O'Brian's Pub - 12:05 PM

The band of survivors huddled at the still locked front door of O'Brian's Pub. Tommy Murphy was surprised at just how difficult it was to force his hand to unlock, unbolt, and open the door; in the end, though, the potential terror of outside was deemed less than the certain death of waiting inside.

The companions made their way, single file, up the short flight of steps that led to street level. The sun was bright and harsh, causing everyone to blink against the glare; ten days of poor lighting made even a slightly overcast day seem like staring too close to the sun. A slightly cool wind blew leaves down the street in a grim reminder that winter was coming soon.

Strangely, the rustling of those leaves was the only sound to be heard aside form their footsteps. There was no traffic, no voices, no human noises at all. The street itself was desolate and empty, with a few overturned cars - some burned - blocking the way. However, such obstacles were easy enough for individuals on foot to maneuver around.

With no immediate threat presenting itself, the group sets out, headed east on Cornelia. As they picked their way past a gutted pickup truck, a white sedan with a blue stripe (and disctintive light bar on top) comes into view - a police car had crashed into a building near the corner of the street. The driver's side door is open, but no occupant is apparent.

Suddenly, motion becomes apparent from one of the alleys. It is a human form, but slightly hunched... and it simply feels wrong. It takes a step, pauses, then makes a pained shriek and charges at a dead run towards the survivors!

Since there is some confusion, I'm going with what Eol has posted.

Head east on the current street (Cornelia), hit the Save Rite pharmacy, then the Ace hardware (since they are almost next door to one another). Getting to Wrigley fromt here will be a little backtracking; up to you guys.

If I don't hear otherwise (and soon), I'm goign to assume this.

Note that I'll re-read posts to see who has what weaponry, but you guys didn't make this overly clear. For instance, I don't see anyone claiming ownership of the crowbar. If nobody does so, I'll consider it left behind.

I said I'd collaborate if/when you died. I never said it was certain (only likely).

A word of warning to the party: be careful what you assume. We've all seen zombie movies, so I'm sure you have an idea of what to expect, but don't think you know it all. My zombie apocalypse might be a bit different than those you've seen on TV. Also, know that metagaming has always been a huge pet peeve of mine - don't have your characters act on knowledge they can't have. Not saying anyone has, just a reminder.

Finally - I don't see how Murph can carry the shotgun and the crowbar AND the bat. I mean, he can, but he won't be effective in combat. Let me know who is carrying what, weapon-wise, for each party member.

Topic: Continuing Where We Last Left Off
Subject: a bad feeling

When the doors whooshed open, Arien clutched his flaming longsword even tighter as he prepared for the attack that was sure to come.

Only, it never did.

The scene was a nightmare come to life - the poor priests have been massacred, their bodies deflied and dismembered. It was enough to turn even a hardened warrior's stomach.

Something caught the knight's eye - every dead priest was holding a knife or cleaver. What manner of evil is this?, he wondered. Had the priests fought for their defence, they would have surely used staves, hammers, or maces. Even if one or two elected to use a proscribed blade, there was zero chance that they all would have. Furthermore, the blades were still held tight; this made no sense. Typically, when a person died, their muscles went slack. Certainly, some might still hold a item, especially if the tendons were quickly cut and prevented somehow from loosening, but for all of them?

No, this felt horribly wrong. Arien was filled with a sense of foreboding... this felt like a message, or worse yet, a trap.

Carefully, the knight advanced, taking care to circle the perimeter of the room. "Something is amiss here," he warned, "even more so than meets the eye." Quickly, Arien shared his fear regarding the knives.

The giggle of the girl added even more otherworldly horror to the scene. There was no cause here for mirth - only madness or the purest form of evil could muster such a reaction. Arien's thoughts flew to the dream they had lived, where they had all perished. The giggle felt like something that would have come from the dream.

"What evil hides here?" he demanded aloud, weapons at the ready. "Show yourself!"

I have given you guys a freebie you didn't ask for. Don't expect favors like this often.

I have marked on your map (page 4 of this Q&A) where an Ace hardware exists (the only one within our map area, though there are other hardware stores not far away).

Next time, I'll wait until the zombie rush is on you and then let you know that sure, there was a hardware store right around where you were going...

I did link the wrong comic above (fixed), but the reddit link is correct. "Tentacle Monsters, Anyone?" is not the actual title of the comic - but reddit titles seldom are. It says "rdinn.net" because that is the domain - not the actual link back to our comic. If you click the title there on reddit, it takes you to the comic in question.

Call it a minor advertising ploy. Or something.

Here, guys - I have made you a map with local pharmacies, the closest grocery store, Wrigley field, and a 7-eleven marked on it. There are tons of bars and souvenier stores (Cub's jersey's and tees aplenty) on Clark and Addison by Wrigley.

You won't get this level of detail all the time, but the party members who live locally would know where all of these are.

Pharmacies lie about four blocks from here, one east, one south. Wrigley is about two blocks north. There are no major stores nearby.

Assume that while yes, she is sick, she can and does both get up and move. She doesn't need to be in combat right now... may need a few more breaks than the rest of you, but she's not incapacitated.

Feel free to write her into the next scene; she can backpost if she wants to cover the basement.

Edit: Merideth added to her Q&A post. Here ya go:

You may be able to locate some stale pretzels and a few peanuts. Thre are no significant food supples here.

You wanna fashion a one-use dagger (if you stab with it, count on it breaking)? Be my guest. Shouldn't be overly hard to do.

Not sure what size purses Emily and/or Amber might be carrying, but I don't see any large bags here (unless you can see something that reasonably would be here that I'm missing).

Bar stool legs would make for more formidible weapons than pool cues, and are probably easier on the hands than two by fours.

No usable food or water up here.

O'Brian's Pub - 11:45 AM

With the decision made, Tommy Murphy used his crowbar to pull back the makeshift barricade that had not only kept out any intrusion, but was now indirectly contributing to the certain death of the basement surviviors. With a firm grip on the heavy tool, he yanked the door open, prepared for the worst.

All things considered, the pub itself was in better shape than Murph had figured it might be. Yes, there were broken windows, and yes, the front door hung off of its hinges. Much of the furniture was overturned, and there was a fair amount of broken glass, but by and large, the damage was cosmetic.

A huge, brownish-red stain marred the wooden floor; Murph tried to not dwell too heavily on whose blood that might be. Of Patrick O'Brian, there was no sign.

Quickly, the mechanic set about his intended task to search for weapons - and the quest was a success. O'Brian's Browning BPS - a ten guage, pump action shotgun - lay on the floor near the bar. A quick examination revealed that the shell in the chamber had been discharged, but that four more remained in the weapon. Searching behind the bar was similarly fruitful - not only did Murph locate the Louisville Slugger bat that the owner kept here for intimidation purposes, but also a nearly full box of shutgun shells for the Browning. All told, there were twenty-two rounds of double aught shot; more than enough to handle any immediate threat.

A glance out of the window reveals streets empty of any traffic, vehicle or foot. As a matter of fact, there are no signs of life whatsoever.

Tiamat's character has been in the basement the entire time. Since nothing has happened yet, there's just no sense in working up some "survivors" meet angle right now. Easier to just have you all together.

Guys, I hate to be a drag, but please note that I'm a teensy bit concerned at where we went over the past few posts.

Please remember our posting requirements for the game: 2-3 short paragraphs per post. You don't have to write a novella like Eol or Merideth, but you do need to do more than one sentence or two.

I do not care for "chat like" games, which is what this one is develving into. Have your character say their piece, describe what they are thinking, etc. If there's not enough to hit 2-3 paragraphs, either work on your post some more, or wait. If you are wanting to RP a conversation with another character, get in touch with that player (via chat, PM, email, whatever) and figure out who's writing what.

Do not use the forum to post 1-2 sentences back and forth. I don't want to see ten new posts in an evening, with nine of them being from two players talking back and forth.

Thanks!
