Topic: the new Star Trek movie
Subject: the new Star Trek movie

I went to see this one this weekend. My impressions follow:

Superb casting. I can absolutely buy everyone in their roles. Kirk was a little more of a hothead than I would have liked, Spock was a little too angry himself, and Chekov did little more than serve as a punchline... but all told, great job. Scotty was a scene stealer every time, loved grouchy McCoy. The acting itself was spot on. Loved the dialogue, loved the moments of humor.

Of course, the effects were superb. This was the best-looking Trek ever. No surprise there.

The story was solid. I'm not sure that I'm entirely happy about WHAT they did here - there's a huge rewrite of the Trek universe's history - but I can't really complain at HOW they did it - the method they used was pretty much spot-on Trek stuff that we've seen quite a few times before. They've also cleverly set themselves up to be able to do pretty much anything that they want, now, and still be canon.

Bottom line? See. The. Movie. As advertised, it is a complete reboot of the Trek franchise - it stays true to the heart and soul of everything you've ever loved about Trek, but breathes new life into everything. Well worth the price of admission!

We'll have to see.

Right now, we have a grand total of two completed strips; this is a bit behind where I thought we'd be at this point.

I have just discovered that our artist is not a guy, but a girl. D'oh!

She goes by initials instead of a first name, and I made an assumption. Say it with me, now, "when you assume, you make an ass out of you and me."

Actually, just out of me.

Yeah, Steve is based on me. All of the characters are at least somewhat based upon real people. These are caricatures of those people, though - they are NOT those actual people.

Oh, and in regards to the crowd scene - I actually have a concept piece with everyone on it. I am cropping them out one by one to post here and lengthen the tease while we prepare a stockpile of strips. You know, a transparent way to keep people interested.

Check the first page of the thread - I have posted the first piece of concept art there, along with a brief description of the character.

I will add a new one of these every few days.

You guys are not the first to suggest the coolness factor of appearances by members of this site in the comic. While I will certainly not rule out a cameo here or there, please note that this comic is based upon a fictional group of people (who may or may not bear resemblences to certain real life individuals). I want the comic to have universal appeal to tabletop gamers - and thus bring traffic to the Inn - so I will almost certainly avoid "inside jokes" and such that would require one to have an intimate knowledge of the Inn and/or the forums to understand.

I can do that. That artist is TL Jackson, aka lolkat. He is not currently a member of the Inn, though I expect that will be corrected before we go live.

No need for that. I haven't given the staff sneak peeks either.

This thread has one purpose: to tease the comic, and to raise awareness for it.

Wait, aren't those the same thing?

The comic will be D&D related. The main idea is that we'll be following a group of gamers, as well as the storyline of the characters that they are playing.

Watch this space as I will introduce the various characters here.

Steve
Steve is the group's sarcastic, conniving GM. He has grand designs for the games that he runs... which frequently devolve into something less, thanks to the antics of the group.

Steve has been friends with Ray, Brad, and Rich for years - dating back to high school. The others members of the group are new to him.

Rich
Rich is a dyed in the wool gamer who willingly plays whatever role the group needs him to fill (and is good at it). While not an over the top player, Rich does love to develop elaborate backstories for his characters, and will retell stories of past gaming session at great length, if allowed to do so. A genuinely nice guy, Rich has earned more than his fair share of dice showers due to his awful tendency to utter some of the most terrible puns ever spoken by any human.

Brad
Hot tempered, Brad is what some would poltely call a "good old boy" - others might simply brand him a redneck. While gaming, Brad would certainly be a munchkin if he were comfortable enough with the rules to mix/max that well. Brad loves to play big, strong fighter types (stereotypical barbarians, paladins, etc - those that require little thinking) that carry huge weapons. The more damage, the better!

Amy
A prototypical "real roleplayer", Amy loves to immerse herself into games through her character's personality and story. She is every DM's dream - a player who enjoys reading about the campaign setting, and who commits even the smallest detail of the game world to heart.

Amy puts a lot of thought into her character's development, motivation, interests, and such. As a result, she tends to get annoyed with the guys for their lack of serious attention to the game.

Tim
The grizzled old guy of the group, Tim possesses a warped sense of humor. While Tim lives to throw the proverbial monkeywrench into the DM's plans, he'll settle with harassing other players.

Tim is a smart player, with a systematic approach to in-game problems. He keeps detailed maps of the adventures in an effort to avoid any "we forgot where that was" moments.

Tim has a preference for playing wizards.

Ray

Ray is... different. Some might label him an oddball or loony, and pretty much anyone can see his munchkin tendencies. Ray will participate in the plot very seriously, but if he becomes bored, he will not hesitate to bring things to a screeching halt with insane humor or rules lawyering.

While Ray enjoys gaming, he seems to enjoy disrupting the game equally well. He is perpetually late to everything, and is known to be very particular with new character concepts.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

Okay, wait. Start over.

Last year, I annouced that I was looking for a webcomic artist for an RDI-sponsored project. Well, it never took off, and the project has been on the shelf for six months.

Until now.

I have a new artist (who, unlike my prior artist, apparently has no life ), and have the first completed strip in my hands, with several more due shortly.

The idea is to stockpile a minimum of a month's supply before strip #1 goes live, so that we do the best we can to avoid the webcomic cliche of not updating on time.

So, keep your eyes open. Right now, I am very tentatively looking at early June to launch the new RDI webcomic.

Feel free to question or speculate... but this is all the info I'm giving out right now. Keep an eye on this space as I will keep you posted.

Is there any point in pressing this game on? I know that my own flakiness, combined with the issues of some players, have derailed us (but mainly my flakiness).

Is there interest from our players for picking this one back up?

Kilmorrigan, on bahalf of the Red Dragon Inn family and staff, I offer our sincerest condolences. Both you and your uncle are valued members of our community, and our hearts go out to you in such a time of loss.

It is unfortunate how family often react to such tragedies; if I may offer a piece of unsolicted advice, try to minimize the extra pain that this causes you. Grief can make people deal with things in irrational ways, including having as little to do with the situation as possible. So many families have permanent wedges driven between them due to people behaving in the manner you describe. I'm absolutely not defending the sisters - family should be there for one another - just warning that anger over these actions can have permanent effects on your family.

But that's neither here nor there. We at the Inn of course understand the absences of you and your uncle. We hope that, when time has allowed enough healing to take place, that you will rejoin us. From the description given by Utan, it sounds as if your late uncle also derived a lot of enjoyment from gaming... I expect that he would be not feel slighted, but honored that you continue to do so, as well.

But only when you are ready.

This time around, we are not finding out the gender. Man, I'm sick of baby clothes with ducks on them already!

I was in Chicago a couple of years ago, and will be going back this summer. When I was there, I was struck by a couple of things:

Aside from the south side of the city, Chicago is, hands down the cleanest big city I have ever visited. Trash was nonexistent. Little patches of grasses and flowers are planted all over the place, making the whole area feel cleaner.

I was stunned at the overall friendliness of poeple there. On the bus, people routinely gave up their seats for the elderly and disabled without anyone asking them to do so. Certainly, the city has an enormous population, but the vast majority were quite friendly.

I walked the theatre district at night, down to the Navy Pier, and never saw any reason not to do so. The city is well lit and well patrolled.

Use your common sense, but I think that Tann's estimations of horrible ganbangers may be a tad overstated.

I'll be continuing to tweak player creation, so that their abilities make more sense. Also, if you notice that your team is gone, give it a few minutes - I may be resetting the league or tinkering with code.

Sorry, these are the joys of alpha testing.

I have revamped the way in which players are created, especially in relation to additional positions.

You'll notice that, with many players, if you click on their name, you'll see that they have extra positions, with a number listed afterwards in parenthesis.

Such as a first baseman with the following -
Additional position: Right Field (65)

This means that he has a familiarity rating of 65 as a right fielder. Note that all players have a 100 in their primary position. This familiarity rating is used to figure how much they are penalized defensively for playing out of position. The more a player plays in a position, the higher that rating can go.

Note also that some positions are easier to learn than others... and this is further incfluenced by the position considered to be player's "natural" position. For instance, a short stop can learn second base easily. Learning to be a catcher, on the other hand, is quite difficult. A center fielder can play left field easily, but will experience a steeper learning curve playing second base.

If you are interested in helping with the truly boring stages right now - mainly, drafting a roster, tinkering with your settings, seeing what changes thay make, and notifying me of any crazy results (such as a roster with only 3 pitchers on it), let me know, and I'll add you now.

If not, watch this space and let me know when we've progressed enough that you'd be interested.

By the way, to those who have already joined - if you find your draft preferences reset to something you do not recognize, it's because I have completely wiped and reinstated the league (due to an underlying error I've discovered). I did this today when I noticed that minor league level pitchers were using an incorrect algorhythm for creating potential ratings in the batting areas, thus meanign that a guy with a 30 in batting contact might have a potential of 95. I could buy that in a position player, but not in a pitcher.
