Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine, Captain's Quarters - 1910

Lieutenant Tesenblen had left, his excitement fairly palpable. Just for grins, Silas had called up the aconitum lycoctonum - and grimaced when he discovered that yes, it was on the prohibited list for cultivation aboard a starship. Fortunately, it seemed that the truly great risks came from handling (or ingesting) the plant, so he felt reasonably sure that the safety issues could be mitigated, and no one would be the wiser. After all, me mused, it's not too often that the hydroponics inventory gets audited.

Setting that aside, Drake called up the file of Lieutenant Louise Moore, the new Chief Medical Officer. By the looks of it, Doctor Moore had a fair amount of varied experience in Starfleet, and was more than qualified for the job. As he read, the door chime sounded yet again, causing Silas to grit his teeth in annoyance.

Does no one on this blasted ship take their shore leave? he wondered, even as he smoothed his expression and spoke permission to enter. The door slid away to reveal Doctor Moore herself, accompanied by a crewman.

"Hello, Captain. I'm Dr. Louise Moore, a pleasure." she spoke.

Doctor Moore was a decidedly... average woman, appearance wise. Blue eyes, brown hair scattered with white worn in a bun, average height, average build. Still, her eyes glittered with intelligence, and Silas stood, offered his hand for a shake, then gestured to an available chair. "Welcome aboard, doctor," he spoke by way of greeting. "The pleasure is mine."

Indicating the PADD, he spoke. "I was just reviewing your service record; please forgive me, but I had no idea that Starfleet was swapping out half of my department heads in the same day, so I'm a bit behind on the new personnel files. I see that you are well traveled, though I believe that the Peregrine is the smallest detail you'll have been assigned to." He shot her a crooked grin before continuing. "Indeed, I wonder who you managed to annoy to get sent here?"

((OOC: assuming a response, though not necessary.))

"Well then," he paused. "You'll need to check in with Operations to get your quarters assigned... but the new Ops Chief hasn't made it on board yet. I expect that Chief Palmer is who you'll need to see in the meantime. I'm sure that you'll want to get sickbay set up according to your own liking... and you will likely need to spend some time with our Chief Science Officer, Lieutenant Tesenblen. He is starting a new project that I think you should be aware of. If you need anything from me personally, please do not hesitate to ask."

((OOC: any response))

The Captain frowned. "We are set to leave the starbase tomorrow morning on our new mission, so I don't know how long it will be before we have a chance to meet more socially. If possible, I'll try to schedule a meal tomorrow for the various department heads to get to know one another. In the meantime, though, well aboard again, Doctor. I look forward to serving with you."

Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine, Captain's Quarters - 1845

Captain Drake sat at the small desk in his quarters, glaring at his PADD, continuing to ignore the half-eaten sandwich that stared reproachfully from the forgotten corner of his desk. If he truly was expected to welcome on three new department heads, it was best that he got to know as much about them as he could; to that end, Silas found himself poring over personnel records. He tried to brush his anger aside and focus on what he could control, doing his best to observe all he could about the new officers - as well as to see what might information might lie between the lines in their files.

The door chimed, causing Drake to frown in annoyance, though he placed the PADD down and bade the visitor to enter.

Silas was more than a bit surprised to see his Chief Science Officer standing there; surely the man was off shift by now. "Good evening, Captain. I apologize if I've disturbed your evening in any way. There's something I wished to discuss with you." Horatio bore a hopeful expression.

In spite of his annoyance, Silas forced himself to smile politely. "Not at all, Lieutenant. Though I am a bit surprised that you aren't enjoying a little leave at the moment."

"Well, as you know," Tesenblen responded, "I take incredible pride in my botanical work. I tediously and meticulously tend to every plant in my care. Would you agree with that?"

What an odd duck, Silas mused. Still, he nodded. "Lieutenant, you have always impressed me as being very thorough in your work, and I can certainly recognize and appreciate your passion for botany. Still, I'm not quite sure that I understand what that has to do with this visit."

An after hours visit to talk to me about how well you water your plants? Silas wondered.

"Thank you," the CSO answered. "It so happens that I've actually managed to cross two species that I'm hopeful the product of which will allow potential testing for elimination of diseases we still struggle with, including more effective treatments for things like cancer..." his voice trailed off. "I digress, allow me to get to the point.

I'm here because I just acquired a new specimen of..." Horatio let his voice trail off in a hesitant and uncertain manner. "Well, it's a new plant that I've never had an opportunity to work with before or study. It's called aconitum lycoctonum, colloquially known as Northern European Wolfsbane."

"Wolfsbane..." Drake answered uncertainly. "I'm no botanist, Lieutenant, but if I recall science from years ago, it seems that this is a rather dangerous species."

"Well, Captain," Tesenblen responded, "I've always been honest and plain with you and you've always done right by me, so I'll be straight with you here. This plant is far more dangerous than anything you've ever seen. The smell of this plant can knock a grown man unconscious if he's exposed to it enough, and with further exposure, it's potentially lethal. With your permission and extreme", heavy emphasis here, "care given, I'd like to grow a specimen and use it in my research. I believe there are potential applications here that can advance modern medicine in ways I can only imagine."

Drake leaned back in his chair and regarded his Chief Science Officer. "So then," he began, "let me get this straight. You're asking me to allow you to cultivate a dangerous, deadly - and, as far as I know, illegal - species in the name of scientific research?"

((OOC: assuming a positive reply))

The Captain let out a sigh, then went silent for a long, awkward moment as he let his gaze unfocus for a time. Finally, he focused again on Tesenblen.

"Innovation often requires thinking outside of the box, pushing boundaries past where we are comfortable. I understand this," he spoke. "However, Mister Tesenblen, you absolutely will not cultivate this Wolfsbane..." with this, he fixed a cold stare on the CSO's eyes, "until you put together a satisfactory plan for handling it safely."

The Captain paused for a moment before he continued. "I want a full plan on education of your staff as to how to safely interact with this plant. I want a workable solution to isolate the cultivation area from the rest of the ship, with security protocols in place to prevent any unknowing person from wandering into an accidental encounter with it. I want safeguards in place to treat this thing like a wild animal - no crew member is to ever be alone, unsupervised, with the plant; if something goes wrong, someone will know about it and be able to help the afflicted individual. I want our new doctor - yes, we are getting a new Chief Medical Officer any time now - fully informed as to what you are doing, and to have medical prepared in the event that emergency treatment is needed for exposure to this species. If you cannot comply with these conditions to my satisfaction, you will bring any samples of this plant back to my quarters, where I will personally oversee their recycling in the replicator. Are we clear?"

((OOC: assuming a positive response))

Drake nodded. "Very well, then. Horatio, I will fully support your research - as long as you can convince me that it can be safely carried out. I will expect your report by sixteen hundred hours tomorrow. Dismissed."

Sorry, I misunderstood.

You're in Northern Ertain because your last adventure - clearing a trade route of bandits - placed you not far from here.

Crandel is the nearest population center, and offers possible shelter from the weather, plus a warm meal and cold ale.

Not a terribly uncommon thing - a group of one faith or another wandering across the land to visit some holy place or another.

None of you are Lysoran, so... *knowledge check* nobody has heard of it. It may be a legitimate holy site, it may be some charlatan posing as a priest claiming that it's holy.

If it *is* a holy pilgrimage, they very well may not accept nonbelievers on the journey.

Hammerfoot approaches the pilgrims, palms open, asking about their health and offering aid. Most of the rest of the party takes up defensive positions, or prepares for a fight, though Vengador the Dawnbringer seems to take it farther than most. His cries of rebuke ring out through the fog, causing moans of fear from the rattily-clothed lot of men on the road. They huddle close, looking fearfully around, but seem to relax a bit when no immediate attack presents itself.

For it is indeed men that they are - dirty from the road, damp from the oppressive drizzle, and half starved by the look of them - but men, nonetheless. They shuffle and stagger along, most leaning on branches and staves.

Their leader, a slightly less gaunt human with a stringy, dirty beard, shakes his head at the offer from the cleric of Kharox. Huge dark rings are under his eyes, as if he has slept little for days. "Nay, short one, we are well enough. We cannot afford to tarry, not with what stalks these roads at night. We seek the blessed shrine of Lysora in the Taverton wood - we dare not stop, lest we never make it."

He fixes a baleful gaze in your direction. "You would do well if you were not on this road come dark. They are coming."

His companions groan in agreement, and the pilgrims shuffle past the khord, bound south and east.

Hey Dox -

Great post, man. I absolutely love how, rather than wait for the plot to include you, you are making up a subplot that doesn't hurt anyone else's gaming, but give you tons to do. Seriously... WAY TO GO. This is EXACTLY how Science - which can be one of the toughest departments to play - should be done!

I'm about to head to bed, and I have a full day of little league tomorrow (parade in the morning, followed by coaching two games), so it will be tomorrow evening before I can post - but I *will* post a reply.

No worries at all.

The earliest I will post would be tomorrow evening; I have a little league parade in the morning, and then, two little league baseball games to coach.

Neither Hammer nor AmaraD have yet to post; as I understand it, Amara is/was wrapped up in a work issue, and again, I want to give everyone a fair chance to post.
