Stardate: 2366.10.22
USS Discovery, captain's ready room - 0940

For what felt like the umpteenth time this morning, the door chime sounded. Noah bit back a flash of irritation and invited the person to enter. For a moment, he considered having Amanda keep everyone else away for the rest of the morning, but knew that such a thing would hardly be productive.

The hatch opened, revealing the tall, attractive, dark-haired woman they had picked up from the Valmont. "Good morning, Commander Walgrave," Noah spoke by way of introduction. "I trust that you've had a chance to at least glance over your new situation?"

OOC: any reply

Blair nodded. "It's my understanding that you are to be assigned permanent quarters at some point today in senior officer country; I believe that mister Raines had to juggle some things in an effort to get your new home ready."

OOC: reply, or not

"Commnder," the captain continued, "you will find that I offer - and expect - a great deal of autonomy from my senior staff and department heads. You are the engineer here, and from the looks of your service record, a competant officer, as well. It's a shame that you never got to meet Commander Avanti - I think that the two of you could have had some interesting discussions on the subject of warp technology."

Noah grinned. "But I digress. The point is that you are the most qualified person on this ship to run engineering. Therefore, I expect you to do it, but I will stay out of your way and allow it to happen. If you need the assistance of myself or any of the rest of the staff, do not hesitate to ask. Now, do you have any questions?"

OOC: if so, I'll answer.

The captain nodded. "There will be a senior staff meeting at 1030 in the observation lounge Don't worry - I try to keep meeting short and to the point. Regadless, though, you are naturally expected to attend."

OOC: any further additions or edits...

"Very well. I will see you at the staff meeting, then. Oh, and once again, welcome to the Discovery, commander."

When Dwan asked if there were any questions, it took all of Arien's willpower to not simply blurt out, "One question. When do we leave?" Still, he could almost feel his sister, Alloryn, lingering over his shoulder, chiding him to be patient. There were subtleties to be concerned with beyond the best route to use to breach this fort. Once Dapple spoke, her words made perfect sense... why didn't Dwan just send soldiers?

Imperiously, Talas blurted out his demand to know the leadership of the group. The knight fixed his gaze on the gladiator, but was momentarly caught up in memory of another gladiator - one with hazel eyes he had found himself lost in on more than one occasion. With her levelheadedness, Shona had usurped what Arien had felt was his calling at the time. Experience since with many of these comrades had taught Arien that, unlike a military unit, it wasn't always necessary to have a strict chain of command.

"Friend Talas," the knight spoke smoothly, "in many matters, I will serve to coordinate our actions. However, we all bring our own strengths and gifts to this group." Ah, how he missed Aloryn's magic at his back! "I do not presume any of you my lessers, or my troops to lead. In short, we are a team."

So, when do we leave?

No, no, no! It's the question and answer game, implying ONE of EACH.

You ask a question to go with the answer of the person before you. You then get to give your own answer.

Restarting the game, my answer is:
(the next person asks a question, then gives an answer)

Toadstools, sir. Nothing but toadstools.

Once, I was invited to fill in for a missing player in a regular group. Sometimes that works out, often it does not. This time in particular was great.

The party came upon a deserted town - food still on the tables, dirty dishes in the sink, etc but no people. After a long search for clues, we move to the temple. For some reason, we decided to split up. One group went upstairs, one went into the basement.

Anyway, the group upstairs finds this kid. He runs, despite our asurances that we are friendly. We give chase. We turn the corner to see a hatch in a wall flapping. Being bold (and not so bright) we dive through the hatch, fall down a shaft, and crash into our comrades in the bsement - who were ready to skewer us, thinking we were some sort of monster fromt he racket we made.

As we are picking ourselves up, we hear the sound of laughter filtering down the shaft - the kid had slapped the hatch on his way to a hiding place... the effect was a fun little setup!

XO = eXecutive Officer.

We use lots of abbreviations in our pretend quasi-military game.

TAC - tactical
SEC - security
2O - second Officer
3O - tird officer

And many more...

Stardate: 2366.10.22
USS Discovery, captain's ready room - 0850

The meeting with MacTavish had gone well - better than Noah had really dared to hope. Of course, odds were very good that by helping the 20, he had created a political enemy; threatening Drummond with a reprimand had been nothing more than blackmail and favoritism, and anyone would be able to see that. Admiral Drummond himself was not a particularly influential flag officer, but he was a flag officer, nonetheless; Noah had the feeling that this incident would not be soon forgotten or forgiven.

Ah, well - there would be time to pay for this sin later. For now, the captain had an intel report to tend to. Of course, the chime picked that instand to interrupt his studying.

"Come in," he answered. Glancing up, he saw a strawberry-blonde junior grade lieutenant in science blues. Too young for you, boy, he mused.

"What can I do for you, lieutenant...Keely, isn't it?" Blair felt fairly certain that he had the name right - with his habit of dropping by the labs whenever possible, he had a passing familiarity with many of the crew. He was fairly certain that the woman did something with plants.

OOC: respond here, Keely!

The captain nodded. "I was putting together my itenary for the morning's staff meeting; I think tht this will need to be addressed. Thank you, lieutenant."

Let this be a lesson as to why you should follow the posting guidelines here in the Q&A thread - don't advance the plot beyond the current time! Sure, assume your shift, add on what you do afterwards, whatever - espeically when you know that there WILL be an afterwards.

But whe you go ahead a day, you do so at your own peril, and if we were supposed to have a "scheduled emergency" in the morning, there would be a problem.

The idea for your post was a great one - just next time, sit on it until the right time comes. You missed hanging out with Bob and Caleb, and missed the chance to take Caleb's money on poker!

USS Discovery, captain's ready room - 0710

As Noah sat at his desk, reviewing a preliminary report from the science labs, the chime sounded. So it starts early today, he grumbled inwardly.

"Come in," he spoke, and the hatch slid open to admit Commander Gavison. "Good morning, commnder," he spoke by way of greting. "You're here early. Did Kaila keep you from sleeping?"

The serious look on Gavison's face ended that line of conversation. "No sir, she slept fine," Gavison replied, placing a PADD on the captain's desk. "I thought that you should see this."

As Noah read the contents, his expression darkened. Disciplinary matters were usually handled internally, or the most senior department head would oversee matters involving more than one department. However, the ship's executive officer had sole discresion on unusual cases. For a moment, Noah wondered if Gavison were perhaps politicing, but the man's eyes said otherwise.

"Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention. I will deal with it."

"Aye, sir." Gavison replied. With nothing else to say, he turned and left the room.

*******************

Captain's ready room - 0840

Blair sat down at his desk and tapped his commbadge. "Blair to MacTavish."

=/= MacTavish here. What can I do fer ye, captain? =/= came the reply.

"Lieutenant, report to my ready room," Noah ordered.

=/= Aye, sair. I'm on my way. =/=

Blair placed two fingertips on the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes for a moment. He was not looking forwad to this meeting.

Presently, the door chimed, and Blair admitted MacTavish and instructed him to take a seat. There was no need for preliminaries.

"Jack, I think that you know why I've called you here." The captain's voice was dead, holding none of its usual life and humor. "It seems that there was an altercation outside of ten forward last night. Ensign Drummond has filed a complaint, stating that you attacked him. Several witnesses observed the incident, and agree with his claim. Obviously, this reflects very poorly on you."

Blair left it unsaid that the incident reflected very poorly on him, as well. The captain had made some exceptions when appointing MacTavish as second officer, and this sort of thing brought his judgement into question.

Noah shook his head. "I suppose that if you are going to beat up an ensign, you might as well pick a good target." He casually indicated the PADD on the desk. "Ensign Anthony Drummond. Nephew of Admiral Nathaniel Drummond." The captain sighed.

"Jack, you are an excellent officer. You run an outstanding department. When it really counts, you are always there to meet the challenge, always making the right decisions. And yet, your record is spotted by incidents like this."

Noah shook his head. "Jack, you should be wearing three pips right now, but as is, there are only two on your collar, and it will be some time before you have the seniority to be considered for another. You will make a fine captain someday, but at the rate you are going, your career will never advance beyond looey. You are your own worst enemy!"

After a long pause, the captain fixed gazes with the TAC chief. "This morning, I convinced Ensign Drummond to drop his complaint. I pointed out to him that were he to pursue it, he would be earning his own reprimand for insubordination and conduct unbecoming once everyone's testimony was made official."

"By the way," Blair added, "Chantelle is a big girl - I'm sure that she can handle a little name calling without your help. Oh, don't look at me that way, Jack," he spoke, a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth, "you two aren't nearly as subtle as you might like to think. Escorting the lieutenant to her quarters, indeed!" He snorted. "It seems that you seem to be escorting a certain lieutenant to quite a few places of late. Even so, I don't see her as the kind of girl who should have to come and visit you in the brig."

"Jack," he continued, hoping that his attempt at being droll had softened things a bit, "the way I see it, you have a choice to make. You can choose to continue to periodically become a violent ass, and to make sure that your career stagnates and your health suffers. Or, you can choose to do something about it, and become the kind of officer - the kind of man - that you are capable of being."

Noah leaned back in his chair. "I'm not going to order you to do anything. A person can only change if they want to change. If I force you to seek help, it will only waste everyone's time, and cause every one of your future COs to spend even more time reading the added entries in your jacket for no good reason." He shook his head. "No, but I'm going to ask you, as a friend, to go and see Counselor Arevaci. He may surprise you, Jack - this man is not the typical, run of the mill head-shrinker."

OOC: insert responses anywhere as they are needed.

Blair stood and extended his hand to MacTavish. "All right, Jack. Like I said, the choice is yours. Think on it, and make it."

OOC: assuming nothing major to be added....

Noah nodded. "Dismissed, lieutenant."

USS Discovery, Lt. Ames' Quarters - 0025

"Okay boys, that's it," Caleb stated with finality as he stood from the table. Despite being a reasonably competant player, he had quite simply lost his shirt tonight. Sometimes you win, sometimes you skip the niceties for the next pay period.

He had really hit it off with Lieutenant N'doog - the two of them really seemed to understand one another. Which was made even more interesting, Caleb mused, considering the fact that virtually no one ever seemed to understand most of what came out of Bob's mouth.

The thing was, the catullan was completely non judgemental, and easily one of the most open-minded people that Caleb had met in starfleet. The man did his thing and was happy with it; if you did your thing and were happy with it, then he was happy with it, too.

Caleb winced and rubbed his head. The combination of the booze and the attempt to follow such a Bob-esque thought process was making his head hurt.

"Lab shift again tomorrow," he announced, "so I have to get up early. Bob's been grousing about sleeping for the past hour, and it's past time that I agree with him. Enjoy my money!" he added with a chuckle.

As they stepped outside, Talda and N'doog realized that their quaretrs lay in opposite directions. "Bob, you are hilarious, man..." Caleb started, "but seriously... well, I don't want to sound like a moron, but you are... I dunno. Grounded? Don't sweat the small stuff that seems to bother most of the rest?"

Showing some rare awkwardness, Caleb chuckled. "Anyway, I hope we can hang out again. I've got decent balance - maybe we'll do some of this 'skateboarding' on the holodeck sometime?"

OOC: any reply...

Caleb nodded. "Okay, then, cool. Talk to ya later!" With that, he turned and headed toward his few hours of sleep.

The stick in he mud answer: our terms of service requires that posted mterial not be of a graphic sexual nature. PG, please.

The reasonable answer: we have lots of teens, even young ones, who play here - to say nothing of some of our kids who read along. I have, for the entire history of the Inn, treid to make the site family-friendly. I want people to be comfortable with their kids gaming here. So again, PG.

No real swearing, no graphic depictions of sex. If you wouldn't see it in a network broadcast of a Trek episode, you shouldn't see it here.

He cuts a dashing figure in his shining platemail, with his fine cloak of gold-trimmed green flowing behind him. His glittering emerald eyes dance with an inner light, contrasted sharply by his well-kept shock of raven-black hair. After taking a polite sip of wine from his goblet, the young man smiles warmly and adresses the group.

"As several of you already know, I am Sir Arien Aston Thedell the third." Those that have traveled with the young man in the past might pick up on the hole in his introduction; this is possibly the first time in his life that Arien is without his twin sister, Alloryn. Even so, the knight's smile seems quite genuine, and though he is not a particularly tall man, Arien is full of the sort of confidence and energy that makes a person appear to be larger than they really are.

"What would you know of me? I hail from Nyrond, where our family's holdings are located. My grandfather was a mighty and honorable warrior, and I am proud to carry his name."

His hand drifts to the pommel of his sword. "I have found Dwan Granitecrusher to be good and truthful employer, and so, I am happy to be of service to him and the Iron League."

I have a very non-Rodenberry take on cash in Star Trek. The idea of a no money utopia is great, but I just don't see it working. Time and time again, we have seen that socialism leads to stagnation and decay.

But let's be more practical than that. Supposedly, there are various insterstellar trading bodies, and intercivilization trading is common. Are we to really believe that in the 2400s, everyone has gone back to barter? Please.

If you want to be utopian, fine. I can believe that hunger has been eradicated... maybe. But I just can't suspend my disbelief enough in order to swallow a "no money" society.

Electronic cash, sure. Nonexistent, nope.
