Boo Boo.. welcome to the game! Excellent opening post.

Dox - loved it, man. Glad to see you back in action.

Arcani - Eol covered it for you. We're now docked with Starbase 118; you can report for duty any time you see fit.

I will likely try to get a "real" intro post up today, even if character sheets are not done. We can get to those, and won't need them immediately

Fleet Week! Fleet Week!

Okay... those of you who have duties - most notably, Tesenblen and/or Thorson and the offloading of the pod - you can use that as inspiration to post.

Others - I don't have any key characters on duty between the end of Beta shift (1900) and tomorrow morning so you could explore Starbase 118, if you so desire.

Subject: insults...

In case you missed some specific insults in my latest post...

Jacobs referred to Drake as "mister". "Mister" is typically reserved for junior officers only - ensign, lieutenant junior grade... a captain could refer to a lieutenant as "mister" and it would be okay, though you'll notice that Drake usually uses "lieutenant", saving "mister" for when he is annoyed (as when Tesenblen could not be reached after being summoned to the bridge).

A lieutenant commander can technically be referred to as "mister", but doing so implies offense, as it infers that the officer is junior. To refer to a full Commander as such would only be done as an intentional insult, and it is NEVER appropriate to refer to the Captain of a vessel as such. Jacobs was pretty far out of line in terms of etiquette on this.

Furthermore, an officer might refer to their own ship as a "boat" in an affectionate manner, but to refer to another starship as a "boat" is again a pretty blatant insult - the implication being that the vessel is tiny and insignificant.

((OOC: taking a couple of liberties with who is on the bridge. It's Rock's command shift, so I'm assuming he would slide to TAC1, and bump Lt. Reid (currently on duty for Tac) to TAC2. PO Amai is scheduled to be on duty for Ops right now, but I'm thinking Chell would want to be here for his final moments onboard. Likewise, a petty officer would be at the helm, but I don't see Lt. Zai leaving the approach to a starbase with an NCO. If you feel otherwise, please let me know.))

Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine, Bridge - 1719

The viewscreen shifted dramatically, returning to the panorama of stars viewable in normal space as the Peregrine dropped out of warp. As Captain Drake leaned forward slightly in his seat, a grin tried desperately to tug at the corner of his mouth. No matter how many times he experienced it, spaceflight continued to thrill him, and seeing new places, new views just felt right at some nigh-cellular level.

"Starbase 118 detected, Captain", Lieutenant Commander Chell reported from his Ops station. "Approximately twelve million kilometers away, bearing one seven point four, mark one one six. I register one Federation vessel near the starbase... it is the Coronado, sir."

"Thank you, Commander," Drake replied. "Open a channel and inform the starbase of our arrival."

"Aye, sir" came the Bolian's reply.

Next, Drake spoke to the helm. "Lieutenant Zai, take us into the starbase, please; half impulse."

((OOC: assuming an affirmative))

Figuring off the top of his head, the Captain knew that would put them a little over five minutes out. Only a couple of minutes into the flight, Commander Chell looked up from his station. "Captain," he spoke, "The Coronado is hailing us."

Smiling a bit, Silas nodded. "I take it Sarah was waiting for us, then? Put it onscreen."

Drake stood as the viewscreen shifted to the interior of the other starship's bridge. However, his smile quickly faded. Rather than meeting the twinkling eyes and raven-haired visage of Captain Morland, his gaze instead settled on a man's taut, tight-lipped face. The brows beneath the receding hairline of wispy gray arched slightly. "Commander Drake," came a measured, condescending, nasal voice with more than a bit of a British accent. "I see that Starfleet finally found a boat they could spare to your command."

Silas realized that his hands were balled into fists at his sides, and his teeth were clenched. Forcing himself to relax, he responded. I will not take the bait. "Captain Jacobs," he replied formally. "How good to see you again."

Jacobs chuckled mirthlessly. "I rather doubt that, now, Mister Drake. So you are to be our escort, then? I had almost thought that Admiral Harding was winding me up a bit when she told me that I was to trust the security of my mission to your efforts." He sighed slightly. "Fortunately for everyone involved, there is little you are expected to do; I would expect that you are up to the task of staying close by and not interfering with the negotiations, yes?"

A dead silence hung in the air for several moments as Silas realized that he was expected to acknowledge his ability to do nothing. Swallowing, he nodded. "Aye sir. I believe that I can do that."

The Captain of the Coronado smiled, though the expression was every bit as lacking in warmth as his chuckle had been. "Very well, then. The ambassadors are due to board at 0800 tomorrow morning; we will then depart for the Gamera system. You will meet with us on Starbase 118 to welcome them, as they have requested to meet all commanding officers... such as they are. Jacobs out."

And with that, the communication was cut, returning the viewscreen to the panorama of stars.

Silas felt his cheeks burn, though he simply retook his seat and cleared his throat. "Take us in carefully, Tochi. By the book, if you please."

Don't worry about pricing right now. Assume that your character has a full set of reasonable armor (chain + shield or lower), a primary weapon, a backup weapon, a good supply of necessary ammo (if appropriate), a couple weeks' worth of rations, a good backpack, and the assorted typical adventuring gear you would reasonably own.

You're not new to the adventuring game, so if you want that silk rope, go for it. Don't feel like you have to skimp on the arrows, etc.

That said, Audalis is a low magic world - don't expect to own any enchanted items yet.

The Dark One shifted ever so slightly on his throne of skulls. Something unexpected had caught his gaze, causing him to stare deeply into the scrying mists.

His attention piqued, he considered this unexpected development. Slowly, his normally baleful expression morphed into a terrifying rictus of a smile.

This situation was promising. More then promising, in fact... it opened all sorts of delicious possibilities.

One of the Eyeless Ones gestured, wondering if it should inform Her of this new discovery. For the slightest of moments, the Dark One pondered, but shook his head, causing the Eyeless One to melt into the shadows.

No, there was no point in informing Her yet. Furthermore, if things worked out to their full potential... well, the possibilities were very interesting, indeed...

She sold your books? Aaargh!

Sir, if you need, I can hook you up with an amazing PDF of all of that out of print 2nd Edition goodness...

Okay folks... I'm cutting off recruitment. As it stands, I have something like four more good submissions than I can use.

I'm sorely tempted to start a second game, but I'm already running Trek, and I don't want all of my games to suffer because I've dived in too deep.

Brom, is there any chance that I cold talk you into DMing a game of your own? Your an excellent writer, and a great DM. The Inn could really benefit from it!

As I already told you in PM, Reralae, I'd love to have you back. Rae was an excellent character, she's a great fit for this adventure. Of course, she has lived the first part of it before. Glitch in the matrix?

Schnozzle:

1) I hate to give away too much. I'd say classic horror meets D&D. I'm sure that those who read between the lines will assume "undead", and that will be a part of it... but there is some pretty disturbing mental imagery that will come into play. Seriously, this disgusts me.

2) That depends on the player. If you're looking to play something that pretty setting-agnostic - i.e. a mercenary warrior, a blaster mage, etc - then the setting won't really impact you overmuch. If you are wanting to play a demihuman character, understand that the "flavor" of the setting will enter in a bit - I'll be happy to help you hash out these points. If you are interested in a divine caster or paladin, you ought to PM me (or at least to a little homework on the Audalis pantheon), as "generic priest template" may not play exactly like you expect.

3) This is ultra hard to predict. It's not an overly long module; if we were at a tabletop, we could finish the adventure in one moderate to long session. However, play by post games can take a looong time.

In an effort to speed the game, I usually handle 2-3 rounds of combat per round of posting (you post your character's basic intentions, give me contingencies, etc), but even shorter fights can still take two or three rounds of posting to resolve. How many posts will the party as a whole spend on various interactions with NPCs along the way? It's tough to say.

I've never seen a play by post game wrap quicker than several months.

I plan to approach this game like I'm approaching Trek - I'm going to push to move things along. I've been terrible in the past for waiting for people, letting the game get derailed, then I get bored... not this time!

Yes, multiclassing is allowed. I go pretty much by the book, save I don't impose level limits on demihumans.

Paladins are allowed to any race, and need not be Lawful Good. Paladins in my games are servants of their particular deity, so the character's alignment will be tied to the deity. I will carefully explain how the character is expected to act. Basically, you pick an Audalis deity to be a servant of, then you follow their code. Yes, that means that evil deities have paladins, as well... but this game is not suited for those.

I've had great fun, for instance, with a paladin of Shinara (goddess of luck); the character was chaotic neutral, always had to trust in fortune to guide him. Chaos, away!
