Random point: Carl is becoming pretty cool.

As for Lori? There are few televisions characters I bother to hate. I truly DESPISE this woman. The day she gets zombie munched cannot come too soon. Perhaps she's carrying a walker-baby that will eat its way from her womb.

Still too good for her.

Yeah, this is the kind of thing that can really annoy people. That being said, better that they encounter this kind of setting inmake believe, so as to hopefully learn something and be better prepared if such a situation came up for real.

Ah, well. We can have a nice chat about this at 0800.

Stardate 2368.07.08
USS Discovery, main bridge - 0321

Captain Blair surveyed the bridge, his expression almost blank. Warning indicators lit up the various consoles like proverbial Christmas trees. The klaxon itself had been muted, but the visual red alert indicators continued to flash. Officers around the bridge wore exxpressions of anger, of worry... perhaps even of a little fear.

Commander Avanti had appeared and made his way to the XO's chair, but the massive Domtarian had had little to share. His expression was alien enough to be difficult to read, but Blair could have sworn that the former engineer looked... almost perplexed, as if he couldn't quite grasp something about the current situation.

"Captain!" Ensign Thorn exclaimed. "The port impulse engine is virtually unresponsive. Output well below half of optimality; we're a miracle short of stranded, I don't know that I can avoid further impacts."

Lieutenant Graham had his own take. "Sir, I recommend we shut it down, NOW, or we may lose half the ship!"

No warp drive. Only one functional impulse engine. Shields failing, two hull breaches. Boarders. Situations did not get much more dire than this.

And yet, in the chaos of the moment, Noah Blair felt pride. Yes, there was fear; only madmen felt no fear. But that fear was accompanied in his officers by jaws set in determination.

Not one soul had given up, despite what was becoming an increasingly obvious outcome. Science was racing to try a new tack to discover their foe, tactical was looking for any possible defense - and counterattack - strategy, operations was holding things together in the face of incredible odds, helm was fighting to wring every ounce of performance from the crippled ship.

If there was a finer collection of officers anywhere in the galaxy, Blair mused, I'd like to see it. Hopefully, they will grow from this...

The deck heaved again, the lighting on the bridge flickered and dimmed, and even more warning indicators began to flash. The blood drained from Lieutenant Graham's face, but he dutifully began to report. "Captain, direct hit. We've lost..."

Enough was enough.

Captain Blair cut his ops chief off. "Belay that, Lieutenant."

The Captain stood, then spoke in a measured tone. "Cancel red alert. Computer, cancel simulation."

=/\=Affirmative. Simulation cancelled.=/\= the computer responded. Instantly, the warnings ceased, the lights came back up to normal, and all instrument panels returned to nominal readouts. The viewscreen flashed for a moment, then reset to a slightly different display of nothing but empty space.

Next, Blair paged the intercom. "Now hear this," he spoke firmly. "This is Captain Blair. Red alert has been cancelled. The preceding events were a drill. You may now return to your scheduled duties. That is all."

With communication closed, Blair addressed the bridge crew. "Thank you all for your participation. Senior staff, I would like to discuss my thoughts with you in the Observation Lounge at 0800. Until then, try to get some sleep."

He then keyed his communicator. "Blair to Doctor Synklar. Doctor, how is Lieutennt Zavaleta?"

(assuming a response indicating minor injuries, stable condition, etc)

"Thank you, Doctor," he replied. "Hopefully, the remainder of your duties related to the drill will entail nothing more than a few bumps and bruises. I fear that Lieutenant N'doog may have taken my comment about 'shaking things up' a bit too literally. Blair out."

Speaking of which... Blair mused before keying his communicator again.

"Blair to Engineering. Commander Pantanko, please give my regards to Lieutenant N'doog. The simulation he created was very good - perhaps a bit too good. I had not expected the situation to become that grim so quickly. Regardless, I very much appreciate his efforts on this."

(assuming an affirmative reply)

"Thank you, Commander," he answered. "Blair out."

With all of the immediate duties taken care of, Captain Blair singled out the junior operations officer that had been the original watch officer. "If there is nothing else? Lieutenant Ames," he spoke, "you have the bridge."

With that, the Captain exited, and the boredom of the graveyard shift was allowed to slowly filter back in.

I agree with most of what Eol is saying, but do note that the Captain Blair has standing orders that there always be both a science officer and a security officer on the bridge.

This is partially due to game concerns; this allows those department head players a reason to be in the "middle of the action", so to speak.

However, it's also for practical reasons - the Discovery is largely tasked to science-related roles, Blair has a science background, and it's nice to have situations like where Lieutenant Lieran was able to see for herself what was going on and come up with other scans. Harder to do this with second hand info.

Likewise, the Discovery has had attackers beamed directly to the bridge before, an Blair has lost a commanding officer himself; he believes that it makes sense to always have a security represenative on the bridge.

This can be a junior offier; if John were to lead a team to repel boarders, it would make perfect sense (he's presumably the most qualified for the task). However, it also makes sense if he wants to manage those teams from a central location.

Good thing you aren't a rules lawyer, since this is a freeform game.

We use the linked documents as our cannon reference, but there are some conflicting pieces of data available. In those cases, we make a call and go with it.

That makes sense, Ody. There is a primary and backup life support setup. That would explain the different decks so far apart.

Only our ops officer has noticed the floating bodies.

Containment fields are in place at the breach affected decks - security personnel should be safe (provided there is not another direct hit to an already breached deck).

No worries.

Starfleet warships often/usually have marines. Discovery is not a warship. She has a significant complement of civilians, for instance.

Also, for the record, I love reading the heavy accent. I'd rather you kept it and, if necessary, gave a "universal translator" version for unclear spots in the q&a.

Or, you know, let people use the q&a to ask questions if they don't understand something.

Teller, I thought it was a great post. Exactly the kind of insight we want to see.

Ody - there are such a thing as marines in starfleet, but we do not have any on the Discovery. We have security.

The physical damage to the ship is on decks 20 to 24. The intruder alert came from deck 11. Presumably, an attacker wants to disable the ship, but not try to enter an area that could be exposed to vacuum due to the damage.

Excellent post, Eol (do you make any other kind?).

A few notes: I though I had posted this info in the Q&A, but apparently not.

I will likely NPC Commander Pantanko (Chief Engineer) if we need a post from her, as Celeste is in a flux state right now (but will be posting soon).

As for running? That may be tough. As it so happens, we are close to (but should have been far enough away as to be safe from) the romulan neutral zone. Dicovery was traveling at impulse because the warp drive is offline for maintenance and recalibration right now, with a completion ETA of another day or so.

edit: I know that I exchanged PMs about the warp drive, but could have SWORN that I mentioned it inthe Q&A before. I did not.

Folks, I'm not trying to be horrible here and railroad us to oblivion. I'm really not.

Stardate: 2368.07.08
USS Discovery, main bridge - 0319

Captain Blair focused intently on the viewscreen as chaos whirled around the bridge. As senior officers appeared and relieved the night watch personnel, orders were relayed. Neither the tactical or operations chiefs had sought his input or okay to handle the imminent emergencies under their direct areas of responsibilty - which was exactly how the Captain wanted it.

MacTavish voiced his suggestion. "I recommend tha’ we retreat ta a distance outside o’ known taripedo range ‘til I c’n get wi’ Sensors an’ ‘ave some tinkerin’ done, sair. Per’aps these sneaky buggers’ll give a bit o’ a chase an’ we’ll catch a wink o' their energy signature ef naught else... Give us somethen’ ta point at, aye?"

As always, the Scotsman had a sound plan - and it echoed what the Captain had himself been thinking. "Agreed, Lieutenant," he answered. Fixing his gaze on the young man at the helm - the Deck Officer had notified the bridge of Lieutenant Zavaleta's accident, but the aCFCO had yet to make it onto the bridge - Blair gave specific orders.

"Ensign, evasive manuevers immediately. Take us in the opposite direction of the damage, then come about to face this general position." That would put the Discovery in optimal firing position.

The Discovery lept into motion, and for a moment, it seemed that the plan would work. An energy signature appeared on the sensor readouts; a slight shimmer appeared to denote the position of a craft, but it disappeared within an instant. Suddenly, the deck violently pitched again - the worst such incident yet - and this time, the fallout was much more serious. Warning indicators lit up on terminals all across the bridge. The situation was truly dire, as the computer itself chimed in.

=/\=WARNING!=/\= it intoned in a pleasant, but serious, female voice. =/\=Hull breach detected on decks twenty and twenty-four.=/\=

If possible, things got even worse from there. As the deflector shields appeared to "flicker" for a moment, then yet another warning indicator popped up - this time, on the tactical console.
