Topic: Star Trek: the Edge of Duty Q&A Subject: remember...
When posting, please include a time at the header of your post. That way, we can keep the timeline straight. As the game develops, you'll see subplots played out in posts - the timeline is crucial for organization.
Speaking of which, if you have not done so, you might want to check out the logbook feature in the Trek Tools. You'll see summaries of the various posts laid out here in chronological order - if you get confused, this is a great way to get the Cliff notes as to what is going on.
Logbook entries are made manually; feel free to add them yourself after you post, but I and the command staff will try to make sure that none get missed.
Dox, I didn't make a logbook entry for your post yet, as yours is missing a time.

Topic: Star Trek: the Edge of Duty Q&A Subject: nice!
Awesome to see a post from you, Dox! Good start. I can imagine that being the science guy on a patrol mission would get terribly boring.
I sent you a PM to address your issues.
Hey folks - just remember to try to keep questions about the game in this thread; we want the in-game posts to basically read like a story. I'm not complaining, Dox; just setting some basic expectations. I know that half of our crew has never played Trek before, or never in a play by post medium.

Topic: Star Trek: the Edge of Duty Q&A Subject: and we're a go!
Okay, ladies and gentlemen... we're a go!
I have properly linked the game thread to the Trek Tools, and have authorized players - you should now be able to add to the roster, throw NPCs up there, edit your entries, etc.
Feel free to post to the main game thread. Woot!
From here on out, please post questions about the game here, or direct them to myself, Eol Fefalas, or Tann Talas.
Only recruitment stuff goes in the recruitment thread.

USS Peregrine, Captain's Ready Room - 0645
Commander Silas Drake sat at his desk, PADD resting askance in front of him. Rather than focus on the dull, "nothing to report" reports on the device, the commanding officer of the Peregrine allowed his gaze - and thoughts - to wander along the various models that were mounted around the room. Each model was of a different style of vessel; while some were starships, others were antiques from Earth's past; nuclear powered, steam powered, even an ancient sail-powered vessel.
While he was indeed a student of military history, particularly that of ships, his interest in these vessels was more than purely academic. Each model was of a ship that one of Drake's ancestors had served aboard, and in turn, he felt a personal connection to each representation of the past. He took a quiet joy from the inspection, feeling a sense of belonging that was difficult to articulate. Indeed, he seldom spoke of it to anyone; it was a personal matter, something not to be shared lightly. Of course, she had understood...
His lip tightened for a moment, and the train of thought was forcibly derailed. Not today, Silas told himself. He picked up the PADD, took a sip of coffee, and resumed the inspection of the reports.
********************************
Roughly a half hour had passed when the comm chimed.
=/= Bridge to Captain. Starfleet Command is on a secure channel for you. =/=
Silas visibly perked up. Finally, something to do. The past six weeks had been dedicated to patrolling the shipping lanes in the Religus sector, and the detail had been... less than stimulating.
"Please patch it through to me here," he replied.
Momentarily, his personal viewscreen flared to life, revealing a human female in an admiral's jacket. Her brown hair was just beginning to show signs of gray, though Silas did not recognize her face.
"Good morning, Commander Drake. Admiral Harding here. I understand that your patrols have been uneventful?"
Drake nodded. "Indeed they have, Admiral. There is really nothing to report."
Harding nodded. "That is actually a good thing, Commander. Ideally, we were hoping that your presence would serve as a deterrent to piracy. I would chalk that up as a success."
Silas was less sure of that; in his mind, success would have been bringing pirates to justice, but he supposed that deterrence was better than nothing. "Thank you, Admiral." He answered. "I hope that you are right."
The admiral barely registered his response before she continued. "I have new orders for you, Commander. Proceed to Starbase 118, where you will rendezvous with the USS Coronado. The Coronado is on a diplomatic mission to broker a peace between the Kuldar and Rytain peoples. You will escort her in this mission. We do not expect any outright hostilities, but the Kuldar and Rytain have been in conflict for generations, so it is better to be prepared."
Harding paused, then continued in her orders. "You will accompany the Coronado to the Gamera system, where the peace summit will take place. Neither the Kuldar not the Rytain are Federation members, though the Rytain are seen as sympathetic towards us. The Kuldar, less so."
Her expression grew, if anything, more serious. "The success of this mission is imperative. Peace would stabilize this region, open new trade routes... and we know for a fact that there is Dilithium in this sector. If we could trade for it, or better yet, establish our own mining operations, it would provide a large boon to the Federation."
Drake nodded. "I understand the importance, Admiral."
Harding fixed the Commander with a steely gaze. "I hope that you do, Commander. There are members of Starfleet Command..." she trailed off for a moment before resuming. "Be sure that you stick to the script, Commander Drake. You are an escort here, nothing more. Ideally, you will have little to no interaction with the foreign dignitaries, nor will you be involved in the negotiations in any way. Your sole job is to ensure the security of the negotiations and of the Coronado. Is that clear?"
Silas felt his ears burn. The admiral could not have made her displeasure over his assignment more transparent. "Crystal clear, Admiral," he replied from a dry mouth.
She nodded. "Very well, then. You have your orders. Admiral Harding out."
With that, the viewscreen went blank, leaving Silas with his thoughts.

The Trek Tools don't allow you guys to add/edit roster entries for a very good reason:
I haven't yet set the game thread and the authorized players. Whoops. This is not a bug, it's a feature. We have had no players come in and add and edit people before, so to prevent that, security is set up.
Let me make an intro post to the game, and I'll authorize everyone; that will give you the ability to add to/edit the roster for our game.

Chief of Operations is a bridge crew character - one of the main characters in the game.
Have you ever watched Star Trek: the Next Generation? Commander Data was the Ops Chief of the Enterprise.
Operations is responsible for ship status, for coordinating with engineering, science, and tactical. They handle most communications, they make sure the ship is supplied... heck, the Ops Chief is nominally in charge of the cafeteria. lol

We need an Ops chief pretty bad. We can roll with an NPC, but I prefer a breathing person.
I've had one Innmate PM me some casual interest, but they have so far resisted my active recruitment. :/

Shucks, Roger. Thanks!
I'm trying to do some sitewide updates to get things to integrate a little better. I plan to swap out the popups there at some point, as they can get in the way of the links.
All in good time, I suppose.
Last night, I updated security on another half dozen scripts. I know that nobody sees that, but it's necessary work to be done to modernize the site and make it more scalable.

As I look, the only thing I see is that you have to be logged in. You should be able to add a character if you are logged in.
And, FWIW, I've added Duncan's guy to the roster.

Deep Space Nine is still under Cardassian control in 2365 (our game time). The station was built in 2346, which would make it too new for your character to have been born aboard it... but regardless, it does not come under Federation control until 2369.
You can, however, choose to be from any one of a huge number of Federation starbases. You don't have to go with a canon item, either; feel free to say something like "born on Starbase 212", and nobody will blink an eye.

Head to the Q&A thread for this game, and check the link to the Trek Tools (or grab it from the Armory dropdown in the main menu).
Choose USS Peregrine, go to roster; you can directly add your character there if you like - and you can just stub it in to start with, then edit later.
If you want to see some sample characters, instead pick the USS Discovery from the Trek tools and go to that roster. All characters are clickable.

Hi there, Dox!
First off, welcome to the Inn. Second, you need to come up with a basic concept. A name, a physical description, your character's personality, etc. I can help you put together a full bio/service record, and you'll be good to go.
Feel free to shoot me a PM, and we'll go from there.
