Malius was ready as the party led now by Geim approached the edge of the spoiled diseased ground surrounding and leading to the tree. One look at the ground they would have to cover to reach said tree was not to the Syl’s liking but forward he would follow the rest.
With his bow ready, an arrow nocked Malius positioned himself close to the rear of the party to provide ranged cover. But even before the second member of the party entered Geim was attacked!!.
Branches from the trees like whips attacked the dwarf, sending the red fluid of the diseased muddy waters spraying in all directions and on the front line companions.
Even before Malius could acquire one of the vines as a target, Thondrek, having had prepared a spell released it at the trees appendices. The Khords spell hit one of them with a fiery stone that should’ve scorched it as it came, but the branch seemed unaffected, even by the heat of the projectile.
As if the sudden animation of the white willow wasn’t enough, they found themselves in the middle of a pandemonium of events; Wolf as if directly tied to the tree had sunk to his knees clasping his head. The warrior screamed a low roar of pain that trembled louder than any Sylvari war cry had ever meant to be but no war cry was this was. It was a deep rumble of disturbance that seemed to come from the forest itself, a cry of deep pain.
This is not good Malius thought to himself preparing to launch his arrow at the tree, But his gaze was distracted towards the bushes on the eastside of the clearing as a familiar looking lizard had appeared as if summoned. In fact, it seemed to the Ranger a very familiar one, with traces of wounds, both arrow and sword that were closing up as it approached. It roared a silent challenge and slowly stepped onto the grass a second lizard, partner to the first, appeared to the west and was clearly closing on the party also.
Target set, for the moment the tree forgotten, Malius launched his arrow at the once wounded lizard hoping it had not fully healed from its previous wounds......

Croaker had not really said much of anything since he had replied to MDK about who was in charge. His hand on the SMG the whole time the big Nomad knew that the assassin was aware of the fact that 1 or more guns were surely pointed at him.
Though MDK had not acknowledged that fact out loud Croaker could tell by his posture that should things go down badly, it would be a matter of who was fastest in the end. Instead Spiff brought the semi standoff between the two to a head with his next words.
"So, Mr. Corporate Assassin. Does that mean you kill people for the Megacorps, or that you kill people in the Megacorps? Before you answer though, I should probably warn you that the former means we'll have to shoot you, while the latter means you'll be of great use."
Croaker’s heart stopped, his finger tightened on the trigger, his smart link targeting reticule positioned itself on MDK’s face......
“If you know so much about me then you already know the answer, if I worked for the Corps then I wouldn’t be here. I hate the Megacorps and I am here because I was told someone needed some help sticking it to them but good. So can we stop the f**king bulls**t and get down to business or should I just walk now?”
Croaker watched as the man finished his reply, turned his attention to the Nomad and raised an eyebrow as if waiting for Croaker on the decision.
Croaker exhaled, forced his heart to restart, and took a leap of faith, removing his hand from under the table. Placing both elbows on its wood surface, he interlocked his fingers and spoke.
“Ok thanks to Jack we have a target locale, now we need a plan to get at it, here’s what I think. With it only having a single road in and out it will be damn near impossible to approach that way. Even if its not electro monitored with cams and motion sensors there are sure to be guards stationed at some point on it. Seeing as how both I and Bulls Eye can pilot both Helicopters and Vertical thrust aircraft we avoid the road and come in from behind the target by air using an AV-4 or something close to it. If no 4 we get a hold of a helo and go in that. Now assuming we get such air transport we hung the ground using nape of the earth technique and pop up hopefully out of nowhere dead center of the target. We then land or repel down onto the target building and hit them fast and hard.”
A slight pause to catch his breath and take a drink from his glass and he continued.
“Now of course my plan hinges on having an AV-4, a helo or some other air transport and that’s where you come in Spiff, between you and Jack if anyone can get us such a transport its you and he. So tables open, Spiff any chance of getting one.”
With the basic’s of his plan on the table he awaited the others thoughts and suggestions.

Al you say the potion/oil needs to be rubbed onto the Tree how about if the potion was injected directly into the Tree, would that not work also.
It would have added extra strength perhaps of being in the tree's 'bloodstream' so to speak.

Topic: A few questions for 2nd edition DMs
Subject: MY Thoughts
Remember Vorrioch, before you read this post that the opinions expressed below are mine and that other people may view things differently..........
1. A lot of the spells presented in the PHB aren’t exactly balanced. This one really came to my attention about a week ago when I was stating up a spell-using enemy of the party. A lot of the spells restricted from use in underground encounters seem particularly overpowered (e.g. Call Lightning) … presumably because the writers assumed they’d only ever be used in the one or two random encounters on the way to the adventurers’ latest dungeon crawl. As written, a lot of low level spells also don’t give saves that IMHO really should (Silence 15’ radius and Color Spray- I’m looking at you).
The way I handle this is to check if the creature or object has any form of magical resistance, if it does I then allow it a saving throw vs. such spells at the LvL of the resistance itself. Example: A creature with a 25% magical resistance would get a roll of a 5 or less on a D 20 to resist, 50% a roll of 10 or less and so on. 100% of course means of course no effect but very rarely do you find a lower HD monster with a high resistance. If the creature has no Magical Resistance then the spell effects them as stated.
2. If a Cleric turns undead to force them to retreat and then uses ranged weapons to fire on the undead while they’re moving away then is the enchantment broken? All the PHB says is that turned undead are compelled to retreat from the caster. My first inclination was just to say “yes” (for the same reason that I wouldn’t let undead with bows fire on the party once they’d been turned) but I’d be curious to see how other DMs have handled this one?
The Undead are forced to flee because of the Priests belief in his God which depending on how high LvL he is decides the spells reaction, whether to turn or just destroy. Also as you asked above the Undead do get a semi saving throw vs. the ability and thats the Priests LvL itself and then if failed they run away. So I say NO as they are fleeing if the party attacks with long or short range weapons the spell is not broken, the Undead keep trying to run as long as the ability lasts no matter what is done to them.
3. I’ve been looking over the “overbearing” rules in the PHB. Do you allow armor to count against grappling attacks? As wearing a set of full plate would, if anything, unbalance a character I can’t think of a good reason why it should give any sort of protection against being grappled. But if it doesn’t then overbearing suddenly becomes an all-too deadly tactic both for swarm monsters (10 orcs making an overbearing attack against a 5th level fighter) or for PCs to use against more powerful adversaries (5 party members grappling that one 12th level enemy). Neither of which really fit the fantasy genre particularly well.
To me if the character is up and moving his armor class counts for any type of attack be it Ranged, Melee, or Hand to Hand. Now if he is stunned, paralyzed, or some such then no his AC does not count in hand to hand but still counts vs. Long and Melee with minuses.
It all really depends on the current status of the character, if he is out cold, lying in the middle of a cleared area and his opponent is right next to him the bad guy gets +’s to Hit.
Each combat is different and so is each DM’s ruling the bottom line of AD&D, at least to me, is not to follow the rules religiously but to follow them to make the game fun for both you as DM and for the players as the characters. The rules as stated in the first few pages are to be used as a GUIDELINE to help solve disputes not to be thrown at the players faces just to get them to do what you want them too.
I Hope this helps and the only example of my philosophy I can give you is my own game, The Trilogy War, which in August will have been running on the Inn for 4 years so I guess I must be doing something right

Without any sort of hesitation the huge Gladiator moved to the little mages side and picked him up.
“Concentrate on the spell, I will get us out of here”
So said Maximus moved them both towards the hole in the towers wall.

As Hignar watched, the stone horse grew to its living size and with a seemingly snort of amusement at its possible new owner, the dwarf knew that the horse and he were not destined to be partners.
“Ahhh may hap I be speak’in too soon in this, be giv'in yon beastie to someone else I be pick’n something else fur sure.”
His face red and embarrassed he turned leaving the laughter of the others behind him he moved back into the interior of the Inn. The comments, though of a friendly nature the dwarf knew well, he yet felt humiliated by not having known the true size of the beast. With the horse’s seemingly disbelieving attitude of ’ you want him to RIDE me’ Highnar could not at that moment join in their laughter and so did not by passing the group’s table and heading alone for his room.........

Croaker after his initial words to Spiff had remained for the most part quiet surprised at the Fixer’s reaction to the Nomads words. What had happened to the raving lunatic from the hospital had Jack had a ‘talk’ with him? No matter the reason it gave Croaker hope that he and Spiff could work together long enough to get them all out of this mess.
By some careful positioning Croaker had placed himself at the head of the table which put his back to the wall behind him and left him facing the Red Lantern’s entrance.
Watching as Peacekeeper took Jack’s call about the two new team members Croaker was looking straight at the Lantern’s entrance as the two made their arrival known.
At once what had been a relaxed caution went to full blown red alert, his right hand having stayed below the table in his pocket, moved slightly and integrated the Smart Linked SMG to Croaker’s cybernetic hardware. The Nomad knew the first of the two men to enter his name MDK. The man was a hired killer, an assassin a hitman call him what you wanted the man was dangerous and way out of the price range for this job.
He was a high priced personality rumored to be working for the corps and anyone who could meet his price tag. It had even been rumored at one time that he had been hired by Sharon Maxwell, the Director of Housing Development, to track and kill Croaker after he spurned her romantic overture having already been in love with Jaimy. As nothing had come of it Croaker had considered it just that a rumor but now here he was right in front of the Nomad seemingly sent by Jack, Croakers thumb fingered and released the MPK’s safety. A quick locking of the eyes with Bulls Eye, an old signal of trouble passed between the two, Croaker hoped his Brother would remember it and be ready to back his move if it became needed. Knowing Peacekeeper and her rep he also hoped she would feel his tension and know something was perhaps wrong and be on alert.
“I’m MDK I believe you are expecting me.”
"Good afternoon MDK, yes we were just informed of your arrival,” Peacekeeper smiled gently, almost easily as she nodded and spoke.
“Have a seat, Mr. MDK,” Scribe spoke after Jaimy “We’re about to order some food, and make some reports before deciding on our next course of action. Introductions all around: I’m DigitalScribe, this here is Guardian, currently hired on as my bodyguard—I tend to like to stay in one piece. That’s Spiff; he’s got the connections, if you know what I mean, and that’s his shield, Preacher there looking like he’s ready to ride bull. Smiles over there is Firewind, our medtech, and the lotus there is Peacekeeper. Our intrepid leader is Croaker at the head of the table, and his brother Bull's Eye. We know you’re MDK, but who’s this fellow?”
“His name is Lightning, he’s a Techie, “ MDK said by way of introduction. “I was told to round up any help I could find,” his smirk grew slightly sarcastic it seemed to Croaker, “The best I could do on such short notice.”
OK, so here’s the scoop” Scribe began as he watched Peacekeeper’s face for some sign of what she was looking at. “I’ve taken the footage I took of last night’s altercation and put it in the hands of a braindance wizard. He’s going to help us pin that little mess on the big dog by placing them at the scene instead of us. Should be done later today, and it wasn’t cheap, so a thank you is appreciated. Once we have that, I’ve got a source that I can ‘leak’ the footage to with reference to our vague knowledge of the designer drug. This will, hopefully, bring enough unwanted attention on the operators in charge of that little program that we’ll have some breathing room. Now, what’s our next move?”
Before anyone else could answer Scribe, Peacekeeper drew everyone’s attention. Her face set in stone, her professional persona revealed nothing only that it was time for all to listen up and to pay attention to her.
"I've got a location. There's only a two-lane road that leads to our location, and there is 10 of us. It would be much too suspicious if all of us climbed into one vehicle to get there. It's just over 10 miles from the city. There is a lot of coverage by pine and mountains, but I think if we can devise a plan we could find a way to overcome the security gate.”
After a short pause she added
"I should be getting blue prints shortly, if all goes well"
She fell silent and sipped at her drink waiting for the rest to speak but it was MDK who spoke first.
“Who is in charge here?”
“Well that depends on who you ask” The large Nomad stated in a calm yet very icy voice, his finger on the MPK’s trigger, “But I’m Croaker and like Scribe said, for the moment I am.”

Al, You mean to tell me that they changed the rate of fire from two arrows a round to this manyshot BS.
This is why I WILL NEVER run a AD&D Game in 3rd edition or any other beyond 2nd. I am of half a mind to say the hell with this and create a new character maybe say a chipmonk for all the help I am as a Ranger.
