Subject: The Sherlock Principle

USS Discovery, NCC-71847

Please note: this is a closed game; only approved members may post here. If you wish to join, please see the related recruitment thread for the game.

In an effort to promote the flow of the game, I am moving time ahead several months. My first couple of posts will cover the summary of the last mission and the crew turnover. From there, we will get into the new mission.

Stardate: 2366.10.18
USS Discovery, captain's quarters - 2225

Noah yawned as he closed the cover of the book and placed it on the nearby table. Many of his colleagues considered him a bit quiant for his preference of printed books to the various electronic methods of data delivery, but he found it to be as his mother had told him as a boy - the imagination provided a much more vivid setting for the writer's words, and there was just something that felt right with the tactile feedback of a book in his hands, something that no holovid or PADD could hope to provide.

Tonight's reading had brought him to the close of one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classics, and for some reason, one of the great Inspector Holmes' quotes lingered in Noah's consciousness. "...when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth..."

Captain Blair found his thoughts tangenting off of the Holmes quote, down a related path, back to his first days board the Discovery. To the Gavin III mission, and the minor political outcry that had arisen from the Discovery's findings there. Indeed, the AWAY team - and, for that matter, much of the Discovery complement as a whole - had eliminated the impossible, until they had finally uncovered the truth.

The last Noah had heard, the colony's governor was awaiting her trial for violation of the Prime Directive, as well as for a host of lesser charges (including the attempted murder of her own husband). Several of her key advisors had turned against her when the truth was finally revealed, which, combined with the findings of Gavison and MacTavish, had sealed her legal fate. Of course, the logistical nightmare that had followed - the evacuation of all personnel and removal of as much Federation property as possible from the planet - had been much, much worse.

Noah poured himself a small dose of cognac from the bottle that Tuvar had given him so many months ago. As he savored the liquid, he couldn't help but smile slightly. At least the natives had cooperated when they realized that the Federation personnel were leaving - though the captain would have given almost anything to have been there the first time one of the racoolemurs had "spoken" to Mac!

How he wished he had been there himself for the discovery of a new sentient species! It was a small comfort that Talda had been on that AWAY team, and the young man held a similar passion for xenobiology. His reports had been enthusiastic and thorough, so Blair could not, in good conscience, feel too slighted. To this day, none of the Federation scientists had figured out how exactly the creatures manipulated that odd energy field on Gavin III in order to sabotage the colonists' technology. If not for ensign N'doog's "outside the box" pespective, they might never have figured out what was changing the molecular makeup of the equipment, and that had, in turn, helped to unlock the "whys" of the mystery.

In retrospect, it wasn't overly complicated. The Federation survey team had overlooked the fact that the racoolemurs were, in fact, quite intelligent - and at least somewhat telepathic, to boot, it would seem. In addition, they possessed an innate ability to manipulate that odd additional energy field in order to bring about physical changes to their enviroment.

At first, they had avoided the colonists, hoping that they would go away. When it became clear that they would not, and that the intruders intended on expanding across the planet, the natives took nonviolent - but very effective - measures to convince the colonists to leave.

The governor had been suspicious, and her husband had managed to obtain proof of the racoolemurs' intelligence. She silenced him and covered up the evidence, but the Discovery personnel had learned the truth, anyway.

Terminating the colony and placing the governor under arrest had been the right thing to do, but it hadn't been pleasant; at the time, it was even a bit intimidating to the new captain. Now, though, it was all a memory.

Noah shook his head ruefully and drained the glass. Tomorrow would be a new day... who knew what it might hold?

Alacrity has undergone a slight change of heart. Avanti will still be leaving us, but Big Al believes that he could continue to participate in a less demanding role... namely, that of everyone's favorite Catullan enginer, Btxwytre "Bob" N'doog!

Righteous, dude!

Pish tosh. Just point me at the bad guys. Or, just as good, have some conniving NPC with a pitiful excuse for a cover story "my puppy is lost, will you help me find him?" fire Arien's imagination to right some wrong (doesn't have to actually exist, just have to fool him into thinking it does), and we'll go quest.

Yay rightousness and goodness! Yay chivlary!

Thanks to Captain Backup (aka Eol Fefalas, give the boy an applaud!), we have most of our personnel files intact, and I am uploading them now.

To view what's going up, please see http://rdcconline.com/trek/roster.php?simid=1

The menu is still wonky, but you can at least view the roster...

Note that I unfortunately do not have sheets for Raditz or Keely, though I will look through my old notes to see what I can find. Players, if you have something, let me know!

You have seized on it perfectly, I think - a counselor would indeed not need any real working knowledge of trek tech - on the contrary, it could be a nice character device. We would love to have you!

Currently, all department head positions have been filled. However, you are always welcome to apply as a regular member - officer or enlisted - in any department.

After a lot of consideration and soul searching, I have decided to relaunch Star Trek: Discovery. I am well aware that we will have to recast some roles - for instance, we are losing the ultra-talented Alacrity, but with my full blessing - he will be brining back a fantastic game of his own, and does not wish to take away from both by not devoting enough time to either.

FYI, the Discovery is a Galaxy Class vessel, set in 2366 (approx season 3 of TNG). This is pre-dominion war, pre-borg.

To cover the player turnover and the gap since we last played, I will advance game time significantly - probaby to the tune of six to nine months. I will do a post to cover the old mission, however, to that you can have closure as to what happened.

Returning payers, please post your interest here!

So! The long and the short of it is that I'm looking for dedicated players. Know that Trek is free form, but not ruleless - I (and the command staff) tend to set the stage with major plot points; you are free to play your character however you wish (within reason). Need to create some NPC crewmembers to help your department? Great! Be our guest!

You must be able to post no less than weekly... Ideally, you'll post more often that that. Knwledge of trek is a good idea, though you need not be a sick fanboy to play.

Please understand that this is a wrting intensive game. Posts like "Engineer Steve acknowledges his orders and goes about maintenance duties." will not cut it. SHORT posts tend to be three paragraphs; typical posts can be much longer, depending on what is going on. Ideally, you'll be able to carry some of the story yourself; if no one is posting anything for your character to do, take some initiative and set your own scene!

Be prepared to create a rather extensive character background, including service history and such (see http://rdcconline.com/trek/roster.php?simid=1
for examples). I'll of course be glad to help you if you need it, but if its too much trouble to create a living character history, you probably would not enjoy the game itself.

So, what are you waiting for? Apply today!

The TDF sergeant seems annoyed at the questioning he is receiving from this civillian. "We are handling the other ship as well, civillian. Now, one more time," his voice loses most of its friendliness, "please return to the passenger berths immediatey."

*******************

Over the new few minutes, all occupants of the Kul Kura were herded into the main passenger berth, with the crew being placed on benches on one side of the room. Noteably, the crew have been placed in wrist restraints, and two troopers stand near them. The captain is noticeably absent.

A sandy-haired human in a TDF uniform strides into the compartment. "I am Lieuteanant Tord," he states by way of introduction. "This vessel has been seized on charges of spice trafficing. As we have no reason to suspect the passengers of any involvement, you will be free to go once we rech the planet. The crew will be detained, and the vessel impounded."

His voice is firm and leaves no room for argument. "Regretfully, we must ask that all of you remain in this compartment until we arrive. We nearly have the engines repaired, so we will be back underway shortly."

He and most of the soldiers leave, but four remain in the compartment - the red-haired human from engineering, two oher humans, and a bothan. They take up positions around the area and settle in to wait.

My first DM scarred me for life with this guy - some of you have heard the tale.

His name was Greedyguts (cheesy, I know). Greedyguts was some sort of sadistic demigod who for an unknown reason took an interest in our party. Mainly, I think its because my teenaged DM felt like giving us a hard time... and liked playing his stupid goth music as an intro for the thing.

Greedyguts, as I recall, manifested in the form of a huge black panther with tentacles. He possessed incredible power, and could (and often did) freeze us to the ground at will, where he would taunt us, torture us, and generally make our lives miserable for no apparent reason.

Not surprisingly, we tired of Greedyguts and the "you can't do that!" messages. Not long thereafter, I was voted the new DM of the group (not by my choosing), and well... the rest is history.

It scarred me, man... and having been through it, I'm probably not as open to complains of DM cruelty as I might otherwise would have been...

Lana stiffened even as Ziv looked to accept the restraints, and a wild look momentrily passed over her features. The young techie wondered if she would try something foolish, but apparently the sight of four heavily armed soliders was enough to make her thnk sensibly. With a sigh, she too surrendered.

Once the two engineers were under control, the red-haired soldier keyed his commlink. "Shadoran here, reporting engine room secured." He paused for a moment, receiving a reply, then nodded. "Understood. We're on our way."

He looked at his squad. "Turvin, Julls, commnder says for you two to say here and get this tub moving. We'll take these two amindships with the rest of 'em." After getting an affirmative, he and the other soldier led their captives amidships to the passenger berths.

Let's go beyod the nameless barkeep that you know not to mess with, the umpteenth inept town guardsman that you likewsie know that your prty could defeat using a collection of plush animals, or the one-track villain that your six year old could outwit.

Has your DM/GM ever included a really memorable NPC in one of your adventures? It can be a recurring character, or simply a one-shot deal that was so funny/bizzare/remarkable that you still talk about them to this day.

Tell us about them, and what made them memorable - over-the-top accents, vivid descriptions, crazy actions, or something else entirely?

The sergeant is not too pleased to explain himself to a civillian, but he does anyway. "On charges of illegal spice distribution," he states. "Now I repeat, return to the passenger berth."

As far as Caise can tell, the sarge is upfront about his statement - no apparent hidden motives.

The standard comlink has an effective range out to orbit, depending on the current LOS between ship and planet surface. Planets with advanced communiction nets can icrease this to cover the "dark side", as well.

Most deep space vessels (and certainly mny major planetside installations) have communications equipment capable of communicating truly vast distances either in audio or holo modes.

As for telepathy, I don't see this being a viable option for now. I'll have to look into it further to see if two of Trask's skill could even do it, but I am sure that the padawan cannot.

Passengers aboard the Kul Kura have been ordered to move to the main passenger berth, where they will be watched by armed guards. Crew members have been placed under arrest; they will also be moved to the passenger berth, but in restraints.

I have assumed nothing. If you wish to start shooting (you'll never take me alive, coppers!), that's up to you.

Topic: Star Wars: The Tides of Fate
Subject: taking over...

Captain Dulo paled at the order and started to sputter a protest, then hung his head. His lack of denial was confession enough for the bridge crew (many of which were likely implicated), and the lack of effetive weaponry on the Kul Kura ensured that there would be no real struggle.

The bulky DR-400 pulled alongside the Kul Kura at matched both velocity and trajectory before sending across a boarding tube. Captain Dulo waved his hand in a defeated motion, signaling that the airlock be opened, and moments later, a platoon of uniformed TDF forces poured into the Duro vessel.

*****************************

Caise had almost reached the bridge when the a squad of soldiers passed him. The leader, a human male in his early thirties, pointed at the jedi. "You there," he ordered, "return to the passenger berth. This vessel has been lawfully seized by the TDF, and will be taken to Tanaab for processing.

Even as they spoke, the hatch to the bridge opened, revealing the crew being placed under arrest. Tebbo, the pilot, was slumped on the ground, his hands covering his face; apparently, he had not complied quickly enough and had gotten the butt of a blaster rifle for his trouble, judging by the soldier standing over him.

**********************

The red-haired human soldier watched impassively as the engineering crew were notified that they, too, were under arrest for suspicion of conspiracy to distribute spice in league with Captain Dulo. Honestly, he couldn't care less about them; he would have much preferred to be on the bridge itself - the bounty on Dulo's head was more than enough to get him back into the good life. Unfortunately, his connection had only been good enough to get him placed as a trooper on Commander Albari's ship - not good enough to allow him to pick his area of deployment.

So, he would have to bide his time. And hope that the locals would be satisfied enough with the spice to look the other way...
