Stardate: 2368.04.10
USS Valmont, captain's ready room – 06:30

To step into Captain Horatio’s ready room was something of a shock. Being a Morphian, Horatio’s eyes were sensitive to light, hence his need to wear shaded eyewear at all times, but he keep the lighting in his room very low so he could remove his glasses. But there was more to his domain than that; every wall in the room had been lined with interlocking view panels that were directly linked to the Valmont’s sensors. So to walk into the ready room was like stepping out onto a platform in space. Above and all around were the reflections of the vastness that the ship was moving through. It had been a gift of his first officer to set his room up like this, the Domtarian, knowing the Captain’s love for observing space, had worked around the clock to make sure the viewers were integrated seamlessly.

And now, I have to let him go.

“Computer!” Horatio looked up at the star streaking by as they moved at warp, “Where is my First Officer?”

*Bleep* “Commander Avanti is in Jefferies Tube 117, Main Engineering” *Bleep*

“Really. I didn’t think he could fit.”

*Bleep* “Jefferies Tube 117’s structural integrity is at 110 percent. *Bleep*

“Ahh.” Horatio said and took off his shades, then touching his communicator, “Commander Avanti. Could you please report to my ready room. “

=/\= Avanti sir! I will be there …as soon as I can =/\=

“Commander…if you break my engines…I’ll take it out of your pay. You know better than to try to get into a Jefferies tube”

=/\=Acknowledged sir. Just trying to… ack, umm … be right there. =/\=

Horatio put his glasses back on and activated the personal viewscreen on his desk. There was Avanti’s record of service, all lit up. A first rate line officer, Avanti believed in his people and let them thrive at their jobs without interference or too much direction. He was professional to a flaw, but fiercely loyal to the people that served under him. Never afraid to get his hands dirty, Avanti would work alongside the petty officers and enlisted when the time required it – and the crew respected him for that. The captain mused for a moment and could not remember a time he saw him get angry – at least not at a crew member. When that Ambassador attempted to take the bridge by force, Avanti had become quite enraged, ripping the captain’s chair from its mooring and throwing it across the bridge – with the man in it.

He had more decorations that most Fleet Admirals included the coveted Federation Star. Horatio knew that each medal was reminder to the commander of the people who died, and he carried them all in his heart and on his shoulder. Give them all away if it brought one of them back, he had said once after enough Romulan ale to make a Domatarian tipsy.

*Bleep* The door chimed.

“Come in” Horatio called and the door opened, allowing in the light of the bridge into his sanctuary for a brief moment. Avanti entered the room, and looked around, admiring his handiwork and looking for flaws to fix at the same time.

“You wished to see me Captain.” Avanti came close but did not sit. Horatio didn’t bother asking him anymore.

“Commander Avanti. Do you know…what makes a man?”

Serving on the Valmont for a number of years, Avanti was used to Horatio’s habit of starting conversations with strange questions, “I believe you told me it was the uniform sir.”

Horatio chuckled, “I did?” he removed his shades again and stood up to walk towards the commander. Avanti was 6’7” tall and at least twice as wide as Horatio – he had to strain his neck to look up at him.”Actually … today it comes down to how he pays his debts. How he remembers those that offered a hand when he need one so …he can offer the same one day.”

Avanti looked down, “Sir?”

“Two years ago I pulled some strings Avanti.” Horatio turned to look out over the darkness again. “And a good friend of mind was kind enough to let me take one of his best officers. It’s time to return the favour.”

“I don’t understand sir.”

“Avanti … When are we due on Starbase 128?”

“Two days sir, why do you ask?”

“I want us to be there in one Avanti. Make it so please. I want to meet up with the Discovery that is moored there and awaiting their new First Officer. Congratulations Commander, you have been Transferred to a Galaxy class ship.”

Avanti stepped back, “Discovery? But Gavison?’

“Has a new command – The Charon. Let us face reality Avanti, these Norway class ships are getting old. You and Sango have tweaked this one to its peak but it is …will be in drydock for awhile with a retro fit and upgrades. You need to move on, and I owe Blair for letting me take you when I needed a top rate officer. I assume you want the position?”

Avanti thought about it for a moment. The Discovery was quite a ship and he had served with Blair before. The idea of the challenge appealed to him, not to mention the engines alone were amazing. Things with Sango and him had reached a peak and tapered off to both of their interests. Avanti was more traditional than Ilena would ever be but it had been fun while it lasted. This would create a break without the awkward problem of still working with each other. He stood up straight, “Yes Sir. I do.”

“Well then, take us up to maximum warp. You should have a day to walk about your new home before taking it out for the shakedown cruise.”

“Yes Sir,” Avanti saluted, “And Horatio…Thank you for everything.”

“No Commander.” Horatio turned to look at the big man while putting his shades back on emphatically, “Thank you.”

First Officer Avanti stepped out of the darkness of the ready room and on to the bridge, “Speed!” He called out the nickname of the Helmsman, “What is our speed and ETA on Starbase 128?”

Ensign Alacrity “Speed” Fitzhugh looked over his panel briefly, “Warp 2 sir. ETA is 16 hours.”

“Bring her up to Maximum Warp. Let’s see if we can get an extra day of shore leave for the crew.”

Speed smiled broadly, “Yes Sir! Increasing helm to warp 4.”

Stardate: 2368.04.10 - USS Discovery, Main Engineering - 0830

“Lieutenant N’Doog. You have been working for 14 hours with no rest or nutrition. Your shift ended 6 hours ago. Return to your quarters and get some rest.”

“No can do dude” Lt. Bob N’Doog answered without turning his head. He knew by the voice and tone it was Z’var, a fellow engineer. “Got me four more of these mem-mods to link for Shelia, then it’s snoozeville, population – me.

“I can complete the memory upgrade if you wish.”

Bob’s hands moved fast across the touch pad, blurring even to the superb vision of the Vulcan. “Whoa! Kudos dude, but no thanks. When it comes to Shelia’s greys, I want to be the guy on the fly with his hands in the pie, if you catch my meaning.”

Z’var thought for a moment, “You have a personal sense of pride when dealing with the ship’s computer. I can respect that.”

“Glad to hear our waves are rolling on the same peaks dude. Excuse a sec.” Bob finished the final entry and looked upwards “Shelia? How you doing?”

“Operating at normal parameters.” The vaguely feminine voice of the ship’s computer answered.

“Excellent! Gonna drop another, but watch those levels because the last was too close. Back off another ten on get go.”

“Understood. Decreasing startup sequence power level by ten percent.”

Z’var shook her head, “It is not logical to call the ship’s computer ‘Shelia’. It is not an entity, it is a machine.”

“Whoa dude. Don’t be saying that. She didn’t mean that Shelia!” Bob turned to look at his companion, “Don’t Diss my lady dude. Not cool. Dig?”

Z’var stepped back, “No disrespect meant Lieutenant. And may I remind you, my name is Z’var – not dude”.

“If I ain’t calling you dude, I ain’t respecting you.” Bob said with a chuckle and turned back to his control panel. “Okay Shelia. Hit me with your best shot, in the pot, and show me what you got. One more 100 googalbyte module coming at ya.”

“Initializing Memory Archive sequence” The computer responds

Shelia gets me

Seems to me there is no need for pockets in the future. You don't need a wallet, you don't need keys, you don't need a cellphone.

I think most accessories are designed to clip to the belt or pants (phaser, PADD).

The scanner could fit into a large pocket, like that of a jacket or winter coat. Definitely not a pant pocket (Is that a scanner in your pocket or are you happy to see me?)

Yes your SM is visible, but only if you stand up. the wall of the booth hide it right now.

Time for one of my crude maps? From where you are sitting, the bar is directly across, the table you were at before is to your left and towards the back. The entranceway that the police came through is to your right.

Merideth - you will have the Catellan Lt. Bob N'Doog to help you in engineering. I can't let a Star trek game go by without posting as Lt. Bob. We last left him as head of Ship's computer so I'll have to see where time has taken him. He's not the most ambitious of star fleet officers.

Hera – Gambler’s Gully, Ace in the Hole Saloon. 9:25 pm Saturday

The asian man and his friends left the bar with the case in hand. The woman in questioned looked perplexed and then turned to head around the corner towards Kane and Mel. At first she seemed to move towards Kane, but stops abruptly and says, “I’m sorry, I thought you were someone else” before going pass you to search the booths in the back.

Kane and Mel move back to the table along with Grace and Phil once the mechanic gets his attention. Angela is still at the table but with a man sprawled across, on his back. As you move closer, you see than apparently he has fallen asleep there as he snores loudly. One of the serving comes by as you convene and gently lifts Arthur off the table, “He does this all the time. We got a cot in the back we call Arthur’s just for him.” She leads him off to the back as he sleepily sings, “Santa Claus is coming to town”.

Left to you own again, Kane and Mel fill the party in on what happened and show the scanner to the others. The viewer alone is worth at least 20 credits, so there is a profit to the night. Grace shares what she heard about your potential employer on the news feed and ponders aloud whether she could make a receiver out of her multiband watch that might pick up the signal of the earwigs the gentlemen were using.

As you talk about the possibilities for awhile, the scanner suddenly beeps twice loudly and then seems to reboot. The disk re-engages and the schematics appear again, only this time the security codes and passes appear.

Just as you realize your possible good fortune, sudden the front doors of the bar burst open and four police officers armed with assault rifles and wearing body armour charge in. At the same time, you hear the sound of the back door being crashed as well and the screams from some of the barmaids. The low buzz overhead tells of a hover vehicle circling overhead.

One of the officers speaks into a megaphone, causing his voice to echo across the room. “No one move! This is a joint Police and Alliance Special Forces raid! Everyone freeze and put them up!”

Hera – Gambler’s Gully, Ace in the Hole Saloon. 9:21 pm Saturday

“Ya see that’s’ the problem Blondie’s missing, no word no contact, since I got the word the disk was secure and the meet here was on, then nothing. I’m afraid my partner has been waylaid perhaps or has decided to cut me and my new crew out.” Kane said while trying to think of a way that the situation could turn out without someone drawing a gun in a room full of twitchy people.

The disk dealer stared at Kane for a moment, and cocked his head to the side, either an expression of confusion or disbelief. “So be it.” He says with a shrug and laughs, “Keep it. Good luck to you. I’m outta here.” And with that he steps back a few steps and quickly turns to head out of the bar.

(assuming no one shoots him in the back, Xi leaves the area. He will not respond to anything you call to him)

Grace

“NUTS!” Grace called out. The man jumped startled as did more than a few people nearby. “Oh sorry, I just really like nuts.”

“Yeah…right.” The gunman replies as he reaches for the bowl of Wasabi peas, his eyes on Grace the entire time and hands them over to her. “Here ya go.”

(assuming Grace answers.)

Just then, the Asian man that was meeting with Kane and Mel walked by muttering to himself. As he did the blond man abruptly followed behind him. Grace saw at least three other men getting up quickly throughout the room as well. As the leader passed, Grace saw what she was looking for in his ear, a small plastic plug that both sends and receives transmission.

Phil

Wait..." Phil lost his train of thought at the station, “Who are you looking for again?"

“Oh you poor dear. Was it a head injury? Probably unattended on a battlefield while your friends and loved ones died around you.” Phil found himself caught in another embrace. “Don’t you worry. I can find Jonathan myself and you don’t have to worry.”

At that moment, the man that was talking to Kane and Mel walked up to the lady in a hurry. “Mercedes? Do you have my disk? I just gave the goods to your boyfriend and he’s acting mighty strange.”

The lady lets go of Phil and turns to the man, “Xiam? Of course. Here it is.” She says holding up the attaché case. Xi snatches it from her. She stares at him stunned, as if she never expected anyone to do that to her. Neither the leader nor any of his posse seem to notice Phil standing there.

“Let’s go.” He says as he heads for the door, three men forming up around him protectively.

Angela

“I’d love a sandwich, Mister. I honestly can’t remember when I last ate!”

“What a good idea then. Wonder why I didn’t think of that. Miss! Miss!” he stands up and stops a barmaid as she goes by, “Can we get the sandwich platter here Lulu? And a couple of those fruity drinks with the little umbrellas?”

“Arthur!” the girl says with a laugh, “I thought you stopped drinking?”

“I did my dear. I did. For a least five, maybe ten minutes. That’s quite an accomp … acobo …. acumbr …good for me don’t ya think?”

The server laughs and moves off. Arthur goes to return to the table just as the Asian man that Kane and Mel were speaking to pass by, followed by the guy Grace was talking to and a couple of others. The big blonde fellow pushes past the drunken man causing him to lose his footing. He falls backwards on to the table in front of Angela and laughs hysterically, “Did I get you into bed already my dear? I seem to be lying down. Hahahaha. I should have at least introduced myself first. I’m Arthur, and you are?”

I left the movie feeling nothing but disappointment. No other emotional engagement. I didn't feel good, I didn't feel bad, I wasn't enraged, I wasn't happy. It was just blah.

Kane and Mel

The screen showed Perdition, a prison on the far side of nowhere and lost. The man showing you the data disk seemed to think this was of particular interest to you. But there were many places on the disk. But without the codes – the engineered codes that couldn’t be overwritten and controlled everything, this was a disk of old blueprints – useless to anyone but a collector.

“Well my friend you see there’s the problem in all this, I don’t have the disk anymore, but seeing as how this is already paid for what say we call it even.....” Kane said as Mel moved her hand to her weapon.

If the man with the disk heard Melanie’s holster unsnap, he showed no sign of it. But he did show a conflict of emotions on his face at Kane’s comment. “What? I…” He stood up in disgust and turned to stare down at you, “Can I speak you for a moment? In private? Excuse us lady but I need a moment with your friend here.” Xi says,

Kane shakes his head, “"Whatever you have to say, can be said in Mel as I trust her more then I trust you, besides she knows it all anyway so why the secrecy?"

“Fine”, he says in disbelief, “What is your game here? Of course you don’t have the disk! I know that! I’m not gorram stupid. That was blondie’s job! You want to pay for this useless disk, fine! I’ll sell the good one – but I get my disk as second half of payment.”

Phil

Phil was sorta used to women reacting badly to him. He knew he wasn’t good looking in any person’s standard and girls could be a might twitchy around him, but he didn’t hold it against them. This ladies reaction however, did throw him for a loop.

“Oh you poor dear!” the blonde exclaimed and pulled Phil into a tight embrace, clutching his head to her bosom, “Jonathan told me of your plight. Your oppression will end. We will see a verse that is truly free on day.” She released Phil and looked at him with a smile, “So where is he?”

Grace

The young mechanic moved closer to the bar and the gentleman she was watching. She approached with caution, angling around tables and chairs to try to subtly get a look at the man’s ear. There ware no tables open close to him, just a bar stool next him. Unfortunately, as she approach, he turns his head to look directly at her. “See something you like there Missie?” he drawls quietly, his hand going to his sidearm slowly.

Angela

Angela sits quietly alone at the table. She is somewhat startled when man sits down in the booth with her – and not one of her friends. Short. In a word that is her first impression of him. He is a short man, with unkempt black hair I na style called a mullet and fine if outdated clothing that appear to have been worn a lot over the years. He smells of expensive cologne and cheap alcohol. He smiles at Angela and says, “Hello Girls! Well, I mean just you but Hello Girls sounds so much more friendly than Hello Girl, which just sounds like my father. So what’s a good looking place like you doing in a girl like this? Can I buy you a sandwich? I know I’m suppose to buy you a drink but I’m kinda hungry right now, you know what mean?”
