Mm,” Blackmore grunted, flicking a wry glance over Jack’s shoulder at Blair, “I’m sure you will, Captain. Again, congratulations.”

The Admiral released his hand then and strode from the room. Following him, the remainder of the Starfleet brass filed past and offered their congratulations, as well, before dogging Blackmore’s steps out into the corridor… and they all addressed him as Captain. He hadn’t been promoted, of course – there would have been a separate ceremony for that, all together, and he knew he wouldn’t be adding a fourth pip to his collar any time soon – but the CO of a starship was customarily addressed as Captain regardless of rank… Jack found it all very disconcerting and unfamiliar…

When the last of the command entourage had disappeared through the hatch, Captain Blair laughed out loud; “You should see the look on your face, Jack! Priceless, I tell you!”

“Ye knew aboot this all along, then, did ye, sair?” There was an almost goofy, blissful grin on Jack’s face as he turned to face the Discovery’s Captain.

“I did,” Noah answered, “and, if I hadn’t been ordered to do otherwise, I wouldn’t have let them ambush you like they did. Although, seeing you rendered sputtering and speechless is a thing that I’m terribly glad I did not miss…”

Blair was standing closer now, his own hand extended to and accepted by the Cerberus’ new CO. “…Congratulations, Captain,” he smiled warmly, clapping his other hand on the Scotsman’s shoulder, “you’ve earned this one, Jack.”

“Aye,” Jack snickered, “buy us a Scotch or three an’ tell me agin, sair. Per’aps then I’ll believe et…”

You know who I really miss?

Jack MacTavish!

That's right... Good ol' Mac! Chief Tactical Officer of the USS Discovery. I've been thinking more and more about ol' Mac here in recent week and, given the recently increased activity on the site, I thought it might just be a good time to gage interest in taking another run at the galaxy Star Trek style. I had intended to get this game running about a year ago, actually, and got a pretty decent response, too, but we all know how it goes... Things happen, one thing leads to another, etc, etc, etc...

Anyway, like dear ol' Mac, "I'm not gonna let me bloody ship go doon wi'oot a fight, lads!" and we're going to give this another shot. Here's the deal:

Star Trek: Flight of the Cerberus is more or less a Discovery spinoff (much like TNG begat DS9, DS9 begat Voyager, so sayeth the Roddenberry, amen) set several years in the future from the present Discovery storyline. As far as timelines go, the game will “start” shortly after the fall of Betazed in the Dominion Wars (August of 2374) so, in this one folks, the Federation is actively at war, thus, Cerberus will lean a bit more to the military side than Discovery does. Yes, there will be MACO (Marine) units involved and posted aboard the ships… I’ll be posting more information as things progress, of course, but for the time being, let’s just start off with basic stuff shall we?

What kind of ship are we working with?

My initial concept was to use a single Steamrunner Class starship (the USS Cerberus) but, as I developed the concept/idea, I started thinking that a two ship team might be more appropriate (and, quite honestly, more believable) for the mission(s) we’ll be tackling, so I’m tacking on a second ship as well (a Saber Class vessel tentatively dubbed the USS Charon). And, yes, that means that there’s the possibility that we’ll actually be “staffing” both ships. This, of course, is based on the level of interest… If response is mild to medium, I’ll want to focus on staffing the Cerberus first, possibly relegating the Charon (and her crew) to an NPC-like role; however, if response is good enough, it would be great to actually get both ships loaded out with PC crew members…

What kind of characters are available or needed?

All of them! I need department heads, I need marines, I need engineers, scientists, and medical staff. I need counselors, I need security and tactical, I need a handful of Romulan “exchange officers” (PM me for details on the Romulans if you’re interested)…

What positions are already filled?

Hardly any… I’ll be handling the “Big Chair” of the Cerberus with the “future version” of Jack MacTavish and I may already have my TAC and/or SEC chief filled. Otherwise, I’ve got an empty ship and plenty of pips to pass out… As I mentioned, if interest is good enough, I may even be looking for another soul to “captain” the Charon and crew to fill the berths on that boat as well… Get to conceptualizing and wing those character ideas my way!

What are posting requirements going to be?

Much like Discovery, actually. It’s not necessary that you write novels but you will be expected to come up with decent posts at a minimum of once per week (more than one a week is great but keep the “quality vs quantity” thing in mind).

Okay, that takes care of the “bare bones” kind of stuff… As I mentioned, I’ll be posting updates and more substantial information as time goes on and I get a feel for what kind of interest there is in the game. Watch for a related Q&A thread to go up in the next couple of days…(or the next few minutes, depending on how ambitious I get)… in the meantime, feel free to post any questions, comments, or character concepts here. You can also PM me or send me an e-mail if you prefer. I look forward to hearing from you.

“If it’s okay, Cap’n, wouldja mind much if I stayed behind here with the Roc? I don’t like much in the way of how Bailey described this piece of dirt. Reminds me too much of home.

I’d like to stay back and keep Ma company, if you don’t mind. I know she can handle Bessy and all, but I’d just feel better if one of us stayed back here with her, you know.”

Kid’s skittish, Dash mused as he turned his eyes in Ash’s direction, Can’t say’s I blame ‘im…

“Besides…” Ash said with a smirk. “I got to grapple a bit last time we hit atmo. And I’d hate to have Dash all hating me when the school marm passed him over for someone with a bigger gun.”

Wyatt affirmed his approval of the Kid staying with the ship, sealing it up with a pat on Asher’s shoulder before offering his elbow to Willow. "Keep an eye out Dash," he offered after a few steps. "If this JW has government connections, an' we was mistaken for his transport as I gathered from Bailey, then he's just as likely t' have enemies. Last thing we need is us gettin' jumped an' humped while we make for the school."

“Preachin’ t’ th’ choir, Cap,” Dash replied, “If it looks ta be trouble comin’ our way, it’s kilt ‘fore it knows it’s here.”

…Nothing is what it seems. Carried by the tide, in darkness and in stillness, one is unaware of motion…

The words of his master faded away as Caise found himself drawn back into consciousness and, for a moment, the young Jedi found himself wondering to which of the overlapping realities those words applied most. Had he simply been dreaming – recalling a lesson long past – or had the Force carried the message to him for some more immediate but, as yet, unknown purpose? As his waking mind pondered this, Caise remained still and slowly allowed his senses to broaden their scope… first, an aura he was unfamiliar with but sensed had been nearby for sometime; …female..a medic…then, beyond the woman, Damanil’s now familiar matrix of energies. Better than last I saw him, the padawan thought. Caise’s fingers moved then, as if reminded by Shadoran’s still healing aura that he, too, had been injured and an exploration of his own injuries might be appropriate. Even as his senses spiraled out further and took in the other TDF medic, his hand moved, almost hesitantly towards his abdomen, finding ragged holes in his tunic and still tender flesh underneath.

Foolish, he chastised himself in the absence of Trask’s voice, you very well should be dead and it could have only been a fool’s luck that kept you alive!

As his senses found Dime, Caise moved to sit up, wincing a bit at the lingering sting of his injuries, and turned his veiled eyes in the Twi’lek’s direction. “You should have gone,” he said with a slight smile as he adjusted his robes, then turned to regard Damanil; “Both of you.”

…nothing is what it seems…

His sightless eyes regarded the medic who had attended him, then, and he offered her a nod of thanks before turning his gaze to the armored woman who sat nearby. There were vague, fleeting recollections of this particular aura and, Caise thought, as he studied her, something more to it than what those with physical sight might notice… a secret that she kept from most everyone she’d ever known… there was a violet sheen of energy surrounding her that belied that in his sight, though… this woman didn’t want anyone to know who she truly was and, as securely in place as that taciturn shroud of force was, she had been successful at it for some time.

“Leave in concealment what has long been concealed, yes?” he muttered, smiling faintly to the woman encased in armor and helmet, “I suspect that I owe you a debt of thanks as much as I do these others….” The transport suddenly lurched to a stop and Caise’s attentions were snatched away from the ebon-armored woman by a sudden flux of emotion emanating from the female med tech.

The announcement from the driver and the events that followed happened almost too quickly, it seemed. In a matter of moments, the tech who had been attending him had rendered her partner unconscious and explained (in a manner of speaking) that they still had not managed to completely escape this increasingly complex trap that someone had laid for them.

“Move quickly,” the medic hissed as she moved towards the hatch, “The driver is in on it - they will be here any moment! The stars of the core shine even here.”

Caise was on his feet and moving for a bin where he sensed the energies of the adegan crystal in his weapon’s hilt. The soreness in his body as he traversed the transport’s deck, though, told him that as much as he preferred the weapon of his order, if combat became a necessity any time soon, something with better range would be a wiser choice. “Our gear is in that locker, Mr Shadoran,” Caise nodded towards the bin as he stooped and relieved the unconscious medic of the antiquated hold-out blaster he carried.

((Assuming gear is gathered from the bin and distributed…))

Caise buckled his belt around the his waist, quickly assuring that all his gear was where it should be and, most importantly that Rool’s datachip was still in the pouch where he’d secured it earlier and strode for the hatch as it opened.

“You are being set up,” the med tech advised, “but I will not stomach the TDF murdering a member of the Jedi order. Know that there are still supporters of the Republic on this system. Go now - they intended to use the confusion of this attack to ensure your deaths. Instead use it to cover your escape!”

“May the Force be with you,” Caise replied, once more nodding his thanks to the woman, “Tell your superiors whatever you must to cover your involvement.”

Without another word, the padawan stepped through the hatch, the recently procured blaster ready in his grip… “Yo! Blind guy.” Mercury’s voice sounded over his commlink, “This is Mercury rising. We’re coming in hot and ... all your calls are going to be early. Can you give me a … a … whereabouts of the …um …lost …um …red …um …soldierboy ... yeah. Come in please!”

He was happy to hear the fringer’s voice. As his gaze panned across the landscape, Caise retrieved his commlink and lifted it to his lips to reply. “I read you,” he said, “Lost red soldier-boy on Dalroth outskirts, moving for secure location. Hot seems to be the word of the week, Mercury rising… Stand by…”

He released the transmit stud and turned to the others. “We don’t want them exposed,” he noted as his gaze fixed on 13, “You’re the most familiar with this area, I imagine… Any suggestions?”

((OOC: Well, that got longer than I had planned… lots going on though… I say we beat feet away from the transport, of course, as quickly and ‘low-profile’ as possible and rendezvous with Merc and company at a safer spot… edits, backposts, and all that, as necessary))

Olan, are the med techs armed at all? Might not hurt for Caise to snatch a blaster if there's one available... In the condition he's in, charging into combat with a saber (if it becomes necessary) might not be the best idea for Caise.

“…that would be who you’d want to talk about payment,” Sacket wheezed in reply to Sam’s inquiry about the woman, “Her name is Brigit. Brigit Trousdale. At least it is for now, as she is JW’s fiancée. JW, being the man who owns the Hornsilver mine and is basically responsible for all of us being here.”

How wrin bu lai, whai wrin bu jwo,” Dash smirked after learning that the luscious red-head was engaged. “Jus’ my gorram luck,” he groused, “Can’t be hitched to no mi tian gohn fer brains yokel, neither, can she? Nooooo, she’s gotta be doinkin’ th’ ruttin’ local honcho… Ta mah duh!”

The mention of this JW fellow’s ‘connection’ to Parliament had also snatched at Dash’s attention and brought back a momentary rush of paranoia, as well – though Sam was unaware that, at the very mention of the word, his hand had come to rest on the butt of his pistol. “Guess it’s gonna be jus’ another stomp around a ruttin’ dustbowl ‘til we get our cargo dumped an’ c’n burn atmo agin… What’s yer call, Cap?”
