Subject: Silver Screening again

Senator Kyle Tang was a solidly built older man, grey hair and moustache, of at least 50 years. He wore the sash of Lordship and the emblems of military ranks as well. He had been a general in the war, with moderate success and medals. He faced death, destruction and worst fates that that in his time without flinching. Now, he shook the bottle of pain relievers into his hand and popped two of them into his mouth, swishing them back with the remains of the whiskey he’d been drinking. He looked again at the Captain standing at attention before him.

“You didn’t find it?”

“No Senator. I had three squads search the entire docking port. We searched ships, we searched cargo holds. We found quite a bit of illegal goods and materials sir, but no …ummm... kitten.”

“Search again!”

The captain looked perturbed, ‘But Senator Tang, we ...”

“I said search again! I want a port lock on all the ships within, and I want every inch combed. Do you understand me!”

But it’s only a cat the Captain thought, but answered quickly, “Yes sir! By your orders sir!” and he saluted and turned to put the orders into effect.

Tang opened the decanter and filled his glass again. This was his own damn fault and he knew it. Should have kept it locked up but he didn’t think that Emilee would go into his personal belongings. But he’d left her in the skiff with her kitten for way too long, and naturally she got bored. By the Buddha, why did she have to play dress up with that!

If that bracelet fell into the wrong hands, he’d be ruined. That wasn’t about to happen and he didn’t get to where he was without knowing when to have a few escape routes planned. If the bracelet was activated, they would find it instantly and he’d be able to make a joke about it. If not, then he’d wait until it was found. If some rube did find it, chances are he’d wouldn’t realize what it was and then try to sell it. Tang finished his drink and then went to his cortex terminal to call a few friends and call in a few favours.

Topic: Voyages of Rocinante - Serenity/Firefly RPG
Subject: The chase is on.

GM’s Note: I have kept conversation out of this as much as possible to allow you to post your own reactions.

Battlestations

Griffin class ships were designed to be blockade runners in the war. Ugly as sin doesn’t quite describe these ships that are reminiscent of a long fat bird with oversized wings. In the old days, this thing would have been packed with missiles on them there wings, but after the war, they were picked up by enterprising folks who stripped them down. Their strengths are maneuverability and ability to take a beating and keep on fleeting. Weakness is that their engines burn out easily, but most owners of these replace the faulty parts early.

Normally in a race, the Griffin is equal to the Firefly, but a touch more agile. But they ain’t flying against a standard firefly, they be flying against Rocinante.

Wyatt takes the secondary pilot’s seat to assist Dash in the treacherous job of flying through ice and vapour to outrun the other ship. Kora takes off in a run to the engine room to help Rocinante with the strain. Asher follows behind Kora, hoping to assist her in anyway. Willow follows close behind to head to the infirmary and Trish, knowing to keep out of the way, heads to the kitchen to strap anything loose down.

Just as Kora reaches the hatchway to the Aft Hall, a streak of black and white zips by, as the brightly collared cat passes under the feet of Kora and Asher. It runs right by Willow and past Trish to disappear under one of the cupboards in the kitchen.

“Rawwwwrrfff” the kitten exclaims as it passes by. All of you saw it but right now none of you have the time to stop and talk about it.

The Chase

Maria Celestia has the lead and uses it to advantage, snaking over and across the vapour trail to send chunks of ice in its wake. A mountain of white looms before you and for a moment all seems lost. Sam throws the ship into a fast dive and spins Rocinante into a barrel roll. Every thunk and bang on the hull of the ship sounds like a giant knocking to get in, but she keeps on flying (1 point stun damage, 1 point wound damage to Rocinante).

Sam spots a clearing in the ice pattern and calls to Kora to give him some speed. She responds in action, asking Ash for tools so she can shunt power from the thrusters to the main engine. Sam finds the thrust he needs and Rocinante zooms forward to catch up to Maria Celestia. Another group of ice comes toward both ships, larger than the ones before. Rocinantezigs to port, Maria Celestiazags to starboard, and it turns out that zagging was a mistake. A huge chunk smashes into the other ship causing it to veer off course. It is still flying but it has fallen behind.

Without another ship to stir up the pot, avoiding the ice becomes that much easier, until Kora shuts down the shunt she built to give Rocinante the extra speed. The power should have returned quickly to the thrusters but instead a feedback occurs. A large panel of wires next to Asher overheats rapidly then explodes. The panel barely misses the young man’s head but the fire from beneath reaches out for him, burning his left hand and arm (3 wound point, 3 stun points to Asher). He screams in pain and Kora quickly grabs a fire extinguisher to douse the flames. She looks to Asher to see if he is ok, yells out for Willow and then immediately starts to repair the damage. As much as she wants to help her friend, she knows that without the thruster, they are in big trouble.

In the cockpit, Sam and Wyatt hear the scream and the call for Willow. Just then, Sam loses control for a moment as the ship suddenly veers toward the comet tail. For a lesser pilot, this would be the end, but he compensates quickly, muscles in his arm bulging to fight the controls. In the corner of his eye he sees Maria Celestia gaining distance behind them. If that ship had missiles still, they’d be dead in the black right now.

Asher gets up from the floor. His arm and hand hurt like the blazes but he pushes it aside to continue helping Kora as best he can.

Willow comes up the stairs with med kit in hand. Glad that she was wearing her yoga gear, the freedom of movement allows her to bound up the stairs and get to Ash’s side.

(assuming some discourse here. 3 wound points is close to serious for Asher but he is no way down)

Kora manages a rapid duct-tape repair of the panel. The reason for the overload comes clear with the smell of cat urine and burned feces from within the remains of the electronics.

Sam regains the control he needs and uses it to his advantage. Pulling the same trick as they did, he swoops over and creates an avalanche of ice behind the ship. Maria Celestia is forced to evade and makes another error in judgment. Bright light explodes against the darkness and the ship loses control, spinning like a child’s top away from the comet. They will recover but you’d bet there will be a few really sick people in that ship once it stabilizes.

Sam matches speed with the comet, turning Rocinante around at the last moment to swing in close. The core of Angel Hair is a nasty inhospitable place. A dirty snowball of nickel and iron and clamped to its surface – a converted Munroe Wagon (Bumblebee Class). You can see the 80 foot diameter dome glowing from within. There are two docking ports are at the 6 and 9 o’clock positions from the dome. Numerous processors and storage tanks can be seen as well as a few other building outside of the main dome.

The docking ports are set to automatic, and with the usual amount of cursing and swearing, Sam clamps to docking coupler #1 (nine o’clock), and shuts down the engines. An automatic vocal message in a soothing female voice intones, “Welcome to the Lullabelle Mine. We hope your journey was a pleasant one. Owners Sam Hawkes and Jim Ryan will be available shortly to attend to your business needs.”

I am missing the copy of Rocinante's character sheet. Does someone have it to send my way? I have a feeling the extra stun armour you got will make a difference here.

That is a perfectly good declaration. Remember this is Serenity RPG, there ain't no place for playing it safe.

Incidently with Born behind the Wheel, Dash is d12+d2 agility with d10 skill in flying. That ain't too shabby.

Going into the comet without the other ship would be a hard complex action (55). You will also have to avoid the flying chunks of ice which is also hard (Ship AG + Pilot Skill).

If you don't avoid the ice, then Kora will have to make a Formidable mechanical repair.

Add the other ship and now all checks have moved up a level. Hards are Formidable, and Formidables are Heroic.

Beating the other ship will be Formidable, if you manage to succeed in all of the above. but the shiny part is the other ship also has to make the same rolls.

So when declaring actions, be as specific as possible. In this case if you choose to focus on speed first and manuvering second, it will effect the rolls (IE you pull out in front making the other ship's levels jump higher. Or you botch and get plastered by the ice since you weren't focusing on steering)

Since you have been together in space for awhile, you have become accustom to a certain order to your chaos. So sound off here as to what that is and how.

I would imagine that Trish would immediately take the secondary pilot control and work on controlling the mundane things so Dash can worry about strictly flying. Of course, since she can't talk it limits communication but a basic sign language would be feasible. Or maybe she helps Kora in the the engine room? That would depend on Wyatt and whether he'd prefer to help fly or leave the flying to others.

Willow would prep Sickbay just in case?

Kora would take to the Engine room to muster the power and control the damage.

Asher would best keep out of the way.

So please let me know thoughts.

Sunset won initiative and put Arien down. So there was no need to cast spells or jump on Dapple.Char was beside Arien and moving which is why he crashed with him.

The nature of the game. You post what you want to do, and I post what actually happen. So in this case what you posted didn't occur, but the intention was there.

Mad Spending Spree

Money in hand, Wyatt calls upon Kora to explain the situation to her. There are 160 credits and we wanting to be off by sunup. Do what you can to make sure all is shiny on Roc with the cash. The Thrasher City Space port is suited to the ship that wants to land quickly and move on, so the part dealers are close by. Yes, you could get things cheaper if you walked a bit, but the beggar can’t be complaining about the offerings.

Kora gets to work with the help of Sam and Trish. New cabling here, a flush of the lubricant system, new (well semi-new…newer) shocks for the landing struts and the evening goes on.

Willow arrives in the morning to be told of 120 credits and a powerful need to be ready to be fixing all sorts of holes in people. Something has got the Captain spooked and he wants to be prepared. Although tired, Willow is up for the challenge and drags Asher along after he says goodbye to his lady friend.

So as ready as you can, you close the cargo bay doors just as the Alliance patrols are returning to sweep the port again with their equipment. Rocinante breaks Atmo and soon afterwards Dash plots a course and then puts the engine into a hard burn. The ship shakes a bit and then the sound, reminiscent of a horse galloping, reverberates through the ship. Even Trish smiles for a moment.

Out in the Black
DM Note – Two days and a half to get to the Angel Hair Comet. Everyone can post any goings on they wish to for that time. Starting here as you approach the Comet

Trish is the first to hear it; strange noises in the kitchen and within the ship. She keeps find that someone is getting into the protein paste, leaving it on the counter or floor. She initial blames Sam and Asher but they proclaim innocence (We got real meat! Why’d we mess with paste?).

Willow finds her silk scarves have been moved and left crumbled on the floor.

Asher hears strange sounds of movement from around his gun cases, but can’t find the source.

Then Kora is working on fixing yet another tear in the coolant feed when she hears a sound.

“Mrawf”

Kora stops to listen. It is silent for awhile then there it is again.

“Mrawf! Mrawwwwwwl”

She turns her head to see a small cat, almost a kitten really. It is looking at her curiously from atop the shelving where her tools are kept. It is a brown and white tabby with blue coolant stains on its head. It looks quite pitiful, but the thing that really catches her attention is the collar on it. It has a jeweled collar – covered with red and green shiny gems. But one of the red gems is flashing red.

“Attention Everyone! Get your gorram asses up here cause you’re gonna wanna to see this!” Sam’s voice crackles through the onboard PA. The sound startles the kitty and it runs away, into an area of the decking that Kora can’t follow.

What am I gonna tell the captain?

On the bridge

Out of the window of the bridge you can see it. The Angel Hair Comet – the bright nimbus of its tail splashes across the path of the ship – a glorious swath gleaming across the black.

“Reminds me of a woman I once knew,” Sam quips, “Shiny, beautiful and inviting – but underneath it all, a gorram heart of solid ice.”

The ship reads the transponder and the homing beacon identifying itself as the Lullabelle Mine; claim registration 1277640. This is the place where the two prospectors has lashed a modified Bumblebee Class to the comet. Going in will be complex and hard, what with the particles and pieces of comet that make up the tail.

Then the proximity alarm goes off. On instinct, Sam banks to the left as another ship barrels past you on a hard burn, heading for the mine. It is a fixed up Griffin Class, the name Mary Celestia clear as day on the side. It is moving to cut you off and it is heading towards your job.

I haven't posted the next part yet so I can add a piece about utilizing the dock supplies and working through the night to get them done. The Medical supplies are the same, no need to roleplay the purchasing of that . Many ships would come at all times into beaumonde and want to resupply and get out fast.

Topic: Continuing Where We Last Left Off
Subject: Knight falls, Dragons project, Wynter fades

Don’t piss off a dragon with nothing to lose

Things went very strange, very fast. Everyone moved to stop the knight from attacking the rogue, but all events leading up to it were so unexpected, it seemed like they were unreal.

Sunset was the first to react. Her previous master had taken from her the usual weapons of the pseudo- dragon, but there was still one weapon that the now dead mage didn’t take away.

In mid-leap, Arien screams in pain and crumbles to the ground in a heap. Dapple winces in pain as well but does not lose consciousness. All others in the room are suddenly hit with a strong mental picture of a woman, resembling Arien, a lovely lady with black tresses that brush her waist and glittering eyes of green. There is a stern disapproving look on her face which is followed by a wave of raw pure emotions (fear, anger, sorrow). Kilgim and Valentine have to stop their spell-casting efforts because of the fervor of the mental attack. Char’s head reels as he grasps Arien and they both crash to the ground. Maximus even takes a step back from the dragonet. More images fill your head, room full of darkness, a green skin demon-like woman hold the lady mage from before in her talons. The images slowly fade away as Sunset regains control of her abilities. All that is left is a yearning for light – a need to get out of darkness.

Char recovers enough to roll Arien over. The man is unconscious but breathing. Valentine sees the magic within the knight fade rapidly away. Sunset hisses at Arien a few more times before retreating back into the folds of Dapple’s cloak.

The ground shakes slightly, a small tremour followed by several weaker ones.

Operating Room

“I am held in this world by a force greater than her.” Wynter answers Jal with a smile, “But if I draw attention, I will…” Wynter stops speaking as if listening to something. She looks scared. Then she fades away again. As she does, Jal hears sounds coming from the other room, where the others are waiting. A woman voice seems to be coming from there, one he hasn’t heard before, and the sound of something metal hitting the ground – then there is the sound of people moving and a loud crash – like a suit of armour being dropped to the floor.

Dm’s note – Valentine did not get far enough into the spell to lose Mana, and Kilgrim didn’t lose any of his prayers either. Only Arien is unconscious, no one else is injured permanently although you may have a lingering fear of black haired spell-casting women.

Okay. This is how it is:

You started with 250 credits, and were paid 500 cr upfront for the delivery of goods to dead people (T:750)

You left Bellerphon and went to Beaumonde (Port Fee: -240)

At this point you were low on everything. To refuel, resupply and do proper maintenance would be expensive (300 fuel, 120 provisions, 120 restocking medical and 320 for month maintenance T: -860). So Captain Tight Pants decided to skip the maintenance, skip the restock, and only give 60 cr to provisions.

You then gained 600 credits from Dodger, plus 120 credits in goods you could sell and about 120 credits worth of food you won't sell.

You are leaving Beaumonde which has a higher Port fee (-300)

Grif gave you half the fuel, so you needed only to fill it up. (-150)

So you have 600 credits left, with 120 to come when the rum is sold (and if not drunk by Dash). There is a sore need to do maintenance and resupply the meds, but it isn't dangerous yet becuase no one has been shot in awhile and the ship is well loved. Now technically, the 720 from Dodger and the 500 before is "take" and I imagine that you all are suppose to get a part of the take. Did we ever establish how that was going to work? Since 1220 divide among 6 people is 203 each. That would leave Wyatt with little to keep the ship in the air. Or perhaps the agreement is to pay shares out after doing fees (then it would be 720-440 = 280/6 = 46 credits each)

Feel free to check my math.

When i began this, I was looking to do a fast intro to the ice job and move you on, but you all rose to the game so well that I didn't want to cheat you of the story. Kudos to Blamm for making me lengthen the "date". Also to Vanadia for pestering me to not simple move us along in a woof moment. (yeah yeah yeah, woof (hand gesture of dismissal) it is the next day)

Tips

BEST: A friend of mine and I once had dinner downtown. It was a chaotic night, we were growing boys and we ordered dinner, ate them, ordered another set of dinner because we were still hungry, then ordered appetizers, then ordered deserts. All the while the waiter was good to us and kept a cool attitude. Well, the table beside us left without leaving a tip. Naturally our waiter was peeved and we were so infuriated that we gave a 100% tip on a $60 bill. We stood outside waiting for the waiter to come get it, and when he did, he looked up in surprise, and we waved goodbye.

WORST: When to a restaurant. Server was slow, food was luke warm, when we ordered desserts, we got the wrong ones and the waitress asked us to just take the ones she brought. We left a subway token and a note suggesting she get one of town.

Geeks with Gifts
Spacedock, Thrasher City – 6:00 pm

Kora had been busy mending a small tear in the coolant line. If she didn’t know better she’d swear someone was chewing on it (probably Dash, he’d eat anything) The plastic line was thin for a reason, and you only had to look at them sometimes to break, but she had check this line not that long ago. That was when the bang on the side of Rocinante signaled that someone wanted to come in. Quickly wiping her hands with a rag, she made her way to the air doorway. Trish was already there, shotgun in hand. Kora nodded an assurance to her and looked through the viewer. It was Griffith, the captain of Royale looking up at the camera with a wave. Behind him was a grav cart with fuel cells upon it.

“Relax Trish. It’s just Grif with the fuel cells, just like the Captain said.” Kora calledback, and Trish lowered her gun and drew her hood firmly over her head. Kora opened the door to greet the older captain.

“Kora! Good to see you. Wasn’t sure if Ole Wyatt could still afford to be paying you! Wish I had a heap o’ gold to lure you away – seeing the mess my lady is in.”

(assuming conversation. Kora knows Griffith in passing but has no grudge against him. He doesn’t hold your past against you)

Griffith calls a greeting to Trish, who nods back but keeps a distance aways as is usual for her. The captain helps Kora bring the fuel cells into the bay and even offers to help with the loading.

“ I ains’t got much else to do. I gave my crew some leave since we weren’t going anywhere. Did you get searched by the feds? No? They were all over my berth tiday, lifting thing up, opening stuff up. At first I thought they were looking for contraband or an escapee, but they were looking in all them small spots andon the ground. Wouldn’t tell me what they were looking for but I could tell they were sick and tired of searching.”

Busy Night

Dm’s Note – by the dice, Wyatt was out-rolled by Dodger, but I used Willow’s skill in persuasion (d10+D10) as direct assistance which moved it your way again.

Yep…That went about as well as to be expected

It had been a tough dealin, but all of you had been in a bad situation. Dodger stated very low, offering 250 platinum and exclaiming the tragedy of having to take the sten-bolts and incinerate them. Wyatt had begun high with 2,250 pp, noting that surely Dodger was a man of the world and had tech enough to erase or change lot numbers if needed. There was much banter back and forth, and for awhile, Wyatt felt he was losing the game. Sam was a distraction, and he started feeling bad about the situation. Then Willow had stepped in to help with calm words, a flirtatious gesture or two, then a strong tone where unexpected and they came out with 1,500 pp (600 cr), a case of rum (12 bottles worth 10 cr each) and assorted foodstuff (real meat frozen, fruit, vegetables and six bars of real chocolate) that would make the next few days of moving through the black more palpable.

Once an agreement was made, it was decided that Dodger would send his men to the ship late tonight (around 9 pm) to pick up the goods and drop off yours. The cases of stuff to drop off would be very big so they can swap the sten bolts into them, and not look to casual observers like they are taking good out of your ship.

Willow had stayed behind with Dodger with a cavalier comment about not waiting up for her; she’d see them in the morning. Sam grumbled all the way back to Rocinante about how between Asher and Willow – he was the only one not getting any tonight.

Upon returning to the ship, Wyatt finds that the fuel cells have been delivered and Grif repeats to Sam and himself about the Feds searching his ship.

(insert any conversation with Grif you may wish to have. You choose whether you want him to stick around when your goods arrive or ask him to wait elsewhere)

Dodger’s crew arrives about a half-hour late, which is par for the course. Hack and Slash are there as well but they mostly supervise and do not speak much. You swap cargos into their bins and no one speaks a word about what is happening. Trish, Sam and Kora immediately start to sort through the foodstuffs with a child-like glee, not unlike present time on Christmas morning. (Chocolate! Real Chocolate! Not that synth stuff they have for us low lives! Look! Green Beans! Is that honey?)

With the way now clear, you move the special ICE crates from Royale to Rocinante and secure them to the hold. Griffith gives you a once over on how to use them, but they are easy enough (designed for miners after all, basically a crate designed to keep the content at absolute zero. It will hold a block of ice, 3x3x3 feet). He gives you the coordinated for the comet and the mine, wishing you all the best on your journey.

(Blamm is swamped in RL so I have asked Vanadia to complete the date for Asher. He will arrive sometime during the night with Beth, have a good evening and then see her off in the morning before you leave)

Sun comes up the next day (you think, this is Beaumonde after all) and it is time to be going. You buy and load the fuel cells you need, get your waste management services emptied, cleaned, fresh water in the tanks and you are good to go. Any time you leave atmo with no one wounded or hurt is a good one.

GM Note – Will stop here so you can backpost and do any housekeeping. Next post will start as you see the comet for the first time

Sunset is scared. Dapple can feel the emotions pouring from the tiny dragon on her shoulder like a rain shower. The explanation comes in image flashes within Dapple’s mind. The smell – it reminds her of the lab she was a prisoner in for most of her life. Images of Orlando torturing her come unbidden to her mind, and she is shaking ever so slightly.

Valentine completed his spell and looked around. There was no magic on the doorway or within the room besides that which the party had brought with them. There was something odd though, like a whisper of a wind within the senses of the spell – like an air current of magic that seemed to flow above them. If he looked for it directly, it wasn’t there but in his peripheral vision, it flittered like pixie dust in the breeze.

Jal completed his spell and become ghostlike to his companions. That strong vanishes as his senses become dulled but the incorporeal essence of the spell. But while that fades away, he feels a strong pull – like a strong wind from above - drawing him up towards the keep and tower. Were Jal on the ground floor and in this state, he would be hard pressed to avoid being dragged with it.

Like something is summoning everything undead to it he thought.

Slipping through the small crack of the door, Jal moves out into the hallway. There is no one out here waiting there arrival and no signs of traps laid beyond the door. He continues to move to the west, noticing that there is a door on his left, just before the stairs, that is slightly ajar. He looks into the room.

There is Wynter, standing beside a long wooden table. She seems to be staring at the table, at the stain of liquids on it. Jal can see some of the stains are blood, but there is another kind as well, a thicker green liquid that has adhered to the table. Jal doesn’t spend much time examining it though, for Wynter appears almost solid to him, like he could reach out and touch her, but when he tries his hand passes through her, like he is the ghost now, and she is alive.

“Do you see them, my love?”

Jal looks to where the dead girl is looking, straining to see what she means. Then it becomes clear to him. Two dead men’s souls are here in the room, but they are stretched thin across the floor and held down by what looks like roots coming from the ground. Only as he perceives them does he hear their wails of pain and anguish, as they are held down yet drawn upward to the tower as well.

“Can you help them Jal? Please make them stop screaming!”

(Jal – You have about 8 minutes of Wraithform left)

Meanwhile, as the rest of the party awaits the spellcaster’s return, Arien staggers slightly and stumbles – steadying himself on the wall. Kilgim and Char move to help him, inquiring as to what is wrong, but he moves away. “I don’t know…my head…feels …” he mumbles as he takes off his helm, lets his sword fall out of his hands and slumps down to the ground, rubbing his eyes as if in pain. “Alloryn … so dark…”

To Valentine’s detect magic, the Knight seems to start glowing. It comes and goes like a pulse.(6 minutes of magic vision left)

Then suddenly Arien stands up, looking about as surprised by his whereabouts, “What is this?” He says but his voice sounds odd - higher pitched, “Two places? How odd. Twins? Oh, this is delicious!” He steps forward in an odd exaggeratedly feminine walking pattern (picture the knight walking like Jessica Rabbit) looking over each of the party members as if seeing them for the first time. “Men! Oh, it has been so long since I have had men!”

Arien staggers again, clutching his head with both hands, “What is …” his voice sounds strained but normal again. (DetMag – light fades)

His face curls up into a savage mask of rage, (DetMag – light returns) his eyes fall upon Dapple, “An elf!” he spits with fury (and that strange voice again) launching himself at Dapple with arms extended like claws.

Sunset hisses and draws her wing back as if to strike. Dapple gets a very clear image of a woman lunging to attack her - a woman with talon like hands and greenish skin.
