Topic: Star Trek: No Good Deed Q&A Subject: logbook
Fixed the time for Callie.
The Bob posts failed for you, Alacrity, becuase you did not pick a main character for them (first dropdown box at the top of the screen).
As an aside, "Featured characters" are those that appear WITH the main character. So if I make a log entry for Captain Blair as he talks to Commander Kennedy, I pick Blair as the main character, and Kennedy as featured character #1. No need for me to pick Blair twice.

Topic: Star Trek: No Good Deed Q&A Subject: huh
I'll edit the logbook booboo by Merideth, and check Alacrity's. Huh.
Brianna - I was pretty certain that I sent you a detailed PM. You have not submitted ANY sort of character concept to me. Until you do so, and I approve it, you are NOT in this game.
From what I can tell, you have ignored every single post I have made, and are now ignoring my PMs. I do not appreciate you asking another player to edit thier NPC as a way for you to try to circumvent the process I have put in place.
The proper way to handle this would have been "Hi emybear, t_catt. I like emybear's NPC, and was wondering if I could play that character?"
***NOT***
"Hey emybear, change your NPC's name so I can play her. Hey emybear, as soon as you change it, I can play."
Have I been somehow vague or unclear?
FOR THE LAST TIME: IF ANYONE WISHES TO PLAY IN THIS GAME, THEY MUST SUBMIT A CHARACTER CONCEPT TO ME VIA PM, AND I MUST APPROVE IT BEFORE THEY MAY PLAY IN THIS GAME.

Topic: Are you a fan of Loaded Dice? Check out these things you can do to help! Subject: Are you a fan of Loaded Dice? Check out these things you can do to help!
Are you a fan of our webcomic, Loaded Dice? Would you like to help spread the word? If so, please consider the following suggestions - or post your own here.
- Every time a new comic is posted, I submit it to reddit. Every now and then, someone reads it before it falls off of their front comic page, they like it and vote for it, and we end up getting a fair little traffic spike from that. A few votes would pretty much ensure that we'd get similar traffic every time.
To vote for us on reddit, scroll down to the bottom of our comic page. There are a series of icons - a checkerboard, a little guy with a shovel, etc. The last one is a little alien - this is reddit. Click it, login (if you need to) or register for an account (it's free), then vote us up. Once you have an account there, it taken about two seconds to do.
Of course, feel free to use the other icons, too - I've just noticed that reddit is good for us.
- Vote for us in the top 100 webcomics list. You can do this once per day, you do not have to register, it takes about three seconds to do this. The button for this is located just to the right of the Loaded Dice logo itself.
- Become our fan on Facebook! Roger Briant has set up a facebook fan page for Loaded Dice... please check us out at this fan page link.
- Tell other folks about us. Share the comic with your gaming group buddies. Email it to your friends. Post a link on forums that allow such things. We have various banners and buttons for links, as well... if you'd like one of these, drop me a line.
Of course, above all, keep reading regularly, and send us feedback on the things you like and don't like!

Topic: Star Trek: No Good Deed Q&A Subject: logbook!
Very nice. Space and cocoa.
Okay, folks. We have right at a dozen players, some of which are involving NPCs in their posts. Posts are getting more frequent; soon, we'll have lots of people doing different things at different times of the day. How do we keep it all straight?
Allow me to introduce you to the logbook. Go to the Trek Tool, click on USS Discovery, click the logbook.
Whenever you create a new post, check to see if the timeline already accounts for it by checkingthe logbook. If not, please create a logbook entry.
This consists of your character (chosen from a dropdown box), a location, a time, a very brief summary of the post, and any other characters that may be involved (again, chosen from dropdown boxes).
Right now, it's no big deal. Trust me, in a few days, someone will post a conversation involving someone else's character, only to discover that they were not, in fact, on the bridge, but in engineering instead.
As GM, I'll try to keep the logbook straight, but if you log yor own posts (if necessary), it will make things much easier on everyone.
Thanks!

Nice try through, Merideth. I read your post above and thought "waitaminute... they always tell the turbolift where to go in TNG!"
But you corrected it already.

Glad that you liked it. We don't have to have 100% of all areas of the character sheets done in order to play, but I would of course like them to get that way as soon as we can.

The Academy is a four year program. However, do note that many Academy enrollees have already completed some college and/or have a degree - especially those in more "learned" disciplines (engineering, science, medicine).
So a new graduate would typically be in their early to mid twenties.

I plan to try to have an intro post or two up today or tomorrow. We have filled every major role, plus a couple of minor ones, so I'd say that we are ready to go.
Please keep an eye on the Q&A thread - it will become much more important than this one (since this thread will probably die out before terribly long).

Today's comic is up and live. Special thanks to Alacrity for the concept (and most of the dialogue) of this strip.
Everyone do the happy dance with us - #25 is a small milestone! We have now reached twelve and a half weeks of uninterrupted updates, and have had almost sixty-five thousand page views of the comics.
As always, please feel free to comment, critique, and criticize here.

Eol hit the nail on the head - I do not believe that the unis have pockets at all. Some sort of small pack would be fine, espcially when leaving the ship (maybe not while sitting at a bridge station).

Topic: Star Trek: No Good Deed Q&A Subject: info you should know
As you all know, I am the GM of this game. I am playing the role of Captain Blair, but understand that he is as much a plot device as a player character.
Commander Avanti (Alacrity) and Lieutenant MacTavish (Eol Fefalas) are the executive officer and second officer of the USS Discovery, respectively. This means that they have full authority to issue orders to anyone on the ship, if need be. There are other characters on board (the chief engineer and the ship's doctor are good examples) who technically outrank MacTavish, but in the absence of Blair or Avanti, he is still in charge - Blair, Avanti, and MacTavish are line officers. If you are unfamiliar with the concept, Google can be your friend (check "line officers" and "chain of command"). In the absence of the above, any officer may be given command of the bridge, and thus, the ship - but this is typically designated ("Lieutenant Ames, you have the bridge").
Somewhat coincidentally, Alacrity and Eol Fefalas make up what I refer to as my "command staff". While I am the only person who knows the full details of what will happen in our main plotline, I do share relevant details with the two of them, allowing them to act as co-GMs. If they see an area of the story lagging behind or wandering off into a tangent, they are fully within their rights to help get things back on track. This may result in one of them making a post or contacting you privately. Listen to them - they have the full authority of a GM in pretty much all matters.
Finally, my version of Trek is slightly more military than that often portrayed on the various TV shows. Unless a superior officer has given you leave to act more informally, assume that you should saulte, make formal reports, etc. Pay attention to the standard forms of address (which basically mimic those of Her Majesty's Navy):
Superior officers are always referred to as "sir" (unless you are using the proper rank address below). This is regardless of gender. Likewise, the term "mister" is pretty universal, regardless of gender.
All flag officers are always called "Admiral", regardless of grade. A commodore is called "Commodore".
The captain (or commanding officer) of a ship is always called "Captain", regardless of grade (such as when a commander is in charge of a smaller vessel).
A full commander is always called "Commander".
A lieutenant commander is called "Commander", unless a captain (or higher) elects to refer to him as "Mister". However, doing so is giving offense, as it indicates that the lieutenant commander is a junior officer.
Junior officers (ensign up to lieutenant) are referred to by their ranks or by "Mister" Lastname.
Cadets or warrant officers are referred to as "Mister" Lastname.
NCOs are addressed solely by their rate (the term rate is preffered over "rank" for enlisteds). It is appropriate to address a petty officer (of any grade) as "Petty Officer". A chief petty officer is referred to as "chief", a senior chief petty officer is referred to as "senior chief", and a master chief petty officer is referred to as "master chief".
In addition, note that chief petty officers are expected to assist in the training of junior commissoned officers, so while the lowliest ensign may technically outrank a chief, the ensign would be wise to pay proper respect!
Enlisteds are typically referred to as "crewman" or "yeoman", without the last name attached.

We have our ops officer.. the post goes to another newbie, Randel.
The only department head position still open in ship's counselor. If you are still interested in playing, let me know... we can look at a suporting role for you in pretty much any department.
I am beginning to populate the roster insode of our trek tools (see the link in the Q&A thread for the game). I plan to have an intro post of two done today, and hope to have the game open for general posting very soon.
Please note that several of you still have some tweaks to do in order to finsih up your character sheets. If I have not let you know that your final sheet is accepted, please touch base with me so that we can work out what still needs to be done.

Topic: 3.5 Rule questions Subject: true
Good catch, Loki - some spells do not have a material component at all, so the symbol may not be needed with those.
I'd personally be a jerk and not let them, but that's just me.

Topic: 3.5 Rule questions Subject: hmmm
I am pretty certain that a clieric loses spell abilities in 3.5 if the symbol is lost - but they are cheap and easy to replace if you use rules as written.
I'm not certain about 3.5e, but historically, a character could always research a lower powered version of a spell. If you are trying to do less with an existing spell, it would be a total judgement call by the GM.

Topic: To boldly go (again) where no one has gone before... Subject: character concepts
Please PM character concepts to me. Before you will be granted any place in this game, I will need to approve at least a basic concept (name, species, gender, role applying for, a brief personality blurb). For final approval, we'll need a full character sheet - but don't worry, I will be happy to help you fill out service records and similar "complicated" items.
If I have not received a character from you via PM (and approved said concept), you do not yet have a place in this game!
I see a couple of people assuming that simply because they posted that they would like to play, they are in. This is not necessarily the case. If you don't have a PM from me confirming that your character concept has been accepted, then your character concept has not been accepted.

Thanks for all of the responses! I have sent PMs to several people in regards to various character concepts. As I get responses back to my satisfaction, I will post updates here.
I may begin a post or two in the main game thread by way of introduction, but don't worry about posting until I give you the green light.
Before you make your first post, be sure to check out the Q&A thread to be sure that you understand the posting format.
