Fun reads, as always. Love the intrigue.

And yes... D'Lar is perhaps more clever than some might suspect from the reputation that his people have. I find him to be a very interesting character.

Captain Blair would have done okay at the reception. Drake, on the other hand, would likely prefer some sort of interrogation/torture combo.

Okay, rather than make any attempt to cover this from beginning to end, I decided to simply include an interesting snippet from the event. Feel free to fluff this out as you like; if you need input from me as to what else might go on with the ambassadors (not a lot of note), feel free to post a question here or shoot me a PM. If there are interactions involving our officers, of course, feel free to post!

I don't want to dwell on this too long, as I'd like to bump the game date up - and truth be told, I'd like to get us to the summit date as soon as we can do it without rushing things too much.

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Captain's Mess, 19:25

So far, so good, Silas mused inwardly. Lieutenant Lasad and the Operations crew had done a bang up job considering the ridiculously short timeline and lack of proper facilities to work with. Rather than attempt to directly reproduce any native dishes from Kuldar or Rytain - and knowing the near-infamous issues that replicators had with trying to duplicate the subtleties of certain cuisine, this was quite wise - he had overseen a spread of mostly Terran dishes that coincided with the preferred tastes of the diplomats' cultures. There were tasteful decorations, and the Ops staff were gracious and helpful; in fact, they seemed to genuinely enjoy the experience.

Drake, on the other hand, found the entire affair to be rather grating. Escorting diplomats was one thing, but entertaining them was quite another... what he wouldn't give right now for some pirate vessel to shoot at! Silas knew full well that he had a tendency to be direct (Michelle would have accurately called him blunt), and polite chitchat did not come easily to him. But such were the perils of command, he supposed; the commanding officer of the Peregrine did his best to smile politely and conduct acceptable small talk while he ate from a plate that contained carefully measured portions representing both parties equally.

Truth be told, Silas had to consciously focus on the task at hand. There were quite a few items that rightfully demanded attention - even with his earlier "hide and do paperwork" session, there were still administrative items that needed his involvement or approval. His new Science and Engineering chiefs needed to be properly briefed on the mission. He wanted to draft a new framework for a policy on external personnel, and had some homework to do to see if there was any aid that he could render for Tesenblen. And, much to his shame, Silas had discovered just as he left his quarters that he had missed an earlier missive from Doctor Moore to update him on Commander Thorson's status. Silas mentally kicked himself for that one; he felt like he had not only let down his friend, but put a poor foot forward with his new Chief Medical Officer, who he owed a full acknowledgement (and sincere thanks) to.

It had been a long day, of course; the meetings could wait until Alpha shift tomorrow. For now, the most important duty was to play nice, smile, and laugh politely at jokes of questionable comedic value.

Tochi seems at home here, he thought to himself. Of course, that was no real surprise - the affable helmsman was more of a social butterfly than Silas would ever be... and he had a bit of a built in advantage, what with one of his previous hosts having been a diplomat herself (himself?). Indeed, Silas pondered wryly, if Lieutenant Zai managed to not let his association with his current Captain torpedo his career too much, the man had immense potential as a commanding officer in his own right.

The Captain shook his head with a near silent chuckle and allowed himself to return to the conversation that he had only been half paying attention to.

"...this is, of course, our nature," Threel pontificated. "and why the Ryatin are such an ideal fit for the Federation. We believe in the sanctity of all cultures, in the value of all viewpoints..."

The Ryatin ambassador was cut off with a chortle from D'Lar of the Kuldar. "Please, Ambassador - do not sully this room with such pt'lagh," the fierce representative growled. Threel wore a look of shock as D'Lar continued.

"The Ambassador here is a liar," D'Lar declared with as much emotion as one might use when declaring that the Terran sky was, in fact, blue. "Have a care to not listen too closely to his flowery words." Threel made a motion as if to protest, but D'Lar held up a hand. "Of course," he allowed, "I am also a liar. What diplomat could ever hold such a post if this were not the case?" He laughed at his own words, and wore a huge grin. Threel's expression relaxed into a bit of a sickly smile, though a cold glint remained in his eyes.

D'Lar's own expression grew more serious for a brief moment, and he uttered a cryptic statement. "Then again, at least I freely admit what I am."

The Kuldar took in the expressions around him, laughed out loud, and raised his cup. "A toast, then, to putting the best foot of our peoples forward. Perhaps when this is all complete, Ambassador Threel will have me visit his home for a holiday, and he can regale his family with tales of my own falsehoods!"

That provoked some laughter, and seemed to bring levity back to what had felt to be a dangerous moment. Silas did notice, however, that Threel did not seem to let the laughter reach his eyes.

The main ambassadors are Threel and D'Lar, on board the Peregrine. Eol, in his assistant GM capacity, has posted to give us a look in on how the remainder of the delegates (there are roughly a half dozen such personnel for each faction) are faring aboard the Coronado.

Sort of another silver screen, if you will - there is no way for anyone aboard our ship to interact with the goings on over there. Or no reason, anyway.

That was some game! I hate the "ice the kicker" timeouts at the end of a game, they feel so cheap... but clearly, they are worth the trouble.

I have to say - if the NFL is serious about concussion awareness and prevention, they cannot let that many shots to the QB's head go uncalled. It got called exactly once all night, and on an offsetting penalty play at that. What a joke.

Meanwhile, they call unsportsmanlike conduct on a guy for jumping up and down after a touchdown, thus keeping the "No Fun League" moniker safe.

Subject: confined to quarters

When confined to quarters, that would the person's own cabin. Confined to quarters is basically house arrest, but is an honor system type thing, since there are no security guards keeping you there. Of course, it's a ridiculously simple thing to track one's location via computer; I would imagine that one could also (very easily) ask the computer to notify you if someone that you confined to quarters violated that agreement.

I would think that Crane would be either (a) allowed to visit the replicators in the crew mess, and bring food back to her cabin, or (b) have food delivered to her via security. Honestly, I would suspect that option (a) would be in place, as "confined to quarters" is more on an internal punishment - you're making a point, but specifically not going through official channels.

Now, if she dallied, then there would be repercussions...

Subject: that hits the spot!

Loved the post about our new CEO looking for that special spot!

Re: ops and cross training... on a small boat like this, a fairly high percentage of people are going to, by necessity, have some rudimentary cross training. We already have enlisteds on the bridge, as there is simply no other way.

For example, PO T'Darin is a Tactical Specialist. But he's also a shuttlecraft pilot, and has been cross trained to serve the odd bridge shift at the CONN. Granted, he's never going to be asked to fly the ship in any sort of a pressure situation, but he can hold down the fort until a real helmsman arrives, and he can hold a gamma (or maybe even beta) watch.

The Ops personnel that are noted as being bridge certified have the training to man the Ops console on the bridge. They can raise shields, operate sensors/communications/tractor beams, handle damage reports, etc.

Ops would be most likely to be cross trained in engineering, as damage control is technically under ops - and many ops personnel are specialists with certain systems. They won't cut it as true engineers, but they know their own systems, and can at least assist with repairs and the like.

Dress uniforms - the long, colored versions.

Diplomatic communications would be secure and encrypted. Even if you knew when a call started and ended, you would not be able to listen in without some major black ops technology - and as Eol pointed out, doing so would be a MASSIVE no-no.

You could bug their rooms, of course, though I would expect anyone with espionage intentions to have countermeasures in place. And again, bugging a diplomat would be breaking the rules, and very sorely looked upon.

Glad you enjoyed the silver screen. Hopefully, having a bad guy aside from Jacobs makes this less of a pleasure cruise...

Hey folks, I have an important request.

Please do NOT skip the game day ahead without checking with myself or Eol. We covered this before in the Q&A (it's right there on page one), but people tend to forget.

Now, the current Odyson/Boo Boo timeline is fine. As it just so happens, there are no major events planned that would impact you folks meeting "tomorrow".

But typically, you should always check if you're going to "skip ahead" in time (even by a few hours) - and you should always, always check if you're going to go tot he next day.

You can backpost to your heart's content. But if, say, there was a change in the mission, we got attacked, somebody's superior officer changed the schedule, etc... an entire set of posts could be invalidated, and NOBODY wants that to happen.

I love sideline posts, sub plots, etc - just please be super careful when posting ahead, and again, clear it with me or Eol first. Thanks!

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Deck 2, Ambassador's Quarters, 16:55

The viewscreen flared to life, revealing a military officer wearing an unreadable expression.

The ambassador wore a frown. "Is everything in place, Captain?" he asked.

"Indeed it is," came the reply. "All preparations are complete. All systems are fully operational. They will not know what hit them."

The frown began to mellow a bit. "Good, good. And your crew? What of them?" he asked.

The officer on the screen stiffened. "Brother, this crew is hand picked, dedicated to the cause, and ready to die for it. They will not waver when the moment comes."

"Excellent," the ambassador replied. The frown was gone, replaced by a smirk.

"What of our agents on that end?" the captain asked.

The smirk on the ambassador's face deepened. "All are successfully in place. The Federation welcomed them with open arms - the fools have even granted me secure, encrypted communications with which to orchestrate our plans."

The officer shook his head. "How can they be so trusting?"

The ambassador chuckled. "I do not know. I believe that they underestimate the depth of our hatred for the enemy. They believe that talking will change things."

The captain made an odd noise. "There are many among us who believe the same."

The ambassador's expression grew dark once more. "And those are fools at best, traitors at the worst! But have no fear, my brother - our actions will gain so much more for our people that mere words could ever do!"

This time, it was the captain's turn to smirk. "I believe this more than anyone, else I would not be the one on this end of the operation, planning my own death!"

Now, the ambassador's face wore a touch of chagrin. "Or course, my brother... of course. I meant to offence to the glorious sacrifice of you and your crew. Your names will stand out among the history of our people."

The captain made a face as if to spit. "Bah. Few will know our names, and we will soon be forgotten. But we do this not for history's love, but for our people, and for final victory over the enemy."

The ambassador grew very serious. "Have no fear. The brethren understand the crucial import of your actions, how you will galvanize us at last to unite in victory. You will be lifted up!"

Mollified, the office changed course. "What of the Starfleet commanders? What impact will they have?"

The ambassador allowed himself a wide grin. "We could not have purposefully chosen better for our designs; they play perfectly into our hands. They squabble amongst themselves, they posture - each desiring to be the better of the two. They will not hesitate to act, and will follow our script as if cast to the role."

The officer allowed himself a grin of his own and gave a salute of a fist over his heart. "Excellent, brother. Strength and honor."

The ambassador nodded gravely and returned the salute. "And to you, brother. Strength and honor."

With that, the viewscreen went dark. The ambassador chuckled and moved to the replicator to see what it might hold of interest.

Also, I have a lot of a Captain's Mast piece ready for Chief Crane. I suspect that won't happen until the next game day, though... the timeline doesn't seem to lend itself to the Captain being notified of the issue, unless our new CSO wants to notify him at/after the reception.

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Captain's Ready Room, 13:30

Initially, Silas had immersed himself into the tedium of paperwork as a way to divert himself from the stress of the current situation. The fact remained, thought, that there WAS a lot to be done - cadets might dream of glory in a Captain's chair, but the reality was that there was a shocking amount of busywork associated with the office. Silas had a bad habit of occasionally putting off certain mind-numbing administrative tasks, but for the moment, he was thankful for them.

Indeed, the time flew, and Drake found himself glancing at a chronometer in surprise at just how many minutes had passed; at least he had been productive. Alpha shift was over, though, and it occurred to the Captain that he owed his new Chief Science Officer an apology - or, at the least, a proper welcome.

"Computer," he spoke, "please locate Lieutenant Sh'iraolnas."

=/=Lieutenant Sh'iraolnas is currently located in the Observation Lounge, =/= the feminine voice replied.

Silas put his PADD away and sighed. Time to play nice, he thought.

*********************************************************

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Observation Lounge, 16:15

Drake strode into the lounge, quickly spotting the Andorian woman seated at a table across from none other than his executive officer. A grin tugged at the corner of his mouth. Always the envoy, eh Tochi? he mused.

Taking a breath, Silas covered the distance to the table and cleared his throat. By the expressions on each of their faces, it would seem that these two had relaxed a bit in each other's presence. "Lieu... er... Tochi and... Asovil, is it?" He fumbled as he gestured to an empty chair. "Would you mind if I joined you for a moment?"

((OOC: assuming that he isn't told to shove off))

Drake pulled up a chair and arched an eyebrow at the food. "A bit early for dinner, isn't it?" he asked in a bit of a playful tone.

((OOC: whatever response...))

Leah chose the moment to appear. "And what would you be having, Captain?" she asked with a smile.

Silas returned the expression. "I haven't quite worked up an appetite of my own yet, Leah... a ginger ale will do just fine for now, please. And in here, you may call me 'Silas'."

She gave a mischievous grin. "One ginger ale coming up... Captain." With that, she was gone.

Drake shook his head and gave a rueful grin. "That woman knows full well that I have to consciously think about not being so formal in here... and so she makes it a point to never use my name. I think that she must be in league with Riva - I don't get an ounce of respect from either of them."

Focusing on his companions, he continued. "Now then, while I could share the contributing factors behind my behavior this afternoon, I do not wish to come across as making excuses. Lieutenant... er, Asovil - please accept my sincere apologies for slighting you earlier. While I am certain that Tochi has already done so, please allow me to formally welcome you aboard the Peregrine." The Captain extended his hand.

((OOC - assuming a handshake and some sort of polite response))

"Please bear with us," he continued. "In the last twenty-four hours, literally every department head outside of Tochi has been replaced - some under some very odd circumstances. As a scientist, I would wager that you likely share my lack of confidence in multiple coincidences... though I suppose that is neither here nor there. Regardless, we'll get you fully briefed and up to speed - please let me know if you need anything to get settled in, or if your department is lacking anything."

((OOC - any response))

Leah materialized with Drake's drink, and he took a sip before letting a grin play at the corner of his lips. "If the tales I hear are correct, I understand that you made quite an entrance today. If nothing else, I imagine that this will go down in your career as a rather memorable first day."

((OOC - any further dialogue))

Silas stood, drink in hand. "Well, I don't want to distract from your conversation too much. Again, welcome aboard, Asovil." The Captain took a step, then stopped and turned back. "Ah, yes... there is one more thing. If either of you are available, we will be having a reception in the Captain's Mess for our diplomats this evening at nineteen hundred hours. All department heads are invited - though not required - to attend. So if terribly polite conversation and native cuisine from the Rytain and Kuldar peoples sounds enticing, by all means, please feel welcome." The captain raised his glass in a final toast, then walked away.
