Noah is fine on height - 50th percentile (i.e. dead average). It's the weight that's the issue... he's a beanpole.

Topic: Some Secrets are Best Left Buried... Subject: pressing on
18th Olemra (Thirkday), 452 E.R. - dusk
Forest, northwest of Lynx, Ertain.
Aryan made it abundantly clear that she was ameniable to whatever Isaac felt was best, and since no one else voiced any objections, the party followed the young warrior's lead. The group pressed on, with the dual intentions of finding at least some sort of meager shelter, while placing at least some distance between themselves and the grisly remnants of their battle against the undead.
For the first time in many seeming hours, Shinara smiled upon the group. After following a bend in the road, the forest began to thin considerably, and the road began to slope gently downward. Upon further inspection, scattered lights became apparent - the valley containing the village of Filwood lay ahead.
If Isaac's memory served correctly, the valley itself was mostly unforested, though woods lay on both sides. Of course, the dying light and damnable mist made positive identification of such features impossible. The mist, if anything, lay heavier in the valley ahead (though Shianna understood that such was the natural way of things - nothing felt suspicious about that aspect).
Aryan chose that moment to pipe up. "I don't know about the rest of you," she spoke, "but I'd rather get out of the rain and sleep somewhere dry that spend the night under a tree here, worrying about what monsters might grab me in the middle of the night."

Topic: Continuing Where We Last Left Off Q&A Subject: yay power!
At seventh level, we have reached what I call "hero status". We can indeed do some real damage now, especially if we work together intelligently. We're in the real "sweet spot" for 2e D&D now - we can do really cool things, but it's not quite to the "yawn, another terrible monster" phase.
For the record, I have no doubt that Roger's beasties will be more than enough to keep us occupied.

Okay, cool. I'll whip up an "Arien votes to charge head on at the bad guys" post so as to keep this railroad headed in the right direction.

Topic: Failure to thrive Subject: yes
I'm hoping that's the case. I was always a very skinny child, and a picky eater myself (still am fairly picky).
Noah is walking more every day, he climbs ALL the time... pushes chairs to the dining room table so that he can climb up on it, for instance.
He's outgoing and friendly, makes eye contact, smiles readily, etc. Coos and babbles incessantly.
But it's sobering to look at some of the possibilities. You just assume that kids will be healthy, outside of minor ailments. It's tough to shake that "really bad things only happen to other people" mentality.

Topic: Failure to thrive Subject: Failure to thrive
That's the diagnosis today from the pediatrician. My son, Noah, is still just shy of twenty pounds in weight at fifteen months of age.
He's at the fiftieth percentile for height, but only the third for weight, and has been steadily, slowly, slipping in the latter area.
It's odd - he seems to be happy and healthy, is hitting all of his developmental milestones, is intelligent, is friendly, is energetic... but is a picky eater. If he eats five whole pieces of popcorn chicken, we consider it a good meal. An entire stage two baby food at one sitting? Woot!
So, they took three tubes of blood, asked a lot of questions, and began a battery of tests for scary-sounding things such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, kidney issues, liver issues, and more. Odds are excellent that we have a lot of tests and dotor's visits in the near future.
Sigh.
For those of you who do pray, your prayers would be greatly appreciated.

Topic: I'm rather new Subject: rules based
Welcome to the Inn!
If you are wanting to know how rules-based games work, the best advice I can give is to read some posts from a few of the existing games. Every DM is a bit different, but there are some basic standards:
1. The DM posts a setting, or an event.
2. Each player posts their character's actions (or intended actions).
3. The DM posts the results of those actions, and posts the next setting/advances the story/details the next phase of combat, etc.

Topic: Links! My kingdom for some links! Subject: oh, no
Page rank goes from 0 (nonexistent/new/banned sites) to 10 (Google, Yahoo, etc). It is an exponential (at least, to some degree) scale - a 5 has a much larger margin of popularity when compared to a 4 than, say, a 2 does when compared to a 1.
Google doesn't release the actual breakpoints, and it is thought that these change from time to time. Still, PR is a good rule of thumb when determining a site's popularity.

Topic: Links! My kingdom for some links! Subject: Links! My kingdom for some links!
Long ago, the Red Dragon Inn was a powerful force in the realm of D&D websites. Verily, we enjoyed a Google PageRank of 5!
Then, we were beset by plagues and server crashes. The webmaster moved us to a new system. Extended downtime caused a loss of membership, as well as a severing of links from other sites.
We have emerged from these dark times, stronger than ever before, with a website far better than we have ever enjoyed, even in the golden age of the Inn. And yet, we have fallen from grace - oour Google PageRank is now a mere 4... even a pitiful 3, depending on who you check with!
So, brave knights of the Inn, I offer a quest to those courageous enough to accept it. Go forth to other D&D and gaming sites, and spread the word of our Inn! Seek out links pages, and submit a link request, that we may see more traffic. Post links back to this fair Inn in forums where such postings are not frowned upon (in thy signatures, for example). Seek out sites of quality that may wish to trade links with the Inn!
Ahem. Please don't spam other sites, or post links where they are not welcomed. But if you know of a links page where we are not listed, your efforts to correct that would be much appreciated. We're always happy to trade links with *good* gaming sites (two page geocities personal sites don't count). Forum posts are great, as long as they are topical, and that forum does not mind. A mention of the Inn in your profile and/or signature is usually accepted by most boards... but again, check before you do such a thing.
Links to the front page are best (http://www.rdinn.net), but if you see a listing of, say, tools, dice rollers, etc, a link back to a given page or utility of the site is just fine, as well.
Thanks!

Fantasy surnames have been fixed. No more Axeaxe or Orcmaker. You'll get some repetition, since each sub-pool of fantasy names is relatively small, but it should be within acceptable bounds.
Oh, and we now have over 500 million possible combinations.

Topic: The Christmas Game! Subject: the Christmas Game!
Instructions: Reply to the thread by copying the questions below. Replace my answers with your own.
1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Are you kidding me? For Christmas, it has to be wrapping paper... a huge variety of it!
2. Real tree or Artificial? Artificial... I miss the smell of a real tree, but not the poking, nor the needles on the floor.
3. When do you put up the tree? Weekend after Thanksgiving
4. When do you take the tree down? Weekend after New Years. Well, that's when we start...
5. Do you like eggnog? Eyep.
6. Favorite gift received as a child? I dearly loved a stuffed Garfield the cat (came with his own Pooky the teddy bear). Also, I remember some Transformers that I played with for YEARS.
7. Hardest person(s) to buy for? My father.
8. Easiest person to buy for? My kids.
9. Do you have a nativity scene? Eyep. More than one.
10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail... but I tend to be late sending them.
11.Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Worst? I don't know if that's fair. I do remember the one that made me saddest: a stuffed Odie the dog. I had asked for the Garfield mentioned above, made a big deal about it. And on Chritmas morning, I unwrapped Odie. Tried really hard not to act disappointed. Fortunately, Garfield was waiting for me at my grandmother's house.
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? A Christmas Story, It's a Wonderful Life, White Christmas (different aspects... sue me).
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? August, thanks to my wife. Good that we start early.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? No. Er, I don't think so?
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Whew... another tough one. My wife always cooks a huge Chrstmas breakfast... blueberry muffins, biscuits and gravy, turkey bacon, and more. I LOVE that breakfast. I also love sampling all the different holiday foods.
16. Lights on the tree? Is this Communist America? Of course! a tree without lights... sheesh.
17. Favorite Christmas song? Again, can't pick one. O Holy Night, Angels we Have Heard on High. Edit: had to add Holly Jolly Christmas
18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Stay home! We see one grandmother on Christmas Eve, the other on Christmas Afternoon, but both are local. One day, we'll convince them to all come to our house (yeah, right).
19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? You know Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen. Comet and Cupid, Donner and Blitzen... but do you recaaallll.... the most famous reindeer of all? Rudoplh the red-nosed reindeer...
20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Star.
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas morning. No peeking until everyone is up (and mom and dad have the camera ready!).
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? Trying to get my finances in order.
23. Favorite ornament theme or color? Red and silver... but a Christmas tree is not complete without at least one blue light.
24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? I LOVE my wife's dressing (can eat it cold)... and I also love to sample lots of different holiday dishes.
25.What do you want for Christmas this year? Honestly? For my family to have a good Christmas, and for my wife and I to manage to stop worrying and just enjoy the season.

Topic: The Official Red Dragon Inn Name Generator thread Subject: lie and statistics
For the record, I prefer quality over qualtity. That being said, I thought that some of you might find this interesting:
Our generator is now capable of producing just north of 51 THOUSAND different given names for khords (more males than females, but still, a nice amount to go around). If you factor in the eight thousand or so possible surnames, you get:
Brace yourself.
Better than Four. Hundred. MILLION. possible combinations.
I'll be fixing the logic that allows you to get "Axeaxe" or "Goblinforger" for a fantasy last name, but still, bad and/or goofy names aside, this is an absolute TON of possible names. I'm pretty sure that if you need a name, you can make one with this utility.

Topic: Buried Secrets Q&A Subject: for future reference...
...I'd appreciate it if you would provide two, even three rounds' worth of combat actions in a given post. I won't be stopping combat every round for your input (or this adventure will takes ages). If I don't have set actions, I end up guessing, and your character might not do what you planned.
This is particularly important if your character has multiple roles in a given fight. For instance, I pretty much know that Isaac and Volkmar are going to attack the bad guys. There may be tactical considerations, but if all else fails, I can have them hit something, and I'll be pretty safe.
The same goes for Neri, except that she might want to lay some healing hands on someone every now and then.
Aryan has to pick and choose her spell uses, and then decide whether or not to wade in and start cracking heads with a sturdy piece of oak. I already know that her character only joins melee if necessary to defend herself, and emybear had let me know when she'd be casting another spell, if needed, so she was pretty well covered.
I had to ad lib a bit with Syana and Shianna this time... which turned out okay. But had the bard been taken down, I might have had one (or more) players angry at me for not having her retreat and use missile fire, or not having Shianna heal her.
The best thing is to post your intended combat actions, along with "if X happens, my character will try to Y. If A happens, she will do B instead." Also, for those of you who carry more than one weapon type, and for those who have spells, it would probably be wise to send me a PM with some "default actions."
I.e. - when to go into melee, when to hang back and fight from range, whether you'll fire into melee, what situations will lead you to cast spells, whether you prefer to burn all your spells right away, whether you prefer to conserve them, etc.
Thanks!

Hrmph.
I'll say this - I'll put the realistic version up against any that you'll find anywhere. Except for the rare odd result that has too many consonants together, the names are absolutely top notch.
