Excellent posts from all. I think the reactions and scenes drawn out in the posts were great interactions and all true to the characters. So well done everybody.

Will post pilot audition beginning tomorrow so Celeste and Loki can join. I was gonna do it as a narrative but I have decided to do it as a mini adventure instead. Better to have everyone get to know each other.

If Ma knows sign it wouldn't help much as no one else does. There is a lot of mystery in her past and the captain wisely chooses not to explore that.

Sorry I have been away for awhile. Vacation.

Umm. No. Wolf's stuff is not all legal, nor is Ashers.

Here is the basic run down of what is illegal in the "verse. Any weapons that fall into the following:

Assault rifles
Submachine guns
Grenade Launchers
Laser pistols
Grenades (all except smoke)
Optical bombs
Weapon modifications including silencers, concealability and "assassination" ready (This would include laser, night vision and long range scopes
Any ammo that is explosive, designed to kill quickly, armour piercing, poisoned, iradiated, etc etc etc

Look at it this way. You get boarded as freighters often do, and they may not notice a single assault rifle and a few grenades. But if you are carrying case of grenades, assault rifles, machine pistols, and modified weapons designed to be highly accurate and concealable - what do you think they will think? A hard nose would be arresting everyone, selling the ship for your legal fees and enjoying the glory your arrest brings him as you are shipped to Perdition. A greedy man might just look for bribes to not notice them - and who pays that bribe? I am not saying you can't have a few illegal items, you gotta survive to make a living.

Listen - the weapon thing is getting out of hand. Asher is a gunfighter and needs a few weapons - I get it. But keep it "real". You are not fighting a war, nor are you occuping a town. For all the gun-power you had in the last campaign, it was the pistols and regular shotguns that served you the best.

Oh - and I do have a module where you start out as new inmates of the Perdition Penal Colony. Just saying ...

Sample ships in the book were done with a earlier version of the rules and were not undated before printing. I found a Serenity RPG ERRATA. Okay, now I see why it doesn't make sense.

So Rocinante is correct as listed.

I think it may be the rules that have the problem or I am missing something cause when I do up the ship it is very high complexity and costs over 100K, which does not match up to the firefly or even serenity in the book.

Of course I could be too tired for math.

General skills go to d6. Then you specialize.

Here is a list of General skills and possible Specializations. If you have a specialty you want but don't see here, let me know.

Skills

General - Even if you have never done anything in these skills, you have a chance based on attribute alone in these skills. So a novice can shoot a gun, or come up with obscure knowledge.

With specialization, if there is a category you can think of, but don’t see – bring it up. This is hardly the exhaustive list. Some cross over several skill sets, so don’t specialize twice.

Animal Handling – You like animals, or you know how to talk to them.
• Specializations: Training, riding, zoology, veterinary, specific animal
Artistry – you have some artistic talents
• Specializations: Appraisal, cooking, forgery, game design, painting, photography, poetry, sculpting, writing.
Athletics – You are good at moving and using athletic skills
• Specializations: Climbing, contortion, dodge, juggling, jumping, running, swimming, any sport
Covert – The subtle arts of the sneaky sneak.
• Specialization: Camouflage, disable devices, forgery, infiltration, disguise, hide in shadows, streetwise, open locks
Craft – You can create things out of other things.
• Specialization: Architecture, blacksmithing, gun repair, leatherworking, cooking, pottery, origami, metalworking
Discipline – You have had some sort of training, usually military.
• Specialization: Concentration, interrogation, intimidation, leadership, mental resistance, morale
Guns – Any dip can squeeze a trigger – this is about aiming and knowing how to hold the gun
• Specialization: Assault rifles, energy throwers, grenade launchers, machine guns, pistols, rifles, shotguns
Heavy Weapons – The big guns that are used to take a ship out of the sky.
• Specialization: Artillery, catapults, demolitions, forward observer, mounted guns, rocket launchers, cannons
Influence – Sometimes words are better than guns and glances.
• Specialization: Administration, barter, bureaucracy, conversation, counseling, marketing, seduction, streetwise
Knowledge – Knowing stuff and more stuff.
• Specialization: Culture, selling goods, appraisal, philosophy, earth that was, sports, religion, local customs
Melee Combat Weapons – Weapons held in the hand that don’t shot nuthin’
• Specialization: Clubs, numchaku, swords, knives, dagger
Perception – Picking up on the subtle clues in your surrounding
• Specialization: Deduction, empathy, gambling, hearing, intuition, reading lips, search, sight, smell, taste, tracking
Performance - You got a song in the heart or a desire to act out.
• Specialization: Acting, dancing, costuming, keyboard, guitar, wind instruments, singing
Planetary Vehicles – You have the ability to drive, steer and operate land based vehicles
• Specialization: cars, canoes, sailboats, hovercraft, ground vehicle repair, military combat vehicles, submarines, yachts
Ranged Weapons – Any weapon thrown or shot that isn’t a gun
• Specializations: Blowguns, Bows, crossbows, darts, grenades, javelins, knives, slings
Survival –Buck naked on a rock – things ain’t so bad.
• Specialization – water, land, desert, nature, space survival, specific environment, making fire, hunting
Unarmed Combat – You fight with fist and feet
• Specialization: Boxing, brawling, judo, karate, kung fu, wrestling, street fighting

Skilled Only – you must have points here to try these at home.

Subject: share the share

At the start of the game, the players who had left over cash for equipment chipped in to buy additional armour for the Roc, the operating theatre and the Hovermule. That was considered to buyng a share.

Now Bromern has divided the money up and considered Wolf as owning a share. Knowing Wyatt he feels that you almost gave your life for the crew and ship, so Wolf deserve a full share.

When the Captain hires on the new Pilot and tech guy, then he can decide how they will be paid or use the one share per person method which is simple and straight forward.

I will be on vacation next week so if you are looking to spend that 300 credits on something nice, then let me know. I will be posting off and on during the week to get the next game set up. So let us say that all changes to characters, new equip and new characters be in by August 10th. After that, you are stuck with what you have.

Subject: The Datadisk

The datadisk is old and scratched but it runs well enough. The holographic image is projected of a older man, balding, gray moustache and a dirty burned uniform of an independence officer.

"This is Colonel Maddoc of the Lucius Newberry. This will likely be my final log as we are hit badly and going down fast towards Regina." The image wavers slightly as what appears to be a console behind him bursts into flames. Then the image comes back, " ... it's a trap, it's a trap, it's a trap, it's a trap" the feed gets stuck in a loop until Wolf slps the player with the side of his hand. "The money is tainted with a biological weapon. Them purple belly ...BZZT... the whole gorram thing so we thought we stole gold from them to finance our war effort but they wanted us to get it and pass it around. The disease would have killed everyone who touched it and them spread to our home worlds. BZZZZZZZT"

The image is lost for a few seconds and then Maddoc appears again. He is looking off screen, talking with someone who must be behind the holographic recorder.

"...want you to take Benny and take the shuttle. The three of us are gonna try to crash it down near that old plated out mine. You and Benny - you make sure no one finds this platinum - ya hear me! No one! Lock it up because burning or melting won't work. It will kill ...well. it will kill more than I want to imagine. Do you understand Lau? BZZZZZZZZZT"

The image stops. The power for the recorder must have cut off at that point. There are files on the disk that come up as directories. Files with a medical breakdown of the disease which is a cross between the common cold and ebola, engineered to mutate every two weeks so a cure cannot easily be created. If the paltimun was melted down, it would release in a vapour form and become more powerful. Washed off and it contaiminates the water supply. Unfortunately, without the platinum as proof, without hard evidence, this can never be proven. It could just be an old record and the ravings of a mad colonel just before he died.

Sorry if I don't always expalin my thought processes. I often assume everyone knows what I am thinking..

Advancement Points

Yes I am using a different system than the book just as I do for plot points. You have 6 points. You can put them to skills at 2 point for every step up. Remember that in Cortex, the general skill goes to d6 and then you special after that. So if you ar d6 guns and d8 rifles and wanted to go to d10, you put two points in and you got it. The most you can go up in a single advancement is one step unless I say otherwise. You may increase an attribute if you so desire but I need a reason for the attribute to go up. IE: I am working out more so I want to increase my strength.

If you are d6 and want to advance in a skill to d8 it costs two points but if it is a skill you have not used in the campaign, then I need a story.

Plot Points

You start all new campaigns with six points. You gain points by palying your complications to the benefit of the game. Also if you make me laugh, cry or scream "kiss her you dip!" at the screen, you will get more plot points.

Guns and Ammo

I believe that everyone is responsible for their own guns, ammo, and armor moneywise. The comment I made in a post about needing new ones was a throw away joke only. Now if you wish to have a "Ship Gun Locker" for anyone to use, then you'd have to have to put that on expenses.

Rocinante at the moment of leaving Regina

The ship has skipped it's last two regular maintenances, plus you are running on a stripped Aft Alternator and a rigged Grav Dampner. The Hover Mule could use a good overhaul, or at least have the brake line redone properly. Fuel wise, you are full to the brimm and that is good for 600 hours of travel. You don't need to replenish Med as the Doctor covered you and wouldn't take payment, although he did take a kiss from Willow. Food - alway an issue with Wolf and Ash on board. Dry Pasta - voice of experience here. I believe I posted your possible future expenses in a post before this one.

Making a better Rocinante

I will have to read up on that, thanks to Loki for the research on the topic but I may want to tweak the rules a bit on that as I often do. Give me a day or two to get back to you.

Did I answer all the questions?

Mr. Bowman has a full time paying gig now, with invites to ladies socials and all the pie he can handle so he politely declines the offer for a share. After a few days on your crew, he figures you'll need it in bandages and operating tools.

I thought that Willow bought a double share of the ship as she was the only one that didn't have to buy weapons and armour so she had a lot of cash left over. however I looked over the character sheet and she has one share written in, so I am mistaken. So it is 1's across the board.

I can not recall that there was a drawn up list for who got what shares and pay. Frankly, you haven't ever had a lot of money to consider doling it out before. When you got the 1000 from JW for the first load of ice there wasn't much to got around. I will skim through the postings and see if I can find anything.

Need to figure something out though as of your 7 man crew, 3 are new.

It looks like we started talking about this and never finsihed the process. As I can see it. Wyatt owns the ship clear (No debt). Willow bought 2 shares, Kora 1 and Ash 1. Trish was never included and I think she isn't really in this for the money or glamour. Now Kora is gone and you have no decided what to do with Wolf. Once we start anew, you will have to decide what to do about Tess and John as well.

If I look at the TV series, I think that salary was sorta a percentage of job. Remember that Jayne worked for basically his own room, food and 5% of job profits.

I have some questions actually, mostly for the Captain but I am sure you will all chime in:

Did anyone tell JW or Bailey about the tainted platinum in the mine in case they decide to explore the collapse?

You have 3000 credits, are you gonna spend it on the ship, pay the crew, hold it for lean times, a bit of all?

Did anyone warn Bowman about the triplets?

I was planning to do the pilot auditions as a narrative but if Loki and Celeste would like to write their own, I am all for it. You will basically be one of three finalists (John, Tess and a guy named Gator). Wyatt will show you to the the controls and ask you to take off, fly around for a spell and then land. His only instruction beyond that is "impress me".

Let me set the scene first and Gator will go first, then Tess and finally John.

Aging Tess ... Sure, no problem and I have no problem with Tea or a tea set as long as it don't fire explosive ammo or rockets.
