Topic: Auguries of Destruction - The Clock Tower
Subject: Breaking? I like breaking things!

There was something very wrong with this town. He could feel it… smell it… taste it on the air that pressed against him as he swept out of the station and onto the streets of Altin. Bas paused for a moment and, while his eyes panned across the empty and damaged town that spread out before him, his nostrils flared as he sniffed at the atmosphere and sampled the strangely tainted essence that seemed to pervade in the Autumn night air.

Winter is coming, he told himself as he surveyed the place, taking particular notice of the seemingly random pock-marks of destruction and the clock tower in the distance that refused to chime the hour…

The summer season, it seemed, had come to a somehow indifferent end, giving way to the autumn months earlier than what might seem normal to those who kept track of such things. However unusual it may appear though, most would simply dismiss it as a simple meteorological anomaly. Some would curse the change and some would welcome it but, in the end, the vast majority would acknowledge the inevitability of it and go on about their lives having missed the deeper meaning of Nature’s change in mood.

An old shaman had taken him in for a time and had explained the seasons to him…made him clearly understand that, somehow, that the World was readying itself for the dying that was to come…and that, while the seasons of the Reckoning were longer than the seasons of the year, all things considered, the cycles were the same and could be defined in identical fashion – Spring sees the birthing of the new and the growing begins, then Summer emerges to take hold of the burgeoning growth and urges the new life on to the height of its power. Soon thereafter, Autumn begins to usurp the land and all that which had flourished begins to diminish, dwindling towards the dying time until, finally, the death-cold fingers of Winter layer the dead things with crystalline blankets until it comes time for the cycle to begin anew.

“A time of changing,” Bas muttered as his gaze swept over the city. An insistent breeze blew against him, trying to urge him back into the station as he defiantly stalked farther out into the street. He crouched beside one of the blackened heaps of rubble that dotted the place and resurveyed the city, fingers dipping to pluck a small stone from between his boots as he breathed deeply of the odors carried on that zephyr. “Changing,” he whispered as he stood and hurled the stone at the distant clock tower, “and preparing to die.”

…Once more on his feet, Bas tore his lupine eyes away from their scan of Altin, turned them curiously to the faint sliver of a moon that hung in the dead sky, and then strode off in the direction Eve had gone. He caught sight of her, again, not far away, and watched her for a long moment before he allowed himself to catch up to her. The woman’s anxiousness and apparent need to keep moving had initially…instinctually… caused him to label her a rabbit but, given the fact that she had met his gaze without hesitation just a while a go and as he watched her now, walking purposefully towards a building designated as The Blue House Inn by it’s off kilter sign, Bas decided that Eve was surely more predator than prey. She moved like a predator, alert and confident but, at the same time, something in the way she walked indicated that the confidence there was something all together new for the woman with the blood-colored hair.

He whispered to a stop a few feet from her, glanced back the way he had come to check the position and condition of the others, and then returned to watching her in silence as she inspects the boarded portals of the Blue House Inn… “Looking for a way in,” he asks rhetorically, that enigmatic ghost-smile curling the corners of his mouth.

((OOC: Okay… not sure what exactly may apply up there but Perception, Tracking, or Supernatural Senses checks as Bas surveys the town please… Hunter than he is, Bas’ll be looking, sniffing, and feeling for anything useful, out of the ordinary, etc… … also, backposts and such as needed for keeping up the earlier convo with Guin… Bas won’t be trying to kill her if she’s tagging along at his heels or anything… I promise. ))

Subject: Okay! Now that's frigged up, lady!

"Rosie's a sweet kid but just a little bit on the random side... Anyway, Miss Rosa, you said there was much we had to discuss... where did you want to start?"

Yeah, that's right, Smoke sniped as Alex settled into a chair across from Penelope, go ahead and ignore me...

I'm not ignoring you, sweetheart, Alex thought back, trying really hard not to succumb to his habit of looking at her even when they were just mentally conversing, I'm just trying to not look like I'm crazy in front of the potential client... don't hang yourself on that string...

"...Think nothing of it, corazon," the gorgeous Iberian woman smiled, "and you must call me Penelope..."

"Penelope," Alex nodded, returning the smile.

..."Now, as to why I've come," Penelope's hand disappeared into a coat pocket and came back out with a long, golden chain draped over her slender fingers and from the end of that chain dangled an Azazelite pendant. The damnable thing hung in the air between them for a long moment before she released her grip on the chain and let it fall to the table. "I presume that you know what this is?"

Whatever Alex had been expecting from this woman up until this point - cheating husband, insurance investigation, missing person, whatever - he sure as hell hadn't expected this. As soon as that amulet had appeared, though, his essence, his suspicions, and his anger flared with equal intensity. The warm, welcoming (and somewhat smitten) smile disappeared from his face instantly. His jaw tightened along with his fists and his already bloodshot eyes may have even reddened all the more, narrowing to apprehensive slits as they watched the pendant fall. The faint thunk that it made as it hit the dust-layered surface of the table was like a gunshot and the near-inaudible sound made by the chain as it curled around the pendant was the threatening hiss of a serpent to his ears. He glared at the thing for a moment before his gray eyes ticked towards the picture frame that sat just a few inches away - the one that held his favorite photo of Emily in her wedding dress.

His left hand unclenched with a bit of coaxing, his thumb absently turning the wedding ring he still wore as the hand lifted to his mouth and the fingers splayed out to rub thoughtfully at his heavily stubbled jaw. His right hand also relaxed into less than a fist as it sought out a cigarette from within a shirt pocket. The right hand changed places with the left, then, the right tucking the cigarette into the corner of his mouth as the left fished his lighter out of his coat. He rose from his seat, then, lighting the cigarette and flicking a dubious glance in Smoke's direction...

Think she's one of Joe's? he wondered in her direction.

Oh, now you want my opinion? the bast sighed, rolling onto her belly, still toying with the ball of twine. No, love, she answered, You'd have known that yourself if you bothered to actually look at the woman as opposed to simply ogling her.

His gaze tracked back to Em's picture as he sucked a long drag from the cigarette. The lighter disappeared back into the pocket it had come from and his left hand reached out to snatch the long-hated symbol of Azazel's cult out of Em's proximity. His right hand removed the cigarette from his mouth as his eyes reluctantly tore away from his wife's photo, regarded the pendant for a moment, and then fixed on Penelope.

Her aura, now that his sudden focus allowed him to see beyond her exotic beauty, shone with a light that only the Gifted presented and, with the possibility of her being an undercover plant for Joe having been dismissed, that could mean only a handful of other reasons that Penelope Rosa had decided to pay him a visit... Either I just invited a Zazy into my own damn house, he grumbled inwardly, finally exhaling a cloud of smoke towards the ceiling, or this lady's in some serious s**t.

His mouth was dry. The cigarette didn't help. The flask in his hip pocket was screaming for attention... Too bad it's empty.

There's a bottle in the kitchen.

Shut up.

...He took another puff of the smoke, continuing to study Penelope with new eyes for a moment.

"Where'd you get this?" he finally managed to ask.

...and plenty tough enough.

Here's the starts of a character sheet for Joe Kelly. Haven't come anywhere near spending all his points, yet, and figured I'd let gboy polish this off and/or completely revamp as he sees fit.

Joe Kelly

Concept: Reluctant Hero (at least for the purposes of this story... I don't imagine Joe is going to want to believe in magic and immortals and such... and he sure isn't gonna be happy about getting wrapped up in a "war" between gifted and supernaturals...)

I kind of think that the baddies should be a bit more powerful than the heroes, myself. Katul is the "head" of an entire Cult, after all... he's got numbers and, most likely, the supernatural wherewithall to easily hand, at least Alex, his butt in a one on one show down... Alvaro is an immortal with prejudices carried over through centuries from the Inquisition... the fact that he was an inquisitor before becoming cursed surely hasn't made him an easy foe... And Alice... welllllll... I just can't wait to see what Alice might be like (I keep seeing that girl crawling out of the well in "The Ring" when I try to imagine it, though... I don' have a clue as to why...)

Yak!Yak!Yak! Shaddap, Eol!

Anyway, as to character sheets...I think this is the last update of the character sheet I had for Alex where Vesper's game was concerned... Not sure that it hasn't been slightly tweaked since that point to account for the "time elapsed" from then, however.

Alex Sharpe
Concept: Survivor
Association: Wicce
+2 on all defensive Invocation Tasks. -2 penalty to dismissal applies to those using Magic to attack the Wicce. Must take Rituals (Wicce) and Humanities (Wicce Theology) Skills.

Character type: Gifted

This gets better and better with every single post and the possibilities as to where this story goes are just infinite if you ask me. You ladies are all fantastic and I've just gotta gush about how glad I am that we've managed to pull this whole thing out of "fizzled games" and "half done" characters to come up with this... soooo.... *gushgushgush* And, also, HUGE thanks to all of you for sparking my muse and imagination again.

Now, I'm done being mooshy for a minute, I guess... on to villainizing and character sheets and all that business...

First: Do we want to consolidate all the PC and NPC character sheets (or at least summaries of them) in the Q&A for mutual reference purposes or would you all prefer to keep that business in the PM realm or some other venue?

Second: Nothing from gboy as Joe Kelly, yet, and the game could use a post or two from him to get him involved in the story a bit more... I'm not opposed to whipping a post or two up until gboy can get into the flow and whatnot... would love for him to get involved, though...

Third: I foresee Alex developing/changing and almost certainly becoming more powerful as a result of what our characters are going to be up against (and, likely, with the help of his immortal lady friends) - it's that or die, right? Also, I can see maybe, possibly, quite necessarily nudging Janelle more towards 'awareness' of her gift... we might need to confab on all of that character development stuff a bit, as well, eh?

Okay... random thoughts have been sprung on the Universe... let's see where they go now that they're out there.

Okay... now, I've gotta go and try to come up with something comparable... ... Of course, I may need to wait for Nimu, eh?

“What’m I doin’ here,” Crulgrin muttered into the sleeve of his tunic and he wiped the foam of yet another tankardful of Granitegut Stout from his whiskers, “Come out o’ the Rvisthorn an’ put me arse on the line… an’ fer what… a weddin’?”

He watched, breath held, and face still buried in his sleeve as Jamdock Burrowfoot stomped past him again. Once the Gemhound had disappeared into the thick of the wedding crowd, Crulgrin let his breath go in a sigh of relief. “Aye,” he shook his shaggy, black head slowly and tossed back the tankard once more, draining what remained of the dark, bitter brew into both mouth and beard, “gotta be fargin’ off me boulder ta’ve even thinked this were a good ideer.”

Hoping that Jamdock would stay to himself and not so much as look his way, again, turned and waved for his tankard to be refilled. Crulgrin couldn’t have declined this invitation even if he had wanted to and he knew it. No self-respecting Khord would pass up the chance to attend a wedding and revel in the expansion of the clan… even if the exact nature of that familiar relationship was so convoluted that it scarcely related you to the bride or groom… Why, ye might as well shave of yer beard, move ‘bove ground, and pretend yer a Syl, then, mightn’t ye? It didn’t matter if his being here wasn’t the safest of things to do, either. He’d already shamed himself enough by having fallen in with the wrong sort and, as a result, throwing away a fine career as a caver and advanced scout for the King’s Tunnelers… it hadn’t been his fault entirely, of course, a false promise or two from some Sendrian tall-folk had devolved into a lie that had turned into a threat against Shadebeard’s family and, finally, lead him into his current life as little more than a thief and gem-smuggler… Kharox bless me so’s no one finds out… …who hid his deeds by pretending to be a simple laborer at the…

“Hey Crully, old boy! How’re things over at the refinery? You still work there, right?”

Crulgrin flinched when Kretarund grabbed hold of him and nearly spilled the entire contents of his freshly refilled brew on the both of them. Oh, by the Gods o’ Earth an’ Stone, I’m catched, he thought at first. Then his wide, blinking eyes registered that it was the groom who had apprehended him and not that Burrowfoot bloke, and his look of shock quickly transformed into a broad smile.

“Aye,” Crulgrin snorted, sucking the foam from the top of his brew, “aye, the refin’ry! Things’re good, Kreta-me-boy! Things’re good! Heh heh… Congratulations, boy-o!”

The gem-smuggler, although happy for the young Khord, was somehow relieved when the bridegroom was accosted by another party-guest and dragged away from what, likely, would’ve been a conversation strewn with half-truths and bald-faced lies to which he’d rather not subject family – no matter how distant – anyway. “Khamaruz’s frosty stones but I jest pessed meself,” he sighed trying to fade back into the shadows a bit as he nursed his mug… “What’m I doin’ here?”

He didn't, did he?

Let's chalk that one up to the following:

  1. He was practically drooling on his shoes when the comment was made and it likely went "in one ear and out the other"

  2. Rosie showed up with her ward in hand at about the same time and threw Alex's train of thought even farther off it's tracks than it usually is

  3. and
  4. I'm going on the assumption that Alex has no idea that Penelope is even the slightest bit Gifted (let alone an immortal) and, as such, is trying to 'tune Smoke out' for the moment so he doesn't appear to be the crazy guy that talks to his cat at random.

The way the woman scrutinized him before stepping across the threshold, for some reason, made Alex feel as if he had answered the door naked. It wasn't necessarily a bad feeling - scarcely even uncomfortable - but, whatever the sensation might have been, he felt a bit exposed under the lovely woman's gaze. He couldn't take his eyes off of her, either, as she paused just inside the door and rather curiously surveyed the shop before facing him again and offering her hand.

"Alexander Sharpe, I presume? I am Penelope Rosa and there is much we need to speak of."

Damn... Even her voice is beautiful! He blinked, then - probably more than once - and realized that he hadn't even taken the proffered hand yet. Get it together, Alex! You've seen pretty girls before, he chastised himself, offering another sheepish smile as he took her hand and nodded, preparing a reply. Before he could manage to get the first word past his lips, though, Janelle appeared - a roll of tape in one hand and one of her "wards" in the other.

"Um, excuse me," she said, slipping nonchalantly by Alex and Penelope to affix her charm to the door.

"There," Janelle said, apparently satisfied with her placement of the paper.

Alex's smile was half-amused and half-curious, one brow spiked high behind the tousled mess of hair that had fallen over his forehead, as he glanced first at the ward Janelle had just affixed to the door, then at the one still wrapped around his watch, and, finally, almost apologetically, at the lovely Miss Rosa.

"Um... by the way," Janelle spoke again, fixing him with a curious gaze, before Alex could get any words of explanation or apology out, "Why didn't you tell me you were a magician as well as a PI?"

Magician? Alex seemed to be blinking and shaking cobwebs from his head a lot today. What?... Oh... Right... the shop...

"Excuse me, Miss Rosa," he grinned apologetically to the visitor and, with a sweeping gesture that indicated any number of chairs in the shop, "Come on in and have a seat. I'll be right with you."

Draping an arm around Janelle's shoulders, Alex gave her a gentle squeeze and began to walk her back through the shop towards the kitchen hallway. "I'm no magician, Rosie. You remember me telling you about Emily, right," he asked as the two of them navigated around the bookcases and past the counter. "Well, most all of this stuff is... was hers. This place was her dream, I guess... Kind of a bookstore and supply shop for magicians, y'know?

I'm not sure I really understand the half of it, myself," he bluffed, hoping that she'd be satisfied with the answer for the time being, "Just haven't had the heart to get rid of any of it, I guess.

Listen," he smiled warmly as they made their way down the hallway to the kitchen, "this lady looks like she might be a potential client, so I need to go and talk to her for a minute but, if you want, I'll give you the grand tour once I've got her taken care of, all right?"

((OOC: Assuming that Rosie's good with all of that and Alex get's back to the shop afterwards... Mebbe he asked her to make some coffee by way of occupying her??? Up to you... ))

A few moments later, Alex reemerged from the hallway and made his way to where Penelope was waiting. "Sorry about that," he said again, flicking a glance over his shoulder as if to ensure that Janelle was still occupied, before regarding the woman, "Rosie's a sweet kid but just a little bit on the random side... Anyway, Miss Rosa, you said there was much we had to discuss... where did you want to start?"

And thank you, Ayrn, for the nudge...

Got bogged down with this one after Loki dropped and have been wrestling with a mild case of writer's block where handling his departure from the game is concerned. I do, however, think I've got it figured out and am in the midst of wrapping up a post to get us going again. I had hopped to have it ready to go by this evening but, with as busy as work has been, today, haven't been able to steal the writing time I had anticipated... late tonight or early tomorrow morning, though, for sure.

Appreciate the patience, gang.

...I was thinking it was probably a Tuesday, myself. Not sure why, really, but that's the day I had in mind.

Cooked the Zazy on Friday or Saturday... Cops found the body on Sunday or Monday... Joe stopped by at 3 a.m. Tuesday after hanging on to that pendant for a while and going; "Y'know? Maybe Al knows somethin' about this..."

Provoke, maybe. But challenge? I'm crazy. Not stupid.

Loved the post... working up a reply, now...

Hmmm... strangely enough, that feels better!

Okay, just a short one from Bas, this go 'round by way of replying to Guin and furthering our little group into the town... I hesitate to go too far beyond the station w/out Rer's next but am happy to run with the convos and "team building". ...er... I mean...
