Topic: Voyages of the Rocinante - Firefly RPG QnA
Subject: A quick recap - musically done

Based on American Pie by Don Maclean

A long, long time ago,
I can still remember,
How that Firefly could make me smile.
And I knew if I took a chance,
Rocinante would always dance,
And maybe, we’d have freedom for awhile.

But Purple-bellies make me twitchy,
Stay in one place and I’ll get itchy,
Bad luck on our backdoor,
I’m not sure I can take much more.

I can’t remember if I cried,
When I realized our employer died,
Stem Bolt in the hold, deep inside,
And so Rocinante flies..

I started singing,
So Bye Bye, to this here Frisco town,
Seems we had a peck of trouble,
Since our feet touched the ground,
And all them Ludlows want to kill us, or least hang us to dry,
So thru’ the Black, Rocinante will fly.
To the Black, Rocinante flies.

Did you fly the Lullabelle?
And did that comet seem like a frozen hell,
But the Captain told you so,
And do you believe these bastards fly,
To beat you to the lock on their Griffin ride,
And can they eat dust as we pass them right slow,

Well, you know Kora is in love with him,
Some bearded guy with a double chin,
It seemed all so amazing,
Then Ludlow had guns a blazing.

He used a stupid teenage blundering guy,
With explosives wired to the backpack fly,
And Ernest now was gonna die,
To the Black, Rocinante flies.

I started singing,
So Bye Bye, to this here Frisco town,
Seems we had a peck of trouble,
Since our feet touched the ground,
And all them Ludlows want to kill us, or least hang us to dry,
So thru’ the Black, Rocinante will fly.
To the Black, Rocinante flies.

W got the ice and we head for home,
Or Regina planet, as we do roam,
But things aren’t as suppose to be,
Alliance blockade is holding fast,
Sam hitches a ride on the ass,
Of a ship so alliance couldn’t see.

Oh, and while the ship was spinning round,
Sam brought the boat to ground,.
The brass band was a flaunting,
But you ain’t the guy they wanted,
And while Wyatt, Willow and Sam moved on,
To find your contact before the dawn,
Little did you know the con,
To the Black, Rocinante flies.

I started singing,
So Bye Bye, to this here Frisco town,
Seems we had a peck of trouble,
Since our feet touched the ground,
And all them Ludlows want to kill us, or least hang us to dry,
So thru’ the Black, Rocinante will fly.
To the Black, Rocinante flies.

Sammie’s dottie as the school marm’s a hottie.
Red hair green eye, and oh what a body!
Dashman’s heart was falling fast,
If you escort me to the bank,
I’ll pay you all so there be no flack,
But the robbers were a planning a real blast

Now Sam called on his friends “let’s roll”,
Wolf jumps in the mule prepared to go,
He threw it down full gear,
Oh but he really had to steer!
`Cause as Wolf tried to take the corner,
The marching band was soon run over,.
The brakes were left on the clover,
To the Black, Rocinante flies.

I started singing,
So Bye Bye, to this here Frisco town,
Seems we had a peck of trouble,
Since our feet touched the ground,
And all them Ludlows want to kill us, or least hang us to dry,
So thru’ the Black, Rocinante will fly.
To the Black, Rocinante flies.

Oh and then we arrived all in one place,
one robber was shot into space,
But Sam been wounded bad again.
So come on: Doc meet Willow, Move Sam quick!
Trouble coming from Alliance Skiff,
Through the backdoor, they take their friend.

Oh, and as Willow works to save her Sam,
The evil dude was a Ludlow man,
Their Dad was a commander,
Could the day get any Grander?
And as Wolf worked hard on the hover car,
Asher got drunk in the local bar,
Sam and Brigit did it in the OR.
To the Black, Rocinante flies.

I started singing,
So Bye Bye, to this here Frisco town,
Seems we had a peck of trouble,
Since our feet touched the ground,
And all them Ludlows want to kill us, or least hang us to dry,
So thru’ the Black, Rocinante will fly.
To the Black, Rocinante flies.

Willow went to the temple man,
And he asked her for some special plan,
But she just agreed and turned away.
A meeting held had lots in store,
Hire a sheriff, can we come abroad?
But the plan didn’t leave much time to play.

And in Newhouse, the Professor busted,
It was self defence, but a man’s been dusted,
And not a witness has spoken,
Will soon all his hopes be broken?
Yet the three men outside the jail,
Will they leave him behind the rails?.
Time will tell the rest of this tale.
To the Black, Rocinante flies.

I started singing,
So Bye Bye, to this here Frisco town,
Seems we had a peck of trouble,
Since our feet touched the ground,
And all them Ludlows want to kill us, or least hang us to dry,
So thru’ the Black, Rocinante will fly.
To the Black, Rocinante flies.

They were singing,
So Bye Bye, to this here Frisco town,
Seems we had a peck of trouble,
Since our feet touched the ground,
And all them Ludlows want to kill us, or least hang us to dry,
So thru’ the Black, Rocinante will fly.
To the Black, Rocinante flies.

Derry moved within the outer range of his spell and began the incantation. The energy of the mana flowing through his body overwhelmed him for a brief moment, as spell casting does when you go a while without. Through concentration, words of power and intrinsic gestures, he moulded the energy to do his bidding a released it towards the Bugbears.

They had not heard him, not that they were listening well as they chomped their way through the cake. Then, the muffle cry of the prisoner stopped, and thy body stilled within the bag. Then, one of the creatures buckled and fell face first into the cake they were eating. For a moment, the bugbears were confused and made guttural sound to each other that were questioning in tone. Then at once the three remaining went for their weapons, knowing that they were under attack. Without thought or care of their companion asleep in the frosting, they moved to get out of the terrace with axes ready.

Brandr moved quickly across the garden to directly across from the north facing opening in the terrace, and opened up with his arrows. His aim was true as the first arrow sank deep within the shoulder of a bugbear, between the metal bands of its armour. The second arrow was deflected of the helm of the beast, turning its head in the pain of the first blow.

Ela first arrow strikes the cloth and is stopped by the fabric curtain, the second one meets the same fate but the force of the arrows takes the drapery off its hooks, and down to the ground. Her third and fourth arrows are turned by the thick armour and hide of the bugbears.

Noctus moves with rapier and stiletto drawn to stand before the mage, protecting him for the possible wrath of the bugbears. Peter also moves to the opposite side, prepared to face the evil before him.

Crow holds himself at the back of the party, daggers at ready. As they move within range he thrown his dagger with deadly accuracy but the armour and reflexes of the monsters are too much for his efforts.

The wounded Bugbear moves at speed toward Brandr with axe held high. Brandr fires twice more, the first one is way off the mark, flying high over the head of enemy to clatter on the brick of the castle. But the next shot feels right from the moment it leaves the bow. The bugbear is struck full in the chest and staggers back a few steps. But it recovers despite how much blood comes from the wound and continues onward. It swings wide and Brandr, and the ranger easily dodges the second blow as he discards his bow and draws his sword.

The second bugbear moves to split Derry in two, but Noctus stands before him. The beast sneers at the outfit and weapons of Noctus and attacks him with a ferocious roar. Noctus ducks low to avoid the blow and comes up close to strike with both weapons. Although neither blades strike deep, they do draw blood.

The third is engaged by Peter who hits it with a good solid blow to the chest. Even through the armour, that would leave a bruise. The bugbear returns the favour with a level swing of the axe that Peter’s armour saves him from the worst of, but leaves him gasping for air.

OOC: Okay, I filled in a lot of movement and action here, but I would prefer if you posted intended actions for the next two rounds. I appreciate it if Ela and Crow could choose which to attack as they have initative at this moment, or/and how they wish to move.

One Bugbear ( on Brandr) – Serious wounds
One Bugbear ( on Peter) – Minor wounds
Peter – Minor wounds

Whew! Insanity is over. I can breathe easier now.

Sleep - I would rule that you can cast through the linen as long as you are within the 30 yard range. You can see their outlines so you have an idea where to centre the spell. You will effect 2d4 of HD, working from lowest to highest within a 30 foot radius.

Posting - I do not have a clear direction given as to what the party wants to do beside a sleep spell. Am I not giving you enough to work with in my descriptions? Do you need to set a leader? Do you feel overwhelmed? Talk to me.

Tann - we adjusted Wolf already. Beefed him up and rounded out his weapon skills.

Bro - Professor is a tech/gunslinger. As I said, no one is a slouch with weapons in this group.

I will miss Blamm's kid as well, it was a fun character. But I think we can go with the group we have since anyone else coming in would have to mesh with the group, which is hard in mid-story. However if y'all wanted another I'd be willing too.

My insanity at work is almost over. Two more days.

So what I am hearing is that we have Wyatt, Sam, Wolf, The Professor and Willow. I had already temporarily written out Asher (wonder how Blamm is doing). Do we need to bring in another? We got Captain, Pilot, Mechanic, Tech, Doctor, and everyone is good with a gun except Willow, but she has other weapons .

After Monday, I will look over the last few posts and se about doing a quick summary to jog everyone's memory. Then we can go from there.

Crow crept forward towards the awning with as much care and deliberateness that he could muster. To his ears, every step brought forth a cacophony of sounds that signalled his position, but he continued onward. The shadow of the manor house aided his attempt at stealth, as he clung to the darkness.

Once there, the Syl rogue peered around the corner of the curtain to see what was moving inside. Under the canopy of the terrace were four large ugly humanoids – Bugbears. Each one wore banded armour and had a vicious double bladed battleaxe either on back or nearby. Their helms all bore the symbol of a single red eye. They did not notice the thief as their attention was upon eating as they tore apart with their hands the birthday cake that was laid out in the table. Somehow the pink and white frosting smeared over a Bugbear's face, chest and hands takes way for the intimidation factor associated with such a large evil creature. They don’t even look up from their eating, seemingly confident that they will not be disturbed or bothered, and they are making so much noise from eating that you could have walked by with bells on.

Behind them on the table is a bundle – a person rolled in a table cloth or curtain by as much that Crow can see. It is a woman he’d guess – or at least someone with feminine ankles and wearing high heel shoes.

The door to the castle is sealed by a heavy iron portcullis as was the front.

Seeing all that he has, Crow returns to the group to report on what he sees so a plan of actions can be made.

OOC: Work is nuts so I’ll be out until the 17th. I promise to come back! I will monitor the posts and the Q&A as best I can.

Sudden image of the party gathered in a circle at the garden edge.

"5 gold says its ogres."

"Put me in for hobgoblins"

"I'm good for Bugbears"

"Right, I say humans in bad costumes"

"Can I bet on some kind of ugly humanoid?"

"No! That's too general. Pick a species!"

"Fine, I'll put 5 on orcs"

"Can I bet Drow?"

"No drow in Audalis."

"Oh..."

Not wanting too burst any bubbles but ogres don't often wear armour. If they do they are usually ogre magi and you'd be pooched anyway.

Subject: well ....

How elevated is this terrace? About five feet. There are stairs on the sides if you look at the map.

Do we expect to be able to jump onto it? Well you could use the stairs.

Can we see enough to shoot arrows? Sure but the sides are blocked with a white linen hung loosely which may slow or stop an arrow.

Is there a convenient spot from which to cast a sleep spell before they even know we are here? Define convenient? Do you mean a place to cast the spell and not be seen or heard? I'd have to check the range of a sleep spell first but I don't think you need to be in eye contact to effect creatures. So it is a tentative yes.

Oh, and how big is "big?" The shadows make them look somewhere between 7 to 8 feet tall. You can see the sharp edges of their armour so the are a hearty race that can carry heavy armour and still eat ... dinner.

Unless otherwise told or argued. I will assume that Ela, Crow and Brander are within 60-70 feet of the terrace (with Crow near the wall of the castle, Ela in the garden and Brandr on the outer edge) The rest of the party is at the far end of the garden. You may post movements to change that but in case someone wants to know where they are in my mind.

Kobolds are weak creatures, used by the forces of evil as shock troops; destined to die so those with more intelligence can judge the strength of the enemy. Have you been weighed? Were you just measured? An answer to this you have been found wanting.

After a brief discussion and a gathering of weapons, it is decided that the party will go around the building once and see if any clues or openings show themselves. Ela, Crow and Brandr are the stealthiest of the group, so they head off first with weapons at ready, far enough from each to sneak but close enough to aid if called (Yes, I am assuming here but it makes the best sense to me – correct me if you want).

Coming around the corner, the gardens behind the building are in their late harvest bloom. The red light of the dome makes them look bloodstained but there are many lanterns set up on poles throughout the garden that temper the redness. A few lamps are burned out and some are sputtering with low fuel, but most still burn strongly. Throughout the garden are life-sized statues of people, as if they were wandering through the gardens. Two statues of elderly men looking to be in mid-argument are closest to the corner, and then there is a man lying down in the garden looking quite sick….

Wait a minute! These aren’t ordinary statues! These are the guests somehow turned to stone! Trapped as they were when the disaster struck, these are many the victims you came here to rescue. Some are the soldier, some are town elders, many are the servants.

As you approach the statues for a closer look, you become aware of noises coming from the terrace. The raised platform of marble is cloaked from your position in white muslin linen, but lanterns within cast shadows of four humanoid creatures. They seem very big, armoured, and they gather around a table. They appear to be ripping something apart on the table and eating the pieces as fast as they can stuff them in their mouths in guttural glee. With the light from the lantern inside the tenting, these creatures might not be aware of your presence. Behind them, on another table closer to the castle, is a bundle or a sack that is moving and making muffled noises.

OOC: The covering of the terrace is on all sides that you can see, but you see that the front (facing north end) is tied open.

I promise to beat you to within a hit point of your life in the next fight - will that make you feel better?

Note - The kobolds melted "like" wax over a fire - but they weren't actually wax. Like the senator turning to liquid in the first X-Men movie. Not sure if everyone got that - and I was tired when i wrote the description so it wasn't my best work.

Direction - if you'd like me to move along the party again this weekend, then we can do a quick vote here. West to the back or East to the side door? Or split the party and try both thus making it easier for me to beat Brandr to a hit point of his life?

No. Anything that was yours (arrows, daggers) was left behind with an oily residue.

Kobolds are only 4 hp so just a jab will do them.

Crow moved to attack swiftly with the Kobolds charging in, weapon held high. His first dagger wedged itself into the wood of the shield tied to a kobold but the second flew true and took out the creature deep in the throat. It made a gurgling noise as it flopped to ground like so much dead meat. The rogue threw himself into a tumble toward the Chevalier and the cleric, never staying it one spot long enough to be a target.

Ela moved with alacrity, so much so that her hands blurred. The first arrow struck the kobold so hard that the arrow passed through its body and struck the kobold behind him (Critical hit). Her next three arrows all meet with kobold bodies, leaving them corpses on the orchard ground.

Brandr also had bow ready and with quick action brings down another two of the kobolds before they can attack.

Noctus charged in with rapier and stiletto ready. The first monster he approached went down as an arrow passed through it. He moved on to the next, only to have it drop with an arrow in the chest. Determined to have his victory, the swashbuckler moved to another and another to have them die before he could engage. (Perhaps Noctus at this point might shout something like “stop killing my kobolds”) Finally, Noctus reached one and was able to fight as a man. The first one he dispatched readily with his dagger through the flimsy shield and into the heart. With a flourish, he thrusted with his rapier to take another one deep though the side, making life unbearable to the little creature.

The two monsters remaining attacked Noctus and Peter. The cleric’s armour deflects the point of the javelin from harm while Noctus dodged the crude weapon. Peter‘s sword proved mightier than the kobold and he dispatches his enemy.

Derry realizes that the group has made short work of the enemies and does not call the magic to bear. He draws a dagger and throws it, but his aim is off and the kobold is bonked on the head with the pommel of the weapon instead. The hesitation is enough though as Ela quickly takes aim and ends the life of the straggler (the kobold, not Derry)

The battle is over and you move to look at the creatures, but as you do, their bodies start to melt, like they were made of wax and held over an open flame. Even their crude armour and weapons disappear leaving only an oily stain where they once were.

Looking around, no more come to attack you. Looking at the castle now that you’ve move closer, you see that the windows are all sealed with metal plates that were concealed above and the main doors are covered with a drop down portcullis. The castle has siege defenses and they have been activated.

OOC: The castle has a build in defense system that from within, someone can cause portcullis and grates to drop over the doors and windows. Those are all down, making getting into the castle very difficult – unless the kitchen door or the back of the castle are open.
