Subject: NPC Artie

OOC: I am NPCing Artie for the time being, as Bud is unavailbale to play for a bit.

----------------------------------------

Artie grinned at Jackie the jackobot's sense of humor; it was blatantly obvious that this sad group of unqualified Reds was nowhere near "superior" to such a long lived servant of Friend Computer.  Nor was it the fault of the ever logical robot that these trobleshooters were too stupid to follow simple instructions.  They KNEW that they didn't have a mission number, why try to sneak by with a team number?  Hopefully, they would learn the value of safe, predictable logic via electrical charge.

The Tech Services clone was less than enthused about the choice of the brash, loudmouthed military clone as the pilot; nobody had bothered to ask if Artie could drive (which he could).  But then, what did one really expect from such an impulsive, illogical group as this?

Ah, well.  At least the Hoverbot was quite freind;y and helpful.  Artie was eager to try out this new conveyance.  If all went well, perhaps the streets would soon be filled with friendliness hoverbots as an upgrade over boring autocars!

"Come, let us board!" Artie exclaimed.  "How about another song to help with morale?  Hmmm, what rhymes with 'hoverbot', I wonder?"

, I'm not saying those are bad.  It's just a different style of game.

In a lot of D&D games, death is an annoyance.  It costs you cash, time, maybe constitution.

In my game, death means the end of the line unless you are a MAJOR hero.

I prefer the heigtened risk of the latter, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the former.

> And if it isn't, then what kind of establishment is this?! Kith will just be irritated.

People who worship the goddess of the harvest and having babies aren't going to be dwelling on people who create undead abominations.  Sorry you're irritated.

Also, let me point something out - I try to present Audalis as a "realstic" fantasy world in my games.  So while you may play other D&D games where there are temples on every corner who will fix your boo boos for a few silvers, my games aren't like that.

Gib prays to his god, and WOUNDS CLOSE.  Folks, this is a MIRACLE.

Gib and Cedric are clerics.  Special warrior priests that are walking example of divine favor.

Most clergy are like in our world - they preach, they share wisdom, they do good deeds (according to what their religion views as "good"), but that's all.  When they tend the wounded, they do it with bandages, boiled water, and herbal poultices - not divine magic.

So you have this country priestess.  She probably is the town midwife.  People bring offerings of grain, milk, eggs, etc.  She grants little blessings and whatnot.

And that's that.  She almost certainly weilds no divine power; it would be incredibly remarkable for her to know anything about undead, let alone be battling them or whatever.

People like her are everywhere.  You guys are special.

Doing some quck homework, I'm not finding the COO's office specified.

I see three logical locations, in rough order of probability:

1) Deck 4.  Most of the department head offices are located here.  CMO, Counselor (which we don't have), CSO, FCO are all here.
2) Deck 5. A busy deck with a lot going on.  CTO office is here (due to Security and the brig) but I could see it going here with some Ops items here.
3) Deck 2. XO office is here, so are some Ops items.

Unless someone has some concrete data, I'd be okay with you picking any of these and calling it good.

Excellent first post!  I am super stoked to have you, Giddy.

1) You may leave the bridge, but Ops needs to be manned.  Feel free to sumon one of the NPCs to do it.

2) Tech specs are a far cry from full deck plans.  Every department head has an office to work out of.  I'm not sure as to the specific deck for ops, but either I or Eol will answer that.

3) A starship is always under command of a Captain - which can be confusing, since it is both a title and a rank.  Technically, either is okay to use in most situations.  If you have been given orders by the CO, it's best to refer to them as "Captain", as they are filling that role.  But no one on board would blink if you used "Captain", "Commander", or "Lieutenant Commander" as Zai's title, particularly if you were looking for him.

Face to face, you'd probaby use "Captain" or "Commander" only.  With him being the ranking officer, "Lieutenant Commander", if used to address him directly, might feel a little rude, like you are pointing not that he's not REALLY that senior of an officer.

Hope that helps!

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine; Deck 1 – Captain's Ready Room 13:15

Unpacking had taken little time, as Silas had packed rather lightly in preparation for a lengthy Court Martial and negative outcome that never materialized.  In his heart, he was still a bit giddy, and couldn't quite shake it.  It had seemed that all of the power of politics was arrayed against him, yet somehow, he had come through the other side smelling like a rose.

And then, his PADD had flared with a message from an anonymous sender.  The content was simple enough, an innocuous notification that a colleague had retired from active duty.  Of course, the fact that the colleague was Captain Joshua Jacobs had been enough to cause Silas to laugh out loud in the privacy of his own cabin.  Yes, the dog had managed to avoid prosecution due to his connections, but Starfleet couldn't countenance his continued service after the truth that had come to the light (despite the man's best efforts, it might seem), and Jacobs had taken an early retirement in what was surely an off the record deal.  Maybe it wasn't true justice, but it was so much more than Silas had ever dared to dream of, it felt like a victory for sure.

After emptying his duffels, Drake moved to the Ready Room, intent on returning the Golden Hind to her correct location on the wall, when news of the delay had come.  Exasperated, he blew out his breath and grabbed a PADD, intent on reading up on the personnel changes before he met any of the new department heads.

As he read Silas felt an ache or worry begin to grow in the pit of his stomach.  Once he reached the end of the current file, he got up and paced around the room for a few minutes.

Stop that, he could almost hear Michelle tell him.  Worrying over it won't solve anything.

While the imagined advice was of course accurate, it wasn't so easy to wave that concern away.  Even with the slight reduction in crew compliment, Drake will still responsible for better than sixty souls.  Once again, it seemed that Starfleet command was bound and determined to put all of the problem cases under one roof - his roof, to be precise.  Perhaps the idea was to lump them together, so as to minimize the potential damage they could do?

With a heavy sigh, Drake keyed the communicator.  "Captain Drake to Lieutenant Tal.  Lieutenant, pleae report to my Ready Room.  Drake out."

With the summons given, Silas sat back down to wait.  He would handle this like he handled all potential issues - directly.

--------------------------------------------------------

OOC: I am assuming that Tal will report as ordered.  If this is a problem, let me know and we will edit.

The hatch whooshed open to admit a tall, muscular woman who moved like a predator.  She snapped smartly to attention and offered a salute as she introduced herself, which Drake returned.  "At ease, Lieutenant - take a seat, please," he responded in as friendly a tone as he could muster.

"I see that you have been on board a few days; my apologies for not having met you before now, but I was unavoidably detained," he spoke dryly.  Judging from the gaggle of reporters on Starbase 118 and the fact that he couldn't seem to find a holovid without his face on it, Silas was fairly certain that everyone knew well of his trial.  Better to embrace that than to avoid it.

OOC: any response, or none at all

"First off, Lieutenant, I want to welcome you aboard the Peregrine.  I have taken the opportunity to review your jacket, and I must say - it certainly feels like this could potentially be a mutual fit.  You are a woman of action, I see... and this is a warship where your talents will be appreciated.  There are some impressive entries in your file, of that there is no doubt."

Silas paused for a moment, hating the things he was about to say.  "With that said, I would be remiss if I failed to share my concerns.  I believe in being honest and forthright, and I expect the same from my officers."

A moment's hesitation more, and Drake dove right in.  "Lieutenant, you have been through trauma that I won't pretend to be able to imagine, and I appreciate that you have made it through to the other side.  Yet, you were clearly not unscathed.  I see that you have been on medical sabbatical for two years, and that we are your first assignment after that.  I see the diagnoses, and I appreciate how hard you must have worked to reach this point.  And yet..." his voice trailed off as Silas attempted to avoid sounding like an attacker.

"As I stated, Lieutenant, this is no medical vessel, no diplomatic ship.  We are a warship, and we spend a great deal of our time on the fringes of Federation space.  There are no small number of sentients that bear us ill will, and the time will come - it is a question of 'when', not 'if' - that you will be required to face violence with violence.  When that moment comes, I must be able to trust implicitly that there will be no hesitation, no lack of decisiveness.  I need to know that you will act, that I can count on you.  There are sixty-five souls on this ship entrusted to me, and when that times comes, they are entrusted to you.  So be certain before you answer, Lieutenant - can you handle this?  Are you truly ready?"

OOC: a chance to explain

Silas nodded.  "I will take you at your word, Lieutenant, and trust that you are right."  The Captain stood and offered his hand.  "Again, I want to welcome you aboard the Peregrine.  I look forward to serving with you."  Salutes were exchanged.

"Dismissed," Drake spoke.

As Tal left, Silas shook his head.  He would take her at her word - but for the benedfit of all, he would also keep an eye open.

It sounds to me like something ought to break, some supply wire get crossed.

Haemis - if you're going to play, perhaps engineering can find something to do to slow us down?  Or Giddy, perhaps there is a refit.resupply issue for ops to deal with?

If not, I'm sure the rest of us nerds can come up with something...

Otherwise, it seems like you're all on the same page - follow the road to the west, look for clues.  Okay.

When do you leave?

1. Immdiately.
2. After rest (which would put you at evening)
3. First thing in the morning.

Crandal is a small, rural town, of that there is no doubt.  As such, there is no large temple or the like.  There is a small graveyard near a simple wooden church with markings identifying it as belonging to Miellyah.

Miellyah, goddess of hearth and home, of fertility and growth, is very commonly worshipped - especially among country folk.  As you approach, a middle aged woman in a long, simple white dress greets you.

"You must be the heroes the town is buzzing about?  I can't imagine that there are two groups with both a cidal wizard AND a cat-man warrior?"  She smiles.  "The Mother's blessings be upon you.  I am Elia.  What can I do for you?"

Elia shakes her head when questioned.  "Death is part of the natural order of things.  Eventually, we all die.  But this.. this is not natural.  I know not of dead rising from the ground, let alone attacking and killing good people.  This is foul, evil magic for sure - something that I have never seen before, and if the Protector is kind, I'll not see again."

Any inspection will reveal only one fresh grave; Elia explains that it belongs to an elderly baker who died in his sleep four days past.  If there is a conection to last night's events, it would seem to be a convoluted one, at best.

It is now slightly past midday, though the mist still hangs heavy, distorting the light and making the world feel dim.
