Thanks for the heads up. I'll NPC your guy as need be.

Sorry, not trying to come across as a jerk, but in a rules-based game, I have to keep a tight hand on things.

Feel free to post - combat post is up.

Note that for most fights, you may want o lay out a strategy for what you'll try to accomplish over a couple of combat rounds. Otherwise, I might assume for you.

As it all turns out, Jake won initiative and made a great throw (attack roll amost perfect), so a lot of the earlier posts would have been fine.

That being said, STILL DON'T ASSUME.

Okay, folks, feel free to post where you go from here.

Subject: the first encounter

October 26, 2014
Cornelia Avenue, 800 block - 12:10 PM

As the creature steps from the shadows of the alley into the direct sunlight, it hesitates for a moment as if disoriented, but quickly resumes its headlong rush at the party.

Jake lights his makeshift molotov and throws it in a perfect arc, where it explodes against the stomach of the creature, engulfing it in flames (and very nearly including Murphy in the explosion). However, the creature bears little notice to the damage; it screams in either pain or fury and continues to charge.

At the last possible moment, the Browning in Murph's hands roars, catching the attacker in the left temple. The force of the blow spins it completely around in midair before it crashes to the ground and lies still.

The flames contiue to burn for several moments as the remainder of the alcohol is consumed by the fire, and the air is filled with the smells of burned flesh and hair. Thankfully, the creature's momentum caused it to roll over enough to somewhat hide the fact that it is now missing a large chunk of its head.

The corpse on the ground stares out from its one visible eye, and now appears much less threatening. In fact, in another time and place, this young woman's lifeless body could be that of Emily's sister - she was about the same size, coloration, and had very similar curly brown hair and dark eyes. It is a horrifying glimpse at mortality, to say the least.

Soon, the fire burns out, and all is again deathly silent.

Very nice, Ody. I was slow on the uptake as to why you'd picked a d38...

Looks like reddit likes this strip (no huge surprise, there). That being said, total votes are pretty low (6 up, 2 down), so if you like it, please vote it up. Literally takes seconds to register if you don't have a reddit account.

Now hear this!

Here's the deal. This is a rules-based game, not a freeform game. I thought that I made that exceedingly clear in my very first recruitment post, but I will admit, I did not go into the full details of exactly what that means. We've discussed it a bit here in the Q&A, but there still may be some room for misunderstanding, so let me clarify now.

You, as a player, control the actions of your character, and your character only. You may not create items or NPCs, you may not narrate where something is located, what a given situation is, or determine the outcome of ANY action whatsoever.

I am the GM. I narrate the setting, place NPCs (whether human, zombie, or anything else) within it. I use rules, stats, and dice to determine the outcome of every action.

When combat situations arise, I use modified D20 Modern rules to resolve it. You, as the player, post what your character is intending on doing. I, as the GM, use the dice to determine initiative (which is the order in which every combat participant gets to act). I then determine the success or failure of combat actions or other skill checks. For instance, had Murph rolled to go first, and scored a critical hit with his shotgun, the zombie's head would have exploded, and there would have been no need for the molotov to have been lit. Had the zombie gone first, it might have attacked Jake before he got the chance to fling the moltov.

In noncombat situations, post what your character is trying to do, and I'll let you now if it works or not. Want to hotwire a car? I'll determine if it works. Hack a computer? Same thing. Heal an injured teammate? I'll let you know.

In short, you cannot assume ANYTHING. Post your character's thoughts and intentions. Do not post the results of any action, as it limits the choices for other characters.

I am retconning (i.e. changing reality) back to the beginning of this fight. The molotov has not been thrown, much less exploded. I will then resolve combat from there.

This will be the only warning.

Normally, I would deal with these sort of offenses very harshly, indeed. However, we do have players who may be new to rules-based gaming, so I will make a one-time exception. In the future, if you have a question, ask myself, Merideth, or Eol Fefalas.

I love the enthusiasm, but quit trying to post three times before I have gotten a chance to respond. Slow down, figure out the full details of what your character is going to do, and why they are doing it. Post your characters thoughts, let us know their motivations, and let us know what they are trying to do. BUT LET ME HANDLE THE RESULTION OF THOSE INTENTIONS.

If anyone else steps on my GM toes and tries to affect reality of the game, post results of actions, etc, that character will be unceremoniously killed in a humiliating manner, and the player will be permenantly removed from the game (no backup character allowed).

Are we all perfectly clear?

Thanks. As long as it does not hapen again, no harm, no foul, life goes on.

O'Brian's Pub - 12:05 PM

The band of survivors huddled at the still locked front door of O'Brian's Pub. Tommy Murphy was surprised at just how difficult it was to force his hand to unlock, unbolt, and open the door; in the end, though, the potential terror of outside was deemed less than the certain death of waiting inside.

The companions made their way, single file, up the short flight of steps that led to street level. The sun was bright and harsh, causing everyone to blink against the glare; ten days of poor lighting made even a slightly overcast day seem like staring too close to the sun. A slightly cool wind blew leaves down the street in a grim reminder that winter was coming soon.

Strangely, the rustling of those leaves was the only sound to be heard aside form their footsteps. There was no traffic, no voices, no human noises at all. The street itself was desolate and empty, with a few overturned cars - some burned - blocking the way. However, such obstacles were easy enough for individuals on foot to maneuver around.

With no immediate threat presenting itself, the group sets out, headed east on Cornelia. As they picked their way past a gutted pickup truck, a white sedan with a blue stripe (and disctintive light bar on top) comes into view - a police car had crashed into a building near the corner of the street. The driver's side door is open, but no occupant is apparent.

Suddenly, motion becomes apparent from one of the alleys. It is a human form, but slightly hunched... and it simply feels wrong. It takes a step, pauses, then makes a pained shriek and charges at a dead run towards the survivors!

Since there is some confusion, I'm going with what Eol has posted.

Head east on the current street (Cornelia), hit the Save Rite pharmacy, then the Ace hardware (since they are almost next door to one another). Getting to Wrigley fromt here will be a little backtracking; up to you guys.

If I don't hear otherwise (and soon), I'm goign to assume this.

Note that I'll re-read posts to see who has what weaponry, but you guys didn't make this overly clear. For instance, I don't see anyone claiming ownership of the crowbar. If nobody does so, I'll consider it left behind.

I said I'd collaborate if/when you died. I never said it was certain (only likely).

A word of warning to the party: be careful what you assume. We've all seen zombie movies, so I'm sure you have an idea of what to expect, but don't think you know it all. My zombie apocalypse might be a bit different than those you've seen on TV. Also, know that metagaming has always been a huge pet peeve of mine - don't have your characters act on knowledge they can't have. Not saying anyone has, just a reminder.

Finally - I don't see how Murph can carry the shotgun and the crowbar AND the bat. I mean, he can, but he won't be effective in combat. Let me know who is carrying what, weapon-wise, for each party member.

Topic: Continuing Where We Last Left Off
Subject: a bad feeling

When the doors whooshed open, Arien clutched his flaming longsword even tighter as he prepared for the attack that was sure to come.

Only, it never did.

The scene was a nightmare come to life - the poor priests have been massacred, their bodies deflied and dismembered. It was enough to turn even a hardened warrior's stomach.

Something caught the knight's eye - every dead priest was holding a knife or cleaver. What manner of evil is this?, he wondered. Had the priests fought for their defence, they would have surely used staves, hammers, or maces. Even if one or two elected to use a proscribed blade, there was zero chance that they all would have. Furthermore, the blades were still held tight; this made no sense. Typically, when a person died, their muscles went slack. Certainly, some might still hold a item, especially if the tendons were quickly cut and prevented somehow from loosening, but for all of them?

No, this felt horribly wrong. Arien was filled with a sense of foreboding... this felt like a message, or worse yet, a trap.

Carefully, the knight advanced, taking care to circle the perimeter of the room. "Something is amiss here," he warned, "even more so than meets the eye." Quickly, Arien shared his fear regarding the knives.

The giggle of the girl added even more otherworldly horror to the scene. There was no cause here for mirth - only madness or the purest form of evil could muster such a reaction. Arien's thoughts flew to the dream they had lived, where they had all perished. The giggle felt like something that would have come from the dream.

"What evil hides here?" he demanded aloud, weapons at the ready. "Show yourself!"

I have given you guys a freebie you didn't ask for. Don't expect favors like this often.

I have marked on your map (page 4 of this Q&A) where an Ace hardware exists (the only one within our map area, though there are other hardware stores not far away).

Next time, I'll wait until the zombie rush is on you and then let you know that sure, there was a hardware store right around where you were going...

I did link the wrong comic above (fixed), but the reddit link is correct. "Tentacle Monsters, Anyone?" is not the actual title of the comic - but reddit titles seldom are. It says "rdinn.net" because that is the domain - not the actual link back to our comic. If you click the title there on reddit, it takes you to the comic in question.

Call it a minor advertising ploy. Or something.

Here, guys - I have made you a map with local pharmacies, the closest grocery store, Wrigley field, and a 7-eleven marked on it. There are tons of bars and souvenier stores (Cub's jersey's and tees aplenty) on Clark and Addison by Wrigley.

You won't get this level of detail all the time, but the party members who live locally would know where all of these are.
