Some times they walk away

“Your friend’s a smart man” she said as she stared him dead in the eye. “I am Wei Shan Dohn Woo. (Big Danger) “And if you don’t want to find out just how much, stranger…move on now.”

Zee’s hand moved to the pistol on his side. Kora moved with reflexes trained deep and hard within her, and delivered a round house kick to the big man head, sending him spinning to the ground. It wasn’t all that difficult to knock the man down, considering his drunken state. There was a moment that passed, as Zee wrestled in his mind between the humiliation of being dump on the ground by a woman in a crowded place, and the severe possibility of it happening again.

Kora stood ready for retaliation as the man slowly picked himself up from the ground. The other man came and put a firm arm on his shoulder to help him make the decision to walk away. “Ain’t worth it Zee.”

Zee nodded reluctantly, “Right Hzi. You’re right.” He staggered back then turned around, as of he forgot something. He looks at Willow. “I’m sorry Lady. Had a bit too much today. Didn’t mean no harm.” Then he glower at Kora, his look at her said “this ain’t over” before turning with his brother to walk away.

Willow and Kora found themselves with all eyes upon them. Many people were muttering and staring, and the mute fear in their eyes was a sight not unfamiliar to Kora.

Beaumonde, Thrasher City, Idoru Bar, 2:00 PM ET

Date? Boy, I’m a sure thing

Asher followed Beth to the room behind the coat check. The girl definitely drew him in.She reminded the lad of home... and simplier times... better times. The area in the back was simple enough. Two bedrooms created by slapped up drywall and thermal foam for “soundproofing”. Another lady was in the back, older than Beth and not as voluptuous, her vibrant blonde hair could only be from a bottle. She was brushing her teeth in a pull out sink and she winked slyly at Beth as the two of you enter.

"Miss Beth," Asher said softly. "There ain't no denyin' I'd love t' bed ya right now." He kissed her again. "But I want t' do ya right. Not just like a stallion with some mare... but gentleman like." Another kiss. "So, I got t' ask ya.. are you free t' leave here fer a bit? 'Cause I'd love t' take ya away from here... if only fer a bit."

Beth looked at Asher with disbelief. “You playing with me Kid? I ain’t no innocent young farm girl you know. I sell my back side and give half to owner of this dive. You pay the coin, I’m yours, anyway you want. I’m no companion. You want to take me away for a spell, I need the funds to hand over, or else my backside will be switched. So you want to cover for your gentleman like ways, I need to see the coin.”

(assuming some inquiry as to how much)
The other lady spat out toothpaste and laughed, “Oh go on Beth. I’ll cover your ass while your gone, and it ain’t like we’s got a humpin line up.”

Beth looked over, “You sure?”

“Go girl. We ain’t likely to get many a gentleman in here again. Take him while you can.”

Beth smiled at Asher, “Let me get my coat.”

Beaumonde, Thrasher City Space Dock, 2:15 PM ET

When the Dealin’Done

“We got us a bit of time t’ pass ‘fore the meetin’, Sam. If you wanna check out the local color, I’m good with that,” Wyatt offered as they made their exit, “I’ll be headin’ back to Rocinante t’ go over some figures before Dodger tries t’ rip us off.”

“Nah,” Dash decided, convincing himself that Beaumonde was just a little too close to the Core for his liking, “I’m shiny, Cap. If I’m gonna rope that comet, I reckon I prob’ly oughta look ta Roc’s nav systems an’ sech. Ya go flyin’ inta th’ tail of a comet an’ navsats get pretty damn useless, get me?”

The two men made arrangement to meet Grif back at the Docks later than evening, after they had (hopefully) emptied their cargo bay. Leaving the young Asher to his distraction, the two friends amble their way back to Rocinante. They arrive at the docks just as Kora and Willow return with the groceries and provisions in tow. The Patrol of alliance soldiers are continuing their search of the ground level of the docks, but they have moved on to another section. Wyatt and Sam hear the dockworkers talking about an order coming down to open all ships to search that docked before 10:00 am today. That would exclude Rocinante, but not the Royale. Hopefully, Griffith has nothing to hide in there.

OOC: There you go. A moving forward post. My next post will be Willow, Wyatt and whoever wants to go along – meeting with Dodger and dealing with your cargo.

Asher- How long do you want your “date” to go? What is your budget for the event?

We have been hit with about 5 inches of snow and have another 5 to 10 coming. So, believe it or not my post has been delayed due to snow. However, once I do get to work, things will probably be dead, so I might have time today.

Yes, in Canada we go to work in snow storms. There could be three feet of snow and we will all slowly drive through whiteout conditions to get to work. However, in the summer when it is sunny and hot - we call in sick and take time off.

The game is going along well Scarab. It isn't moving at the pace you'd find interesting, but for those of us wrapped up in our own lives, it is moving just fine, thanks.

I can't see the pace increasing any time soon. As to new members, I'd have to say no. I gave you first crack at this Scarab and you turned me down on the basis that once a week wasn't fast enough.

You are welcome to follow along and if the crew outvotes, then I'd let another in.

Subject: Posting for Arien will be a Tall, bald and scary looking dude....

Arien looked down at the dagger offered to him by Char. It was Alloryn’s dagger, of that he had no doubt. Their mother had given it to her as a going away present – to keep her safe.

But Alloryn is on her way home right now. With a Caravan of merchants she joined

There were times when as twins they were so very close. One would be hurt, and the other would feel pain. Yet Alloryn could blind him with a lie so completely that he didn’t know …

Until it was too late

She’d lie to him about going home. Those dreams she was having about a six fingered man, and a tower. Welcome to her nightmare

“Alloryn is my sister. Twin actually.” He said aloud with a voice cool and detached, “She is a powerful mage and isn’t supposed to be miles near this place. But if this dagger is here, then so is she. Now that I see this before me, I have no doubt she is being held within the Keep. What foul treachery has brought us to this?”

The knight takes the dagger from Char and nods a mute thanks to the Ranger. “I won’t lie to you. Every part of my body wants to charge down there right now and slay every foul creature that laid a hand upon her, until I set her free or avenge her …” He trailed off, unable to say the words. “But that will boon us not. You say the sewer grate is passable? Let us move as soon as cover of darkness falls. Adrian and Jal can create a distraction with their magic. Then we shall enter though the grates, gain entrance to the Keep. Alloryn will be in the closed off section of the tower, I know it in my soul. Any questions or counter strategies bring them forth now.”

(Assuming some conversation)

Arien motions to Char to step aside with him, “Char, I want you to lead the rest once we get in. My focus will be Alloryn and her rescue. If something happens to me, I want you to keep everyone together. Will you do that for me friend?”

Darkness Falls

It is dusk, and you prepare to strike out for the assault. Then something happens. It is hard to describe but to most of the party it is like a strong wind blowing across the land, but in a wave come from the tower, pushing away. Dapple feels it deep within her body, like a saw tearing through her flesh. A deep hatred of elves so strong.

For Kilgim it is like an ecstasy – as if for a brief moment he feels the hand of his god upon him, blessing him and giving him guidance.
But for Jal and Adrian, it is a rush like no other. Their Mana within swells, and they feel arcane power flow through them like never before. Unstoppable power courses through their bodies and souls like the waves of a waterfall. No magic is beyond their touch, no spell beyond their reach.

Then, within a moment it is gone. Everything goes back to the way it was, and it is like it never happened.

Subject: Silver Screen Moment - Enter the Phoenix

The door to the office read “Sterling Phoenix – Chief Custodial Engineer”. Deep in the bowels of a Blue Sun Corporation megaplex, this wasn’t the office of an ordinary janitor. If anyone were to walk in expecting such, they would soon be surprised by the luxurious furniture, the huge oak deck and the state of the art security feeds and cortex box. Many great cime lords had a base of operations. Niskai had his space station, Dwain had his floating plantation on Bellerophon, and Sterling had his office that few knew about.

It wasn’t always the way of his life. Sterling had once been a Captain fighting on the independence side of the war – the losing side as it were. He lost a lot in the war, Friends, family, his arm, and eye on the left side. But the death of his parents and baby sister always hung on Sterling like a lead weight he carried around. Died in the firebombing of Athens by the “heroes” of the alliance, or so the media called them. There had been five young pilots smiling prettily after they burned his home and family beyond recognition.

But that was the past, and today was the future. Using contacts he made during the war to ‘appropriate” supplies, Sterling had done well for himself. Quite well actually, starting with stolen goods and moving into drugs, smuggling and unsavory goods. It didn’t bother him, let the spoiled kids of the stuck up alliance die of OD’s or killing each other with illegal weapons. He made a profit, and money solved a lot of problems. His left eye and arm were replaced with the best that money could buy, making him better than he was before - better, stronger, faster – or so the doctors said. Then there was the four of the “hero’ pilots that the news people lauded in their feeds and articles were now all dead. One by one, at the hands of Sterling, he killed them. One of them died in the war before he could get his hands on him, but the other four paid dearly.

Or so he thought.

Sterling stood behind the man called Snake as he viewed the screenshot on the security screen. Snake was a master tracker in the verse. He could find people with the smallest of clues and Sterling had used his skills before. He liked Snake because he was dependable, reliable and up front about what he’d do and not do. Sterling appreciated honesty.

“What am I looking at?” Snake asked.

Sterling pointed at screen with an artificial finger. The image on screen was of a group of people moving past a camera. Three men and a woman. Only one of the three was a clear face shot, a man with a cloth wrapped around his head, and a determined look in his eye. “That man there. I want you to find him.” Sterling said pointing at man with the headwrap.

“Who is he?”

Sterling pulled open a draw in his desk. There he drew out a hardcopy of a news clipping, many years old. “Heroes of a Glorious Victory” the headlines read and there were five young pilots beaming smiles at the camera. Four of the faces had red X’s through then. Sterling pointed at the one that did not.

“Oh!” Snake said as he examined the photo and compared it to the screen. “Yeah, could be the same man. Could be not as well.”

“Find him and I’ll deal with that.”

“Sure boss.” Snake shrugged noncommittally, “Where was this taken?”

“Best that you don’t want to know.”

Snakes laughed, “Boss, listen. I appreciate what you do and how you prefer to keep things to yourself. But the more I know, the more you get – it’s that simple. I have done work for you, and I haven’t heard a complaint yet, or a question of my word. What you say stays with me. But you want to play “I love a mystery” and I can’t guarantee results”

Sterling smiled, “Right. Desert side of Bellerophon. Some Chwen (fools) tried to swindle me out of merchandise. I took care of them, but didn’t recover the goods. After the deed was done, these people showed up. I was gonna detonate the whole place, but then this image grabbed my attention. So … can you find him?”

Snake scrolled the image back to look around. “That’s a ship in the background – a transport. Looks like an emblem with an “R” on it.” He continued to work, increasing the image, decreasing back and forth. “Probably a Firefly or a Dragonfly, judging by the thrusters.”

“That narrows it down.” Sterling nodded approvingly.

Snake laughed outloud, “Not really boss. You know how many Firefly’s there are in the verse? I ain’t talking the unregistered ones either.” He zoomed in on the ship, closer and closer, enhancing the image as he went. “Bingo!”

“Got something?”

“Someone. Another person in the shot, but in the back. All you can see is her face.”

“I only care about the guy.”

“You care about her. Look!” Snake leaned back away from the blown up image. "Look how she is dressed, the hair and the eyes. She is a Companion."

“What’s a Companion doing on a transport ship?”

“Don’t know. Since she didn’t join them, maybe a passenger. Either way, she’s the ticket.”

“How so?”

“Companions are easier to find than flies than on a dead man. The guild tracks all movement, all transactions. If I can find her, I can find your guy.”

Sterling smiled and pressed his fingers together under his chin, “Excellent. Do your work, keep me posted and when you find him, tell me and only me.”

“Gotcha Boss.”

Olan is busy with RL right now. I hope he can post soon. Otherwise I will have to think of the most unwise thing to do and NPC him.

I'm thinking, grab sword, put on armour, charge Keep through the front door. Asking "Where's Alloryn?" to each and every person he meets and killing them as they don't answer fast enough. Rest of party follows in behind surveying the carnage and muttering to each other, "remind me not to get Arien mad at me."

Actually, most unwise would be same as above but forget the armour.

"Captain! We are being attack by a mad naked man with a flaming sword!"

Subject: PG thing

Now you see, both Beth and I assumed you were after one thing. As to what to post, if you had other intentions, please go for it. The "private" room in the back is a basic drywalled 5 x5 room with a wooden frame bed and a very stained mattress. This ain't no Hilton, although it may remind you of Paris.

As to shopping or restaurants, yes definitely. You will have a low chance of knowing where though, but you do know that Willow seems to knows every "fancy" (read - clean tables and napkins - oh my)place in the verse. You could always ask her.

BTW - should we put in time index like we did in Star Trek? Just to keep the when's and where's flowing? It is mid afternoon right now in the game.

As to PG and translations, there are always options like Hump, ruttin and if all else fails asterisks. What I meant with the PG reference was I am not writing in sex scenes. If sex be having, we are cutting to the train entering the tunnel. Get me?

First off, you do not have to use chinese if you don't want to. It does add flavour but some of us are geeking out on it. Let's face it, we all wanted a secret language when we were younger so our parents wouldn't know what we were talking about (not that they did when we spoke english).

Cathy asked the same of me, and I have been translating verbally to her. I wasn't going to at first because in the TV show and the movie, no translations are given. However, you have body language to view.

So I will translate from here on and ask others to do so. Remember that some times the translations are not "perfect" and may seem a bit funny.

Note - I added translations to my last post

Subject: The Killer report, brought to you by Planters

Adrian felt a wave of relief as Killer returned to the camp. Not that he wouldn’t have known if something had happened to the furry familiar, but the loss of his companion would have hurt him physically more than many would know.

The bond between familiar and mage was a special one. The ordinary woodland creature developed a far greater intelligence than its brethren, but also formed a telepathic communication between master and servant. But far greater intelligence for a rodent wasn’t saying much, and Killer did have a habit of getting distracted. The mage benefited from the bond as well, bettering his senses as per the servant’s strengths. To this day, Adrian could tell different kind of nuts by the mere smell of them.

To learn what Killer had seen, Adrian opened his mind to the chipmunk and saw what it saw, through its eyes. The perspective always took a moment to adjust to, but once done, Adrian could learn a bounty of information.

The walls of the Keep were crumbled and broken. Killer had run through these with ease. There were trees in the yard beyond the walls, but not the good ones that made nuts, although this one here was good for storing nuts and there was one over here that may have nuts, but not in season now, and wait a minute was that a nut, no it is a rock, and that is a nut, no it is a leaf.

Human! Scurry fast to a place to hide. Man with Blue mark on jacket, like a bird with a red mark on its wing but only the man doesn’t fly down and steal nuts. Big man. Scary man shouting. Another man with band of green comes running. Very scared. Green man comes too close, run to new hiding spot. Safe. Safe. No hunt. Men go inside.

Killer goes to the side way and climbs up the wall to a window. Looks in. More men. Lots of men in room. More than two. Sleeping. Hey, nuts! On the ledge. Killer moves to other side of ledge and eats the seedpods that had landed on the ledge. Mmmm seedpods…good day.

Scampering down to next window. There is a tree. Bad tree, no nuts. Up to window ledge, same men, no nuts. Around the bend and there is another window. Dirty, can’t see much.

Follow the walls. Warm here. Very warm. Door. No men. Another window. No men inside. Fire burns. Shiny things that men use to cook their nuts.

More trees! Good ones with many seedpods. Mmmmm Seedpods.

That was the total of Killer’s recon. The intrepid chipmunk managed to check out the west side of the two building before falling prey to the lure of delicious seedpods. But he had seen a Blue Guard. The Bodyguards of high ranking officials within the empire, Adrian knew that Blue guards were trained from a young age with a single weapon form of martial arts, and their motto was “We are the Shield”. Fanatically loyal, his presence meant someone within was a big shot within the empire.

Black Velvet if you please

Asher downed the rest of his mug and gave his full attention to Beth, “So… there maybe some place a bit more private we can continue our conversation? I think I’d like t’ get t’ know ya a might bit better.”

Despite her youth, Beth had been around the block enough to have developed a cynical view of the verse. Plenty of men have sweet talked her before and they always had one thing in mind, and she’d learn that if you have assets that people want, best make them pay in platinum.

But something about this Asher Kid stuck a chord deep inside Beth, where remained traces of the country girl that dreamed of a handsome farm hand to take her away from her Daddy’s drinking and her mom’s wandering. Maybe it was the pretty boy smile or that slow, honest style of talking. The Kid made her feel special in a single “wow”, like no man had in a long time.

“Well I think you need to check your coat Asher,” she said quietly, “And we shall see how much private we can muster.” With that she moved back to the coat check area, with a sultry glance behind to make sure Asher was following.

GM Note – This is a PG site. I am not writing details here, so let it go as Asher is about to have a very good time.

Meet Market

“ Rung Tse Fwo Tzoo Bao Yo Wuo Muhn! “ Willow gasped, her eyes and her free hand coming up to her mouth. “Kind sir, you must be mistaken,” she continued breathlessly, “ I’m no jien huo , please let me go.” Willow looked around her, looking for Kora, but making sure she gave her best “lost kitten” look to whoever in the crowd would make eye contact. As she looked back at her accoster, she shook herself slightly as if he was getting rougher with her. Her free hand continued up to her hair as if the motion was dislodging her veil, and she palmed the butterfly pin.

The crowds of this city had long developed a hard apathy to situations like this. Stick your nose into other people’s business and you were liable to get it cut off. So Willows looks to the crowd did nothing to draw a big damn hero, although some of her admirers from before were willing to sally up for front row seating.

Kora moved quickly, with intention to stop this man in his tracks. But a big man got in her way, stepping deliberately in front of her in a threaten manner. “Now don’t you be spoiling Zee’s fun. I can more than satisfy …” The man eyes fell upon the tattoo on Kora’s arm and he backed up a step, “Ai Yah Tien Ah.(Oh my god, we're in trouble)”

Willow brought her free hand down to rest tremblingly on his clenched hand as she looked at him beseechingly. “We can’t let my husband see you touching me. I’ll be beaten and you? “ A pretty little gasp of horror, ”I can’t be responsible for yet another man’s death!”

The drunk man smiled and loosed his grip a little, “You sure be pretty. I bet your Kai Tze (Boyfriend, master - derogatory)won’t mind sharing.”

“Zee!” The man standing near Kora shouted out, “We’s want to move on. Wei Shan Dohn Woo. (Big Danger)

Zee looked over at his brother, who shook his head furvourly. Then back at Willow, letting go of her arm. He seemed confused as he asked, “She’s your Kai Tze?”

When the dealin done

“Ai Yah Tien Ah Griff, but you’re paintin’ a pretty right nice. I mean, I’d have t’ be a Buhn Dahn t’ turn it down the way you painted it, but see? That’s what bothers me. Luck o’ Three’s on us here, Puhn Yoh. Got me a hold full o’ cargo I been stuck with rather unexpected like an’ then there’s the condition o’ Royale t’ figure in all this. What ever happened to yer ship’s yer business, but if it had to do with this run that yer offerin’ I’d sure like to know. After all, I got me an’ mine t’ look out fer.”.

“Them’s good figgers,” Dash added, burping the last word as he set his empty mug down on the table, “but, like the Cap says, we’re a’ready up ta our pi gu in bum luck, Grif. Way I see it, Regina’s about seven days out from here on hard burn, let alone runnin’ out ta this Hulawhore Mine to collect the cargo first. If we take a big damn nick on th’ cargo we a’ready got, we’ll be lucky ta get Roc enough fuel ta get off th’ ruttin’ dock…”

Grif shook his head, “You have always been a superstitious one. But I don’t cotton to the rule of threes or what fors and you know that. What happened to Royale was plain me being stupid.” He looked around, looking sheepish. “I’d tell you what happened, but frankly I don’t want to hear you two laughing at me for the next hour.” He leaned back and finished his beer, “You got cargo? That’s a hitch isn’t it? Can you dump it quickly and still make coin?”

(Assuming some evasive answer)

“Well as to fuel, I have to flush the entire system of Royale . I am running about half, but you are welcome to it cause it won’t keep otherwise. Prefer it known to me that you be using instead of some dock hander pocket. I’m trying to do right by you Wyatt. You helped me out when I was in a jam, and no Chwen (Fool, dope) was willing to give me the money. On top of all that, you let it slide until now, without so much as a wave. Lullabelle Mine is a two day hard burn if you angle it right, and it is between here and Regina as we speak. The comet is moving though, so you best be off by morning or it is gonna be a longer trip.”

GM Note – This is my interpretation. You run on hydrogen fuel cells. Once tapped into a system and removed, I am ruling they will slowly leak out all their hydrogen making them worthless. So Griffith is offering to give you the full cells from his ship – about 30 tons, shaving 150 credits off your dock fees. This may sound like a grand gesture, but frankly it isn’t. If he didn’t give it to you, then the dock handlers will siphon it off to sell or use on their own rigs. No one will admit to it, but ever space faring captain knows about it.

Inspired by something Lyskhala said....

What book or series of books made you really like reading? Or inspired you the most?

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant were my first series that brought me into the world of reading. It was so different compared to the umpteen LOTR copies at the time.

Most inspirational for me would be V for Vendetta, The Time Traveller's Wife, The Lovely Bones, A Tapestry of Magics, and The Torturer Series by Gene Wolfe (Offical title escapes me).

My wife calls me "Bear" and has since we were dating. Since I am big and cuddly like a huge stuffed bear.

My God-daughter calls me "Godpa Bear"

On the Inn I have the affectionate nickname of "Big Al". This came from a picture I shared with Olan of me with some co-workers. I was at the back, head and shoulder higher than all of them. (I'm 6'5")

Of course, "Alacrity Fitzhugh" comes from a Brian Daley novel, that I stole the name for a character I played briefly.

In one of the stores I managed way back when, all my staff were giving each other "spice girl" names, as they were all the rave back then. My spice girl name - "Old Spice".

Willow - Are you making attempt to influence the crowd or Influence/deceive your assailant? Or both?

Asher - You do not have skill in Influence/seduction . Do you want to attempt unskilled roll? Do you wish to use plot points? (which would suit your comp of Amorous)

Wyatt and Sam - Sensing motive or detecting whether Griffith is holding back? I need to check the skill sets (empathy?, knowledge?) but do you want plot points spent?

Kora - You are fine for the moment, because I haven't posted what happens to you. I will do a quick followup soon.

This was what I was trying to avoid! Now we have undead-fest and I don't think they are serving sausage and beer.

Magma is so going to get to say "I told you so" after this.
