As far as questions that Wyatt or Willow might ask, about the only things I can think of would be questions as to the stability or volatility (whichever way you choose to approach it) of the Avri-Grow in it's 'unmixed' state...

"It's not gonna go boom if we accidentally nudge it with the mule, is it?"

"Anything we should make sure to keep away from it? Don't want to set down a cup of coffee on it and accidentally discovering that java is a catalyst for the boom-boom..."

Things like that... *shrugs*

I think so... *grins*

I was thinking about the somber/serious tone that comes across in his posts, his rather aloof manner, and, of course, the "Alliance perspective" he's got on things, I suppose... I think we're on the same page, anyway.

Out of curiosity, how old a fellow is John do you imagine?

Never mind... found that info on the character thread.

Niiiice post, Loki.

I'm rather liking the fact that John's sort of the "odd man out" (for lack of a more ready and applicable term) where the crew's concerned... avoidance of Trish, personality, attitude, etc... you know what I mean, I think.

Can't wait to see what happens next!

Subject: A couple of notes...

Daniel and Lila are currently the only two characters with any modicum of 'freedom' right now. Daniel because he "works for the Project" and Lila because she has, thus far, been a "willing participant" in the program (not to mention she's Ashcroft's niece).

Lila has what equivocates to a dorm room on Tier Two of the facility, and has access to most of that level (Medical facilities, Programs (basically "school"), Sports Center, and Recreation areas). She has not been off Two Tier unsupervised; however, and is not allowed to leave this tier unescorted.

Daniel has quarters on One Tier and access to most of the facility. Thus far, however, he's not been allowed to leave The MARSH (even on his days off) and, other than the lights of a landing strip he chanced to glimpse out the window of the transport that brought him here, he's never seen the outside of the place).

The rest of you are confined to the SHU on Level K and, most times, are locked in your cells and have your abilities suppressed via various means (medication, suppression fields, psi-dampeners, etc). Your cells are essentially featureless/seamless affairs measuring about 7.5 x 11.5 feet. You have a bunk, a small desk, and a sink/toilet (all built into the walls and immovable). There are no windows or doors to be seen or felt (although you each no that one exists somewhere, otherwise how would they take you out when they came for you?) There is a monitor (think 36 in flat-screen TV) built into one wall on which Project staff may communicate with you from time to time, but most often these monitors are blank or playing some sort of nature video intended to give the illusion of looking outside.

Very few of you know exactly how long you've been here (Daniel and Lila being obvious exceptions) but you know it's been a while. The days you are allowed out of your cells are filled with interviews, medical examinations, and tests of your abilities (whether you agree to them or not)...more often than not you don't remember leaving or re-entering your cells on these days, either.

Part one of two is up.

As I noted in my OOC comment I noticed a couple of discrepancies in the next bit (which involves Disturbance and Download) that I really want to correct before posting. Working on that now.

As to those of you who have been mentioned in the part that's there... feel free to start your posting or quesntioning or whatever if you feel you've got enough to do so.

The MARSH – March 25, 2014 – 14:47:24 GMT

Tier Two, Quarter Four: Recreation

Lila wheeled her way to one of the ten stations in the computer room and, with a somewhat dejected sigh, powered up the terminal. Despite all the other activities available to her, browsing the web, it seemed, was a pastime that coming to this place with Uncle Benton hadn’t diminished. Well, the desire to browse the web, anyway. It wasn’t the same here as it had been back on the farm, though… She wasn’t allowed to have an e-mail account and all of the computers in this room (the only computers she had been allowed to use since her arrival) were wired to a secure mainframe via shielded cable bundles. The mainframe monitored all web searches and addresses, preventing access to any sites that offered e-mail access, pornography, or other “questionable content” (which, it seemed, included all of the forums and web communities to which she belonged)… She frowned, staring at the Google doodle on the screen, as she wondered why she had even bothered to come here in the first place.

Why hadn’t she just fried Uncle Benton and that Vanessa woman when she woke up in the back of that limo with no memory as to how she’d gotten there to begin with? Or, at least, when he dragged her out of that limo and made her show him what she could do? Was it the promise he’d made to her about not having to hide her abilities, anymore? Maybe the one about how this “institute” would help her explore and develop those abilities, allowing them to set her free with them as opposed to keep her trapped by them?

S#!t! She grumbled, turning the computer off without navigating away from the Google page. This is pointless! Why bother?

No, she decided, turning for the door to head back to her room, these past couple of weeks here at Project: Prometheus’ Metahuman Analysis and Research StrongHold (or, simply “The MARSH,” as most of the people she’d met here called it) hadn’t done gone too awful far towards ‘setting her free’ as her uncle had promised. Sure, she’d had the opportunity to explore her abilities already, had even made a bit of progress towards bettering her control over them with the assistance of the scientists and technicians that staffed the place, but none of it had really made her feel free. Instead, as the days wore on, she felt more and more like she was trapped… even more trapped than when she woke up from that accident, years ago, to find that her legs no longer worked… trapped even worse than when her powers first expressed and she didn’t dare tell anyone… and she felt stuck here more than she’d ever felt stuck at her Aunt’s farm…

“I’m tired of being here,” Lila muttered as she rolled back into the small room she’d been assigned. She backed the chair into one corner of the room and slid herself from the seat as her legs ignited and she “walked” the rest of the way to her bed. “And I don’t even know where here is…”

The MARSH, Level K – Special Housing Unit (SHU)/ Administrative Segregation – Tether Station 1

Daniel rubbed his eyes, blinked in the dim glow emitted by the bank of monitors before him, and stifled a yawn. His first week here at The MARSH had been somewhat exciting, he had to admit. There had been almost a thrill when he’d first arrived and discovered that he wasn’t as alone in the world as he once had thought… that there were people out there who actually understood the ‘societal predicament’ that one with ‘metahuman abilities’ so often found oneself in, that there were others like him on Earth, and that some of them, like him, had no clue that they weren’t alone. The most exciting part, though, was that, following his initial interview and the extensive battery of tests, his job was going to be to ‘help’ some of these others by helping Project: Prometheus ‘identify and locate’ them by becoming what they called a Tether.

It had been explained to him that not all metas had the control over their abilities that he had and that there were still others who had that sort of control but, still, misused those abilities to such an extent that they were as ‘dangerous to themselves and the world’ as those who had no control. Project: Prometheus had begun recruiting Psionics almost immediately upon its founding near the end of 2012 in the hopes that the ‘power sets’ possessed by the psions would be useful in helping to control the uncontrollable and, as it turned out, they were correct. Project: Prometheus’ Tethers were metahumans like Daniel – psions – whom had been utilized by the project from the very beginning and had been instrumental in not only locating other metas but, in many cases, dampening or controlling the abilities of those they found, thereby, facilitating safe transport to facilities like this one where they could be analyzed and assisted in the safe and proper uses of their powers. So, after some sessions with other Tethers in which they were instructed on how to “properly and humanely” take control of another meta, it was with some disappointment that Daniel found himself assigned to what equivocated (in his mind, anyway) to babysitting duty here in the wards as opposed to being placed on an Acquisition Unit. He’d only been “officially on the job” for a little less than a week, of course, so it could be that it would get better but, as it stood, now, being a Tether wasn’t exciting at all. In fact, he found it more than a little depressing… especially here in the SHU where his charges were shuttered away in featureless, high-security cells “for their own safety and the safety of others” and he had nothing to do but monitor those charges and “shut them down” if they managed to somehow defeat the security measures that had been built into their chambers… He didn’t feel like he was helping them, most times. He felt like a prison guard.

“Maybe it’ll get better,” Daniel breathed, leaning back in his chair and, now, allowing himself to actually look at the monitors before him, “and, if it doesn’t, I guess, I can always find another job. Until then…”

The first monitor displayed the overly bright interior of K-4 and, overlaid on the screen, a brief synopsis of that cell’s current occupant:
Ref#:00027; “Penumbra”; A3; Elemental/Kinetic.; AdSeg. K-4

The young woman in K-4 was exactly where she’d been the last time Daniel had seen her, wedged into one corner of her cell, knees pulled tightly to her chest, and her eyes pressed to those knees and her hair spilling forward to try and shield herself from the lights that never went out.

Daniel frowned. He didn’t really want to tap her thoughts. They’d be the same as last time, he was sure, and he wasn’t keen on starting his shift with that kind of darkness… He did it anway… it was his job, after all…

Level K – Special Housing Unit (SHU)/ Administrative Segregation – Unit: K-4

It was just like that time.. the smells .. needles pricking into her skin.. It was the same..

Aly had woken up yet again in the hospital with the doctor leering down at her, murmuring under his breath. She knew what was coming, she knew that the sorrow filled eyes of her family was simply a gimmick and wasn’t real. She also knew that the questions would start – Questions that she couldn’t answer truthfully,
“Alyeria, you’ve been here twice this week with various fractures to your arms and legs.. Why?” She had shrugged the answer off, like normal, she thought as she glared at her family crowded around her bed,
“Fell down some stairs” Was all she offered and turned away to glance out the window.
“A fall would not cause such breaking Alyeria. Tell me what happened.” A demand, also like normal she duly noted. Murmuring under her breath she feigned exhaustion as she brought the scratchy blanket over her head trying to block out the world around her. Her limbs hurt, she could barely move her legs without pricks of pain making themselves known to her. She would refuse however, to show her father – the reason she was here to begin with – that she was indeed in pain. She had already passed up the offer of painkillers as that would make things worse when she was released later.. She never stayed the allotted time, her father always had her pulled out and released into their oh-so-loving care. She inwardly scoffed at the thought and physically cringed feeling someone’s fingers on her,
“Don’t touch me!” She hadn’t meant to yell, she knew not to yell. But it hurt to be touched, she froze however hearing her father’s gruff voice attempting to soothe her anxiety. She would be back later that night she was sure.

Yes.. it was the same.. The questions she didn’t want to answer.. The feeling of being trapped had finally caught up to her once again.

It was more than a feeling, this time, though. She was trapped, good and tight. There wasn’t even the slightest shadow in this tiny room where she’d spent most of the past two weeks… not a single place to escape from the prying eyes and probing fingers and stabbing needles and thoughts that weren’t her own… Yes. She was trapped inside and outside herself all at once… and she hated it… and, even though she’d tried over and over again (and would likely try some more), she couldn’t find a way out.

“Please,” she whimpered/whispered into the blinding nothing that surrounded her, “just… just turn out the lights… just… for a minute…”

Tether 1

Daniel Henson sighed as he pushed the will to sleep (or at least not see the light) into Penumbra’s mind and let his gaze pan to the next monitor:

Ref#:13409; “Radiance”; A3; Dynamo; AdSeg. K-8

This unit and the young woman that occupied it were the negative image of Penumbra’s… or would “the positive image” be more appropriate? Where K-4 was perpetually bombarded with light this, one was shrouded in constant darkness, and, where “Penumbra” exhibited gloom and depression, “Radiance” was all light and positivity. Of course, that didn’t mean that the little, goth girl was any more happy to be here that Penumbra was – had that been the case, she wouldn’t be here in the SHU to begin with – but she wasn’t about to let her ‘captivity’ get her down. She was perkily positive that she’d make her way out of this place before too much longer…

Daniel liked that about her… Always peppy and plucky, even when the techs came down to retrieve her and take her off for more tests… He hoped her positivity paid off and she did manage to put the SHU behind her. “Hell,” he managed a grin as he shifted his attentions to the next monitor without bothering to push Radiance, at all, “I’d help her, if I could.”

((OOC: okay... part one of two, here... As I said, it got lengthy and, as I was re-reading before posting, I noticed I need some edits in the next section... Making those edits, now, and should have the next part posted before much longer.))

Well, to be honest, I haven't delved that deeply into the 'vows' specific to the Sifu's order buuuuut, if I vaguely follow the paths laid out by the martial monks of Shaolin or whatever, I'd imagine there's a vow of celibacy involved somewhere along the lines...

...hey... wait a minute... It actually looks like Buddhist monks take a vow to 'refrain from sexual misconduct' not necessarily abstain from sex all together... interesting...

...anyway, vows and such aside, I don't imagine that our little monk has really experienced anything sexual in his life beyond a kiss. Spent a lot of his early years as little more than a 'trained-dog' for Chap (and getting his pit-bull bedded wasn't high on Chap's list of priorities). Following his escape from Hoskins, Fu Sheng likely didn't have the social graces needed to 'win over a girl' (not that he was really looking, at the time) and was more concerned with finding his way back home or, at least, finding his family. Then there was the monastery... then the orphanage... *shrugs* Vow of celibacy? Not that I'm aware of... Virgin? Absolutely.

Firstly, to echo what the others have already said where posts are concerned - a post doesn't have to be super lengthy to be a good read (despite the fact that some of our posts do tend to wind up on the longer side). It's the quality of the post that matters as opposed to the 'quantity,' after all, and, IMO, everyone involved, here, has put out some quality posting regardless of length.

Characters! Yay! Entirely too many hot chicks in this group... makes it very distracting... but I looooove it!

The Dew Drop Inn, Beaumonde

The trip from Deadwood to Beaumonde had been blessedly uneventful aside from the occasional bouts of worry amongst the farmers – Della, Del-Lar, and Jake – with whom he had travelled and a rather tense couple of hours in which the Haphazard had been boarded and searched for contraband by Federal Marshalls. The Feds hadn’t found anything, of course, but their visit had served to make his friends from the farmers’ guild all the more nervous until Fu Sheng had explained that the visit had provided him with more than a little insight into what he might expect from Alliance agencies should their return trip meet with similar delays. The Kirbys, too, had offered some of their own input in regards to those sorts of situations and the little monk had gratefully accepted them. The remainder of the trip consisted of little more than his daily meditations, assisting where he could with the day-to-day chores aboard the tiny ship, and entertaining the questions of Silas and Bronwyn Kirby’s son, Trip. Yes, all in all, an uneventful and even pleasant trip that, at its end, had left Fu Sheng with more than a little hope that the return trip, with Buddha’s blessing, would go just as smoothly.

Two days later, Fu Sheng still held this hope as he – behind Della, Del-Lar, and Jake – entered an establishment which the locals referred to as ‘The Double D’ to meet the captain of a ship that, it was assured, could meet the requirements of the Guild’s contract. “Quite… rustic,” the little monk noted with a smile, pausing for a moment just inside the threshold to survey the place with a passing glance. He followed along, then, as Jake led them across the tavern to where this captain, along with a delegation of his crew and, curiously enough, a sheriff, awaited them.

There was no hesitation or sense of tension from Jake or the rest in regards to the lawman’s presence, even as greetings – the lovely Asian woman accompanying the captain was apparently the liaison for a previous interaction with this crew – and introductions were made…

“… and this here’s Fu Sheng…”

Ah mi tah Fo, (Buddha bless you),” he offered with a smile and a bow to each (and a handshake where expected), then tried to make himself unobtrusive as drinks were ordered and small-talk made as the farmers maneuvered into putting the offer on the table.

After some initial spluttering on Della’s part, a rebuke for that offense from Jake, and some soothing words from Willow (which had served to broaden the monk’s own smile a fraction, as well), things continued in a more harmonious manner…

“We want to ship 5 tanks of liquid Avri-Grow to Deadwood,” Della continued, more evenly, now, despite his gaze ticking a bit suspiciously toward the sheriff as he said the next; “Now that’s illegal, by Alliance law that is.”

Sheriff Justice snorted, “Don’t worry about me son. I take care of my people and town and that keeps me plenty busy without keep up with purple belly nonsense.”

Fu Sheng’s smile flickered at that and he nodded faintly at the man’s wisdom.

Della continued on to explain the legalities of the purchase, use, and transport of the Avri-Grow that the Guild sought to smuggle back to Deadwood. Del-Lar, in turn, offered an unneeded explanation as to exactly why transport of the stuff was illegal and what the value of it might be on the black market before Jake assumed the lead, once more.

"…that is why we turn to you Captain Wyatt and Miss Willow. You have done us rightly and we know you won’t play that way against us.” Jake said. “So you won’t get into trouble, we arranged to transport a bunch of foodstuffs to an orphanage nearby. Fu Sheng is here as a representative from the orphanage.”

Fu Sheng stood and, once again, offered each a smile and a bow, this time addressing them properly. “Sung Chuan Zung (Captain Sung)…”

…an honorable man… Fu Sheng sensed, meeting Wyatt’s shadowed and steeled gaze, …but harboring a great pain…

“…Takahara Shao Jeh (Miss Takahara)…”

In everything… above all else… love He nearly blushed when he met Willow’s gaze, directly, but, in that same flickering of an instant, knew how to define the undefinable bit of her beauty that Jake and Della and Del-Lar had mooned over in preparing Fu Sheng for the meeting…

“…Zhao Shao Jeh…”

…Like her captain, the whip of a pilot hid something behind her outer demeanor, though, hers was notably more ‘plucky’ than Wyatt’s, and Fu Sheng couldn’t help but feel a strange kinship to the woman when he looked at her. She was who she was, he sensed, no betrayal of that from her at all, but, there was a single word that he felt, deep in her, somewhere hidden... and he understood when he heard it… …Shadow…

“…Buddha’s blessings upon you all. I am honored to make the acquaintance of such right-minded spirits.

As Jake Shian Shen has already said, I am Cheung Fu Sheng, a disciple of the Zhi Yi Quan… the Order of the Dispersing Fist. We are an order of… ah… I’m sorry,” still smiling, the little monk bowed apologetically, “A lesson on my order’s history is beside the point. Suffice it to say that, through my order, Buddha’s grace has had me serving as a… physical education instructor at the Moriah Gulch Orphanage on Deadwood these past years…”

“He teaches them kids kung fu,” Della interjected, nodding over the rim of his mug.

“He teaches ‘em more than that,” Jake added, swatting at Della, “Now shush. You’re bein’ rude.”

“Jake Shian Shen (Mister Jake),” Fu Sheng continued, not acknowledging the compliments from the farmers, “and the others near us have been more than gracious… more than charitable… to the orphanage over those years and, as such, Buddha’s wisdom has led me to repay some of their kindnesses by offering my services in this venture. Helping to secret a shipment home that will surely benefit us all in the end is the least I might do…”

“We will pack the food crates around the tanks, label the tanks as corn syrup – even put a false top on it in case someone wants a taste.” Della explains, then, “You take the long way around so there won’t be much traffic. In case you do get inspected, Fu Sheng here will come with you to assure the goods are legit.”

“I assure you, Sung Chuan Zung,” Fu Sheng added, “I will be as unobtrusive as I can while aboard your ship and, of course, will gladly offer my assistance wherever you might find it useful.”

“We are offering 2,500 credits up front if you do this and another 5,000 when you land on Deadwood with goods intact.” Del-Lar pipes up. “Plus we will fuel you before you leave here and after when you on Deadwood. “

((OOC: Minor liberties taken with NPC dialogue and such, perhaps some with the “senses” that Fu Sheng gets from Wyatt, Willow, and Tess? If there are fixes needed, let me know… Stopping there for now… Room for interjection/interaction throughout, of course.))

Ody - nope, I don't imagine that Fu Sheng would have a problem, at all, in joining Willow and Asher in their "morning exercises"... I figure such a thing is more than a small part of the monk's daily routine, anyway, and I don't imagine he'd object to having company (or asking to join in with Willow and the Kid as the case may be).

Anyhoo... weekend got away from me but am working up my post, now. Should have it ready in the next little bit.

...I sort of remember the US version (and the fact that it wasn't that great)... Never realized until this post, though, that it was adapted from a UK program. Interesting... Might have to look into that and see if I can find them, anywhere. US versions/adaptations of UK shows usually suck by comparison (see "The Office", "Coupling", et al) so I'd imagine I might actually enjoy Red Dwarf in it's "original presentation".

Thanks Loki!
