Topic: D&D Annoyances Subject: D&D Annoyances
Share with us the things about D&D (can be any edition) that annoy you!
I'll start this one off with a pet peeve - in 3e (and 3.5e): masterwork items.
Sure, it's a decent idea - items that are so superbly crafted that they offer a bonus to their functionality. And supposedly, they are harder to get, since they cost so much more.
But in practice? Everyone who doesn't have a magical item instead has a masterwork item. I mean, I read modules online (and printed rulebooks and supplements) that feature pirates with masterwork cutlasses, cutpurses with masterwork daggers, golbins with masterwork spears. Give me a break!
Of course, D20 seems to treat all equipment purchases as being made from the D&D Wal MArt - everything is always available... even masterwork items. Sure, it's probably not SUPPOSED to be that way, but that's how books and supplements seem to treat it.
Hmmm... does this count as two gripes from me?

Topic: A Cold Day in Hell Q&A Subject: nice healing!
The medic with the changing name did a fantastic job on the two soldiers wounded in battle. If you get out of this alive, you owe her a steak dinner.
Now, team status follows:
LT Kernan: mild cold damage.
PFC Pearson: moderate cold damage.
WO Blake: minimal cold damage, minimal combat damage.
CPL Hatherford: moderate cold damage, mild combat damage.
CPL Hart: moderate cold damage
SSG Kane: moderate cold damage
CPL Johannsen: serious cold damage
SGT Lee: mild cold damage
Let see some posts, folks... let me know what the new plan is. Go back and finsih exploring with the same fire teams? Reconfigure things a bit? Play with the radioactive pieces? Share some hugs? Something else entirely?

South Hallway, Antarctic Research Facility 36, Antarctica
Fire Team B
"Sergeant Kane," the Lieutenant speaks on the open frequency. "We've sustained some injuries here. Secure a path to the rendevous point and meet us there. Over."
Kane acknowledges the order, and in little time, has his fire team reassembled. Fire Team B finds nothing of real interest on their way to the entrance foyer. It is a short, easy stroll through empty hallways.

May 8th, 2025 - 1807
Garage, Antarctic Research Facility 36, Antarctica
fire Team A
Pearson secures the garage, but there is nothing else of true interest to see. Rather than risk his wounded rangers, Kernan orders every member of the team to rezvendous.
The hallway outside of the garage is noticeably warmer than the large room from which Fire Team A has just left. Interestingly enough, there is no sign whatsoever of fire here - not even any traces of soot from around the door.
There is little time to ponder this, however - the door to the connecting passage reveals yet another scene from a nightmare.
This hub appears to be the scene of some violent past conflict. Bullet holes riddle the area, and there is a great deal of blood staining both the floor and the walls. The sickening smell of putrefying flesh hangs in the air here. Bloody boot and foot prints move toward all three exits here, and a couple of large, dark smears suggest that at least two bloody corpses were dragged down the west passage into the observatory.
Fortunately, there is no contact with anything - person, creature, or automation - and fire Team A soon finds themselves in the main hallway with Fire Team B.
Corporal Johannsen renders excellent aid she to both of the rangers injured in battle. The main hallway, for now, is quiet.

Topic: Star Trek: Operation Persephone Subject: enter the Rug
Stardate: 2374.08.31
Starbase 10 - corridor outside of main security - 0900
A huge, hulking, tiger-like beast stalked down the corridor, its foul mood apparent to everyone in its path. Not surprisingly, the various staff found reasons to be places other than the creature’s direct path, not that it seemed to pay them any mind one way or the other. Instead, the large felanoid clad in a gold Starfleet uniform top scowled darkly at the PADD it clutched in its right paw as it covered the distance to main security.
The door hissed open, admitting the brooding kzinti, but to his disappointment, everything appeared to be in perfect order. Denied the opportunity to vent his displeasure on some poor enlisted lackey, Lieutenant Commander Rrowl moved directly to the office designated “Chief of Security” and began removing his few personal possessions.
The chore took very little time – Rrowl was not one for collecting knickknacks, and he hadn’t been stationed at Starbase Ten for very long. It wasn’t the abrupt reassignment itself that had the kzinti in a foul mood; on the contrary, he welcomed the opportunity to leave this handholding guard posting behind for the opportunity to assume meaningful duties aboard a warship. No, it was more the fact that he would be expected to babysit some wet-behind-the-ears monkey even as they flew into situations that would likely end their lives. Rrowl did not fear dying, but he loathed the idea that he would be forced to do so to no real purpose.
As the station’s outgoing security chief packed the last of his sparse possessions, a man in the doorway cleared his throat. Rrowl looked up, his teeth slightly bared. The human lieutenant, also clad in security gold, blanched slightly due to the fact that he was well aware that kzinti did not show their teeth in a gesture equivalent to a human smile – this sort of expression instead meant aggression and anger. Nevertheless, the man held his ground and spoke. “Congratulations, Commander Rrowl. Just what you were hoping for, right? A posting on a warship, I mean.”
Rrowl snorted. “Hardly, Lieutenant Giles,” he replied. “I had hoped to gain a posting on a vessel with a known – or at least experienced and capable – captain. Instead, I understand that my new commanding officer has yet to even attain the rank!” He shook his head. “If our commander is so inexperienced, odds of us surviving combat – or at least, being effective in it – decrease, I fear.”
Impudently, the lieutenant chuckled. “Fear? You? Commander, I thought you weren’t afraid of anything!”
Rrowl’s eyes narrowed. “Watch your tongue, monkey, lest I take it with me as a trophy! You know I do not fear death; I do despise the idea that it be for naught.”
Unperturbed, Giles continued. “You know, I think that I will almost miss those threats. I’ll say this – whoever replaces you just won’t have the same effect when they toss around extra shifts or KP duty as consequences!”
At that, Rrowl’s ears flickered slightly – a kzinti gesture of laughter. “I will miss you, as well, lieutenant. Hopefully, my replacement will find this department in better shape than did I.”
Giles nodded; Rrowl was intimidating, and you didn’t want to be on the wrong side of his temper, but he was a fine officer, and had indeed drastically improved security on Starbase Ten. He genuinely would miss the shaggy security chief.
“Well, best of luck to you, Commander Rrowl,” spoke Giles. “Cheer up; you never can tell. Just because this is MacTavish’s first command doesn’t mean he won’t be capable.”
Rrowl froze and fixed a predatory stare on the lieutenant. “What did you say?” Met with a blank stare, he prompted. “MacTavish? As in, Jack MacTavish?”
Giles fumbled for a moment as he double checked his own PADD. “That’s right, sir… MacTavish, Jonathon R. XO of the Warden, formerly of the Discovery…”
Rrowl held up a paw as his ears broke into a fit of twitching. “Enough! I know him well. This changes everything!”
Suddenly, Rrowl’s entire disposition had changed. We will kill many of the bastards, Jack, you and I, the kzinti thought to himself.
As it turned out, this was exactly the posting that Rrowl had been waiting for.

...if you are planning to follow the format we used in discovery, cap'n, you might want to point out that a character's inner thoughts should be set aside in italics:
What the heck is going on? johnson wondered.
Also, no crazy font color changes. Keeps things from looking like a christmas tree.
Gavison should certainly have made captain by now.

Topic: A Cold Day in Hell Q&A Subject: robo pieces
I'll be honest - you guys are more injured than I really expected that you'd be at this point. Not sure why I expected that, though, due to the lethality factor I'm tossing around.
One word of hope - I handle healing a bit differently than standard D20 modern. Hit point regen has to do with your total hit dice, not just a one die roll.
Now, as for robot parts - there are scattered pieces of the robot in a nice radius around the garage. The base is lying on the ground, largely intact, as are both limbs (gripping arm and cannon). The head is badly damaged, due to the bulletholes in it (and the force of the blast). most of the torso itself is a melted wreck.

Your equipment has been loaded into a bin on the APC; there is no reason you cannot retrieve it.
I think that Eol was looking more at the "do I really want to wade into melee while badly wounded?" more than "I think I need a blaster, since my stuff is gone."
